Nvidia Corp. is working on a new graphics processing unit for mobile personal computers that will feature performance of desktop-class graphics adapters. Not a lot of details are known about the new product, but a media report claims that the new flagship GeForce GTX for notebooks will be released in September.

NotebookCheck web-site reports that Nvidia’s new mobile graphics processing unit is code-named N16E-GXX, but at present it is unknown which graphics processor is used for the product. At present Nvidia’s flagship GPU for notebooks is GeForce GTX 980M based on the GM204 graphics processing unit with 1536 stream processors. Therefore, Nvidia could release another GM204-based mobile product with all stream processors activated. Alternatively, Nvidia could use its GM200 graphics chip for a new mobile flagship product.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_980_maxwell_gm204_1

According to the report, Nvidia’s new mobile graphics adapter will feature thermal design power between 100W and 185W, which means that the N16E-GXX may be based on either GM204 or GM200 graphics processing units. The product will not be released in MXM form-factor, which means that laptops featuring the product will not be upgradeable.

The official name of the N16E-GXX is unknown, but it is possible that the novelty will carry GTX 990M model number.

KitGuru Says: If Nvidia releases a mobile graphics solution based on the GM200 graphics processor, then such mobile GPU will deliver performance, which will be higher compared to many high-end desktops. Obviously, laptops featuring GM200 will be hot and their battery life will be negligible. However, gamers will probably be happy with performance than such machines can deliver.

MicroStar International does not plan to block overclocking of Nvidia GeForce GTX 900M-series graphics processing units inside its laptops for gamers. The company, which produces one of the finest high-end notebooks, however, warns overclockers about possible overheating and warranty issues because of overclocking.

“MSI is not planning any changes to the overclocking capabilities of MSI’s gaming notebooks,” a statement from MSI published by PC Games Hardware reads. “The latest statements from Nvidia on the subject have no effect on our product design. However, we point out that warranty and services will be voided if defects occur as a result of components operating outside of their specifications.”

Earlier this month Nvidia blocked overclocking functionality for mobile GeForce GTX 900M family of graphics processors in its latest drivers. The firm said that the GPUs were not designed to support overclocking. After the move caused massive outrage among enthusiasts, who use their high-end notebooks to play the latest PC games, the chip developer promised to return the capability in its next drivers. However, it then transpired that the company started to block overclocking support in vBIOS on its MXM cards carrying the GeForce GTX 900M chips.

Notebook makers have rights to modify vBIOS of graphics adapters they get from Nvidia. Therefore, it should not be a problem for MSI to re-enable overclocking capabilities of the GeForce GTX 965M, 970M and 980M graphics solutions.

msi_gt_80_gt80_titan

MSI is one of the leading makers of gaming notebooks, therefore, it is not surprising at all that the company wants its laptops to have no drawbacks, such as limitations of overclocking. MSI’s flagship GT80 Titan gaming personal computer features two GeForce GTX 980M in SLI mode, up to four SSDs and a mechanical keyboard. The machine was designed to be upgradeable and handle different components. While the machine is packed with performance, it has a lot of headroom for overclocking too. KitGuru recently reviewed the MSI GT80 Titan and found it “most powerful laptop on the market” that does not accept any compromises.

It remains to be seen how other notebook vendors react to Nvidia’s initiative to ban overclocking of its notebook GPUs. If MSI and a couple of other suppliers re-activate support of overclocking in their laptops, they will get a competitive advantage over those, who do not. As a result, conservative notebook vendors will have to follow. But what if Nvidia manages to persuade everyone that overclocking is too dangerous?

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: MSI is clearly doing the right thing. Even Intel offers microprocessors with unlocked multiplier for mobile computers with unlocked multiplier to enable their overclocking. Moreover, there are notebook suppliers, such as Alienware, who sell gaming laptops with factory-overclocked processors. Hence, while Nvidia can make notebook GPU overclocking difficult, it will unlikely completely eliminate it.

Although Nvidia Corp. recently said that its future drivers for GeForce GTX 900M-series graphics adapters for mobile computers will re-enable overclocking support for the notebook GPUs, there are reports that the company continues to block overclocking, but this time using a vBIOS setting.

A BIOS mod enthusiast from TechInferno.com forum recently revealed that Nvidia had begun shipping new GeForce GTX 900M-series graphics adapters with a vBIOS that blocks GPU overclocking. This means that from now on MXM cards featuring Nvidia GeForce graphics processors for laptops shipped inside notebooks or sold separately will not support overclocking out-of-the-box. Previously Nvidia blocked overclocking functionality in its drivers, but promised to return the capability in March.

