As much as this generation of virtual reality hardware is amazing, the one big reminder that we're still not really in the fantastical world around us, is that we're tethered to the real one by cables. Zotac is looking to alleviate that problem with its new VR backpack, which gives you all the power to run a VR headset, while on the move.

To make this possible, Zotac fitted one of its Zbox Mini PCs within the folds of a conventional backpack and fitted it with Nvidia GTX 970, 980 or 980Ti graphics, depending on your prefer. With that attached to your back, all you need do is put on the headset and begin slaying virtual enemies and throwing virtual sticks for virtual robot dogs.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96vtlLnSHG0′]

The hope with this backpack, is that it will provide a stop-gap solution for those wishing for a wireless-feeling VR experience, before the next-generation of hardware perhaps makes that truly possible in a few years' time.

Of course though, this certainly isn't that. Users are still restricted by the scope of their room, and the headset and headphones will still be wired, there just won't be quite as many. There's is however no chance of standing on a cable and you don't need to worry about orientation, which is a bonus, but there will be some restrictions on battery life.

However we don't know how long the Zbox's battery will last just yet, nor do we know when it will release or how much it will cost.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: One other advantage of this, is that it is far easier to take your VR setup to a friend's house. No more lugging a pc, just put the headset, sensors and controller in the backpack too, and get hiking over there.

Despite a few supply issues, the past two weeks have seen the commercial launch of two high-end virtual reality headsets from Oculus VR and HTC/Valve, so understandably there's a lot of buzz about the topic. Part of that buzz is whether you have a system that is capable of powering a VR set up, which requires quite a hefty PC.

We recently ran some tests with Sapphire cards from AMD, to see how capable they were using Steam's VR Performance test and now we're getting the chance to do the same with the green camp. ASUS was kind enough to send through a number of its graphics cards, including a technically sub-part-for-VR, GTX 950. We tested the GTX950 out of interest, we know it falls outside VR recommended specifications. Not everyone can afford a GTX970!

The full list of tested GPUs was as follows:

  • ASUS ROG Matrix Platinum GTX 980TI.
  • ASUS ROG Poseidon Platinum GTX 980.
  • ASUS STRIX GTX 970 DIRECT CU II.
  • ASUS GTX 950.

To see how these fared, we made use of Valve's VR performance test, which runs a scene from the Aperture Robot Repair demo, as if you were using a VR headset.

The system that we used to test each of these cards was made up of the following:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5 4690k @ 3.5GHz.
  • Motherboard: ASUS Z97-K.
  • Memory: 16GB G.Skill RipjawsX 2,133MHz RAM.
  • Storage: 1TB Kingston SSDNOW v310 SSD.
  • PSU: Super Flower SF650 650w (Thanks OCUK).
  • OS: Windows 10.

The graphics drivers installed at the time of testing were the 364.72 WHQL certified version. It's important to note that these drivers were released after the launch of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets, whereas the previous AMD test was pre-release drivers.

Methodology

For this test we utilised the SteamVR Performance benchmark to achieve our scores and to give us an idea of how each card performs in VR conditions. However, due to the way this benchmark operates, it is important that we lay out why the results are not typical of your average graphics card performance test.

Unlike most benchmarks, which aim to achieve as high a score as possible, the first consideration for the Steam VR benchmark, is hitting a consistent frame rate of at least 90 and better yet, slightly higher. To do this, it utilises an adaptive quality setting, which means if a graphics card starts to struggle to maintain a high-FPS, the quality of the scene immediately drops to help rectify frame rate issues.

That said, the benchmark still puts out a score at the end, based on the level of fidelity (graphical quality) maintained throughout the demo and a note to let you know how often the system dropped below 90 frames per second and how often the CPU held things back. There is also a sliding scale of how “VR Ready,” your system is, from not ready, through capable, to “ready” at the green end of the spectrum.

Although most of the cards here (apart from the GTX 950) should have no problem with this benchmark, it should show what benefit you really get from owning a more powerful Nvidia GPU when it comes to virtual reality.

Steam VR Fidelity

GTXVRResults

GTX950-01 GTX970-01 GTX980-01 GTX980Ti-01

GTX 950, 970, 980 and 980Ti respectively

Much like the Sapphire/AMD GPU test we conducted at the end of last month (HERE), these Nvidia cards perform mostly as expected. Since it is a few notches below the recommended GTX 970 minimum for virtual reality, the GTX 950 really struggled. However, what is important to note, is that even though it did have a very low fidelity rating (1.1), it still only dropped below 90 frames per second for 0.1 per cent of the entire demo.

