Back in October, Nvidia began pushing out another variant of the GTX 1060, this time trading out GDDR5 memory for GDDR5X. Now, it looks as though Nvidia is gearing up to give the GTX 1070 the same treatment.

We've known for a while now that Nvidia has an excess supply of Pascal GPUs on its hands that still need to be shifted. If a recent product listing on Zotac's website is anything to go by, the plan is to quietly rollout new GTX 1070 graphics cards with higher-end GDDR5X memory, as we saw with the GTX 1060 a couple of months ago.

Zotac's website was updated this week with a new listing for a GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Extreme with 8GB of GDDR5X memory, under the new product code “ZT-P10700Q-10P”. This is expected to be amongst the first aftermarket GTX 1070s to boast GDDR5X over GDDR5.

From what we can tell, the Zotac GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Extreme Core GDDR5X houses a 256-bit interface and base/boost clock rate of 1607/1797 MHz, exactly the same as the GDDR5-clad GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Edition. The main differences here are the addition of GDDR5X memory and oddly, an increase in TDP, rising from 220W to 250W.

The GDDR5X edition of the GTX 1070 is not official just yet, but given that the GDDR5X GTX 1060 had a quiet rollout, we would expect the same to happen here.

KitGuru Says: If Nvidia's new RTX 20-series is out of your budget, then it looks like you'll still have time to get your hands on a cheaper Pascal-based graphics card instead. Are many of you currently looking into getting a GPU upgrade? Are you considering a GTX 10-series card over a newer RTX GPU?

With Nvidia's RTX 20-series graphics cards now being out in the wild, we weren't expecting much more GPU news for 2018. However, from the sounds of it, both Nvidia and AMD have one more thing cooking. AMD is rumoured to be launching an RX 590 and Nvidia could be prepared to answer with a new GTX 1060 variation.

Last week, a 3DMark listing showed the RX 590, with a reported 10 percent performance boost over the RX 580. This would put Polaris in further competition with the GTX 1060. According to a recently spotted change to Nvidia's website, the company plans to answer this with a new GTX 1060 equipped with 6GB of GDDR5x memory, offering more memory bandwidth over the standard GDDR5 models.

The Nvidia website now lists the GTX 1060 6GB spec with GDDR5/X memory, indicating that an updated SKU is on the way. Memory speed is still listed as 8Gbps but most GDDR5X modules run between 10-12Gbps.

This could have been a mistake that flew under the radar as Nvidia was updating its website for the RTX 20-series launch. All we can do now is wait and see how things play out.

KitGuru Says: The GTX 1060 has been on quite the journey with different versions. Its almost hard to believe that there could be another one in the pipeline but here we are. We'll update this if more information comes to light.

Last night, Nvidia finally announced the GTX 1080Ti, delivering up to 35 percent higher performance than a GTX 1080 with a $699 MSRP in the US. However, this new addition to the Pascal lineup has also prompted some reshuffling of other GPUs, which is why Nvidia is lowering the base MSRP of the GTX 1080 from $599 to $499. However, that isn't the only change coming our way.

While the $100 price cut is nice, it isn't the only change coming to the GTX 1080. Last night during its 1080Ti unveiling Nvidia also announced that its new GPU would be using faster GDDR5X RAM from Micron, running at a faster speed of 11Gbps. This is faster than the GDDR5X used on the Titan X and original GTX 1080, so in order to bring later 1080 adopters up to speed, the GTX 1080 will now start shipping with 8GB of faster 11Gbps GDDR5X VRAM.

If a GTX 1080 or 1080Ti is still out of your price range, then Nvidia is going to be upgrading the VRAM on the GTX 1060 too, though not to the same extent, These new GTX 1060s will ship with 9Gbps VRAM, which is an increase over the 8Gbps found on launch models. Unlike the GTX 1080 though, the 1060 won't be receiving an official price cut.

KitGuru Says: While price cuts are generally expected when a new high-end card is released, upgrades to older GPUs don't tend to happen. How do you guys feel about Nvidia's announcements today?

Micron has announced that it has begun the mass production of its faster and more power efficient GDDR5X video memory chips, which will feature on upcoming graphics cards this year, including the recently announced GTX 1080 from Nvidia. This follows on from reports at the end of March, showing the performance specs of the new memory.

Right now, the GTX 1080 is the only announced graphics card to make use of the newer memory but AMD is rumoured to be announcing its Polaris graphics cards at the end of the month, so it is possible that one of those will make use of the new memory but obviously, that is just speculation at the moment.