Manufacturers of gaming laptops featuring Nvidia GeForce GTX 900M GPUs in many cases have rights to modify vBIOS and re-activate overclocking support. However, it is unclear how that affects warranty and support from Nvidia. In a lot of cases OEMs would likely prefer to ship laptops without overclocking capability to limit their own risks.

End-users can re-flash their new GeForce GTX 970M or 980M graphics adapters with older vBIOS versions to enable overclocking. However, it will likely be impossible to flash modified versions of vBIOS to current and upcoming MXM modules since NvFlash, a program developed by Nvidia for re-flashing GeForce graphics solutions, blocks unsigned (hacked) versions of vBIOS.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_980_maxwell_gm204_1

Nvidia’s decision to block overclocking capabilities of mobile GPUs has made many of its customers very upset. While it is relatively easy to damage a notebook graphics adapter by overheating as a result of overclocking, it should be noted that many gaming laptops have sophisticated cooling systems that can dissipate more heat than even an overclocked GPU can generate. Moreover, Nvidia works closely with OEMs to find the best combination of clock-rates, cooling systems and fan speeds. The company has no need to limit overclocking on all GeForce GTX 900M MXM modules it sells.

It is unknown how many notebooks and notebook suppliers are currently affected by the limitation. At least some laptop vendors will likely re-enable GeForce GTX 900M overclocking, but, it is possible that many of PC makers will not do this.

Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Looks like Nvidia wants to prohibit overclocking of mobile graphics processors using any means necessary. While the company probably wants to minimize its own risks, the move will naturally anger many of its customers. Still, taking into account the fact that Nvidia dominates notebook gaming GPU market and AMD has nothing that offers performance similar to that of the GTX 970M/980M, it does not look like the Santa Clara, California-based GPU vendor has any stimulus to re-enable overclocking now. Still, once AMD releases a mobile GPU that beats Nvidia’s high-end “Maxwell” chips and offers overclocking, Nvidia will have to react somehow.

Nvidia Corp. said on Thursday that it will bring back support of GeForce GTX 900M overclocking in its forthcoming drivers. The company did so after owners of notebooks featuring the aforementioned graphics adapters for mobile PCs got very upset about the lack of overclocking support in the latest drivers.

Last week the company disabled overclocking of GeForce GTX 900M-series graphics adapters for notebooks claiming that they were “not designed to support overclocking” and that running graphics processors at frequencies that exceed default could “result in non-functional systems, reduced notebook life, or many other effects.” The GPU developer called overclocking support a “bug in the drivers” and said that Nvidia had just “fixed” it.

Maxwell_GM204_DIE_3D_V17_Final

Taking into account that integration of virtually all mobile graphics processors is a result of collaboration between a GPU developer and a notebook maker, who determine the best combination of clock-rates, cooling system, BIOS settings and other things, running mobile GPUs at higher frequencies and exceeding thermals is clearly risky. However, many gaming notebooks have very sophisticated cooling systems and have a lot of headroom for overclocking, which is something many end-users used to get higher framerates in games.

“We obsess over every possible optimization so that you can enjoy a perfectly stable machine that balances game, thermal, power, and acoustic performance,” wrote PeterS, a representative for Nvidia, in a statement. “Still, many of you enjoy pushing the system even further with overclocking.”

Restricting overclocking quickly caused a massive outrage among gamers, who use notebooks to play the latest PC titles. Fortunately, Nvidia listened to its customers and announced that it will bring overclocking support back in one of the future releases of GeForce drivers.

“Our recent driver update disabled overclocking on some [GeForce] GTX[-based] notebooks,” said the spokesman for the GPU developer. “We heard from many of you that you would like this feature enabled again. So, we will again be enabling overclocking in our upcoming driver release next month for those affected notebooks.”

Those gamers, who are eager to regain overclocking capability right away, can revert back to GeForce drivers version 344.75.

nvidia_geforce_gtx_980_maxwell_gm204_1

Every overclocker clearly knows that overclocking is a dangerous thing that could damage hardware. However, disabling overclocking is clearly not a good solution because in many cases relatively safe overclocking is possible and is used by gamers. A good thing is that Nvidia understood this rather quickly and promised to re-enable overclocking. Unfortunately, the reasons why the company decided to restrict overclocking are still completely unclear.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that sales of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 900M graphics processing units are dramatically higher than sales of all their predecessors, it might make sense for Nvidia to disable overclocking so to avoid potential problems with a relatively large amount of laptop computers. Apparently, the company decided to share the risks with its customers and notebook makers by re-enabling overclocking.

