Back in October of last year, Sony and the team at Polyphony Digital announced that 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport would be seeing its servers go offline permanently come the end of January 2024. With less than a month to go, GT sport has now unceremoniously been delisted meaning it can no longer be purchased.

As discovered by ResetEra user MBS, Gran Turismo Sport has quietly been delisted from the digital PlayStation Store, meaning unless you already own the game, you will not be able to purchase it digitally anymore.

Due to the licensing costs for vehicles included in the games, most tracing titles are eventually delisted and so to see GT Sport no longer being purchasable is an unfortunate – though not surprising – inevitability.

If you already own the game, you still have the next month to enjoy it, as “On January 31, 2024, at 06:00 UTC, the online services of the PlayStation 4-exclusive software ‘Gran Turismo Sport’ will come to an end.”

Full details on what will and won’t be available to play following the servers shutting down can be found HERE, however one question which remains unanswered has to do with the way GT Sport’s save system functions. Currently, you need an online connection in order to save your game, and so presumably the title will receive some sort of patch to allow for local saves at one point prior to the servers going offline.

While many agree that the current-gen Gran Turismo 7 is an improvement over GT Sport in most aspects, it is still disappointing to see yet another racing title going offline.

One month ago, PlayStation and Polyphony Digital released their biggest update yet for Gran Turismo 7. Dubbed the ‘Spec II’ update, GT7 introduced a whole host of new features including 4-player split-screen, 50 new challenges, additional events and so much more. According to the studio, Spec II has helped to double the number of active users – proving to be a massive success.

As reported by OverTake.gg, Gran Turismo 7’s development studio Polyphony Digital revealed to the publication that last month’s Spec II update helped to revitalise the already-popular racing game, saying “We just released the Spec II update and the number of active users jumped up to double what it was before that.”

While no concrete figures we shared, Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi did offer a comparison to Gran Turismo’s previous entry, GT Sport, saying “[Gran Turismo 7] has been a success and we have more users” adding that “We’ve been able to maintain a really high number of active users throughout the release. That’s something very unique to Gran Turismo, that some other titles have not been able to see. I’ve heard that in the video game industry that’s quite rare.”

Since its release back in 2021, GT7 has seen a surprising number of consistent updates, adding dozens of new vehicles alongside more ambitious inclusions such as an advanced ‘Sophy AI’ driver and full PSVR2 support. With the Spec II update being received so well, it will be interesting to see what path Polyphony Digital chooses to take with all future updates.

We previously reported that Gran Turismo 7 was set to get a ‘Big’ update at some point this week. Now, Polyphony Digital has officially announced ‘GT7 Spec II’ – bringing 4-player split-screen, over half a dozen cars and much more.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Polyphony Digital said “Ever since its debut on March 4, 2022, Gran Turismo 7 has been on an unstoppable journey of evolution, consistently pushing the envelope when it comes to providing realistic driving experiences to enthusiast gamers. Now, get ready for what may be the most epic update of them all, when the ‘Spec II’ version (Update 1.40) comes your way on November 2, 2023.”

It was already known that the update would bring with it 7 new cars – the list of which can be found HERE – but beyond this, the update adds:

  • A new cinematic introduction
  • A new original snow track based in Canada
  • Three extra menus to the Café
  • New events, including weekly challenges
  • 50 new challenges in total
  • New Master License events
  • ‘Meeting Place’ evolved to the ‘Paddocks’
  • Four player split-screen (PS5 only)
  • Photo mode improvements
  • New scapes including Polyphony Digital offices
  • A new dashboard
  • GT Sophy integration

With each successive patch, Gran Turismo 7 has gotten better and better. Spec II represents by far the biggest update yet, and thanks to the likes of GT Sophy and split-screen this free update truly feels transformative. The full details on all changes and additions can be found HERE.

Since its release last year, the team at Polyphony Digital have been diligently updating Gran Turismo 7 with a whole host of new features, cars and modes. Studio head and GT7 director Kazunori Yamauchi has now teased that a “big update” is set to drop some time this week.

Teasing the upcoming free update, Kazunori Yamauchi took to Twitter to say: “A big update is coming next week”. As he has done with all prior updates, Yamauchi also shared a veiled image of a bunch of cars which will be included as part of the patch.

Eagle-eyed fans have already figured out the models of the vehicles which are set to drop as part of the update, namely:

  • Lexus LFA 2010
  • Porsche 992 GT3 RS
  • GR-R R33 NISMO 400R
  • Mercedes Benz 190E EVO2
  • Tesla Model 3
  • Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 2018
  • Dodge Charger 1969

It is worth noting that this is likely to be but a small taste of what is to come with the update. Each previous patch has brought with it much more than just a few extra cars, and considering the fact that this update has been stated to be “big,” expect more nifty additions.

That said, even if the extent of the update is limited to the addition of these cars, the patch will still be a meaty one, including nearly double the number of vehicles when compared to previous updates.

GT7 already offered a rather comprehensive package when it launched last year, but the continued and consistent support by Polyphony Digital has helped to only further cement its identity as ‘The Real Driving Simulator’. It’ll be interesting to see what the full extent of the update holds when it arrives some time this week.

Racing titles are notorious for having relatively short post-launch lives due to the fact that included vehicles and brands need to be licensed for the games. As such, while unfortunate, it comes as no surprise that 2017’s PlayStation exclusive Gran Turismo Sport will see its servers permanently go offline early next year.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Polyphony Digital said “On January 31, 2024, at 06:00 UTC, the online services of the PlayStation 4-exclusive software ‘Gran Turismo Sport’ will come to an end. Prior to this on December 01, 2023, we will also end the distribution of purchasable Add-On items from the PlayStation Store that can be used in-game.”

