Kim Dotcom might not be living the good life so much these days, having moved out of his mansion and facing extradition, but he did once. Back before his arrest in 2012, he did just about whatever he wanted, when he wanted, as his recently re-released song, ‘Good Life' attests to. Featuring footage shot before the downfall of MegaUpload, Dotcom claims that the video cost as much as $24 million to make.

It starts with shots of the Dotcom rented mansion in New Zealand, which the German entrepreneur recently vacated after several years of residence. Many of the man's cars are seen on its driveway, most heavily customised and used in races like the Gumball 3000 and in private events held by Dotcom on the Nürburgring (as per NZHerald).

The video also shows a purported $10 million yacht holiday that Dotcom took several years prior, as well as various activities, all with sweeping camera shots from helicopters and some relatively impressive CGI too.

Part of the associated costs with this video however come from the perfection that Dotcom reportedly levied against those involved in its production, retaking shots over and over to achieve the perfect effect. Such are the days of an internet millionaire; as Dotcom himself says in the song, “sleep all day, party all night, have whatever you want, whenever you like.”

But if all of this was shot back in 2011, why did Dotcom only just release it? Partly because of his extradition trial proceedings, partly because of his founding of the Internet Mana political party. Flaunting wealth, especially when attempting to raise awareness of often underprivileged Maori minority would not have been a smart political play.

Apparently though now Dotcom hopes to use the video to inspire people. Its description reads: “A fat kid and school dropout from a poor family made his dreams come true. You can do it too.”

KitGuru Says: Do you feel inspired? Or perhaps just a little green? That yacht does look like a lot of fun.

Kim Dotcom might be most well known for his file lockers, Megaupload and Mega, but he's also put a lot of time and resources into developing Baboom, a music sharing and sales platform for the new generation. In a new video, Baboom's head of content and platform, Mikee Tucker has been talking about how Baboom plans to disrupt and reinvent the industry to put the power of distribution, sale and promotion, back in the hands of the artists.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0JpheFIVRk']

Many of these aims will come about in the simple page layout design of Baboom. Combining social networking, sales and music streaming in one convenient fan page, Baboom makes the process incredibly easy. Artists can provide music for free with advertising, as well as making songs available for purchase and download. There's also links to their other content, a live twitter stream and competition options to help artists engage directly with fans around their music, rather than just their opinions or pictures like other sites.

baboom

While Baboom still has yet to launch, a demo version of the site was put up when Dotcom launched his latest album, Good Times, showing how it can be streamed, downloaded, viewed in HD (in the case of music videos) all through a single page.

KitGuru Says: Considering I'm a bit of a stickler for just listening to compilation mixes on Youtube, or just finding long playlists on Soundcloud, I'm quite interested to see what Dotcom can do with this. It may end up just like the new MySpace though which tried to do something similar: essentially forgotten.

Internet entrepreneur, Megaupload founder and now musician, Kim Dotcom, released his first full length album “Good Times,” recently, with a big campaign on his still-in-beta music service, Baboom and with real world posters. Now though he's offering up a total prize pack of $15,000 for whoever makes the best remix and video of one of his songs.

Announced on his twitter with the message: “#GoodTimes contest on #Baboom: $5k for the best remix $10k for the best video,” Dotcom also provided a link to download high quality .wav files of each of the album's main tracks. The best song remix will win $5,000, whilst the best video will take home $10,000.

goodtimescontest

There's no word on how long the competition will run for, whether's it's worldwide (presumably) and what will be done with the remixes and videos if they win, but either way, if you're handy with Cubase or a camera, you might be able to win some real money just through a bit of creative work on a Kim Dotcom song.

Interestingly, the list of songs Dotcom wants you to play with, doesn't include the one standout track from the album, Party Amplifier, which was the one that most often received praise from critics, even if a lot of the others failed to make much of an impression.

The ones you'll get to play with include:

  • Good Times
  • Party Electricity
  • Good Life
  • Change Your Life
  • Amazing

Kitguru Says: Anyone think they might have a go at this?