While we wouldn't go so far as to say you should buy a VR headset if all you have is a GTX 950 under the hood, a little overclocking and a powerful CPU might take you far enough to get adequate quality VR working. Just don't expect it to look that great!

In comparison, the other cards performed much more favourably. The GTX 970 put out a solid effort, sitting well into the “Ready” category of Steam's benchmark. A 6.7 fidelity rating is nothing to sniff at and it's clearly a great card to go for if you're wanting to break into virtual reality at this early stage in its life cycle.

Of course the top end cards delivered the best performance, but the GTX 980 Ti was especially impressive. It was powerful enough to never leave the very top quality setting for the demo, giving us a completely straight line result and an 11.1 fidelity rating.

FRAPS

As much as the fidelity rating from the SteamVR benchmark is useful though, it doesn't give us what we're used to seeing with 3D benchmarks: frame rate data. Getting a hold of that right now is rather difficult, as no one else has a good in-game benchmark for VR technology at the time of writing and Futuremark still has yet to release its big VR benchmark.

So to try and augment the above results, we also ran FRAPS during each run (and repeated tests three times for the average) and recorded the frame rates achieved throughout. While we do have to start the FRAPS counter manually at the start of the benchmark and the constantly fluctuating quality levels will skew results, it's the best we are able to do right now.

GTXVRREsults2

While the GTX 980Ti has proved itself an absolute powerhouse here, stealing the show with super-high frame rates despite having the highest quality rating of the bunch, the rest of the results are more as expected. While the quality rating of the visuals goes up with more powerful cards, frame rates stay relatively constant, which is what you want to see from your VR system.

These cards are showing you the best visuals they can, whilst maintaining very strong frame rates.

What's most important to take home from these results though, is that none of the cards ever dipped below 100 frames per second. That provides a solid 10+ frame buffer between the absolute minimum that comfortable, consumer VR demands and shows that all of these cards are pretty VR capable.

Closing thoughts

As much as you might look at the results we managed here today and conclude that the GTX 980Ti is the real choice for serious VR enthusiasts, it isn't the only choice, not by a long shot. The GTX 980 also performed fantastically and the 970 too was very capable and either would be a fine choice for a VR capable rig.

The GTX 950 was the most surprising of the bunch. It may have been restricted to a pretty abysmal quality rating and your games won't look particularly good in VR because of it, but it is at least able to get the job done and maintain decent frame rates. That does mean if you are currently running a system with one of those in, you could conceivably consider buying a VR headset now and upgrading your GPU later.

IMG_5586

In reality, if you are considering the £500 cost of a RIFT, or the even pricier £750+ purchase price of the VIVE, you probably have a VR ready system, or at least enough spare cash that a heftier GPU upgrade would be possible. If money is no object, of course the 980Ti is the obvious choice, but don't forget its cheaper cousins, as they are very VR capable.

Special thanks to ASUS UK for sending us all of these cards.

Look out for more detailed VR reviews and performance coverage as we gain access to new hardware and software in the coming weeks.

KitGuru Says: Nvidia has done a great job of getting its top-end range of cards ready for virtual reality, but the mid-range wasn't neglected which is great to see. Intensively visual VR games are going to be more than the GTX 950 can handle, but it's impressive to see it hold up decent frame rates in this simple test.

When it comes to VR though, we'd really not recommend being ‘cheap'. If you can afford it, aim for a GTX 970 at least as the last thing you want is to end up feeling nauseous in a game, or dealing with substandard image quality. There is little point in stepping into virtual reality if it ends up looking terrible.

Back at CES, MSI impressed us with its new gaming PC known as the Vortex, which uses a similar cylinder shaped design to Apple's 2013 Mac Pro. The Vortex successfully crams a lot of power into a small form factor with a unique thermal design that ensures everything stays cool and quiet.

The Vortex measures in at just ten inches tall and there is a lot to like about this design. Inside of the case are several custom PCBs with enough room for SLI GTX 960s, GTX 970s or even GTX 980s alongside a desktop grade Intel Core i7 6700K, DDR4 RAM and a couple of SSDs.

