A number of Google Drive users have experienced a loss of data, it has been reported this week. Roughly 350 users have been affected so far, including some who pay for Google Drive's more premium tiers.

As reported by Bleeping Computer, complaints started racking up on the Google Support forum. In some cases, users have found that they are missing data from as far back as May of this year, which should help Google narrow down the timeline a bit for its investigation.

Google has acknowledged the issue and is currently looking into it. Support staff are encouraging users not to disconnect any accounts from Drive, or move their app data folder while it investigates the root cause.

The exact cause of the problem remains undisclosed as the investigation is ongoing. However, this incident does serve as a reminder to utilise multiple backups. While cloud backup services have become a popular alternative to local storage over the last decade, relying on one source still carries risks. Local backups that you control directly are always going to be the best solution but failing that, it may be worth utilising two cloud backup services to mitigate loss of important data in the event of a disruption to one service.

We will update this story once Google has more to share.

Laptops based on Google’s Chrome operating system – Chromebooks – are known for their limited local storage capacity and necessity to rely on cloud storage solutions that cost money. Luckily for those, who plan to buy a Chromebook this year, Google now offers 1TB of online storage for free for a limited time.

During this holiday season – between now and the 1st of January, 2015 – those who purchase a a new, eligible Chromebook starting at $199 gets 1TB of Google Drive storage for two years – almost $240 in value – absolutely free, Google announced on Friday. Given that most Chromebooks come with only 16GB of NAND flash storage, which is not enough for normal work, the offer should make Chromebooks a little more competitive.

The move should help Google’s partners to sell more Chromebooks during the holiday season and give the search giant and PC makers an idea how free online storage affects sales. Perhaps, if Google and its allies find that 1TB Google Drive bundled with a Chromebook significantly spurs demand for Chromebooks, expect them to offer free online storage with future notebooks featuring Chrome OS.

The main problem of Chromebooks is that they require Google services and Internet connection to offer users advanced functionality. Since the quality of Internet connections varies, many people just play it safe and get familiar Windows-based laptops. Still, the situation is gradually improving and there are programs for the Chrome OS that can work offline as well. Moreover, if every Chromebook is shipped with 1TB Google Drive, many users will get an impression that such mobile PCs offer similar amount of storage as traditional laptops featuring Apple Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows operating systems.

KitGuru Says: It is completely unclear how significantly free cloud storage spurs demand for Chromebooks. Would you buy a Chromebook instead of a regular notebook provided that you were given 1TB of cloud storage for two years free?

Following yesterday's news that Chrome had left behind the beta tag on Android it is now available on iOS. Alongside this, Google's cloud storage system now has its own application for iOS. If you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 4.3 or newer you will be able to install Google's browser while Drive is available on the same devices but requires iOS 5 or newer.

Chrome for iOS looks identical to the Android version and as you might expect you get full access to all of your desktop bookmarks and passwords. Users can have an unlimited number of tabs open which can be switched between quickly by swiping off the side of the screen. For those wanting a change from Safari and already use Google Chrome on their desktop you can find Chrome in the App Store.

Google Drive offers users with 5 GB of free cloud storage and now supports offline Google Docs editing. It can be found in the App Store now.

KitGuru says: Be sure to check out these very useful applications on your iDevice of choice.

Google's Drive cloud service has just been officially launched which gives up to 5GBs of free cloud storage and an array of helpful sharing and collaboration features. However, while Google's fresh blog posting makes it clear today is the official introduction, it is yet to allow for new sign-ups via the official Google Drive website. We presume the gate to its cloud service will be opened within the next 5-7 hours for all and sundry.

Today, we’re introducing Google Drive—a place where you can create, share, collaborate, and keep all of your stuff. Whether you’re working with a friend on a joint research project, planning a wedding with your fiancé or tracking a budget with roommates, you can do it in Drive. You can upload and access all of your files, including videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs and beyond.”

The new service will be available for Windows, OS X and Android straight out the gate, with iOS software support “coming soon”. The 5GBs of free storage can be supplemented via monthly payments, with 25GB costing US $2.49 a month and 100GB at US $4.99 a month. There's also the option to shell out US $49.99 for a beefy terabyte of capacity.

Google Drive will be a lot more than just a basic form of cloud storage however, as detailed via Google's official blog posting :-

Create and collaborate. Google Docs is built right into Google Drive, so you can work with others in real time on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Once you choose to share content with others, you can add and reply to comments on anything (PDF, image, video file, etc.) and receive notifications when other people comment on shared items.

Store everything safely and access it anywhere (especially while on the go). All your stuff is just… there. You can access your stuff from anywhere—on the web, in your home, at the office, while running errands and from all of your devices. You can install Drive on your Mac or PC and can download the Drive app to your Android phone or tablet. We’re also working hard on a Drive app for your iOS devices. And regardless of platform, blind users can access Drive with a screen reader.

Search everything. Search

We've been hearing a lot about Google Drive recently, Google's much anticipated cloud storage solution to compete with Dropbox and the new SkyDrive. The previous reports of 5 GB of free storage have been confirmed and should be available already (or soon) to anyone with a Google account.

