Last year during Oculus Connect, the company took to the stage to announce its next virtual reality headset. It's called Oculus Go, costs $199 and aims to bring VR to the masses as an all-in-one solution, with no additional hardware required. We've known about this HMD for several months now, but little has been revealed in terms of performance. Fortunately, John Carmack seems more than willing to answer those questions.

The Oculus Go is essentially a competitor to other mobile VR headsets, like the GearVR. Under the hood, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, naturally making it more powerful than something like a Samsung Galaxy S7 plugged into a GearVR. However, the performance difference will be wider than expected, as the chip in the Oculus Go is solely dedicated to running VR apps, rather than an entire phone.

Tweeting about Oculus Go's capabilities, Carmack stated that it will be “significantly better” than a Galaxy S7 paired with a GearVR. He also added that the chip inside of the Go headset will use dynamic clock scaling set above the Galaxy S7's minimal levels. With that in mind, the Oculus Go should perform closer to something like the Snapdragon 845 powered Galaxy S8 when running VR applications.

Obviously when the Galaxy S9 launches, that could change. However, for the time being, it looks like the Oculus Go is going to be plenty powerful enough to run some decent virtual reality apps at decent, locked frame rates.

KitGuru Says: The Oculus Go headset is still expected to launch in Q1 2018, so we may end up seeing more of the headset before the end of this month. Do you guys think an all-in-one, competitively priced solution like the Oculus Go could succeed in widening VR's userbase?

Back in May, we learned that Google would be teaming up with HTC to launch a standalone virtual reality headset built for Google's ‘Daydream' platform. A lot of changes have happened since then, with Google buying up part of HTC, and HTC doubling down on its VIVE efforts. As a result, this collaboration is no longer happening, with HTC instead opting to release the ‘VIVE Focus', a wireless, standalone virtual reality headset.

At the Vive Developer Conference this week, HTC announced the Vive Focus. It is built around the ‘Viveport' platform, whereas the PC-based VIVE is built around SteamVR. The headset features six degrees of freedom tracking, along with a three degree of freedom controller, similar to Samsung's GearVR.

The Vive Focus is powered by a Snapdragon 835 SoC, making it easier for developers to port over their existing Daydream and GearVR apps. As UploadVR points out, right now, the Vive Focus is only getting a release in China, but it could spread to the rest of the world at some point.

While HTC is no longer producing a Daydream headset for Google, Lenovo is still planning on launching its own. However, it may not appear until 2018 at this rate.

KitGuru Says: Since selling off a chunk of its mobile division to Google, HTC seems to have refocused its resources on growing the Vive brand. This change in plan seems like a clear result of that, with HTC choosing to support its own platform, rather than release a VR headset for Google's Daydream platform. Do many of you have much experience with mobile VR headsets?

It looks like the folks over at Turtle Rock Studios have been doing plenty of experimenting since moving on from Left 4 Dead and Evolve. After a brief period of silence, Turtle Rock has reemerged with a brand new Fantasy RPG called ‘The Well’, developed for VR.

The Well will put players in the world of ‘Tholl’ in the midst of a fight against evil forces looking to take over. You get to pick from a rather standard set of fantasy RPG classes, including a warrior, a mage, a rogue, or a druid.

The trailer for the game unfortunately doesn’t show much in terms of combat but it does give you an idea of the general art style and tone the developers are going for.

The only major downside to this game is the fact that it is being made exclusively for the Samsung GearVR, so it won’t be available on PC platforms, like the Oculus Rift or SteamVR. This isn’t the only virtual reality game Turtle Rock Studios has in the works though, there is also a co-op based first-person shooter on the way at some point.

KitGuru Says: It’s a shame that so many apps end up exclusive to Oculus Home on the GearVR and remain locked off from the PC side of things. Hopefully Turtle Rock’s next VR game will branch out a bit more as far as platforms are concerned. Do any of you own a GearVR? Is gaming something you use it for very often?

While it may not quite live up to the likes of the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, Samsung has managed to carve itself a nice piece of the virtual reality market over the last few years with the GearVR. Unfortunately up until now, these headsets have also required a Galaxy smartphone to act as the display but that could change this year. In fact, Samsung's next-gen GearVR could up the ante and include its own dedicated display, with a higher PPI than the high-end headsets currently on the market.

