Each week, Epic gives away a game or two for free to all those with an Epic Games account. Kicking off 2024’s free games promotion is Eidos Montreal’s well-received (though underrated) Guardians of the Galaxy.

Available to add to your library right now (and will remain so until the 11th of January at 4PM UK time), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a 3rd person action-adventure game which sees you play as the group’s leader Peter Quill – aka Star-Lord – alongside your companions.

Focused on offering a choice-based narrative, 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy was met with a great deal of praise upon its initial release. Unfortunately, due to the sour taste left in people’s mouths by Square Enix’s Avengers game, Guardians of the Galaxy underperformed at launch.

That said, it being given away for free via the Epic Games Store will hopefully offer a new lease on life for the game.

If a AAA Marvel release isn’t your cup of tea, next week’s free Epic Games Store title will be ‘Sail Forth’ – an exploration-focused indie title which has you “Sail a fleet of customizable ships across an ocean whose ancient depths have swallowed the key to the mysterious past.”

For nearly two decades now TT Games has made a name for itself thanks to the team’s work on the LEGO games franchise – having developed dozens over the years. Despite the success of their most recent title (LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga) a new report has revealed that in an unfortunate state of circumstances, 4 of the studio’s in-development projects have now been cancelled – including a Guardians of the Galaxy game.

As reported by NintendoLife, TT Games have had 4 of their projects cancelled. ‘Project Marley’ was said to be a Disney Infinity-styled experience in that players would be able to explore multiple Disney worlds and play as a whole host of characters ranging from a bunch of Disney IP including but not limited to Jungle Book, Nightmare Before Christmas, Pirates of the Caribbean, Maleficent, Muppets, Frozen, Toy Story and Winnie the Pooh. Project Marley was in development for 4 years.

Unfortunately, TT Games’ biggest ongoing project was not the only one to get canned, as 3 more titles have reportedly now been cancelled. ‘Project Cosmic’ was said to be a LEGO game based on the popular Guardians of the Galaxy franchise which had been in the works for 18 months prior to its cancellation.

‘Project Rainbow Road’ was reportedly a non-LEGO branded shooter which would feature a whole host of Warner Bros. IP including DC, Rick and Morty, Looney Tunes as well as Netflix’s Stranger Things. Finally, ‘Project LEGO X’ was said to be a mobile port of the popular LEGO Worlds game – though this too has now been cancelled.

With so many projects falling to the wayside, hopefully TT Games are able to get their groove back – especially as the team are undeniably talented.

Despite a positive reception at launch, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy ‘undershot' sales expectations. Things have been improving this year though, thanks to continued sales and more recently, the game's inclusion to the Xbox Game Pass library.

Square Enix confirmed that the game didn't meet sales expectations earlier this year, although the publisher hoped that continued promotions would help the game's sales long-term. In March, the game was added to the Xbox Game Pass library for both consoles and PC, a deal that reportedly cost Microsoft around $10 million.

This week in an interview with Eurogamer, Guardians of the galaxy narrative director, Mary DeMarle, explained that Game Pass has meant that the game has begun finding a wider audience, and the developers at Eidos Montreal have enjoyed seeing new players coming in. Creative director, Jean-Francois Dugas, added that the game's slow sales start could be down to the fact that Guardians isn't a huge IP in the video game space.

“I have no regrets. We did everything we could but that’s the reality of the market… And let’s not forget it’s a new IP. Even though we say all ‘Guardians are known’, it’s still a new IP. It could be a lot of people don’t even know that the game is out yet, or they’re not sure exactly what it is.”

Six months on from launch, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy came to Xbox Game Pass for PC and console in March. We are often left wondering just how much money Microsoft spends licensing some of these bigger titles. According to one analyst, it seems Microsoft has paid Square Enix somewhere between $5 million and $10 million USD.

According to MST Financial senior analyst, David Gibson, Microsoft paid Square Enix around $5 to $10 million to get Guardians of the Galaxy on Xbox Game Pass. The figure is based on “discussions with Square Enix and others”, so it is an educated guess, but the true number could be a little different.

Microsoft doesn't reveal much about the inner workings of Xbox Game Pass, the licensing deals or the fees it generally pays out. However, many developers from studios big and small have praised the service for increasing engagement and boosting sales for the game across platforms.

Guardians of the Galaxy first released back in October 2021 and while the title received generally positive reviews, it did not go on to become the major sales success that Square Enix hoped for. Now, the publisher is looking to extend the game's tail, and increased exposure through Xbox Game Pass should help achieve that.

KitGuru Says: $10 million for Guardians of the Galaxy seems a bit low, although it is important to note that we don't know how long the game is going to be on Game Pass. $10 million for a quarter (3 months) of Game Pass is quite different to $10 million for a full year.