They continue, “After the end of service date, it will no longer be possible to utilize online services such as the Community, Open Lobby, and Sport Mode, nor online features/items such as custom liveries. The offline portions of the game can still be played, including purchased Add-Ons. We would like to thank the many users of the Gran Turismo Sport online service since its first launch in 2017. From here on, we will continue to further improve the online services for the currently available title ‘Gran Turismo 7’ on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.”

Back in February, Polyphony Digital teamed up with Sony’s AI branch to introduce a “revolutionary superhuman racing AI racing agent” known as GT Sophy. The racer was added to Gran Turismo 7, bringing a new level of challenge for players – though only for a week. In the months since then, Sophy seems to have learned a couple new tricks – including being able to impressively drift across tracks.

Releasing a video demonstrating Sophy’s new abilities, Kaushik Subramanian – the senior research scientist at Sony AI – said:

“Over the last two years the team at Sony AI has showcased the competitive racing abilities of an AI agent called GT Sophy. The team has continued development in an effort to push the boundaries of racing. Here we demonstrate how GT Sophy has learned to drift around the track using a precise sequence of driving inputs.”

As can be seen from the video, this is not your average everyday drifting, but has Sophy performing full 360-spins leading into a corner drift all the while recovering seamlessly.

Subramanian continued, “It’s always surprising to see the unique ways in which Sophy learns to drive around the track. We will be continuing our efforts in this development, and we will be working with Polyphony Digital to make GT Sophy a permanent part of the game.”

While video games have always had some rudimentary form of AI, the idea behind GT Sophy is to create a racing rival which feels like a human is behind the wheel, adapting to the ever-changing situations in a realistic manner.

Those who raced against Sophy back in February praised the AI and the ways in which it requires you to give you full attention to the race at hand. It will be interesting to see all the ways in which Sophy has evolved once the AI racer is brought back to GT7.

For the past couple years Sony has been taking a renewed approach when it comes to utilising their many current and past Intellectual Properties, with the PlayStation console manufacturer expanding to a transmedia strategy. First starting with the Uncharted movie back in 2022, up until PlayStation Productions’ most recent cinematic release (Gran Turismo), these adaptations have – with one obvious exception – been received both critically and commercially in a somewhat dim light. While a majority of these projects have not quite set the world on fire, I don’t actually think they were meant to.

Of course, all these different films and shows aren’t being made just for the sake of it. Sony has an overarching goal in mind, and that goal is to get non-PlayStation fans to buy a PlayStation; get pre-existing PS5 owners to expand outward and try their many variety of different first-party offerings – and last but also least – get core fans of each IP to double dip on these new shows/films. Sony has crafted this strategy, this formula, and it is working.

The Plan

Gran Turismo (or ‘Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story’ in some regions) is the 4th and latest project to come out of Sony’s PlayStation Productions. Founded in 2019 this new initiative would see popular PlayStation IPs being offered out to a number of different distributors – depending on what platform they deem most appropriate. So far, 9 projects in total have been announced as part of this plan with 4 having now been released, those being:

  • Uncharted – 2022 (Theatrical Release)
  • The Last of Us – 2023 (HBO)
  • Twisted Metal – 2023 (Peacock)
  • Gran Turismo – 2023 (Theatrical Release)

The remaining 5 projects which have been announced – though have had pretty much no details shared – are:

  • Days Gone (Film)
  • Ghost of Tsushima (Film)
  • Gravity Rush (Film)
  • God of War (Amazon)
  • Horizon (Netflix)

Sony have clearly not been choosing to release all their different adaptations through a whole modicum of mediums for no reason. While we could hazard an educated guess as to why each of the different unreleased projects have been selected to premiere on their respective platforms, it makes more sense to look at the projects which have come out and in particular PlayStation Production’s most recent release – Gran Turismo. Before going into all that however, I will briefly touch on the other three projects.

Uncharted

Uncharted made sense as the kick-off for this new venture. Nathan Drake and Uncharted as a whole amassed millions of fans over the course of its two-generation run. While PlayStation doesn’t necessarily have a mascot, Drake’s charming smirk and endless quips were always front and centre when it came to marketing PlayStation as a whole. What’s more, the franchise is pretty much just a reskinned Indiana Jones – a film series which had managed to create an excellent Summer Blockbuster type of feel and formula. Did Uncharted bust the block? Nope, but it was a pretty decent start, especially for being the first release to come out of PlayStation Productions. Even so, the film managed to make over $400 million at the box office during its run, cracking into the top 15 highest grossing films of the year. And again, I don’t think it was meant to make money anyway.

While of course it did make money, I think the purpose of the Uncharted film was to keep current fans of the dormant franchise satisfied during this down period while also introducing new people to the series by proxy of it being a big theatrical release starring Tom Holland. By the time all those new converts will have played through the prior 5 (technically 6) games, a new rebooted Uncharted should be just about coming out of the oven – all prepped and ready to sell millions of copies.

The Last of Us

HBO’s The Last of Us was of course the previously-mentioned exception to the critical reception of PlayStation Productions’ current output. This adaptation clearly had the most direct attention given to it, with Neil Druckmann himself coming back to work personally on the show alongside the multi-award-winning Craig Mazin. And of course, as is in the name itself, the show was released by HBO – undeniably the highest quality and most prestigious TV network there is. What’s more, The Last of Us tells a slow and intimate story, one which requires time and space to allow for the quiet moments to shine through. There was no better choice than HBO and the numbers have proven it. While a critical darling, the show was also huge for HBO, amassing 24 Emmy nominations in total whilst also breaking records with an average of 32 million viewers per episode. None of this is that surprising however; The Last of Us is PlayStation’s golden goose.

