HTC opened up pre-orders for The Vive today, its Valve-backed virtual reality headset that makes use of room-scale technology. It is a pricey bit of kit, coming with a £689.99 price tag so you will want to make sure that your PC is up to scratch for VR and to help you do that, Overclockers UK and HTC have teamed up with some hardware bundles.

So what do you need to run games in virtual reality? Well for the basic experience, you will need an Nvidia GTX 970 or an AMD R9 390 but those wanting to turn all of the graphical settings up to maximum will need to be scoring a 10 or 11 score on Steam's VR performance benchmarking tool and for that, you will want a GTX 980Ti or an AMD Fury X.

VR

Overclockers UK has three VR ready pre-built gaming PCs ready to go. The base model ‘Kinetic VR' rig comes with an Intel Core i5 6500 and a GTX 970. Then there are two higher end VR ready rigs, the ‘Virtual Raid VR', which features an Intel Core i5 6600K/ AMD Radeon Fury graphics card and the ‘Virtual Force VR' which comes with an Intel Core i7 6700K and a GTX 980Ti graphics card.

For those that like to build their own rigs, there are two VR ready component bundles as well. The ‘Defcon VR' comes with an Intel Core i5 6600K overclocked to 4.5GHz equipped with CPU cooler, 16GB of 2666MHz RAM and an Asus Z170A motherboard. The second bundle is called the ‘Defcon VR Pro' which comes with an Intel Core i7 6700K clocked at 4.6GHz equipped with a CPU cooler, you will also get 16GB of 3500MHz RAM and an Asus Maximus VIII Hero motherboard. Both bundles allow you to choose between an AMD or Nvidia graphics card.

You can view the full range of OCUK VR ready components, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Are any of you planning on getting a virtual reality headset this year? Will you be building a new rig for the occasion?

Overclockers UK has just introduced its brand new ‘StreamR' range of PCs. As you could probably guess from the name, these systems are targeted at those looking to get in to livestreaming on Twitch, with rigs for those wanting to stream at 720p, 1080p and even those looking to stream console titles. Each system also comes with a premium license for XSplit to get you up and running as quickly as possible.

The highest end system in the StreamR range is the StreamR Elite, which is aimed at 1080p/60fps streaming and packs Intel's excellent Core i7 5820K processor along with MSI's X99S Gaming 9 motherboard. You also get to choose an Nvidia graphics card to go with it, the base line £1589.95 configuration comes with a GTX 970 but you can bump that all the way up to a Titan X if you want. The StreamR Elite also packs a 120GB SSD boot drive, a 1TB HDD and a 12 month license for XSplit.

StreamR

The StreamR Pro system is aimed at those who perhaps only want to stream at 720p and 30 frames per second. This build comes with an Intel Core i5-4690, a 120GB SSD boot drive, a 1TB HDD and a GTX 960 for £699, though you can bump that up to a GTX 980Ti if you have the cash. This build comes with a 6 month XSplit license.

The final system in the range is the StreamR Console, which is a tiny little box featuring the Intel Core i5 5250U chip, Intel's own integrated graphics and an SSD. This one is aimed at those wanting to set up a professional looking stream using an Xbox or PlayStation console. In all, it costs £469.94 and comes with a 3 month license to XSpliit.

If you need more gear, like a webcam, microphone, monitor, or gaming chair, then Overclockers gives you the option of bundling those in with the order. You can take a look at the StreamR range for yourself, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Streaming is becoming more popular by the day. Do any of you happen to stream? Are you thinking of building a new rig with streaming in mind?

If you followed CES earlier this year then you may have come across Cyber Power's new line of Fang Trinity systems. At the time, the pre-built systems were voted ‘Best of CES' by several media outlets and now, they are finally ready to be shipped out.

The first thing you will notice about the Fang Trinity systems is the design. Cyber Power has gone with something completely out of the ordinary, segmenting the build in to three main compartments, each with its own cooling and air flow. Each model makes use of an ITX motherboard as well, saving on space.

03_400 02_400

The base £999 model is called the Trinity 100, and comes with an AMD 7850K APU, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1TB HDD and an R9 285 2GB Graphics card, which is perfectly capable of driving today's games at 1080p. For cooling there is a Corsair H55, all packed inside a DeepCool Tristellar Gaming Case.