MSI-Vortex-e1452185739345

MSI-Vortex-View-e1452185810937

The 360° Silent Storm Cooling design is set to offer superior cooling performance as well as low noise, running at just 37 dB under full load and as low as 23 dB at idle speeds, meaning this system won’t be a burden on your ears. On the I/O side you will find four USB 3.1 ports, two HDMI ports, two mini DisplayPort connections as well as USB Type-C and Thunderbolt 3. It really is quite an impressive little machine and really shows how far high-performance CPUs and GPUs have come in terms of how much power is required and how much heat they put out.

The final two available configurations come with an Intel Core i7 6700K, 16GB or 32GB of RAM, Super RAID 256GB SSDs with a 1TB HDD and your choice of either SLi GTX 960s or GTX 980s. The GTX 960 model will cost $2200 while the GTX 980 model will set you back $4000.

KitGuru Says: Packing a high-performance gaming PC with two GPUs into that form factor is a true feat of engineering. Sure the systems are expensive, but there is no denying that they are impressive for sure. Hopefully, we will get the opportunity to play with one at some point!

After its brief stint as a Xbox exclusive title, Rise of the Tomb Raider is officially making its way over to the PC in a couple of weeks time. In order to celebrate, Nvidia will be bundling a free copy of the game with purchases of its GTX 900-series graphics cards, along with gaming notebooks that feature a 900-series mobile GPU.

From today up until the 16th of February, anyone who purchases a Nvidia GTX 970, GTX 980 or GTX 980Ti at participating retailers will be able to redeem a free copy of Rise of the Tomb Raider. The same goes for those who pick up a GTX 970m GTX 980m or GTX 980 powered gaming laptop.

screen018-e1451305101808

Right now we don't know much about the PC version of Rise of the Tomb Raider but given how solid the 2013 port of Tomb Raider was, many gamers have high hopes. Right now there is no word on specific graphical features for the game or GameWorks optimizations.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is currently scheduled to launch on Steam on the 28th of January. Minimum system requirements include an Intel Core i3-2100 or AMD equivalent CPU, 6GB of RAM and a Nvidia GTX 650 or Radeon HD7770 graphics card. We currently don't have any recommended system requirements for those planning to push the settings up.

KitGuru Says: Rise of the Tomb Raider is heading to the PC a bit sooner than some had expected given the Xbox exclusivity deal. How many of you are planning on grabbing the game on PC? Are any of you planning on buying a new GPU soon?

Gigabyte has a new GPU on the block. The company just announced its new GTX 980 Waterforce graphics card, featuring an all in one watercooling unit and unique GPU shroud to help stand out from the crowd. MSI and EVGA both offer similar offerings in the form of their SeaHawk and Hybrid series cards respectively. We have seen Gigabyte experiment with AIO cooled GTX 980s in the past.

All the way back in March, we got to take a look at the original Gigabyte Waterforce, which was a huge tower attachment that housed radiators for three separate GTX 980s, all cooled with AIO units with flex-tubing.

e8ce4c67-3012-4868-a32a-3e353efd1b33

As you can see from the image above, Gigabyte has given its water cooled GTX 980 a bit of a redesign. It features the same tubing and 120mm radiator but it has dropped the blower style fan entirely, so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up temperature wise.

The GTX 980 Waterforce comes with 4GB of GDDR5 memory, as with all of the standard variants of this card. However, it does come with a higher out-of-box overclock, with a base clock of 1228MHz and a boost to 1329MHz.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: At some point, I hope that we will see all AIB partners create AIO cooled variants of high-end GPUs, I imagine quite a few people will appreciate the option, particularly those who aren't experienced with building custom water loops. How many of you water cool your GPU? Do you like the idea of buying an AIO-cooled GPU?

Eurocom has announced something pretty special this week, the ‘Sky X9' gaming notebook, featuring both a desktop processor and a desktop graphics chip. Nvidia recently announced that it has found a way to bring the full desktop GTX 980 GPU to gaming laptops and several companies have already prepared some models. Now, Eurocom has paired that with an Intel Core i7 6700K processor based on the latest Skylake technology, all packed in to a 17-inch laptop.

The GTX 980 found in the Sky X9 gaming notebook features a fully unlocked core, along with 8GB of GDDR5 memory, which will come in handy for higher resolution tasks, like virtual reality- a big focus for Nvidia with its GTX 980 laptop chips.

On the other side of things we have the unlocked Core i7 6700K, which comes clocked at 4GHz by default, though given that this is a K-series chip, you could theoretically push that even further depending on how well the cooling system works.

