Watching ‘The Social Network', you can see just how much Facebook's founders value ‘up time'. They are almost maniac about it. In the real world, the globe's second biggest site does a great job of staying up and running, but something strange seems to have hit the interwibble this evening. KitGuru puts personal pic updates on pause to investigate.

Seeing Facebook down for a few seconds for a few people is quite unusual. Seeing it being unavailable for huge chunks of the globe for quite a while is very unusual.

To back up the sense that ‘Maybe the Mayans were right', GMail decides to pick the same time/date/space vector to fall over as well.

At the time of typing, the web is crackling with reports of outages – at least one of which belongs to us. You're reading it.

How long it takes to re-initialise a service as big as GMail or Facebook is anyone's guess.

Let's hope they have a backup.

GMail went down first, Facebook followed to provide moral support

KitGuru says: It may well be ‘panic mode over' by the time you read this, but the outages for both Facebook and GMail were substantial – so we'll be interested in seeing what the official line is from their respective spin doctors. We'd LOVE to be able to blame timeslime.

Google had problems yesterday with their GMAIL service and they have yet to reveal the issues which affected around 5 million people.

Google have been proud of their uptime, breaking records of 99 percent since 2007. The service was down for 2 percent of the audience yesterday, totaling around an hour.

Google techs have yet to explain what caused the downtime with a vague statement saying “We've implemented a fix and users should now be able to access their mail.  We apologize for the inconvenience.”

They announced the problems at 9.42 am Pacific time yesterday and by 10.24 am the email administrator said “Google Mail service has already been restored for some users.”

22 minutes later another message was sent, reading “The problem with Google Mail should be resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better.”

Many users reported the downtime via Google+, Twitter and Facebook platforms.

This tarnishes Google's clean record, as they have experienced downtime only once in the last three years and seven times since the service launched in 2007.

Google reported 99.894% uptime in 2010 and 99.99% uptime in 2011. By industry standards this is exceptionally good.

Kitguru says: Where you affected yesterday by the downtime?

Google have claimed that the Chinese government are blocking the Gmail service, after many users have complained they cannot access the site.

Users of Gmail in China have not been able to access accounts and have had issues sending email and using other services for the last two weeks.

Google issued a statement which said “There is no technical issue on our side, We have checked extensively. This is a government blockage carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail.”

China has the largest Internet population, with 457 million Web users, but they are very strict with the content they allow to be shown to their citizens. They block pornography, gambling and content which is critical of the Communist Party. They already block YouTube and social networking websites operated by Facebook and Twitter. Google moved their search engine service out of mainland China last year and have redirected users to Hong Kong to avoid having to comply with the countries web censorship rules.

There are fears that the Chinese government will become more aggressive over time and will start blocking more and more websites and services.