Writing on the Micron site, Kris Kidon confirmed that GDDR5X was in mass production: “Today, I am happy to announce that GDDR5X, the fastest discrete memory component in the world, has already entered mass production. With gaming and virtual reality driving continuous increases in performance requirements for GPUs, it’s a critical time to deliver higher memory bandwidth and efficiency, and GDDR5X is well positioned to help drive these new efficiencies.”

KitGuru Says: GDDR5X is designed to be faster and more efficient than GDDR5 while also being easy for GPU makers to implement into current board designs. However, it isn't intended to be a competitor to HBM 2, which we will be seeing on graphics cards in 2017.

Over the last few months, we have been hearing more and more about GDDR5X memory, which is set to take over from GDDR5 on some next generation graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD, while HBM2 will be reserved for higher end cards. Now today, Micron has begun sampling its GDDR5X chips and has revealed the full specifications of them to give us an idea of what level of performance to expect.

The first GDDR5X memory chips from Micron come with the model number ‘MT58K256M32JA', which feature 1GB capacity and are rated to run at 10 Gb/s, 11 Gb/s and 12 Gb/s in quad data rate mode, according to a report from Anandtech.

New GDDR5X memory is largely based on GDDR5 but offers a few key improvements including higher data rates, better capacity options and higher energy efficiency. GDDR5X can also be incorporated on PCBs designed around GDDR5 memory, which means some cards won't need to be completely redesigned to incorporate the new standard.

Right now it is believed that GDDR5X memory will feature on AMD Polaris and Nvidia Pascal graphics cards this year.

KitGuru Says: HBM won't be taking over completely just yet, it seems that the GDDR5 standard is going to be sticking around for a while and these new GDDR5X chips should offer some decent improvements.

Word on the street this week is that SK Hynix is currently preparing to begin mass producing its HBM2 4GB DRAM chips in Q3 this year. According to a report published this week, 4GB DRAM production will begin in Q3, which will be swiftly followed by 8GB HBM2 DRAM in Q4 of this year. These chips will apparently be used on both future Nvidia Pascal graphics cards and AMD Polaris GPUs.

The report comes from Golem.de, which had an interview with someone privy to SK Hynix's plans for the rollout of HBM2 this year.

HBM

The purpose of SK Hynix mass producing its own HBM2 DRAM chips in the second half of the year is to offer AMD and Nvidia an alternative to Samsung's own HBM2 chips, which will likely appear on the first batch of new architecture GPUs we see this year from both AMD and Nvidia.

On top of HBM2, Polaris and Pascal graphics cards are also likely set to feature GDDR5X memory as well, with HBM reserved for top-tier graphics cards. GDDR5X will be a slightly higher performance and cheap to implement alternative to GDDR5, rather than a competitor to HBM2.

KitGuru Says: This is interesting news to come by but obviously it is not confirmed at the moment so take it all with a grain of salt. Are any of you planning on upgrading when AMD and Nvidia launch their new GPUs later this year? Will you be springing for an HBM card?

If you have been following the news here about future graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia then you will know that the next batch of cards from both companies are currently set to feature two new standards of memory, the first being HBM2, which will appear on higher end cards and the second being GDDR5X, which will enter mass production this Summer.

GDDR5X is intended to take over from GDDR5 memory and will be a more cost-effective solution while also potentially offering double the total bandwidth. According to Micron, its own units can offer up to 13GB/s bandwidth and the power requirements can be adjusted for lower voltages.

micron_chips_2-620x400

The good thing about GDDR5X is that it shares a lot of the same ecosystem as GDDR5, which means it should be easier for GPU makers to implement on currently designed boards, whereas HBM requires a total redesign. It also means that GPU makers can choose to buy GDDR5X from Micron, Samsung or SK Hynix without it affecting the GPU itself, as the VideoCardz report points out.

With GDDR5X modules set to begin mass production in the Summer, we can expect new cards from Nvidia and AMD after that.

KitGuru Says: It looks like we will be getting GPU memory improvements across the board on new generation graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia. Are any of you planning on upgrading this year?

Earlier this week, reports began circulating surrounding the existence of GDDR6 memory for future graphics cards. The news originated from news site, Fudzilla, which claimed to be in contact with sources familiar with the matter but it seems that right now, Micron is looking to squash any talk about GDDR6 and make its plans for 2016 perfectly clear.

While the original report claimed that we would see GDDR6 in 2016, Micron has sent out a statement to various press outlets (including KitGuru) to clarify that it will only be launching GDDR5X next year, which is currently tipped to be used on future Nvidia Pascal graphics cards and some of AMD's future GPUs as well, in addition to HBM 2.

DocImage-Micron-4GB-DDR3-30nm

“The new memory advancements coming from Micron in 2016 are going to be called GDDR5X, not GDDR6. GDDR5X and GDDR6 are not the same product and Micron has not announced any plans involving GDDR6.”