In terms of a display, you can either get a 1080p or a 4K panel, there is also room for up to four storage drives, a 2.5w subwoofer, a fingerprint scanner, a USB 3.1 port, a Thunderbolt port and two mini display ports. There is no pricing at the moment, though a laptop of this calibre won't come cheap. Either way, this is certainly a machine worth keeping an eye on.

Gaming Notebooks have come a long way over the last few years, they have gotten thinner, lighter and now they are going to come with full-blown desktop-grade GPUs packed inside. Nvidia has today revealed that it has managed to cram a fully spec'd GTX 980 in to gaming notebooks.

geforce-gtx-980-notebooks-premium-components-640px

This is the first desktop GeForce graphics chip in a notebook form factor, bringing massive performance gains to notebook gamers. The GTX 980 comes with 2048 Cuda cores, a base clock of 1128 MHz, a boost clock of 1216 MHz and a memory clock of 7GBPS. All notebook GTX 980 chips are specifically selected in order to avoid any unforeseen issues.

geforce-gtx-980-notebooks-fan-control-640px

Nvidia is even going to be fully supporting overclocking in gaming notebooks featuring the desktop GTX 980, users will also be able to customize their fan curves for better cooling. Nvidia is working with its partners to provide various cooling options as well, so those looking to buy a GTX 980 based laptop will have plenty of choice. These newer cooling solutions will provide two times the efficiency of existing GTX powered notebooks.

geforce-gtx-980-notebooks-max-out-games-640px

Given that this is a full-blown desktop GTX 980, you can expect performance in games to be very good indeed. The above frame rates were taken with all games running at their ‘Ultra' presets running at full 1920×1080 on an MSI GT72. Users have had to make plenty of compromises when it comes to image quality VS frame rate while gaming on past notebooks but it looks like that could all be changing.

Some laptop models that are set to make use of the GTX 980 include: Aorus X7 DT, Clevo P870DM, Clevo P775DM, MSI GT72, MSI GT80 and finally, Asus' recently revealed GX700VO water-cooled laptop. All of those notebooks come with Nvidia G-Sync support, with the exception of the MSI GT80.

KitGuru Says: This really is quite the announcement from Nvidia. Some of these gaming notebooks using the GTX 980 are pretty thin as well, so you can have proper portability coupled with desktop-grade power. How many of you game on a notebook? What do you think of Nvidia bringing desktop GPUs to laptops?

If you have been following KitGuru for a while, then you have probably noticed that we like to keep our readers informed of competitions and giveaways floating around the web. We have a pretty good one to let you know about today as DABS is giving away an Asus STRIX GTX 980 graphics card alongside three of 2015's biggest PC games.

The Asus Strix GTX 980 is one of the first we reviewed back at launch last year. We found it to be excellent during our tests, awarding it a ‘MUST HAVE' award. It is also one of the quietest GTX 980 graphics cards on the market.

DABS Competition

You will probably want some games to test that 980 on as well, so Dabs has thrown in copies of Grand Theft Auto V, The Witcher: Wild Hunt and Batman Arkham Knight.

There are a few rules involved. This contest is only open to UK residents and entrants must be aged 18 or over. You will need to supply Dabs with your name, date of birth and email address in order to enter. The prize draw closes on the 14th of June at 23:59 PM, the winner will then be announced shortly after.

In order to enter, you will need to head over to the competition page, HERE.

Nvidia is looking to sway you in to buying a GeForce GTX 970 or a GTX 980 soon as the two graphics cards will now come bundled with copies of two highly anticipated games: The Witcher 3 and Batman: Arkham Knight.

Both GPUs are already selling very well but with AMD's R9 300 series on the horizon, Nvidia needs to put the pressure on a bit. Both games are supported by Nvidia Game Works technologies, such as PhysX and HBAO+. The Witcher 3 will actually debut Nvidia's own Hair Physics technology to combat AMD's Tress FX solution.

Nvidia Corp.’s code-named GM204 graphics processing unit has once again managed to set a new frequency record for graphics processing units. A well-known overclocker has succeeded in pushing the frequency of the GPU to 2.30GHz clock-rate, but could not eventually replicate the record because of high humidity.

Steponz, a leading overclocker from the U.S., has overclocked his EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card to 2300MHz for the GPU and 8712MHz (2178MHz*4) for GDDR5 memory. The GM204 GPU voltage (VDDC) was increased to whopping 1.212V and the graphics board was cooled down using liquid nitrogen (LN2). When later he tried to push the clock-rate to 2.30GHz, the test system malfunctioned because of high humidity.