A new report from the Korea Herald, citing sources close to Samsung's plans, claims that a new Gear VR is currently being shown off behind closed doors with much more impressive specs. This new version does with an integrated display with 1200 pixels per inch. However, an updated 1500 PPI version is expected to be shown soon.

Right now, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive both offer around 450 pixels per inch with their current resolution. With that in mind, Samsung's new VR display could offer a significant jump, though it is difficult to guess resolution without knowing the exact display size. Still, it will be much higher than 1080p per eye, which could make it much nicer for viewing video in VR.

We don't know exactly when Samsung will unveil this new Gear VR to the public, but perhaps it will make an appearance at the Galaxy S8 unveiling at the end of next week. If not, then Samsung may save it for the next Galaxy Note unveiling later this year in late August/early September.

KitGuru Says: One of the more obvious flaws with VR in its current form Is the low resolution. It's ‘good enough', but the more pixels we can cram on the screen at this point, the better. Especially for movie watching, as lower resolution can be more apparent when you aren't interacting with the virtual world.

Samsung has actually been at the forefront of consumer VR for a few years now with the GearVR and for a while, Samsung enjoyed a fairly open playing field. However, other companies are starting to catch on with virtual reality for smartphones, with Google gearing up to launch Daydream VR and Qualcomm showing off a headset of its own. Fortunately, it sounds like Samsung is up to the challenge, welcoming competition in the VR space.

In an interview with the Associated Press recently,  Tom Harding, Samsung's US head of VR and immersive products, spoke a little about the future of virtual reality and other future plans for the GearVR.

4023c086-a6ae-4beb-ace8-07abaa81801d

At one point, Harding was asked about upcoming competing headsets, like Google's Daydream, to which he explained that “the market is large enough” to support multiple headsets, adding that “anything we can do to expand awareness is positive”, indicating that more headsets will help boost the VR industry as a whole.

Aside from that, Samsung is exploring ways to improve its own headset. Right now, the GearVR doesn't come with a hand-held controller, but that could arrive in the future as Samsung's developers are “working out the best way to interact in virtual reality”. The newest headset included a new USB connector too, which could be used for various peripherals.

KitGuru Says: The Samsung GearVR is actually a pretty sweet device, though it doesn't seem to be particularly common here in the UK. That said, with more companies getting involved in VR, there is more opportunity for the industry to grow. Do any of you guys own a virtual reality device already? Are you waiting on the tech to mature before jumping in?

We have known for a while that Samsung is planning to officially announce the Galaxy Note 7 and a new GearVR headset next week. However, now it looks like the company may have nothing truly ‘new’ to show as a fresh batch of PR leaks hit the web today, giving us more official details on Samsung’s upcoming announcements ahead of time.

The reliable OnLeaks is behind this new information. This time, he leaked some new images of the Galaxy Note 7 itself in black, silver and blue. On top of that, he revealed the new GearVR, which comes in black this time and is once again, ‘powered by Oculus’.

Galaxy Note 7

Like the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7, the Galaxy Note 7 is built around a metal frame with a glass front and back. Nowhereelse.fr also managed to confirm that the device is just 7.9mm thick and comes with IP68 dust and waterproof certification.

As far as specifications go, we are getting a new 5.7-inch 1440p Super AMOLED display with curved side edges. Under the hood will be an eight core chip clocked at 2.3GHz and 4GB of RAM so it should be able to handle plenty of apps and multitasking duties. There will be dual 12 megapixel cameras with an 7/1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization. Finally, USB Type-C, fingerprint/iris scanners, 64GB of storage and a 3500mAh battery have been confirmed.

KitGuru Says: So there you have it, Samsung’s next batch of devices for 2016 will be hitting store shelves next month and presumably there’s nothing really ‘new’ Samsung can tell us at its event next week. Are any of you guys looking to pick up a new Samsung phone this year? Do you think you’ll get the new Note?

Samsung was the first smartphone company to jump into consumer VR with its GearVR headset and now it seems that the company is hoping to get its headset into more hands as it will now come bundled with pre-orders of the Galaxy S7, which was officially announced this week. The GearVR headset is made in partnership with Oculus and has been through a few iterations already for different devices.

The GearVR being bundled with the Galaxy S7 was announced by Oculus themselves, with Palmer Luckey saying that “This is a huge step for mainstream adoption of VR. This is going to multiply the VR user base by many times!”