Despite having excellent gameplay (especially in Part II), The Last of Us has always been known and appreciated most for its story, and so being able to present this narrative to dozens of millions of new people in a carefully crafted and creator-approved manner helped the story of Ellie and Joel to be experienced by those who will likely never pick up a DualSense controller – and that’s okay!

While undoubtedly a show that any adult can enjoy, HBO’s The Last of Us truly entered the mainstream, seeing mums and dads; older sisters and brothers; your boss at work and countless others who have – and never will – play any video games (outside of maybe owning a Nintendo Wii) get the opportunity to check out this masterpiece. HBO’s The Last of Us truly was a show for everyone, and it succeeded in doing just that while also drawing more eyes than ever to any and all future PlayStation Productions.

Twisted Metal

The next project to launch was the adaptation of Twisted Metal, being distributed by Peacock. While certainly the most low-profile of all the releases so far, the reintroduction to this dead franchise managed to subvert expectations by being a genuinely fun time, despite its partial departure from the source material. Unless you’re a long-time PlayStation fan, you are unlikely to have heard of the name Twisted Metal. Similarly, the brand has no real cache within the mainstream.

With Sony set to soon bring back this franchise in video game form (at least according to leaks and rumours), tying it in with the Peacock show makes a whole lot of sense. No one really knows what Twisted Metal is nowadays, and even those who do are operating on games which for many peaked during the PS2 era. Releasing a TV show first not only brings back the long-dormant IP in a more casual way, but it also helps to give long-time fans of the games an insight into the future of the franchise.

The release of Twisted Metal in this manner served as a low-risk medium reward strategy – and so far it seems to have worked. While early promotional material did not seem to resonate with fans, come the show’s eventual release last month many critics and fans alike ended up having a swell time, calling it “a screen-popping, wickedly funny, seriously twisted and action-jammed adventure that leaves us wanting more”. While not to say that Twisted Metal doesn’t have any fans in this day and age, the success of this new show will undoubtedly lead to many first-timers trying out the next game when it finally releases – perhaps sometime around the show’s second season.

Gran Turismo

Finally, we come to the main event. Gran Turismo is available to watch in cinemas right now, and while the critical consensus was less-than-stellar – with many calling it a glorified PlayStation ad – the audience reception could not be further from this. With a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it is quite clear that those who review films professionally missed the mark with what this film is meant to be. Does it feature a bunch of product placement? Yes, but also, in this context, PlayStation logos being slapped all over the place makes sense. It is based on a true story after all, and so it would be odd and somewhat disingenuous for Sony to omit the placement of PlayStation in the empowering story of Jann Mardenborough and his rise to motorsport racing glory.

All that aside, as with all the prior adaptations, Gran Turismo was developed with a purpose in mind – doing a reversal of the film itself, and getting millions of non-racing fans to get into the genre. I enjoy racing games, though like many, my preference historically has been more tied with the likes of Need for Speed and other arcade-style racers. I never understood (nor did I try to) the controlled chaos required to succeed in a motorsport race. It always seemed as though playing a game like Gran Turismo simply put up too many barriers and limitations, forcing me to take on certain routes and manoeuvres – with any deviances being penalised.

The Gran Turismo film helped me to not only understand why people love the sport (and game series), but to visualise it in a way that ultimately saw me leave the cinema wanting nothing more than to pick up my controller and play a bunch of Gran Turismo 7 – hell, I would have hopped in a car and taken it for a spin if I could drive. But the point I’m trying to make is that the Gran Turismo film made me finally understand what the 80 million+ players who have enjoyed the series over its 25+ year history knew for decades.

This ability by the film to translate the thrill, excitement, tension and ‘controlled chaos’ of a motorsport race can be understood by pretty much anyone. My sister, who can’t even seem to wrap her head around the idea of dual analogue sticks, in seeing the film enjoyed it on its own merits. Polyphony Digital and in particular Kazunori Yamauchi is the brainchild behind the Gran Turismo series from its very inception. While it is of course a franchise designed to sell, Yamauchi himself makes the GT games for the love of cars. The Real Racing Simulator – as it is known – helped showcase and share his love of racing cars with 80 million people. The idea behind the adaptation is to continue this further. Whether or not you end up buying GT7 as a result of this film, the way in which it manages to carefully introduce you to the world of motorsport racing means that as long as you find yourself having a newfound love for the sport, then ‘Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story’ has done its job.

Conclusion

Each new project released under PlayStation Productions has done so with a particular set of goals in mind, and in my opinion all these goals have so far been met. If in watching any of these adaptations, you find yourself not drawn to or interested in them, that’s okay! It just means that the film/show was not for you (and likely wasn’t made for you). That said, in viewing these projects from a distant lens, it’s quite clear that Sony has a plan in mind – and that plan is working.

Back in February, Polyphony Digital teamed up with Sony’s AI branch to introduce a “revolutionary superhuman racing AI racing agent” known as SophyAI. The racer was added to Gran Turismo 7, bringing a new level of challenge for players – though only for a week. Following Sophy’s successful debut, Polyphony looks set to implement the new AI in a permanent manner.