“Had 2300/2200, but last three seconds setup went bad,” said Steponz in his comments over at Hwbot.org. “Really bad humidity here today. Going to play tomorrow too. […] If they humidity wasn't so bad, 2300MHz would have been there, just so much water everywhere and in the pot.”

Using his test bed powered by an Intel Core i7-5960X processor clocked at 5.815GHz (also cooled-down using liquid nitrogen), a Gigabyte X99 SOC Champion mainboard and 16GB of 3.10GHz DDR4 memory, Steponz scored 10459 points in 3DMark FireStrike Extreme (using the graphics board functioning at 2.30GHz/8712MHz), which is the world’s new record for a single-GPU setup. He also scored 48193 points in Catzilla 720p benchmark (using the card operating at 2278/8812MHz), the highest result for a single-GPU system ever achieved.

evga_geforce_gtx_980_classified_3

Steponz specifically mentioned that the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB was a “monster card” thanks to massive amount of enhancements designed to improve overclocking potential. Nearly half of a year after the release of the board, overclockers still manage to set new records using this graphics adapter and push the GM204 to its limits.

Gigabyte Technology has started to sell what could be the highest-performing retail graphics processing solution ever developed. The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 WaterForce 3-way SLI includes three massively factory-overclocked graphics cards that are designed to work in multi-GPU mode as well as a special liquid cooling solution. But extreme performance comes at extreme price.

Designed to deliver ultimate framerates in the latest games in ultra-high-definition resolutions, the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 WaterForce 3-way SLI (GV-N980X3WA-4GD) graphics board kit features default GPU clock-rates of 1228MHz/1329MHz (base/boost). Each graphics card sports 4GB of GDDR5 memory at 7GHz, three DisplayPort, one HDMI and two DVI outputs.

gigabyte_3way_sli_watercooling_1

Gigabyte’s three-card graphics product is a unique offering that is designed to provide unbeatable performance at price-points already tested by Nvidia Corp. itself with its GeForce GTX Titan Z. While potentially this three-way multi-GPU graphics kit should offer higher performance than the dual-GPU graphics card, it should be noted that far not all video games scale performance with three GPUs. As a consequence, Gigabyte’s solution will not be the absolutely best graphics sub-system possible in all cases. Still, unlike the GTX Titan Z, the GTX 980 WaterForce 3-way SLI kit features high clock-rates and will offer decent levels of performance even in case only one GPU is active, hence, in general the triple-GPU configuration should deliver high performance in almost all games.

Thanks to closed-loop liquid cooling solution, the kit only produces 30.4db of noise while fully-loaded. The 3-way SLI GeForce GTX 980 graphics processing kit runs 42.6 per cent cooler compared to reference design graphics cards while delivering up to 20 per cent higher performance.

gigabyte_3way_sli_watercooling

According to Gigabyte Technology, the WaterForce cooler is the best cooling solution for three-way SLI GeForce GTX 980 graphics sub-system, which can easily be true since there are no off-the-shelf closed-loop liquid cooling kits for three graphics cards. Each graphics board is pre-installed with its own exclusive waterblock and independent radiator connected with a pair of coolant pipes. All three 120mm radiators are placed inside the external metal watercooling box for maximum efficiency. The box sports three 120mm fans.

gigabyte_3way_sli_watercooling_2

The Gigabyte WaterForce liquid cooler features an intuitive control panel with an OLED display panel, where users can monitor and adjust all the settings about the graphics cards, including temperature, fan speed and pump speed. Moreover, the Gigabyte kit features target temperature mode that automatically adjusts fan and pump speeds to achieve user-defined temperatures.

On Wednesday Overclockers UK and Newegg began to sell/take pre-orders on the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 WaterForce 3-way SLI graphics cards kit at rather whopping price-points. In the U.K. the 3-way kit costs £2499.99 including VAT, whereas in the U.S. the 3-way graphics sub-system is priced at whopping $2999.99.

The GTX 980 WaterForce 3-way SLI kit (GV-N980X3WA-4GD) will eventually be available in Taiwan, Australia, China, France, Germany, Japan, Korea and Russia beginning this month.

KitGuru Says: While the monstrous GTX 980 WaterForce 3-way SLI kit is designed to deliver ultimate gaming performance for hardcore gamers, it comes at a price that by far exceeds the cost of three GeForce GTX 980 graphics adapters. In fact, the three-way liquid cooling solution costs rather whopping $1350/£1300, an extreme price for a cooler.