Luckey also went on to say: “As we bring more people to the Oculus ecosystem, developers become more successful, leading to more content for everyone!”

The GearVR bundle will also come with $50 worth of apps in total, including games like EVE: Gunjack, Land’s End, and Anshar Wars 2.

KitGuru Says: While Oculus does have the flagship Rift headset coming next month, the GearVR could help push the technology towards the more mainstream audience. Have any of you tried a GearVR at all? Apparently it's a pretty good device.

Samsung was the first smartphone company to jump into consumer VR with its GearVR headset and now it seems that the company is hoping to get its headset into more hands as it may come bundled with pre-orders of the Galaxy S7, which is set to be unveiled at an event later this month.

This is according to a report from Android World, which says that Samsung will be offering up its GearVR headset as a free pre-order incentive to those looking to grab the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge when it goes on sale in March.

Samsung-Gear-VR-vs-Microsoft-HoloLens-2-e1429799236620

Those pre-ordering the Galaxy S7 will apparently need to register their order with Samsung and the headset itself would be sent out at a later date as there is currently not a GearVR on the market that will fit the Galaxy S7 due to its new screen size.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is set to be announced at an Unpacked event on the 21st of February, with the device set to start shipping on the 111th of March. Pricing will remain similar to the Galaxy S6, which launched at a £550 price point, with the Edge version costing extra.

KitGuru Says: There is a lot of buzz surrounding VR this year so it would make sense for Samsung to really push its headset out there over the next few months, especially while it is still the first to market, after all, word has it that Google will also be launching a VR headset soon for smartphones.

Google has some success bringing cheap Virtual Reality to the intrigued masses last year with the DIY Google Cardboard but now it seems that the company wants to take the next step with a proper VR headset of its own set to launch sometime this year. Much like Cardboard and even Samsung's Oculus-built GearVR, Google's new headset will take aim at smartphones, rather than PCs.

According to a report from The Financial Times, Google is already developing its new virtual reality headset, with a plastic body, better sensors and lenses. However, while Samsung's GearVR only supports a limited number of the company's own devices, Google's headset will apparently support a wider range.

one-cardboard

In order to support this, Google is also apparently working on implementing new VR software into the next version of Android, which will debut for consumers towards the end of this year alongside the next batch of Nexus smartphones, which may be built by HTC this year if recent rumors are to be believed.

Google's new VR headset will apparently be built similarly to the Nexus devices, with Google supplying the initial design and a third-party taking on manufacturing duties.

KitGuru Says: It is clear that the Oculus Rift with its $600 price tag isn't going to bring VR to the masses anytime soon. However, these mobile VR headsets are much cheaper and therefore stand a better chance of wider adoption. Would you buy a Google VR headset for your Android smartphone? Are you going to wait on VR for PCs instead?

Virtual reality is growing and there is a big push for it on smartphones, thanks to products like the Samsung GearVR and the Google Cardboard. The YouTube app even supports virtual reality headset viewing from smartphones now, something that Figment is looking to help push with its iPhone case, which doubles as a pair of VR lenses for viewing.

The Figment VR is a soft-touch iPhone 6 case, which will work with a bunch of VR demo apps, which can be found on the App Store. It will also work with YouTube's new features and the Google Cardboard if you don't fancy holding the phone up to your face every time you want to watch something.

d9fc46eeeeb7cfb7c39439a80a25a3c9_original

The case itself is part plastic and part aluminium, so it should be pretty durable. It will add quite a bit of extra thickness to your device though. The VR lenses pop out and sit in place with a flip motion and locks in to place with two circular plastic tabs. The case is currently on Kickstarter, looking to raise $75,000, which seems likely, as it has already raised close to $20,000 at the time of writing, with 56 days left to go.

The case itself will cost $89, though there is a limited supply of early bird deals. Right now, the case is being pitched for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+, though an Android version is also being worked on at the moment.

The new GearVR will work with the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 Edge and finally, the regular Galaxy S6.

Each of those devices comes with a 2560×1440 display, so things should look pretty sharp while using the headset. An exact release date wasn't announced, though it will launch before Black Friday this year in the US, it will also have a $99 price tag, half that of the previous GearVR headsets.

The redesign makes the GearVR 22 per cent lighter and there is a new touchpad in order to make the device easier to use. The GearVR is US only for now though, with it being available from Amazon, Best Buy and Samsung's own online store.
