Following on from five straight months of price increases, it seems that GPU prices are finally on the decline again across Europe. According to new data gathered, the average sale price for AMD and Nvidia GPUs has dipped over the course of January, although we are still far from getting down to MSRP levels.

The data gathered and shared by 3DCenter.org until January 23rd shows that the average best price of Nvidia graphics cards is 77% more than their MSRP, an 8% reduction compared to the data from January 2nd. As for the AMD Radeon RX 6000 series, the best prices are about 67% higher than their MSRP, which translates into a 10% cut compared with January 2nd.

The Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti card had the smallest price reduction (2%), while prices for the RTX 3090, 3080 10G, 3070 Ti and 3070 were reduced by 7-9%. As for the RTX 3060 series, the Ti variant reduced by 12% and the RTX 3060 by 15%. As for the AMD Radeon RX 6000 series cards, Radeon RX 6900 XT prices remained fairly steady. However, all other RX 6000 series cards had a 12-18% price cut.

As cryptocurrency keeps devaluing, prices should reduce even more. With Ethereum going as low as $2200 and proof-of-stake coming in June, there's a chance that GPU prices will continue to trend down.

KitGuru says: It is still too early to know for sure, but the current decline in crypto could have a pretty major impact on the GPU market in the months to come.

The graphics card pricing situation appears to be moving in the right direction. Last month, GPU prices were 81-91 percent above MSRP on average, but that number has been dropping. If GPU prices continue reducing at this rate, we might see some cards finally reach MSRP pricing.

According to 3DCenter.org, availability of GPUs has been improving, including increased stock of RTX 3060 Ti and RX 6800 graphics cards. Better yet, retail pricing is trending downwards at a fairly rapid rate.

The price reduction was most noticeable on Nvidia GPUs, which were selling on average at 91% above MSRP, but it has now reduced to 53%. Currently, the RTX 3080 Ti and the RTX 3090 are the GPUs selling closest to MSRP, and the RTX 3060 Ti is the most surcharged.

As for the AMD Radeon RX 6000 series GPU prices, they have also reduced considerably, from 81% above MSRP to 53%. The Radeon RX 6900 XT is only selling 33% above MSRP, but the Radeon RX 6800 XT is still priced at 68% above MSRP.

KitGuru says: Considering the rapid decline of GPU pricing in the last month, we strongly advise you to wait for prices to stabilise. If prices keep reducing at this pace, we may see some GPUs hitting MSRP by the end of July, something most of us couldn't believe a month ago.

KitGuru readers are always active on social media, so over the weekend we asked our Facebook readers to let us know what they thought of Nvidia's current graphics card pricing. Close to a thousand of you shared your thoughts with us so today, we are sharing the results of the poll.

In our poll, just 1.4 percent of voters judged Nvidia GPU prices as ‘great value and not too expensive'. Meanwhile, 34.9 percent deemed current pricing as very expensive. A larger portion of the voters (42.2 percent) deemed current GPU prices as ‘quite expensive', indicating that there is a good chunk of people out there still willing to pony up the cash, even if prices are high. Still, the most telling metric is that just 3.3 percent of voters deem current Nvidia GPU prices as ‘reasonable'.

Currently Nvidia has a pretty broad slate of GPUs on its roster and it is rare to find one actually selling at suggested retail pricing- something that Nvidia can't actually control. The main problem with the current Pascal lineup however, is that it is quite flooded in the high-end segment. The GTX 1070 and GTX 1070Ti both squeeze in to the £400-£500 segment. Meanwhile the GTX 1080 with a custom cooler can also be found for around the £500 mark on Amazon.

From there, the GTX 1080Ti makes a big leap upwards, with custom cooled versions often going for well over £700 and some breaking the £800 barrier. With Volta on the way and very little competition from AMD's Vega GPUs, it does make us wonder what Nvidia's pricing slate will look like this time next year.

KitGuru Says: Thanks to the readers who took the time to take part in our poll. GPU prices have been interesting to follow this year, with plenty of peaks and troughs along the way. Unfortunately, the current state of things doesn't necessarily paint a bright picture for the future.

Modern graphics cards are among the most expensive components of personal computers and due to their importance for gamers they can get even more expensive, believes Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive officer of Nvidia.

Personal computers are becoming more and more popular among gamers because they offer high-quality graphics and support hundreds of popular games. As a result, gamers increase spending on computer components in a bid to further improve visual quality and performance of new titles. As a result, average selling prices (ASPs) of select computer components, including graphics cards, are increasing. According to the head of Nvidia, ASPs of graphics cards will continue to increase in the future.

“As the production value of games continue to grow, I think we are going to see our ASPs grow,” said Jen-Hsun Huang during a conference call with financial analysts and investors. “So I would say that the dynamics of thePC gaming industry is really quite healthy, both in more and more players playing and ASPs increasing because of production value.”

Nvidia’s current-generation GeForce GTX graphics cards cost from $100 to $3000. What is important here is that a lot of gamers nowadays prefer graphics boards that cost $300 and higher. Just ten years ago such gamers typically spent around $200 on a graphics card. The fact that there are gamers who buy graphics cards for $1000 – $3000 is another reason why ASPs of graphics adapters increase.

The CEO of Nvidia believes that the number of PC gamers will also grow going forward.

“There are about 100 million GeForce gamers around the world, they are active gamers around the world,” said Mr. Huang. “Yet we know there are several hundred million gamers altogether and PC gaming is becoming more and more popular for the reasons that I have mentioned already and others. My sense is that we still have quite a bit of penetration to go. So, these are the dynamics that are helping us.”

KitGuru Says: While it is clear that ASPs of mainstream GPUs are increasing, it will be interesting to see how high will actual prices of mainstream graphics adapters get in the coming years…