We've officially made it through to March and right on time, Microsoft has revealed the next batch of games coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC, consoles and cloud. In a surprise move, we have a pretty major headliner for this month – Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is the second Marvel title published by Square Enix. Unlike The Avengers, Guardians is a single-player adventure, and was well received by critics at release last year. The game's launch sales did disappoint Square Enix, although that isn't an uncommon trend for the company's western titles. If you didn't pick up the game at release but have been meaning to give it a shot, then March is the perfect time, as the game will be landing on Xbox Game Pass for PC, console and cloud.

Here is the full list of Xbox Game Pass titles arriving over the next couple of weeks, complete with dates:

March 1st

  • Far: Changing Tides (PC, console and cloud)
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator (Cloud)

Match 3rd

  • Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns (console and PC)

March 10th

  • Kentucky Route Zero (PC, console and cloud)
  • Lawn Mowing Simulator (PC and console)
  • Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (PC, console and cloud)
  • Young Souls (PC, console and cloud)

Unfortunately, there is also a set of games leaving Xbox Game Pass on the 15th of March:

  • Nier: Automata (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Phogs! (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Torchlight III (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • The Surge 2 (Cloud, Console, and PC)

This is just the first half of the month, so expect another Xbox Game Pass update in a couple of weeks to cover the second half of March. As of today, the Xbox Game Pass app on PC is also getting a big update, allowing users to access files for installed games, the ability to repair installs or move games between drives, mod support for more titles and the option to choose your game install folder.

Square Enix is an interesting company. Consisting of both Japanese and Western studios, the latter’s games have historically been seen as under-delivering when compared to the expectations of the publisher. Such is the case with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which according to Square, “undershot our initial expectations.”

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy launched back in October 2021 to positive reviews from both critics and fans alike, even going to win a small number of Game of the Year awards from some media outlets. Despite this, the game’s sales seemingly did not impress, with Yosuke Matsuda saying:

“The HD Games sub-segment launched ‘Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy’ in Q3. Despite strong reviews, the game's sales on launch undershot our initial expectations.”

Matsuda’s comments on the game does however then shift into a more positive light, with him claiming that “sales initiatives that we kicked off in November 2021 and continued into the new year have resulted in sales growth, and we intend to work to continue to expand sales to make up for the title's slow start.”

Square Enix has historically had high expectations for all of its games, and as such,  many of the titles unfortunately end up selling less than the publisher expects – even if sales were relatively good. While Square Enix’s mentality seemingly remains the same, it is encouraging to see Guardians breaking this cycle of disappointment, and shooting to success – albeit slowly.

One of the biggest features advertised with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is the fact that they are able to take advantage of hardware accelerated ray-tracing, offering highly realistic shadows, lighting and reflections. Not every game has taken advantage of this feature, however Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has now retroactively gone back to the recently-released game and added ray-tracing – but not on the Series S.

Square Enix’s Guardians of the Galaxy launched in late October for all currently available consoles – including the Nintendo Switch (though through a cloud version). At launch, the game offered different graphics modes on the current-gen systems – namely PS5 and Xbox Series X. On these devices, players could choose between a 4K and 30fps output, or 1080p at 60fps. At the time, the PC version launched with an exclusive feature: ray-tracing.

Developers Eidos Montreal later confirmed that the PS5 and Xbox Series X would be seeing a ray-tracing mode via  software update. This is update is live, and video game tech analysts Digital Foundry have now tested the new patch – revealing some good and not so good news.

On the PS5 and Xbox Series X, this ray-tracing mode is added as a third option. This means that now, players can choose between a native 4K at 30fps mode, a dynamic 4K with ray-tracing at 30fps, or a 1080p image at 60fps without ray-tracing. Across both the PS5 and Series X the new ray-tracing mode adds a great deal of realism to the game, while offering very few compromises.

According to Digital Foundry, the ray-tracing mode’s dynamic 4K ranges from a native 3840x2160p to a low of 2880x1620p. This drop in resolution in many instances is deemed more than worth it for the addition of ray-tracing – especially as performance-wise, both the Series X and PS5 are able to maintain a solid 30fps.

Unfortunately, the Xbox Series S did not see such treatment. That being said, this latest patch did offer an unlocked frame rate mode for the Series S, allowing the typically 1080p 30fps game to run up to 60fps – though this is rare. Still, the addition of an unlocked frame rate mode provides more options for Series S players, even if the result is inconsistent.

As we enter each new generation, we are seeing more and more long-term support for games, representing a positive move for an industry which at one point would charge full price for a modest resolution bump for new systems. Hopefully this kind of support continues throughout the generation.

The post Guardians of the Galaxy PC Performance Benchmark, RT + DLSS first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy hit shelves earlier this week and we've been hard at work to bring you this extensive performance analysis. If you want to know exactly how well this game performs, we've tested over 25 graphics cards across three resolutions to answer that exact question, with a look at the game's ray tracing and DLSS features also included.

Eidos Montreal is the team behind Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, with the developer opting to use its Dawn engine for this title – the same engine that powered Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. It's a DX12-only title, with a choice of five different graphical presets. We did all of our benchmarks using the Ultra preset, but we take a look at preset scaling in the video.