In a video uploaded to YouTube (which has since been privatised) Sony confirmed that they are planning to bring SophyAI to Gran Turismo 7 in a more permanent way, with the video’s description reading as follows:

“So, what's next? We're working with Polyphony to try to bring this to the game in a much larger, permanent sense so that GT Sophy is available to cover a lot of tracks with a lot of cars and available for a much wider range of playing skills.”

While video games have always had some rudimentary form of AI, the idea behind SophyAI is to create a racing rival which feels like a human is behind the wheel, adapting to the ever-changing situations in a realistic manner. Those who raced against Sophy back in February praised the AI and the ways in which it requires you to give you full attention to the race at hand.

While GT7 is known as ‘The Real Racing Simulator’ the addition of SophyAI as a permanent fixture could turn Gran Turismo 7 into the ‘real’ Real Racing Simulator.

Said to be inspired by a true story, reviews for the film have now gone live, revealing that PlayStation Productions’ latest project has unfortunately not resonated with critics.

With a 57% on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes (across 35 reviews), the Gran Turismo film is officially rated ‘Rotten’ with John Nugent of Empire Magazine saying “Despite some warm performances, it’s very hard to ignore the feeling that this is largely just two hours of product placement.”

This sentiment is seemingly shared by a number of critics, with the highest praise being given to the performances – which are seemingly let down by the rest of the film’s formulaic nature.

Metacritic reviews seem to mirror this sentiment, so far managing a 45/100 aggregate score. That said, there is some positivity to be found, with Owen Gleiberman of Variety saying “There’s an innocence to this one, and a surprise authenticity. It’s like a ‘Fast and Furious’ movie made without cynicism, and it gets to you.”

From the very first trailer it was clear that Gran Turismo was not going to be on the same level as HBO’s The Last of Us, but more in line with the likes of 2022’s Uncharted starring Tom Holland. Of course, these are just the critics reviews, and so it will be interesting to see what general audiences think when the film hits cinemas today in the UK (and the 25th of August in the US).

Since its release last year, the team at Polyphony Digital have been diligently updating Gran Turismo 7 with a whole host of new features, cars and modes. As part of the latest patch, GT7 has gotten a number of new vehicles as well as “a Gran Turismo movie experience.”

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, it was revealed that Gran Turismo 7 is being updated to patch 1.36 today, bringing with it “content celebrating the upcoming Gran Turismo movie, GT Café extra menus, 4 exciting new cars, and more.”

Going into specifics, this update (which is live right now) adds the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 ‘18 from the upcoming PlayStation Productions film ‘Gran Turismo’ – which tells the true-life story of a GT player who eventually ended up becoming a real-life race car driver. The vehicle will be redeemable from now until the 28th of September.

Additionally, a new livery has been added recreating the GT-R from the film which can be picked when buying the Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 ’18 in-game.

As with pretty much every patch, 4 new cars have been added into the game, namely:

  • Chevrolet Corvette (C1) ‘58
  • Maserati MC20 ‘20
  • Toyota Ambulance Himedic ’21
  • Toyota GR Corolla MORIZO Edition ‘22

Finally, a number of new Extra Menus have been added to the GT Café alongside a new ‘Fire Station’ Scrape for photo mode. Hopefully Polyphony Digital continues to update GT7 with this cadence.

Late last week Gran Turismo 7 game director and Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi teased that an update would be coming this week. Now, the update has gone live, bringing with it 3 new cars, additional Music Rally tracks and more.

Making the announcement on their blog, the team at Polyphony Digital officially detailed patch 1.35. While not the most content-rich update, there are a few neat additions:

  • Three new cars have been added
    • Aston Martin Valkyrie '21
    • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III GSR '95
    • Subaru Impreza Sedan WRX STi '04
  • The livery for the ‘ANEST IWATA Racing RC F GT3', driven by Igor Omura Fraga in the SUPER GT, has been added
  • Two ‘Extra Menus' have been added to the Café
    • [Extra Menu No. 24] ‘Collection: Subaru WRX' (Collector Level 26 and above)
    • [Extra Menu No. 25] ‘Collection: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution' (Collector Level 30 and above)
  • Monterey' and ‘Field of Flowers' added as featured Curations in Scapes

Last but not least, six new Music Rally events have been included:

  • Good Old Days (Classixx Remix)
  • DRIFT
  • Marechià (With Célia Kameni)
  • Hooked on America
  • Lifeʼs Coming In Slow
  • Moon Over the Castle GT7 version

Again, though not the biggest update in the world, it adds more than enough content to keep players engaged. Hopefully Polyphony Digital continues to update GT7 with this cadence.

More than a year after launch, Gran Turismo 7 continues to see consistent updates and support from the team at Polyphony Digital, with new cars, modes, tracks, optimisations and more. Ahead of the next official update scheduled for this week, the team have teased a number of new additional cars.

Making the announcement on Twitter over the weekend, GT7’s game director and Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi shared an image of some new cars shrouded in darkness, saying (as he always has) “Update is coming next week.”

Once again, eagle-eyed fans such as ‘GTAce’ have already deciphered the image, revealing that the cars set to be coming with this update are as follows:

  • Subaru Impreza WRX STi '04
  • Mitsubishi Lancer EVO III GSR '95
  • Aston Martin Valkyrie '21

It is worth noting that this is likely to be but a small taste of what is to come with the update. Each previous patch has brought with it much more than just a few extra cars, with prior updates introducing a 120hz mode; new tracks; VRR support; additional events and even physics improvements.

