At this point, it is fair to say that The Last of Us Part II has had an incredibly successful launch. The game not only received universal critical acclaim, but also sold over 4 million copies in 3 days – a record for PlayStation. Now it has been confirmed that in June, the month of its launch, The Last of Us Part II sold more copies in the UK than the rest of the top ten combined.

Each month, the GfK reveals the top selling physical games for the UK market. For the month of June, the top ten best selling games were:

  1. The Last of Us Part II
  2. FIFA 20
  3. Ring Fit Adventure
  4. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  5. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  7. Grand Theft Auto 5
  8. Minecraft (Switch)
  9. The Last of Us: Remastered
  10. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

It is unsurprising to see that The Last of Us Part II succeeded in becoming the best selling game of the month. What is surprising however is the fact that it sold more than the rest of the top ten combined.

The Last of Us Part II launched on the 19th of June, and so was on the market for only 11 days, in comparison to all the other titles which were on sale for the entire month. Of course, it is worth noting that none of the other top 10 games were new to June and so it is expected that a major first-party title would sell well in comparison.

Regardless, the sales achievement of The Last of Us part II is mighty, and when combined with its critical reception there is little doubt that the Naughty Dog developed franchise is now one of PlayStation’s most precious.

Over at the Distree 2013 event in Monte Carlo, the cream of the European, Middle East and African (EMEA) IT industry have gathered for 3 days of friendly connection, competitive jostling and a little mutual commiseration. Alongside the technology show itself, break out rooms are filled with briefers eager to share market data. KitGuru has the inside track from research giant GfK.

There are many ways of doing research. They don't necessarily fall into camps of ‘good and bad', but the data and predictions provided need to be judged in light of the various methodologies. While IDC spends a huge amount of time speaking with vendors like HP and Dell about what they ‘sell in' to the channel, Context purchases ‘sell out' data from distributors. For their part, GfK spends a lot of time doing very in-depth surveys into the people who actually do the buying in order to try and extrapolate patterns for the market overall.

Based out of Nuremberg, David Tordinava is a senior marketing consultant – specialising in the choices that consumers make across EMEA.

For a room packed with eager channel folk, he painted a somewhat optimistic picture of where the market will be going, although when you see the main chart, you might wonder if his optimism is a little premature.

The overall trend is 'up and down' and, to the extreme right, it's heading up. Just.

.
According to GfK, one of the key drivers for an increase in technology sales is that we are at the beginning of a new replacement cycle.

The challenge for the traditional IT players/products, is that there is no guarantee that the increase will be in the traditional goods – PCs, laptops, games etc.

The whole thing can be skewed by a number of events, for example the Euro 2012 football tournament caused a big spike in LED/Smart TV sales for the region, which counts toward the ‘upward trend', but probably doesn't help ‘computer' companies at all.

Here's a GfK video with an over excited person explaining the impact of major sports events on technology sales.

KitGuru says: Given how badly confidence in the IT sector has been in recent years, it's got to be worth taking some positive feeling from this new upward trend, even if the ‘upward' part is quite anemic.

If your local supermarket starts to hand out free milk, how much milk will you buy from another store?  We reckon ‘much less'. Data just in to KitGuru highlights the present disparity in sales for GeForce and Radeon in the channel. The abacus gets a dusting off as we ponder the significance of software sales data.

A huge number of you downloaded the KitGuru Annual Awards article at the start of January. It covers all of the major component areas, with detailed analysis before a winner is appointed in each category. After reading it – and then following the links to both the 6GB Sapphire 7970 Toxic and VTX3D 7870 Black – you'd be forgiven for thinking that AMD pushed out some of the best cards in 2012. And you'd be right.

But when it comes to the market as a whole, most people buy mainstream cards. In that market segment, a lot of responsibility goes to the reseller/store where you buy from. They will be pushing offers based on the stock available in the channel. In other words, if there's loads of nVidia stock in the market, then THAT is what you will see on the shelves – which will influence what you end up buying.

When AMD launched its ‘Never Settle' campaign for Q4, it was warmly welcomed by gamers who could get games like FarCry 3, Hit Man Absolution and Sleeping Dogs bundled with every card from the Radeon HD 7770 and above.

So that brings us to the headline.

Fact: The top selling game in our market for December was FarCry 3. That means that more money was taken in our stores, for Far Cry 3, than any other game.

But it was FREE with many AMD cards.

So who would BUY this game?

We reckon it must be people who did NOT get it for free.

Which must mean a significant number of nVidia GeForce customers did make the purchase.

Over at CES, nVidia's former head of global GPU sales, Roy Taylor, is busy plotting a crusade toward redressing the balance between AMD and nVidia in the channel. AMD's CSO John Byrne has been quoted as saying “Roy’s enthusiasm and passion for technology evangelization will help strengthen our channel business as we bring new low-power APUs and discrete GPUs to market in 2013”.  Hmm…  We'll revisit this area in a while and let you know what progress (good or bad) is being made.

According to Roy Taylor, it's a jungle out there - survival of the fittest and all that

KitGuru says: One of the reasons you need to pay a game publisher so much for a bundling deal, is because the software companies know that sales will be lost in the high street. Doing a deal on a game, which subsequently hits number one spot week after week, is not quite the perfect result for a bundler.