The world’s record GPU frequency of 2.20GHz was set on Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics cards made by Asustek and EVGA. While it is hard to believe that the GM204 GPU can be pushed further towards 2.30GHz – 2.40GHz, the new Asus ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce GTX 980 graphics card is designed to do just that.

Asustek Computer on Wednesday unveiled its new graphics card that has all chances to become one of the best graphics cards for overclocking ever produced. The Matrix GTX 980 boasts not only a powerful DirectCU II cooling system (featuring two fans and five heat-pipes) and custom design of printed-circuit board, but it features extremely sophisticated 14-phase voltage regulator module (VRM) that can do magic things for overclocking as well as some other technologies for those, who want to push the graphics card to the extremes.

asus_rog_matrix_platinum_geforce_gtx_980_exploded

The digital 14-phase VRM is based on concrete-core chokes, solid-state black metallic capacitors and hardened MOSFETs. The board features two 8-pin PCIe auxiliary power connectors that can deliver up to 300W of power to the graphics board (in addition to 75W supplied through PCIe x16 slot) and one 4-pin Molex connector for memory defroster power loop. When cooled to sub-zero temperatures during extreme overclocking, the memory defroster keeps the memory chips just above freezing, preventing cold bugs from hindering overclocking.

The Asus ROG Matrix Platinum GeForce GTX 980 4GB will be the most powerful Nvidia GM204-based graphics card in Asustek’s lineup. The graphics processor of the monster graphics adapter is rated to run at up to 1342MHz out-of-the-box, a significant increase from 1216MHz recommended by Nvidia.

The ROG Matrix Platinum GTX 980 is the fourth GeForce GTX 980 graphics card in Asus’ family. The company carries a reference GeForce GTX 980, Strix GTX 980 with DirectCU II cooler and Poseidon GTX 980 featuring a hybrid cooling solution that use similar PCBs with 10-phase VRMs as well as the new ROG Matrix Platinum GTX 980 card that sports a brand-new printed-circuit board with 14-phase VRM as well as DirectCU II cooling system.

asus_rog_matrix_platinum_geforce_gtx_980_box_1

The current 2.20GHz GPU clock-rate records were set by professional overclockers using Asus Strix GTX 980 and EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 graphics cards that were cooled by liquid nitrogen cooling.

The Strix GTX 980 sports custom design of printed-circuit board with 10-phase digital VRM, the same one is used by Asus Poseidon GTX 980 graphics card, which has proven to be among the best in the industry. EVGA’s GTX 980 Classified sports custom PCB with 14-phase VRM, its voltages can be controlled using a special device. It will be very interesting to see whether Asustek’s engineers have managed to create a better voltage-regulating module than developers from EVGA and whether such VRM actually enables better overclocking. Will the record of 2.20GHz/9GHz (GPU/memory) stand or fall?

Asus Republic of Gamers has announced that it will be launching the Poseidon GTX 980 graphics card, featuring the DirectCU H2O cooler, which uses a hybrid solution for efficient cooling on air or water. According to the company's own tests, the Poseidon GTX 980 will run up to 27 degrees cooler than the reference 980, which we rated highly back in September.

Given the efficiency of custom water cooling, Poseidon owners should see performance gains as Nvidia's GPU Boost technology will automatically raise clock rates if the thermal headroom is there. Additionally, you could always run your own overclock for better results, the Maxwell architecture has proven extremely capable of hitting high frequencies.

poseidon-gtx-980

The cooler works by using a vapor chamber, which is in direct contact with the GPU core for faster heat dispersal, white copper heat pipes and extended cooling fins will then transfer the heat away from the card. For water cooling, the card uses standard quarter inch threaded fittings, allowing buyers to instantly hook this card up to a custom loop without needing to buy and fit a radiator.

This card also uses black metallic solid-state capacitors, 10-phase Super Alloy Power concrete-core chokes and hardened MOSFETs, which should all be able to withstand greater stress and higher temperatures due to the application of specially-formulated materials.

The exclusive Digi+ VRM also regulates voltages digitally, allowing for experimental performance tuning while overclocking.

The Asus ROG Poseidon GTX 980 will begin shipping worldwide later this month. Pricing has yet to be confirmed.

The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card is among the highest-performing GM204-based graphics adapters available today. The adapter is based on a custom-designed printed circuit board with enhanced PLL circuitry, improved GPU power plane as well as ability to control voltages using Evbot accessory sold by EVGA to provide maximum overclocking potential. The GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 sports two 8-pin PCI Express auxiliary power connectors as well as the company’s own ACX 2.0 cooling system.