With the consistent and continued improvements being added with each update, it will be interesting to see what this upcoming patch brings with it. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Last year it was announced that a film adaptation based on Sony’s long-running and ever popular Gran Turismo racing series was in development. Said to be inspired by a true story, the first official trailer for the film has now been released – alongside the film’s August release date.

Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, “a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver,” the GT film is being directed by Neill Blomkamp of District 9, Chappie and Elysium fame – an interesting choice indeed.

We have seen many films and shows released at this point based on video games. That said, the fact that the GT film tells the story of a Gran Turismo video game player who ultimately ends up becoming a real-life racer does have a lot of potential for unique story-telling moments, especially as the film is actually based on a true story (unlike pretty much every other video game-based adaptation).

The Gran Turismo film launches exclusively in cinemas this August and stars David Harbour; Orlando Bloom; Archie Madekwe; Darren Barnet; Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou.

As has been the case with all previous patches, the game’s director has taken to Twitter to tease the update ahead of time.

Shared by GT7 game director and Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi, another Gran Turismo 7 update is due to be released this week. As with previous teases, the director shared an image of a number of upcoming vehicles shrouded in darkness.

It is worth noting that this is likely to be but a small taste of what is to come with the update. The previous patch – also teased in the exact same manner – ended up bringing with it not just new cars, but a 120fps mode; multiple physics improvements; VRR support; new events, layouts and more.

A few days ago we reported that Gran Turismo 7 is set to get an update some time this week, with the game’s director teasing the addition of 5 new cars. It seems the new vehicles are actually the least exciting part of this update, with the upcoming patch seemingly set to bring with it physics improvements, VRR support and even a 120hz mode.

In what appears to have been a mistake, Polyphony Digital uploaded the patch notes for the upcoming GT7 update ahead of it going live, meaning we are able see exactly what is coming ahead of its official announcement – and it’s a doozy.

In what might just be the biggest patch yet, GT7’s impending update will bring with it a whole host of improvements, changes and additions, including:

  • The previously announced 5 new cars
  • Nurburgring Endurance layouts
  • New events
  • 2 new extra menus
  • A whole host of physics changes
    • Suspension physics
    • Tyre physics
    • Aerodynamics
    • Anti-lag system
    • Car initial settings
    • Controller handing changes
  • Adjusted times for Missions, Licenses and Circuit Experiences to reflect the physics changes
  • 120hz mode
  • VRR (variable refresh rate) support

As it stands, GT7 runs at a smooth 60fps and a native 4K with no dynamic resolution scaling. It is unknown whether this 120hz mode will alter any of the game’s graphics or whether it will simply unlock the frame rate and allow for VRR to smoothen out any frame spikes. Regardless, this update is huge and highly exciting. Hopefully Polyphony Digital officially offers additional details on this update soon.

One year on from its initial launch, Gran Turismo 7 is in an excellent place, with the PlayStation exclusive continually and consistently receiving free updates – most recently seeing uncompromising PSVR2 support as well as experimental inclusions of next-generation racing AI technology. Though perhaps not as expansive, a new update for the game has been teased, bringing with it 5 new cars.

Teasing this upcoming content drop over the weekend, GT7’s director Kazunori Yamauchi took to Twitter to say: “Updates is coming next week” – releasing alongside it an image of 5 cars shrouded in the shadows.

Thanks to eagle-eyed fans however it has been discerned that the 5 vehicles set to be included are:

  • Porsche 959 ‘87
  • Toyota Alphard Elegance ‘18
  • 904 GTS ‘64
  • RS5 Turbo DTM ‘19
  • Mazda3 ‘19

As with each content update, this upcoming patch will likely bring with it much more than just 5 new vehicles, but we will have to wait for the update to arrive before knowing more. Fortunately, that won’t be long, with the patch set to drop some time this week.

GT7 launched in March of last year with over 420 cars. Thanks to subsequent free updates in the year since, the total number of vehicles now rests at 462. While this is still a far cry from the series peak (GT6 with 1,237 cars), Polyphony Digital’s ongoing support for Gran Turismo 7 is highly appreciated.

It is unlikely that the game will ever reach the total roster of its predecessor, but nonetheless GT7 is bringing more fan-favourite cars to the latest and greatest “Real Racing Simulator.”

Video game cheats used to be a highly popular occurrence across games, so much so that entire physical guides were released in the past in order to collate them. The practice is unfortunately no longer commonplace, but that does not mean that new cheats aren’t being discovered. More than 18 years after its initial launch, multiple cheat codes have been found for the PlayStation 2 classic Gran Turismo 4.

As discovered by Gran Turismo enthusiast ‘Nenkai’ the 2004 classic PS2 racer Gran Turismo 4 included a whole host of secretive cheat codes – a first for the series. Though it may have taken nearly two-decades to find, 4 cheat codes in total have been discovered. After 365 days of in-game time has passed, users can input these button combinations for some pretty major skips:

  • 10.000.000 Cr: Select, Left, Right, Right, Down, Up, Up, Left, Down, Up, Right, Left, Down, L1, R1, Select
  • Pass a license: Select, R1, Select, R1, Select, L2, L2, R2, R2, L1, Select, Select
  • Gold a specific license test: Select, Select, R1, R2, L2, L2, Select, L1, R1, Select, R2, L1, Select
  • Gold Any Event (on the event course selection menu): Select, L1, Up, Up, Select, R1, Down, Down, Select, L2, Select, R2, Select

With these cheats, players are able to skip many of the game’s toughest tests, including the 24-hour long endurance race. While these cheats may have been highly useful almost 20 years ago, it is still exciting to see that there exists a number of gaming secrets from decades ago which likely have yet to be discovered.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently announced the Olympic Esports Series 2023, a worldwide virtual and simulated sports competition developed by the IOC in conjunction with International Federations (IFs) and game producers. This year, the event will include nine sports, of which two are JustDance and Gran Turismo.