When MicroStar International (MSI) introduced its truly monstrous GT80 gaming laptop last year, the company clearly impressed the whole world with a fully-fledged mechanical keyboard as well as with extreme performance such system could deliver. What MSI did not say last November were exact specifications of the system as well as its starting price. At the CES 2015, MSI finally announced pricing details, without any surprises, the price tag is as extreme as performance.

As reported, the MSI GT80 Titan laptop in its maximum configuration is powered by quad-core Intel Core i7-4980HQ “Haswell” microprocessor as well as two GeForce GTX 980M 8GB in SLI mode. The system is expected to feature up to 24GB of DDR3L memory (up to 32GB possible with 16GB SO-DIMMs), up to four M.2 solid-state drives in RAID 0 mode for maximum performance and a 1TB hard disk drive with 7200rpm spindle speed for maximum amount of storage. The system is also equipped with SteelSeries mechanical keyboard with MX Brown switches, Qualcomm Atheros Killer DoubleShot Pro network solution that supports Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi 802.11ас (and gives priority to traffic generated by games), Dynaudio and Creative Sound Blaster Cinema audio system, 1080p webcam and so on. All the modern interfaces like USB 3.0, mini DisplayPort and HDMI are also present. Check out our video preview of the MSI GT80 Titan.

While the system’s internals seem to offer the best what the technology could possibly provide today, MSI could not find a proper ultra-high-definition (4K, 3840*2160) or even a beyond full-high-definition 18.4” display panel. As a consequence, the GT80 Tital will ship with a Samsung’s PLS display with full-HD (1920*1080) resolution, something that is not good enough for an extreme gaming machine nowadays. Over time, MSI can upgrade the monitor of its GT80 Titan, but only when and if appropriate panels become available.

One of the key features of the GT80 Titan is its easy-to-open chassis, something that allows great upgradeability when current top-notch components become outdated. While it is easy to obtain new SO-DIMM memory modules, M.2 solid-state drives or 2.5” hard disk drives and upgrade them at home, it is relatively hard to get graphics processing units in MXM form-factor. To actually enable its customers to upgrade the key component of any gaming PC, MSI teamed up with its system integrator partners – such as iBuyPower, XoticPC, GentechPC, and PowerNotebook in the U.S. – who agreed to upgrade systems eventually. Owners will have to ship their machines to the aforementioned companies and pay for the upgrades, after completing the job, they will ship the machines back to the owners along with old GPUs, reports AnandTech. It remains to be seen how everything will work in other parts of the world, but, at least, it is clear that MSI wants its system to be upgradeable.

Since mechanical keyboard requires a lot of space for switches, the GT80 Titan is 49.1mm thick and weighs 4.7 kilograms. Due to its dimensions, weight and minimal battery life, it is unlikely that the system will ever be used as a laptop to work on the road. Still, it is remarkable how much performance MSI has managed to squeeze into a mobile form-factor.

msi_gt80_titan

While MSI’s GT80 Titan laptop will offer remarkable performance, especially for a PC in clamshell form-factor, its price will also be one of the highest in the industry. The GT80 Titan will be commercially available next week with the starting price of $3299, reports PCPerspective; a version for $3499 includes the faster Core i7-4940MX processor. Default configuration is unknown, but it is unlikely that they sport the best memory, storage and graphics options.

Nvidia Corp. on Thursday reported its financial results for the third quarter of its fiscal 2015, which ended on the 26th of October, 2014. The company earned record revenue in a single quarter thanks to increased sales of all of its products, including all types of graphics processing units as well as Tegra system-on-chips.

Nvidia’s revenue for the Q3 FY2015 totaled $1.225 billion, up 16 per cent from $1.05 billion a year earlier and up 11 per cent from $1.10 billion the previous quarter. Nvidia’s net income for the quarter was $173 million, operating expenses were around $463 million, whereas gross margin was 55.2 per cent. Revenue for the first three quarters of fiscal 2015 was a record $3.43 billion, up 15 per cent from $2.99 billion a year earlier.

Sales of Nvidia GPUs in Q3 2015 were up 11 per cent sequentially and 13 per cent year-over-year. According to Colette Kress, chief financial officer of Nvidia, The GPU business grew due to the launch of the new GeForce GTX 900-series “Maxwell” products and the seasonal increase in demand for consumer PCs. In addition, Nvidia’s datacenter platform revenue increased as a result of continued strength in GPU acceleration opportunities. The company claims that during the quarter it signed “large” contracts with cloud service providers and government customers.

Sales of Nvidia Tegra application processors for mobile, consumer and automotive applications were up 6 per cent quarter-over-quarter as well as 51 per cent year-over-year. Ms. Kress claims that Tegra sales were led by automobile infotainment systems, mobile devices, embedded systems, and the onset of Shield tablet sales. Automobile infotainment system revenue nearly doubled year over year.