Thanks to major enhancements of PCB design, the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified can not only enable great GPU overclocking results, but also has the ability to run memory at sky-high frequencies. No one has ever overclocked GDDR5 memory interface to 9GHz, but it looks like Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido has managed to break this record as well.

KitGuru Says: It looks like 2.20GHz is the limit for currently available GM204 graphics processing units since nobody has so far managed to overclock the GPU to a higher frequency. 2.20GHz is still unbelievable clock-rate for a GPU that contains 5.2 billion of transistors and 2048 stream processors. The graphics chip also seems to have an excellent memory controller (probably, the best in the industry at the moment) which can operate at whopping 9Gbps data-rate. It will be interesting to see whether it will be possible to overclock GDDR5 further on GM204-based graphics cards.

Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido, one of the world’s most renowned overclockers who collaborates with EVGA these days, has set a number of world’s records when it comes to GPU frequency. He was the first to overclock a graphics processor to 2GHz and was among the first to hit 2.20GHz with Nvidia's latest GeForce GTX 980 GPU. This week K|NGP|N did not set any clock-speed records, he broke 3DMark FireStrike records instead using four GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards with 2 GHz GPUs.

Using four EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics cards overclocked to 2.0GHz/8400MHz (GPU/memory) and cooled-down using liquid nitrogen (LN2) as well as a test-bed equipped with an Intel Core i7-5960X processor clocked at 5.6GHz, an EVGA X99 mainboard and 16GB of 3.30GHz DDR4 memory, Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido managed to set three absolute world records in 3DMark FireStrike benchmark:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike (4-way) = 40,338
  • 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme (4-way) = 28,059
  • 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra (4-way) = 16,243

evga_kingpin_geforce_gtx_980_frozen_quad_980

Thanks to massive overclocking potential of EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card, K|NGP|N has also managed to see three records in single-GPU mode using a GeForce GTX 980 graphics card operating at 2.1GHz/8800MHz (GPU/memory):

  • 3DMark Fire Strike (single card) = 19,811
  • 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme (single card) = 9,617
  • 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra (single card) = 5,007

The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card is among the highest-performing GM204-based graphics adapters on the market. The board features 1291MHz/1405MHz (base/boost) GPU clock-rate, a significant increase from 1126MHz/1216MHz frequencies on reference-design GeForce GTX 980 graphics boards.

evga_kingpin_geforce_firestrike_-_4way  evga_kingpin_geforce_gtx_firestrike_-_single

To ensure maximum overclocking potential, the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 uses a large custom PCB with enhanced PLL circuitry, improved GPU power plane as well as ability to control voltages using Evbot accessory sold by the company. The GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 sports two 8-pin PCI Express auxiliary power connectors as well as the company’s own ACX 2.0 cooling system.

“The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified is an overclockers dream,” said Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido. “The improved VRM and memory design really let Nvidia’s GTX 980 GPU stretch its wings. This card has achieved clock-speeds of 2200MHz core and 8500MHz memory single card and nearly 2100MHz core in 4-way SLI, it’s really amazing.”

Asustek Computer is working on what could eventually become one of the highest-performing GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards on the planet. The forthcoming Asus Poseidon GTX 980 will feature a hybrid cooling system and proprietary design of printed-circuit board to enable unprecedented overclocking potential.

The Asus ROG Poseidon GTX 980 features a cooling system that features a custom copper waterblock (that is in direct contact with the GPU), which allows plugging tubes (using standard G¼-inch threaded fittings) from custom liquid-cooling systems, as well as a massive aluminium radiator with ultra-thin fins with heat-pipes. According to Asustek, with water-cooling, ROG Poseidon GTX 980 achieves up to 27°C-lower running temperatures than reference designs. With air-cooling, ROG Poseidon GTX 980 is also significantly cooler than graphics cards, which use Nvidia’s reference cooling systems.

asus_rog_poseidon_geforce_gtx_980

The unique graphics card from Asustek is based on custom printed-circuit board featuring 10-phase Digi+ voltage-regulation module (VRM) with solid-state black metallic capacitors, concrete-core chokes and hardened MOSFETs. Thanks to digital VRM, there is an ample room for experimental performance tuning – to levels unmatched by graphics cards based on Nvidia’s reference design. Thanks to that and advanced cooling solution, Asustek’s ROG Poseidon GTX 980 promises to be an excellent overclocker.

