It seems that the Chinese tech giant, Huawei, also wants a piece of the gaming market. According to the latest reports, Huawei is developing new gaming notebooks and a gaming console to rival Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

As per the news shared on Weibo by TomatoPrince (via HuaweiCentral), Huawei should launch the gaming laptops before the alleged gaming console (aka MateStation). This isn't the first time the company is working on gaming laptops since it already released one through its subsidiary back in 2020, the Honor Hunter V700. Since Honor has been sold to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, the new gaming laptop would be the first to use Huawei's name. Moreover, the company released a console in 2014 named Tron, which was powered by a Tegra 4 processor and used Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS.

Considering Huawei's massive customer base and intellectual property, developing a new console should be within its reach. Huawei also already has a gaming platform called GameCenter, which is based on Huawei Media Services for Android.

The leaker hasn't revealed a release date for the gaming laptops nor for the MateStation.

KitGuru says: Do you think Huawei could compete in the console market?

One of the greatest challenges manufacturers face when creating powerful gaming laptops is keeping the device cool during intensive workloads. With their high-performance processors and GPUs, gaming laptops emit heat that can be difficult to control and when the temperature rises, core frequencies automatically lower to prevent damage which affects performance.

Asus has come up with a solution to help reduce this heat problem and will be implementing it in ROG gaming laptops featuring 10th generation Intel Core processors. PC enthusiasts and professional overclockers have been using liquid metal to replace traditional thermal compounds for a number of years. Liquid metal can significantly reduce CPU core temperature when applied correctly, on a desktop CPU this is usually done by replacing the stock thermal compound that is applied directly to the die beneath the CPU heat spreader.

However, the use of liquid metal has not been feasible for mass production as there was no easy way to apply the liquid metal thermal interface material on a typical production line. Asus claims to have spent a year secretly researching how liquid metal could be introduced to laptop manufacture and has designed a factory-application process that makes this possible. According to Asus, its new 10th generation Intel Core CPU based laptops equipped with liquid metal yield significantly lower temperatures; therefore, performance is improved and noise levels are reduced.

Apparently, not even Intel was informed about this liquid metal project Asus has been secretly planning. ROG engineers selected Thermal Grizzly liquid mental compound for this project and initial purchases of the thermal interface material were made casually to keep the project a secret. Now that 10th generation Intel laptops have launched, Asus is pretty proud to share some details on this new liquid metal application process.

The two-step process uses custom machinery to apply the liquid metal so that it completely covers the CPU die, which is required for optimal performance, much like you would when applying liquid metal by hand. Step one “paints” the liquid metal to the CPU die by wetting its brush in a container of liquid metal and then gliding the brush across the CPU die with exactly 17 passes. According to internal testing, Asus says this number of passes is the ideal number to achieve complete liquid metal coverage.

To ensure there is no “spillage” of liquid metal, something that could be potentially damaging to the CPU or other components surrounding it, the die is set inside a stainless steel shim to prevent excess liquid metal compound spreading to the surrounding area. The second step of the application process injects more liquid metal at two points on the CPU die, the perfect amount for optimal performance. To keep any liquid metal from seeping out after this second phase of the application process, ROG engineers created a special barrier that fits in the tiny space between the CPU die and the heatsink.

The first Asus gaming laptop to take advantage of liquid metal was last years ROG Mothership, this made way for further refinements of the technology, allowing it to be rolled out across the full family of ROG gaming laptops equipped with 10 generation Intel Core processors that will be available for purchase during Q2 2020.

KitGuru says: I have personally used liquid metal thermal compound before and it significantly reduced temperature of the and Intel CPU for me, so this new application process from Asus should make a noticeable improvement in laptop thermal performance. Have any of you guys had any experience with liquid metal thermal compound before and were you pleased with the result?

23:06 Leo and Briony shooting guns in Vegas

Leo's notes for this episode:

Briony met Bit Wit Kyle and Steve from Gamers Nexus. CES is a huge show, spread across LVCC and a bunch of hotels.

Nvidia announcements included Nvidia RTX 2060 for desktops with 6GB of GDDR6 memory. Nvidia RTX 2080, 2070 and 2060 for laptops, each with the same number of CUDA cores as the desktop chip. Expect Max-Q rather than Max-P. My big question is whether this makes mobile 4K gaming a practical proposition or are we going to focus on 1440p with higher frame rates. DLSS has been confusing.

Intel spoke about plenty of interesting products but showed very little. Still no sign of the 28-core Xeon W-3175X that is now rumoured to be USD$8,000.

AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen demonstrated beating Core i9-9900K. The CPU was shown with a 14nm IOX and a single 7nm chiplet along with a blatant space on the package where a second chiplet could be installed. This 8 core/16 thread part seems to be a Ryzen 5, with scope for 12-core Ryzen 7 and 16-core Ryzen 9 CPUs before Computex. AMD EPYC Rome due mid-2019 with 64-cores/128-threads.

Intel Project Athena follows Ultrabook. no info given. Lakefield uses big.LITTLE CPUs (to borrow ARM’s name) with Foveros to combine Core with Atom

X570 chipset and PCIe 4.0 also coming

AMD Navi has yet to break cover. AMD Radeon VII is due on 7th February with a price of US$699. This is a 7nm Vega with HBM memory that is batting against the GTX 1080Ti/RTX 2080. Anything that puts pressure on Nvidia’s prices is welcome.

Their lighting is rather pretty too

The Aorus systems don't have the super-slim bezels or some of their more artistics counterparts, but these laptops aren't aiming for awards in thinness and weight. They aren't designed to be ultra portable, they're designed to be powerful gaming systems.

The Aorus X5 for example, packs an all new, seventh generation Core i7-7820HK CPU overclocked to 3.9GHz and pairs it up with a GTX 1070. That helps power the 15.6 inch, 4K display featuring G-Sync technology to avoid screen tearing. It can also have up to 64GB of DDR4 memory and has a bundle of high-speed, M.2 storage.

Set to become available in March later this year, the Aorus X5 will start at £1,600 and go from there.

Its bigger brothers however are even more impressive. The X7 and X7 DT bump things up to a 17.3 inch 4K display, which also supports up to 120Hz refresh rate and is backed by a choice of GTX 1070 or GTX 1080, for ultimate performance. Other specifications are almost identical to the smaller version however.