“Nvidia’s focus on creating visual computing platforms for datacenter, mobile and PC drove record revenue this quarter,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of Nvidia. “Growth drivers have kicked in for us on several fronts. High-performance computing, virtualization and web service providers have created demand for our GPU-accelerated datacenter platforms. Automakers are using Tegra to help reinvent the driving experience. And our new Maxwell architecture is a giant leap forward that has triggered a major upgrade cycle by PC gamers.”

For the Q4 FY2015 the company expects revenue of around $1.2 billion, operating expenses of approximately $470 million and gross margin of about 55.2 per cent.

KitGuru Says: Unfortunately, Nvidia does not provide a detailed revenue split and it is unclear how significantly the launch of the GeForce GTX 970/980 and the GeForce GTX 970M/980M affected the company’s sales. Keeping in mind that there were no major announcements regarding Tesla or Quadro products (even though Nvidia mentions certain design wins now), it looks like gaming GPUs based on the Maxwell architecture indeed drove Nvidia’s revenue to the record levels

Notebooks with huge displays designed for gamers and professionals have always been somewhat controversial: while they did provide desktop-class performance, they never offered comfort of desktop PCs and were not truly mobile or upgradeable. As a result, in the recent years the popularity of such PCs significantly decreased. Nonetheless, there are companies who try to innovate and make huge laptops viable again.

MicroStar International on Friday officially introduced its unique GT80 Titan laptop with 18.4” display that combines incredible performance with easy upgradeability and mechanical keyboard, for the first time in history. The MSI GT80 Titan is to be powered by quad-core Intel Core i7 “Haswell” microprocessor for laptops and two GeForce GTX 980M graphics adapters in SLI configuration. The system is expected to feature up to 32GB of DDR3L memory, M.2 solid-state drives in RAID 0 mode for maximum performance and a 1TB hard disk drive with 7200rpm spindle speed for maximum amount of storage.

msi_gt80_titan_1

The unique thing about MSI’s GT80 Titan is a mechanical keyboard with red backlighting based on Cherry MX Brown switches and made by SteelSeries. The keyboard also sports rather unique touchpad that can act like a keypad as well. Since mechanical keyboard require a lot of space for switches, the GT80 Titan is 49.1mm thick and weighs 4.7 kilograms. According to MSI, this is not the world’s thickest notebook, though. Many gaming laptops are even thicker and weight even more despite of the fact that they have membrane keyboards.

“As the first of its kind, the MSI GT80 Titan takes a step into the future by integrating a proper mechanical keyboard with Cherry switches into the 18-inch mobile gaming beast,” said Eric Kuo, vice president of global sales and marketing at MSI Notebook. “Apart from this, the GT80 also features Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M graphics, Intel's best and latest mobile CPU as well as our usual selection of carefully developed MSI gaming technologies.”

Another unique feature of the GT80 Titan is the fact that its hardware can be easily accessed by removing the front-panel of the laptop. This allows end-users to easily upgrade the system or clean the dust from the inside. Typically, upgrading notebooks requires a lot of hassle and skills.

msi_gt80_titan

MSI remains tight-lipped about the rest of the GT80 Titan’s specifications. The 18.4” display of the laptop will feature at least full-HD resolution (1920*1080), but it is logical to expect the company to provide its customers a choice and offer screens with up to 4K (3840*2160) resolution. While MSI yet has to confirm that, it is possible that the GT80 Titan integrates Qualcomm Atheros Killer DoubleShot Pro network solution that supports Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi 802.11ас (and gives priority to traffic generated by games), Dynaudio and Creative Sound Blaster Cinema audio system, 1080p webcam and so on. Quite naturally the laptop will feature USB 3.0, mini DisplayPort and HDMI interfaces. It is unknown whether the unit also features an optical disc drive.

Keeping in mind the weight and the dimensions of the MSI GT80 Titan, it is hard to expect its owners to carry it with themselves every day. The notebook will be used as a replacement for a desktop-type PC and will likely sit on a desk 99 per cent of the time. While the system most likely has a battery, MSI has not revealed its capacity.

MSI GT80 Titan is projected to be commercially available later this year or early in 2015. The price will vary depending on configuration, but do not expect it to be anywhere close to affordable, extreme performance comes at a cost.

KitGuru Says: Without any doubts, the MSI GT80 Titan is a performance beast: it features ultra-fast mobile CPUs and GPUs, a mechanical keyboard and high-performance storage. A big question is how far MSI wants to go with this monster. Theoretically, it could let owners to further overclock components, getting extreme levels of performance out of a clamshell PC. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether the company will actually do that.
