Nintendo has responded to a campaign by some fans to have same-sex relationships included in its game, TomoDachi life, by apologising, but has said that at this stage, it would be impossible to implement the feature in a patch or DLC pack.

The game in question is Nintendo's take on the classic Sims idea. Using its branded “Miis” players are able to create lives for the little guys on their 3DS (currently in Japan only, but there are Western releases coming in June) allowing them to shop, work, play and ultimately, fall in love and get married. However some gamers complained when they discovered that there was no option for those of the same sex to enter into relationships with one another.

This led to the creation of a social-networking campaign by one 23 year old user, who wanted to marry his real life fiancé in the game, but found it impossible to do so. This he said, meant that there was a large body of content within the game which he was unable too experience.

The ability to have a domestic however, is still included

Nintendo though, has said it won't be adding the feature, despite fan pressure, suggesting that it would simply be too difficult to retroactively add it at this stage. However, is has apologised for this and has made plans to include the ability for same-sex couples to get together and marry in future versions.

“We pledge that if we create a next instalment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players,” it said in a statement (via BBC).

KitGuru Says: The ironic thing with this story, is that the prequel to Tomodachi Life, Tomodachi Collection, included a “bug,” which allowed two men to get married and have children, though it was eventually patched out.

The gaming industry often gets a lot of flak for not being a gender neutral workplace and alongside that negative comparison, EA games has been similarly voted the worst company of the year several years in a row based on online voting, so it's somewhat of a surprise to hear that EA received a perfect score on its workplace equality rating. And this is for the second year running.

This comes out of the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index, which has rated EA Games as one of the best places to work in the world. The study takes into consideration internal policies and the management structure of giant corporations and twice in a row now EA has been given 100 per cent.

ea
Got to give it to EA. It might have turned PopCap and other studio's IPs into a money machine, but it's all inclusive

Much of this was to do with EA's Diversity and Inclusion Team, which while sounding like a sitcom creation, is a real team that has helped promote gender and sexual equality in the workplace by taking part in local gay pride parades in different EA offices around the world and even hosting its own event to highlight some of the issues faced by people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender (LGBT) in the gaming industry.

The Human Rights foundation was also impressed by EA's work with charity. When it twinned with Humble Bundle earlier this year to offer many of its Origin enabled games (so there was some benefit for the publisher), all the proceeds went to charity, which ultimately raised over $10.5 million over just a couple of weeks.

“We’re very proud that EA has been named a ‘Best Place to Work’ by HRC again this year and that our organization has been recognized for providing a workplace that is inclusive and where everyone feels welcome,” said Andre Chambers, head of Diversity & Inclusion at EA. “We look forward to continuing that tradition in 2014.”

KitGuru Says: This is a really smart move by EA. While it might not have the best reputation with gamers for its business practices, with the current climate of women and differing sexualities struggling to find acceptance in the industry, they're likely to flock to a business that offers acceptance, meaning EA could be poised to see a big uptake in highly talented gay and female developers in the future, without needing to compete with as many other businesses for their applications.

[Cheers GamesIndustry

Apple staff have joined the ‘it gets better' campaign with a new video which shows words of encouragement from their gay, lesbian and transgendered employees.

One man in the video says “To finally be open and honest with who I am and what I want out of life. To my surprise, it was probably one of the best things that I had ever done.”

The ‘It Gets Better Campaign' was started last year when college student Tyler Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate used a Webcam to broadcast Clementi's sexual encounter with another man. Sadly many teenage men are taking their lives when they are being bullied about their sexual preferences.

Columist Dan Savage started the ‘It Gets Better Project', a YouTube video archive or testimonials from celebrities, politicians and everyday people. These are stories offering support to those people who are suffering and who feel isolated.

The Apple video is being used to positively promote that it is perfectly fine to be open and honest about your personal feelings and desires.

“The bullies seem like the powerful people, but the secret of the real world is they're at the peak of their power at 15 and 16, and there will come a time when the bullies are not successful and the people they bullied are, and you just have to out-survive them,” an Apple employee said in the video.

“And sometimes I still shake my head, think I'm dreaming, because it got so much better than I ever thought it would be possible,” said another.

KitGuru says: Apple are not the only company joining the cause. Google, AT&T, Well Fargo and Levi Strauss & Co are all active in their support.

Apple are coming under attack from gay rights activists after they approved an application targeting ‘homosexual strugglers'.

More than 80,000 people have signed a petition against this ‘gay cure' application which Apple has said contains ‘no objectionable content'.

Exodus International, a pro Christian group behind the creation of the application promotes the ‘ex gay' movement, which is encouraging people to change their sexuality. The application gives users ‘freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus', according to the organisation.

Apple have yet to comment publicly on the matter however Ben Summerskill, the chief executive of gay rights group Stonewall said:

“At Stonewall, we've all been on this app since 8am and we can assure your readers it's having absolutely no effect. Apple might consider thinking about their customer base and the penchant many lesbian and gay people have for ethical consumerism when endorsing an offensive app like this.”

This isn't the first time Apple have been under attack for allowing such an application. last year Apple withdrew another anti gay iPhone application called ‘Manhattan Declaration' after Change.org, the online activism site handed over a 8,000 strong petition against it.

A petition latter addressed to Steve Jobs, was posted on the Change.org site last week and it said “Apple doesn't allow racist or anti-Semitic apps in its app store, yet it gives the green light to an app targeting vulnerable LGBT youth with the message that their sexual orientation is a ‘sin that will make your heart sick' and a ‘counterfeit'.

“This is a double standard that has the potential for devastating consequences. Apple needs to be told, loud and clear, that this is unacceptable.”

Kitguru says: Will Apple remove the application?