Professional and amateur players worldwide are invited to participate in qualification rounds across the games featured in the Olympic Esports Series 2023. The competition started yesterday and will culminate in live, in-person finals. The finals will take place in Singapore's Suntec Centre from June 22nd to the 25th and will be aired live on Olympics.com and Olympic social platforms.

Besides Gran Turismo and JustDance, the other sports featured in the competition are:

  • Archery (World Archery Federation, Tic Tac Bow)
  • Baseball (World Baseball Softball Confederation, WBSC eBASEBALL™: POWER PROS)
  • Chess (International Chess Federation, Chess.com)
  • Cycling (UCI, Zwift)
  • Sailing (World Sailing, Virtual Regatta)
  • Taekwondo (World Taekwondo, Virtual Taekwondo)
  • Tennis (International Tennis Federation, Tennis Clash)

Depending on the sport, anyone can try to qualify for the Olympic Esports Series 2023. In Gran Turismo 7's case, the developer will introduce an online time trial on a track dedicated to the competition on April 13th. The best-ranked players will be invited to compete in the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore. On the other hand, in the JustDance category, you'll need an invite to participate.

The IOC's virtual competition format is based on the success of the Olympic Virtual Series. The 2021 competition, which took place before the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, drew over 250,000 competitors from over 100 countries. With the Olympic Esports Series 2023, IOC plans to take another step in the Olympic Movement's support for the growth of virtual sports, as outlined in the Olympic Agenda 2020+5, maintaining its partnership with gaming and esports communities to generate new possibilities for players and fans.

Gran Turismo 7 is getting a huge update today bringing support for PlayStation VR2; adding new cars and more. In a surprising last-minute reveal, Polyphony Digital announced that the update will include Sony’s recently-shown off ‘Sophy’ AI, bringing it into the game and letting you compete against what might be the future of racing games – though only for a limited time.

Late last year Sony, in partnership with Polyphony Digital, announced Sophy: A “revolutionary superhuman racing AI racing agent”. At the time, no release date for the technology was given, with some thinking the tech could be a long ways away from being released to the public. It was therefore a welcome surprise when Polyphony Digital announced that today’s update will include a new mode allowing you to go up against the AI, saying:

“Gran Turismo Sophy Race Together” mode gives Gran Turismo players of all levels and abilities the opportunity to go head-to-head against GT Sophy in GT7. The special mode…is a first look at GT Sophy in GT7 and is designed to maximize the fun and excitement of racing against GT Sophy for everyone. Player feedback on this initial special feature will be used to continually improve the GT Sophy Race Together mode feature for future releases.”

While a welcome surprise for Sophy to already be coming to GT7, it is worth noting that for now, this will be a time-limited feature – available from now until the end of March. Additionally, Sophy is exclusive to PlayStation 5, though this isn’t too unexpected. While video games have always had some rudimentary form of AI, it cannot quite compare to what Sony is attempting here, and so it will be interesting to see how Sophy performs – and whether similar AI is set to be implemented into a bunch of future games.

Recently we reported that Gran Turismo 7 is set to get a VR update come the release of the next generation PlayStation VR2 headset later this month. Ahead of its launch, Polyphony Digital has fully detailed and explained this upcoming update – including the full scope of the game’s VR support.

Taking to their blog, the Polyphony Digital team detailed exactly what fans can expect from GT7 when the free VR update goes live on the 21st of February. We already knew that the VR support would be comprehensive, however the full details have now been shared, with them saying:

“With this free upgrade, players will be able to experience all the races and game modes (excluding ‘2P Split Screen' mode) with a whole new level of realism. PS VR2 players will also be able to access an exclusive ‘VR Showroom' area from their ‘Garage’ or the in-game car dealerships where they can admire all the stunning details of the ultra high-definition car models in a variety of locations and lighting settings.”

Though not unexpected given the specs of the headset, Polyphony Digital confirmed that GT7 will use many of the headset’s unique hardware elements, including its “specially optimised HDR tone mapping, as well as foveated rendering from the eye-tracking feature…and dynamic 3D audio support.”

Finally, the team spoke briefly on this newly revealed VR showroom, explaining that players will be able to “Admire the stunning details of your vehicles in ultra-high definition with 12 selectable backgrounds. Vehicles can be viewed from a variety of angles, and you can even move inside the car with a single button press. Players can enjoy exploring every single car inside and out.”

While not a VR exclusive experience, it is beginning to look as though GT7 may just be one of the most exciting PSVR2 titles and could very well be a system-seller. We will have to wait and see.

Gran Turismo 7 is an impressive PlayStation console exclusive for a number of reasons. Not only is the game rich with content, but it is also a tech showpiece, taking advantage of all the various PS5 hardware and software features. It was previously announced that GT7 would be getting a free PlayStation VR2 update, though details were light at the time. Now, we know that the VR version will in fact be a full and uncompromising experience.

As part of the announcement for the PSVR2’s launch line-up, Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital spoke on what fans can expect from the VR update for GT7, saying: “We're thrilled that Gran Turismo 7 will be a PS VR2 launch title! Through a free upgrade, for those who have already purchased Gran Turismo 7, players will experience all cars and tracks in VR like never before. GT7 in VR takes full advantage of PS VR2's next gen features.”