The memory maker also went on to say that while GDDR5X is coming, it is not intended to be a competitor to HBM: “GDDR5X is intended to provide significant performance improvements to designs that are currently using GDDR5, therefore giving system designers the option of delivering enhanced performance without dramatically altering current architectures”.

That last part makes a lot of sense, particularly since we have been hearing rumours that HBM 2 will be reserved for future high-end graphics cards, like the next Fury or Titan, while GDDR5X will be used to provide a boost on lower-tier cards, that would have been designed for GDDR5 anyway.

You can find our initial story on GDDR6, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Micron was quick to comment on these rumours, so it looks like we will only be seeing GDDR5X next year alongside HBM 2 GPUs.

While HBM still seems set to be the next big thing when it comes to VRAM on high-end graphics cards, we may have another contender in 2016 as reports are claiming that Micron is currently developing GDDR6 memory. This isn't the first time we have heard about a new version of GDDR memory as some of next year's Pascal GPUs from Nvidia are rumoured to use GDDR5X memory.

This information comes from an exclusive Fudzilla report, with the site claiming to be in touch with a source at Micron. The source confirmed that the new GDDR6 memory standard will offer bandwidths as high as 10 to 14 gigabits per 4GB module, in comparison GDDR5 offers 7Gbps per 4GB module.

DocImage-Micron 4GB DDR3 30nm

One of the benefits of GDDR6 memory will be its similarity to GDDR5, which will make it easy to manufacture and implement with new graphics cards. That said, the new memory may not be able to match the efficiency gains of HBM, on top of that, HBM 2 is also due out next year, which is set to increase performance and efficiency even further.

Previous rumours have said that the new high-end GPUs from Nvidia and AMD will feature HBM 2, while lower tier cards will now make use of GDDR5X/GDDR6 memory. If this report is to be believed, then this seems like a likely outcome for next year's new GPU launches.

KitGuru Says: This isn't the first time we have heard about a new version of GDDR memory but it is still interesting, particularly since it could mean that GPUs across the board could get memory upgrades next year.

Recently, we have been hearing quite a bit about GDDR5x, with rumours suggesting that Nvidia intends to use it in addition to HBM2 on its Pascal graphics cards next year. Now it would seem that AMD is also planning a similar move, with GDDR5x rumoured to appear on its new 14nm graphics cards next year while we wait for HBM to become more widely available.

Right now, it is believed that AMD has priority access to HBM2, which may already be in fairly limited supply, which means there is still some room left in the market for GDDR5.

amd_radeon_fiji_gpu

According to a presentation by a DRAM maker, which leaked on to the web (Via: Techpowerup), GDDR5x will offer double the data-rate per memory access. GDDR5x is also believed to bring new speeds of up to 12Gbps initially, which is a significant improvement over the 7Gbps we are used to seeing on current GDDR5 chips. The big thing is that GDDR5x will use the same pins as GDDR5, which should make it easy for GPU makers to implement without needing to develop new designs.

From the way things are going, it sounds like GDDR5x will replace GDDR5 for both AMD and Nvidia on lower end graphics cards, while top-end GPUs will feature the more energy efficient HBM2. This is all rumour for now though, we should learn more about AMD and Nvidia's future architecture plans as we move in to 2016.

KitGuru Says: This is a pretty interesting turn. I wasn't really aware of GDDR5x until a few weeks ago and I imagine many were under the assumption that HBM would become more widely adopted next year, though that may only be partially true. At the very least, this move to GDDR5x will put less demand on HBM2 supplies, which means manufacturers will hopefully be able to keep up.

Nvidia is on track to launch its new Pascal architecture in 2016, with reports suggesting that Nvidia is already testing both its GP100 and GP104 chips. Now, new rumours circulating say that there will be a successor to GDDR5 video memory known as GDDR5X, which will début with some of Nvidia's upcoming Pascal based graphics cards in addition to HBM2.

The GP100 GPU will be Nvidia's next ultra high-end card, like a Titan or Ti-series GPU. The GP104 will be the next step up from the GTX 970 and 980 graphics cards. Rumour has it that GDDR5X will keep the same 256-bit memory bus, but the memory bandwidth will be increased to 448GB/sec. HBM2 will also be used, likely on the higher tier GP100 graphics cards, though this has yet to be confirmed.

HBM2 will include a 4096-bit memory bus, according to TweakTown, along with a 1GHz memory bandwidth capable of pushing 1TB/sec. Right now, this is all rumour so take this information with a grain of salt and keep an eye out for future information regarding Nvidia's upcoming Pascal architecture.
