Yesterday, rumours of Randy Pitchford stepping down from his position at Gearbox began to swirl. At the time, a Gearbox spokesperson told us that there was “no validity to this claim”, but there are indeed some major changes happening. Pitchford is stepping down as president of Gearbox, although he will remain at the company.

Gearbox Software's president role will now go to former Chief Technology Officer, Steve Jones. Meanwhile, Gearbox co-founder, Randy Pitchford, will remain at the company as CEO.

What this essentially means is that game development operations at Gearbox Software will now be run by Jones, while Pitchford will oversee Gearbox parent company, Gearbox Entertainment, which was acquired by Embracer Group earlier this year in a $1.3 billion deal.

Pitchford is also going to oversee Gearbox Studios, a new division within the company that will tackle film and TV projects, starting with a live-action Borderlands movie.

KitGuru Says: There are some big changes going on at Gearbox following the recent acquisition and it looks like the company is set on being more involved in cross-media projects, branching out beyond gaming.

With Gearbox announcing that Borderlands 3 will have over 1 billion different weapons, some fans began to worry about loot distribution. Fortunately, the developer has opted for individual loot streams, meaning that players will not have to fight over guns that have dropped.

Separate loot avoids problems found in Borderlands 2, where all players could see drops and therefore swipe it before others have a chance. This was a particular nightmare when groups would pair up with more than one of the same character, as this often results in multiple people clamouring for the same kind of weapons.

“Regardless of your respective levels or mission progress, you and your friends can play together online or on the couch,” explains Gearbox art director Scott Kester in a PlayStation blog post. “And not only will each of you deal a meaningful amount of damage, you’ll also receive your own discrete loot stream. No more loot ninjas!”

Those that preferred shared loot aren’t totally out of luck though, as Kester states that “classic Borderlands 2 co-op rules” are entirely optional from within the settings. This is perhaps better with a more teamwork-based group of friends but shows much greater flexibility than Borderlands players have experienced before.

The blog post also reveals the names of the new playable Vault Hunters and tidbits of information about each. As expected, Amara is a Siren with the power to summon ethereal fists, FL4K is a robot who fights alongside a battle-hardened pet, Moze is a young girl who fights using a mech called Iron Bear, and finally, Zane uses gadgets like his Digi-clone to confuse enemies. These will fight against the Calypso Twins using “uncommonly deep skill trees” and abilities, in order to stop usual world-ending schemes.

Borderlands 3 will release on September 13th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. For the latter, it will remain an Epic Games Store exclusive for 6 months before potentially hitting other platforms like Steam.

KitGuru Says: Individual loot suits me far better than shared, as it means I can sift through the collection at my own leisure. Still, options are always welcome as it caters the experience per player. What kind of loot distribution do you prefer?

Gearbox Software has been coy about its next entry into the Borderlands series, opting to focus on other games in its library such as Battleborn and more recently picking up We Happy Few. Fans of the series can more than likely rejoice, however, as the company is “working on the thing most of you guys want us to be working on.”

Gearbox isn’t just working on what people want most, but 90 percent of the company according to CEO Randy Pitchford at his panel at PAX West. Of course, this isn’t necessarily Borderlands 3 that he is referring to but since no one wants to see another Aliens: Colonial Marines, it more than likely is the developer’s most successful series that we can expect.

We first heard official word of Borderlands 3 back in 2015 when Pitchford announced a recruitment drive for the game. Since then, we’ve been treated to a technical test of the engine that will power the upcoming cel-shaded shooter.

The last entries into the series were both released in 2014, with Gearbox releasing Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Telltale taking the reins on Tales from the Borderlands. The team behind Telltale’s iteration specifically designed their characters to be able to be included in Borderlands 3, so there is a potential for Rhys, Fiona and the rest of the wacky cast to return.

Little is known about Borderlands 3 including a release date, but whatever 90 percent of the team are working on is sure to be announced in the near future since so many of Gearbox’s resources are being allocated at once.

KitGuru Says: I honestly do hope to see the Tales from the Borderlands cast make an appearance as they were developed in such a wonderful way. What do you hope to see in Borderlands 3?

Aliens: Colonial Marines was a highly anticipated game a couple of years back. It had an amazing E3 demo that fooled press and fans alike with an impressive vertical slice of the game that turned out to be nothing like the final product. As you would imagine, fans were upset after having been mislead on numerous occasions and proceeded to file a lawsuit against Sega and Gearbox Software.

After a while, Gearbox Software was dropped from the lawsuit, while Sega managed to settle for $1.25 million. However, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, has not been quiet when it comes to his opinion of the lawsuit. Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Pitchford claimed that the suit was “a huge waste of time” and went on to say that fans involved were using “mafia style extortion tactics”.

Aliens-Gamplay

Despite the false advertising and blatant misleading that occurred with Aliens: Colonial Marines, Pitchford is under the impression that ‘the market' should judge products and not the legal system: “The market proved it was doing its job perfectly. The market is dispassionate — rewarding what it likes and punishing what it doesn't. There is an objectivity and fairness in the open market's harsh, firm justice.”

KitGuru Says: Aliens: Colonial Marines was one of the most high-profile disappointments in recent years so it's no wonder fans were mad when it launched. Unfortunately, it seems Gearbox is never going to admit that it did wrong while developing that game.