Going into further detail on what will and will not be playable in VR, Yamauchi continued, “With eye tracking and foveated rendering, players will experience stunning visual fidelity while racing in any of the 450+ cars. While 2-player splitscreen races are not supported in VR, all other races, including online races, will be available. From the Nürburgring to Tsukuba, tracks can be experienced exactly as they are in real life.”

Back with the original PlayStation VR, Sony released a virtual reality mode for the then-latest GT Sport. While a decent mode, it was much more static than the main game, lacking any AI racers while seeing a great deal of other compromises.

It is therefore highly exciting to see that GT7 on PSVR2 will pretty much offer a VR translation of the entire game when the update arrives alongside the PSVR2 on the 22nd of February.

Gran Turismo 7 is an impressive PlayStation console exclusive for a number of reasons. Not only is the game rich with content, but it is also a tech showpiece, taking advantage of all the various PS5 hardware and software features. In an exciting announcement, it has been revealed that come the launch of Sony’s PSVR2 headset in late February Gran Turismo 7 will get a free update to support the next-gen VR headset.

Making the announcement at CES, Sony revealed that the popular and recently released racing simulator Gran Turismo 7 will be getting a free update to support the PlayStation VR2 headset come its launch on the 22nd of February.

While details are currently rather light, from the gameplay shared we already know that this release will be much more fully-featured than previous efforts.

Back with the original PlayStation VR, Sony released a VR mode for the then-latest GT Sport. While a decent mode, it was much more static than the main game, lacking any AI racers while seeing a great deal of other compromises.

Again, while we do not know just how much of GT7 will be playable in VR, it will certainly be more than the previous attempt, with the gameplay shared showing that the VR mode will include dynamic time of day and weather as well as a full set of opponents to race. Hopefully we will hear more about this update closer to the launch of PSVR2.

Sony has been slowly but surely bringing its portfolio of PlayStation games to PC, with The Last of Us Part I and Returnal previously announced to be coming in 2023. Though leaks have in the past claimed otherwise, Gran Turismo 7’s Director has explicitly stated that no PC version is in development.

In an interview conducted by Japanese site Dengeki Online (and translated by GTPlanet member ‘flimmelblitz’), Kazunori Yamauchi, the CEO of Polyphony Digital and game director for Gran Turismo 7 was asked “Some media outlets are reporting that you're researching and even developing a PC version of GT7. Is that true?”

In response, Yamauchi stated ‘That is not correct. I said that, “(as a developer,) there are no options we wouldn't be open to think about”. So, the probability for a PC version may not actually be zero, but if you want to know what we're actually doing [regarding a PC version], the answer is nothing. There's nothing to talk about.’

It is not uncommon for developers to shy away from answering questions surrounding leaks and rumours, and so it is interesting to see Yamauchi explicitly deny that a PC port is in development.

One possible ray of hope remains however, as given the accuracy of the now infamous Nvidia leak (which claimed GT7 would come to PC), it is possible that Yamauchi selected his words carefully, meaning while Polyphony Digital themselves may not be working on a PC release, Sony’s PC porting specialists ‘Nixxes Software’ could be. We will have to wait and see.

23rd of December 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of Gran Turismo, Sony’s premiere racing franchise – pushing PlayStation hardware time and time again with impressive graphics, smooth gameplay and a unique charm. 25 years on from the release of the first Gran Turismo, the series is now celebrating over 90 million total copies sold.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, President of Polyphony Digital and Creator of Gran Turismo Kazunori Yamauchi discussed the history of both himself and the GT franchise, alongside revealing that “In the last 25 years, the cumulative sales total of the series have reached over 90 million copies as of November 16, 2022.”

Taking the time to thank the hundreds of developers both old and new at Polyphony Digital and beyond, Yamauch said: “This result is something that could not be accomplished by ourselves alone. Behind that 90 million figure, there are all the people of the media who conveyed the allure of Gran Turismo to their readers. There are the people of PlayStation who sold GT for us around the world with passion, and there is the incredible amount of support from the retailers who interfaced with our users. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all of them for their support.”

Last but certainly not least, Yamauchi thanked the fans, saying “And above all else, I can’t ever thank enough the GT users and people of the GT community who have played our new titles, which at times could be said to have been very experimental. We are here today because of all the people who supported us.”

Finally, Yamauchi concluded by claiming “I believe the Gran Turismo series have always pursued ‘Beauty’. The beauty of the cars, the beauty of the scenery, the beauty of the lighting, the beauty of driving, the beauty of sounds / music and the beauty of the graphics. The ‘pursuit of beauty’ is the motivation for creating Gran Turismo. We have newfound determination to continue our progress into the future with a strong sense of purpose. We appreciate all of your support over the last 25 years. Thank you”. The full blog post can be found HERE.

Since its release in March of this year, Polyphony Digital has continued to update Gran Turismo 7 with new content, conveniences, and more. Update 1.27 is now live and brings with it nearly half a dozen new cars to race and take photos of.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Ken Chan, the Senior Product Manager at SIE said “December brings five exciting new cars and Scapes – Norway being added.”

To be specific, the list of cars added with this update is as follows:

  1. Ferrari Vision Gran Turismo – “A single-seater concept that pushes the boundaries of the hyper car genre.”
  2. Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm ’20 – “The peak of the Giulia line-up, this model celebrates 110 years of Alfa Romeo.”
  3. Bugatti Chiron ’16 – “The successor to the ultra-high performance Veyron.”
  4. Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray ’20 – “The new generation midship Corvette.”

