Last week during Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest, we finally got the long-rumoured gameplay reveal for Elden Ring, as well as a release date. From Software has been working on this game for a long time now, with George R. R. Martin involved as a writer. Now thanks to a new interview, we know more about Martin's involvement in the game's development.

The interview, spotted by an Elden Ring fan account on Twitter (via GamesRadar), includes Game of Thrones author, George R. R. Martin, talking about his time working on Elden Ring. He confirms that his work on the project was completed “many years ago”, laying down the worldbuilding and characters for From Software to build upon.

With Martin helped out on establishing characters and in-world lore, it sounds like From Software's own writing team will have constructed the main story and expanded on Martin's initial ideas from the earlier stages of development.

Elden Ring is currently scheduled to release on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5 on the 21st of January 2022.

KitGuru Says: Elden Ring continues to have a lot of hype behind it, hopefully the final game delivers on that in early 2022. What did you all think of Elden Ring's re-reveal last week?

In the absence of a fifth series for a while yet and potentially even a greater wait for the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, it can of course be tempting to read fan forums, or delve into theories about where the series is going, but be careful. If you really want the ending of the saga to be a surprise, it would be better not to, as Martin has now revealed that some fans have figured out the end point of the series.

During an interview with the Telegraph, where he revealed that female fans keep asking him to write more gay sex scenes into the books, he admitted that he'd struggled with the idea of whether to change the ending, since some had already guessed their way to the final conclusion. Ultimately though, he settled on not doing so, at it would undo a lot of the hard work he's put in subtlety hinting at where it's going.

You can't have it all figured out, as even Martin hasn't decided every character's fate

“I want to surprise and delight my reader and take them in directions they didn't see coming,” he said. “But I can't change the plans. That's one of the reasons I used to read the early fan boards back in the 90s but stopped. One, I didn't have the time, but two is this very issue.”

Most fan theories he says, are way off the mark, as creative and interesting as they are, but a few have gotten it right.

If you have read a bunch of fan theories however and are feeling a little crestfallen that you might get to the end without much of a surprise, then don't fret too much, as Martin suggests that only “one or two,” fans have gotten it right. That would suggest that some of the more popular suggestions, perhaps about a certain person's lineage, may not be correct after all.

But if you think you're one of those clever fans that has it all figured out, keeping guessing, as even Martin doesn't know quite where some of the story is headed. The main characters have their futures mapped out in his mind, but many minor ones have undetermined fates. Consider too, that while there are two more books planned for the series, Martin has suggested there could be more. And beyond that even, the TV show may overtake the books and offer up an entirely different ending to the saga due to its necessity to keep filming.

KitGuru Says: For anyone that's read the books, let's keep the spoilers to a minimum in the comments please.

If you were one of the eager thousands that waited five years+ to get your hands on Dance with Dragons, the fifth book in George R.R. Martin's epic Song of Ice and Fire series (on which the Game of Thrones TV show is based) then you've probably been champing at the bit ever since. However it looks like the wait between novels might not be quite so long this time, as Martin's editor, Anne Groell has revealed that she expects a finished manuscript to come through from the long time fantasy writer “reasonably soon.”

Speaking in a Q&A over at SuvuduUniverse, Groell was asked straight up, “when will TWOW be released?” While she said there was no release date planned – though she assured the world she would be the first to break it when there was – she knows George is hard at work at it and that she expects it to arrive “reasonably soon.” As it stands, she has 168 pages of totally finished book, but knows there is plenty more. George has hinted at a lot of unseen chapters being finished and has referenced a work she hasn't seen yet, so in her mind, it won't be long before we see The Winds of Winter out in the wild.

If you're worried though that even once she does get it, we're talking a lot more work to edit down his no doubt mammoth manuscript, apparently Groell doesn't take that long to work on one. With the previous book, A Dance with Dragons, she took just two weeks – though admittedly working 10 hour days – to edit the book down and that included re-reading all the previous books to make sure she remembered the entire back story and could therefore help George remind readers that weren't quite so dedicated as she.

Groell also went out of her way to highlight the Song of Ice and Fire App, which is available on Android and iOS. It features a lot of information about the books and the show, including some preview chapters of the Winds of Winter for those that can't wait.

KitGuru says: It goes without saying for those that haven't read the books, be very careful with the app, as it's character statuses and other information are at least a couple of a season's ahead of you.

One of the biggest choices for modern media consumers is whether to get their content legally, or illegally. While the former is certainly becoming easier, cheaper and faster, often times the latter is just more convenient. Most companies ignore this and do idiotic things, like sue their fan base, or try and block the websites that link to the content. HBO however, is actually thinking cause and effect and is doing something to improve its own offerings instead of trying to stamp out its competitors – legal or otherwise.

This has all come to light because of Game of Thrones, one of HBO's most popular shows of the past few years and set to be again this year if the hype is anything to go by. However it was also the post pirated show in 2012, so the network is considering what it can do to reduce that in 2013.

“We think the key to combating piracy is to make content like Game of Thrones available worldwide within the smallest window possible,” said Jeff Cusson, HBO's senior vice president of corporate affairs. To combat that this year, the show will be available in 176 territories shortly after its US premier.

Tyrion
If Tyrion isn't your favourite character, we can't be friends any more.

Of course any sort of delay is going to lead to piracy, as people in countries that aren't the US want to know what happens. A launch worldwide on the same day would go further in reducing piracy.

TorrentFreak has some other suggestions for the network, such as a season pass for Game of Thrones alone – as at the moment, anyone wanting to watch the show needs to pay for an HBO subscription. If that's the only show you watch, it's not really worth it.

You could also allow for all episodes to be viewed as soon as the season launches, like Netflix' new House of Cards drama.

KitGuru Says: While it's still far from perfect, at least HBO is thinking in the right vein. It'll be interesting to see if the efforts help reduce piracy and if other media companies catch on.