The Trinity 200 is the mid-tier £1499 model, featuring an Intel Core i5 4690K CPU, 16GB of DDR3 RAM and an Nvidia GTX 970, which is a top performer. Cyber Power has stuck with the same case and cooling for this model although we do see the 1TB hard drive replaced with a 240GB SSD.

Finally in the high-end we have the Trinity XTREME, costing £2599. Although this mode features Intel's X99 enthusiast platform. Powering this machine you will find an Intel Core i7 5820K cooled by a Corsair H55, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 240GB SSD and an Nvidia Titan X, which is the best graphics card money can buy right now for gaming. You can read our review of the Titan X, HERE.

You can view the full range and customize your own Cyber Power system, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Cyber Power's latest batch of gaming PCs certainly look unique. While I would have liked to see some better cooling used for the X99 build, overall, the PCs seem fairly well-balanced. Do any of you guys have experience with Cyber Power at all?

Nvidia's GTX 970 sits in that graphics card sweet-spot where it's about 10-20% slower than its GTX 980 brother, but retails for only 60% of the price. It's that alluring balance between performance and value that makes the GTX 970 a smart candidate for constructing a strong SLI configuration.

OcUK realises that multi-GPU potential by offering up to a pair of KFA2 GTX 970 Infinity Black Edition graphics cards in its Ultima Finesse Blackhole system. Forging the path for the GTX 970s are Intel's competitive Core i7 5820K CPU and an MSI X99S SLI Plus motherboard.

main-image-1

OcUK wraps up the SLI-capable system in NZXT’s competitively-priced S340 chassis, giving users excellent viewing angles of the internals. Cooling the 3.9GHz-clocked 5820K is a Prolimatech Genesis, which also provides incidental airflow for the motherboard and memory. Samsung’s 250GB 840 EVO SSD and Seagate’s 2TB SSHD are called upon for storage purposes.

Fiasco regarding the 3.5GB of high-speed memory aside, the GTX 970 is still an impressive graphics card. Does the pair of custom-cooled, factory-overclocked KFA2 Infinity Black Edition cards have what it takes to deliver the goods at a 2560×1440 gaming resolution?

System Configuration:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core Haswell-E Processor overclocked to 3.9GHz
  • Motherboard: MSI X99S SLI Plus (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
  • Graphics Cards: 2x KFA2 GTX 970 Infinity Black Edition 4GB Graphics Card SLI
  • Case: NZXT Source 340 Gaming Case – Black
  • Power Supply: Super Flower 750W Gold PSU
  • Cooler: Prolimatech Genesis Dual Fan CPU Cooler
  • RAM: 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit
  • SSD: 250GB Samsung 840 EVO
  • Hard Drive: 2TB Seagate SSHD
  • Sound: High Definition 7.1 On-board Sound Card
  • Operating system: Windows 7 or Window 8.1
  • Warranty: 3 years standard (up to 5 years available to purchase)
  • Price as configured: £1870.92 (at the time of writing)

Reading an extensive, in-depth review of MSI's latest gaming bare bones rig, Nightblade, is a great way to familiarise yourself with the specification and performance characteristics. But if you really want to get a handle on whether this is the right rig for you, why not get MSI's tech guru, Joran Schoonderwoerd. KitGuru is careful to avoid mentioning ‘020'.

While every major case manufacturer is still churning out mega-chassis that can store more drives than a weekend at the racetrack, there is also increasing market pressure for companies to offer something smaller, sleeker and altogether cooler.

Industry experts have long been drawing parallels between the world of the car and that of the PC. While manufacturers like Mercedes have plenty of cars with engines over 3 litres in their catalogue, they also have a new drive for efficiency. The 1.6 Mercedes A-180 is capable of 126mph, which is almost 60mph past the legal limit on UK motorways and easily enough to get you arrested before your license is removed.

So cool/powerful things can come in small shapes and sizes.

KitGuru caught up with Joran nice and early, just to get an exclusive tour around the gorgeously tiny Nightblade.

Remember: The full 28-page analysis from KitGuru Labs is one click away.

Now for the video tour.