As mentioned, Norway has also been added into the game’s Scapes mode, letting you take stunning shots of your garage of vehicles in front of the Lofoten archipelago.

In case you missed it, back in November GT7 received a major update which allows you to now sell your vehicles, and included with it multiple new cars and an additional map – to name just a few changes.

The Gran Turismo series has been a staple for PlayStation over the decades. Now with Sony finally bringing its games over to PC, the Gran Turismo team is looking at bringing its iconic racing game to PCs for the first time.

Speaking with GTPlanet, Polyphony CEO, Kazunori Yamauchi, was asked if Gran Turismo would be considered for PC, to which he replied yes, but there are some caveats involved. If Polyphony does go ahead with a PC port, it would help Sony compete with Microsoft's Forza series, which also made the jump to being a multiplatform racing game a few years ago.

In the interview, Yamauchi explains that due to Gran Turismo being a “very finely tuned title”, it could be difficult to bring it over to PC and maintain a high level of optimisation. Whether or not the team wants to put the time into solving those technical challenges still remains to be seen.

If Gran Turismo did make the jump to PC, it could end up being very popular, particularly if it supports a wide range of peripherals, so those with multi-monitor racing sim setups can get the most out of the game.

Gran Turismo 7 launched earlier this year to great fanfare – though the title was admittedly missing some necessary features. One major omission was the ability to sell your cars as a means to purchase others. Fortunately, this (and much more) is now available thanks to GT7’s latest free update.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Ken Chan – the senior product manager at SIE – revealed that the much-requested feature to sell your cars is now finally available in GT7, saying “With the latest 1.26 patch update installed (internet connection required), players would be able to sell cars within their personal garage once the GT Café Menus are completed.”

This should greatly help players with acquiring new cars, as they can now sell an old one in order to partially (or fully) finance the purchasing of another vehicle.

Speaking of new vehicles, this update also adds 3 new cars into the game:

  • BMW M2 Competition ‘18 – “A hard-boiled FR that hides the power of a demon in its compact body.”
  • Ford Sierra RS 500 Cosworth ‘87 – “A Cosworth tuned masterpiece that dominated touring car racing”
  • Nissan Silvia K’s Aero (S14) ‘96 – “The top grade of the S14 adds a rear spoiler and leather wrapped steering wheel”

That is not all, as the update also adds one new track to the game in the form of the ‘Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta Race Circuit’ (Total Length: 4,088m, Elevation Change: 38m, Number of corners: 12, Longest Straight: 1275m). Finally, this update also brings with it two new ‘scapes’ for GT7’s photo mode.

Though the game was not without its controversy at launch, the litany of free updates released so far seem to be directly addressing some of the biggest complaints held by fans, meaning when all is said and done GT7 should hopefully be the best entry in the series yet.

Yesterday we reported on Sony’s announcement that they are working on adapting a number of their popular video game IPs into other mediums. Alongside the announcement of a Horizon show from Netflix and a God of War show from Amazon, Sony also announced a Gran Turismo show. Interestingly it seems as though Sony is betting big on GT, as they are working on both a TV show and a film.

In a new report by Deadline, the website revealed exclusive information on an unannounced Gran Turismo film. According to Deadline, following the success of the Uncharted film (which has grossed over $400 million so far) Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are once again teaming up to adapt a video game IP into film – namely Gran Turismo.

Details are currently rather light, however according to the report, Sony is eyeing director Neill Blomkamp for the project. Blomkamp is known best for directing Sci-fi films including District 9, Elysium and Chappie and so the choice for him to direct a Gran Turismo film is an interesting one.

Very little else is known about this project so far, with the plot reportedly being kept very tight to the chest at the moment. Despite the lack of any plot details, the fact that Sony has selected a director known for Sci-fi films and the announcement of a TV show based on Gran Turismo means that both projects are already in an interesting position.

It’ll be curious to see what both these projects ultimately end up being about, and whether there is a connection or link between the two. We will have to wait and see.

Though we have yet to witness the full fruits of any of its labour, Sony has spent the past few years trying to adapt its many video game IPs into other mediums. In the wake of the Uncharted film’s release to commercial success, Sony is seemingly going all-out with its transmedia deals, officially announcing that they are working on God of War, Horizon and Gran Turismo TV shows.

During Sony Picture’s most recent business briefing, the tech giant announced that three of its most current and popular gaming franchises (God of War, Horizon and Gran Turismo) would be getting their own TV adaptations. Though light on specifics, Sony did confirm that the Horizon show would be produced by Netflix, while God of War is being handed off to Amazon.

It is currently unknown who will be producing the Gran Turismo show – though in all honesty, the concept of a Gran Tursimo show is much less defined when compared to the likes of God of War and Horizon. Will it be a documentary? A fictional show? A Drama? We will have to wait and see.

It is clear that Sony is going all in on this notion of transmedia intellectual properties. Many of Sony’s first party games are story focused affairs and so are ripe for translation into other mediums.

As mentioned, Sony finally managed to complete and release the Uncharted film after years of development hell. Making over $400 million so far however, the film was a clear success. Though Uncharted is currently the only video game property from Sony to see their debut outside of its original medium, the folks at HBO are currently hard at work on a high-budget TV translation of the critically acclaimed The Last of Us.

Additionally, rumours have persisted for years now claiming that a Twisted Metal TV show starring Anthony Mackie is in the works at Peacock. All this is to say that Sony clearly has big plans for all of its intellectual properties.