As you might expect Drive works very similar to Dropbox on your PC or Mac, creating a folder on your computer where files are stored and sync with Google's servers. PC and Mac versions of the desktop client are already available and so is the Android application. Apple fans will have to wait a little while, but Drive applications are coming your way well as well. Unfortunately it looks as if Linux and Windows Phone 7 users will be the ones missing out.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKJ9KzGQq0w']

Paid storage expansions are present; 25 GB, 100 GB or 1 TB storage upgrades are available for $2.49, $4.99 and $49.99 per month respectively. When you upgrade to a paid Drive account, your Gmail account storage will expand to 25 GB.

Google Drive will also be the downfall of the Docs name; Docs files will now be integrated into your Drive folders. This does propose some interesting approaches when it comes to opening your Docs files from your PC though. Apparently opening a Docs file from your local files will open it up in the editor in Chrome, rather than a local word processor. Something I am willing to live with after the horrible folder scheme Docs had before today. Sharing, commenting and collaborating on any file is a neat feature that is built in.

You will also be able to open a vast array of file types right in the browser, supporting over 30 file types. This includes things like HD video and Photoshop; even if you don't have the program installed on your computer. Google, originally being a search engine giant, has built some impressive search tools into Drive that can scan images and other files for keywords using OCR. Image recognition is also ever-present but Google would like to point out that it is still in its early stages.

You can get started with Google Drive right here, and don't worry if your account isn't ready yet, mine isn't either.

KitGuru says: So far everything sounds good when it comes to Google Drive, but it is yet to be seen if it can outclass Dropbox and the new Skydrive.

The Google Drive rumours and reports are coming in thick and fast now, indicating the launch of the Dropbox and now SkyDrive competitor is imminent. Reports are claiming that it could launch as soon as today, Tuesday.

Google's cloud storage service, Drive, will reportedly launch sometime today

Paid storage options will be available that reportedly go all the way up to 100 GB, although there are no hints on pricing at this stage. If you're not willing to cough up extra, five gigabytes will be yours free of charge, confirming earlier rumours.

In the run up to the launch Google has bumped the storage available to Google Docs from 1 GB to 5 GB. Apparently the roll out of the extra Docs (and presumably Drive) storage is staggered, and I can confirm my account has been updated to reflect this.

In addition to all of this, some of Google's support pages have been updated to include information on how one will transfer their Docs to a new account. You can see the support page in question here.

KitGuru says: Google Drive has roughly 19 hours left in order to launch today (Pacific time), who else will be transferring over their Dropbox files as soon as it is possible?

As much as we would love to think Google's Drive cloud storage service will be a Dropbox killer, we still have to wait until it launches to know for sure. Our questions should be answered very soon though, there are reports that Google Drive will launch next week, possibly as early as Tuesday.

Google's cloud storage service is due to launch next week

What Google Drive will have over Dropbox is more than double the base storage; where Drive will offer 5 GB of cloud storage free of charge, Dropbox offers 2 GB. There will also likely be extra incentives to increase storage spaces, as well as the option to cough up some cash for extra room.

Google Drive will work within desktop folders on PC and Macs, similar to how Dropbox operates. There will also be applications for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets.

The cloud storage platform will allow syncing of folders and files between devices like many current competitors but it will also be closely integrated with Google services such as Docs and Picasa.

While not much else is currently known, we do know what its URL will be: http://drive.google.com.

KitGuru says: I know I'll be switching over to Drive next week as an avid consumer of everything Google.

Google Drive has been in the press a lot in the past few days thanks to a new set of rumours and leaks. A couple of days ago there was a rumour that Google's cloud storage solution would have 2 GB of storage, with incentives offering more storage, just like what Dropbox currently does. Talk Android has just received word from a anonymous but reliable source that users will be allowed a generous 5 GB of free storage, as seen in the picture below.

Talk Android's screenshot clearly shows 5 GB of free storage, plus room to grow

We first heard about Google's Dropbox competitor back in early February and thanks to it coming straight from Google it will be integrated with Docs and Picasa, as well as having the ability to store and share files across devices, including smartphones and tablets.

Talk Android reports that Google Drive is set to release during the week of April 16th; within three weeks from today.

Kitguru says: Gmail tells me that there is currently “7695.505702 megabytes (and counting) of free storage.” Perhaps our Google Drive capacity will grow slowly over time.

Google has a massive ecosystem, they cover everything from mobile operating systems to blogs. Perhaps the one and only thing I can think of that they have been missing so far is a cloud storage system and if recent reports are to be believed this will soon be changing. According to the Wall Street Journal Google Drive will be launching soon but no specific window has been made public at this time.

Drive will allow people to easily store and share photos, documents and other files. For example you will be able to upload videos of whole albums to the cloud and quickly share them with a public download link. This isn't exactly new though, it is something I remember Dropbox having for some time now. Google Drive will also presumably integrate into other Google services such as Docs and Picasa.

The service will be free to a point, although it is unknown how large this limit will be. With Dropbox you currently get 2 GB for free, which you can extend by completing miscellaneous tasks. If you or your business end up wanting more storage than what is freely available you can purchase more. This pricing will apparently be cheaper than what Dropbox currently offers which is $99 and $199 for 50 and 100 GB respectively.

Kitguru says: With no launch date set just yet I am hoping for a public launch within the next month accompanied by a robust PC sync application.