Elsa's GTX 980 S.A.C is likely going to be a Japan only release, at least for now. The company has been around since 2003 but hasn't been consistently releasing GPUs every time there is a series update. The most recent release I can find from them is a GTX 680 from 2012.

elsa_gtx_980_sac

The S.A.C cooler will supposedly offer silent air cooling and should be easy to clean as the shroud is suspended by two thumb screws. allowing it to easily be pulled off to remove dust. The new custom GTX 980 doesn't have an exact release date just yet or a price tag but it will likely remain exclusive for Japan for a while so reviews may be hard to come by.

Update: ELSA Technology was originally a German manufacturer. However, in 2002 the company filed for bankruptcy, the ELSA featured in this article was founded in 2003, shortly after the original went bust.

Nvidia Corp.’s recently unveiled GM204 graphics processing unit and GeForce GTX 980 graphics card have proven to be excellent performers and also great overclockers. This week an enthusiast from Sweden managed to boost clock-rate of the GeForce GTX 980 graphics processing unit to whopping 2.20GHz, a new world’s record.

Elmor, an overclocker from SweClockers.com team, has managed to increase GPU clock-rate of Asus GeForce GTX 980 Direct CU II graphics card by 81.58 per cent from default, to 2208MHz. He also managed to increase effective GDDR5 memory frequency to 8392MHz, a 19.27 per cent boost. To achieve his remarkable overclocking result, Elmor used liquid nitrogen cooling. The core voltage of the GM204 GPU was 1.2120V.

Using a system based on Intel Core i7-5960X clocked at 5586MHz (also cooled by LN2), Elmor managed to score 9568 in 3DMark FireStrike Extreme, another world’s record, reports Hwbot.

Earlier this year Nvidia Corp.’s GK110 graphics processing unit has managed to conquer 2.0GHz frequency, setting the world’s record. The GM204 graphics chip is smaller than the GK110 and contains fewer transistors, therefore, it is not surprising that it can work at even higher frequencies. Moreover, thanks to increased efficiency of Nvidia’s Maxwell architecture, the GM204 can actually be faster than the GK110 in benchmarks when overclocked.

EVGA this week quietly introduced what could be the world’s highest-performing graphics card based on Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX 980 graphics processing unit. The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 graphics board utilizes custom printed-circuit board (PCB) that is designed with overclocking in mind.

The EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 4GB graphics card features 1291MHz/1405MHz (base/boost) GPU clock-rates, a significant increase from 1126MHz/1216MHz frequencies on reference-design GeForce GTX 980 graphics boards. To ensure further overclocking potential, the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 sports two 8-pin PCI Express auxiliary power connectors (Nvidia-designed GeForce GTX 980 boards feature two 6-pin PCIe power connectors) as well as the company’s own ACX 2.0 cooling system.

evga_geforce_gtx_980_classified_1

Like previous-generation Classified-series graphics cards, the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 uses a large custom PCB with enhanced PLL circuitry, improved GPU power plane as well as ability to control voltages using Evbot accessory sold by the company. All of the enhancements are designed to provide further overclocking potential for those, who need maximum performance.

It is possible that eventually EVGA releases EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified K|NGP|N Edition that will likely feature three aux PCIe power connectors (2*8-pin connectors and a 6-pin connector), preinstalled dedicated PWM baseplate as well as even higher clock-rates and overclocking potential.

evga_geforce_gtx_980_classified_2

Earlier this week KitGuru published a review of the Asus GTX 980 Strix OC graphics card. During the testing, the adapter was overclocked to whopping 1380MHz/1481MHz base/boost using air cooling. At such high frequencies the graphics solution almost hit 21,000 points in the graphics test of 3DMark 11 – KitGuru’s highest yet for a single GPU.

Given the enhanced design of the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0, it is highly likely that it will not only beat Asustek’s solution in terms of overclocking potential, but will even beat Nvidia’s GeForce GTX Titan Black in terms of performance in games.

evga_geforce_gtx_980_classified_3

Pricing of the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Classified ACX 2.0 has not been announced yet, but do not expect it to be low.

KitGuru Says: It is noteworthy that Nvidia’s partners decided to offer heavily-overclocked versions of its GeForce GTX 980 early in the life cycle and not to wait for 8GB versions of the boards to arrive. If you use a 4K display, it makes sense to wait for factory-overclocked Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 graphics cards with 8GB of memory. It is unclear whether such boards could further boost memory frequency, but the amount of memory itself should help to play comfortably in high resolutions.