Somewhat frustratingly, the game's display setting menu is home to a refresh rate slider that only goes up to 144Hz. It seems that the refresh rate set here also acts as a framerate limiter in game, so it’s not possible to get more than 144FPS. Based on my testing with ultra settings, that’s only going to be an issue if you’re using an RTX 3090 or RX 6900 XT at 1080p, which is somewhat of a waste, but I still don’t like to see a frame rate cap at all and would hope Eidos Montreal can remove this in a future patch.

Driver Notes

  • AMD GPUs were benchmarked with the 21.10.2 driver.
  • Nvidia GPUs were benchmarked with the 496.49 driver

We didn’t end up using AMD's latest ‘game ready' 21.10.3 driver during our testing, instead we opted for 21.10.2. The simple reason for this is because, using the 21.10.3 driver, shadows are very glitchy in the game – they seem to pop out as you move over or next to them and it’s very distracting (as shown in the video). Reverting back to 21.10.2 completely removes this issue so I’m not sure what has happened there, but right now we think it’s really the only way to play the game, as the glitchy shadows is a noticeable and immersion-breaking issue.

Built-in Benchmark vs Gameplay

Before getting to the benchmark data for every single GPU, it's worth noting that we didn't use the game's built-in benchmark for our testing today. As you can see above, the built-in bench delivers frame rates up to 38% higher than what we saw while actually playing the game. Instead, for this analysis we benchmarked a section from the game’s first chapter, delivering data that was much more representative of what I saw over the two hours or-so that I played the game.

1080p Benchmarks

1440p Benchmarks

2160p (4K) Benchmarks

Preset Scaling

We benchmarked the ultra preset on every single GPU we tested – but how much performance can you gain by dropping down a preset or two? The answer is barely anything – even going from the ultra preset to the low preset resulted in a difference of less than 7FPS. This is pretty shocking in my view, and yes I did try this with various GPUs but the scaling was consistent across the board.

I think this is a consequence of only having a handful of meaningful image quality settings – comparing the visuals of ultra settings vs low doesn’t show much difference at all, as you can see in the video. It does mean those with lower-end GPUs may struggle even on low settings however, so I really would’ve liked to see more work done to improve scalability.

VRAM Allocation

VRAM allocation isn't too high for a modern title. 1080p ultra saw our RTX 3090 allocate almost 4.5GB VRAM, which could explain why the 4GB GPUs we tested all suffered somewhat at 1080p, but 5GB VRAM at 1440p isn't so bad. This does increase to around 6.5GB at 4K, while ray tracing of course increases VRAM requirements by a significant amount at every resolution.

Closing Thoughts

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a great-looking game with a fantastic art style. It's not without its fair share of issues though. The essentially non-existent performance scaling is definitely among those and one I hope can be fixed with a future update, as is the annoying 144FPS cap that is imposed for seemingly no reason. I did notice a couple of random bugs during my play-through, including the Star-Lord logo just hanging in mid-air, while AMD’s latest driver actually breaks shadows in the game.

Despite those issues, I've been pretty impressed with the overall frame rates and stability of the engine. I didn't notice any stuttering during my time in the game, and while AMD's GPUs do tend to have slightly more erratic frame times and 1% lows, they still perform well – even on the older 21.10.2 driver.

We can see Nvidia's Ampere GPUs taking the upper hand though, with the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 leading the pack across every resolution tested. The RX 5700 XT is particularly poor performer, coming in closer to the RTX 2060 than the RTX 2070 Super, but again we hope a proper game ready driver – that actually works – can help restore some performance there.

The one caveat in terms of performance is around 4GB GPUs. When testing 1080p ultra settings with an RTX 3090, we saw nearly 4.5GB VRAM allocated and that could explain why the 4GB cards we tested all struggled to hit even 30FPS. The 4GB 5500 XT is significantly slower than its 8GB counterpart for instance, so do be wary.

That said, the game's official recommended specs tout the GTX 1060 6GB as minimum though, and at 1080p ultra settings that card delivered 40FPS on average, so you don't need a beast of a GPU to get a playable frame rate. Particularly low-end cards however, with less VRAM, may struggle.

On the whole, I had a great time playing this game and will definitely be finishing it off this weekend. There are some bugs and issues that need to be ironed out, but considering the visual quality on show, I am pretty happy with what Guardians of the Galaxy can offer.

Update 29/10/21: Shortly after publishing this article, AMD released the Adrenalin 21.10.4 driver, specifically addressing the lighting/shadow issues we pointed out with the 21.10.3 driver. This should help improve performance on AMD GPUs. You can download 21.10.4 HERE.

When Sony first announced the PS5 and its tech specs, one of the console’s biggest selling points was that of the SSD, which alongside allowing for virtually no loading times, also benefited from its Kraken compression technology. This seems to have paid off, as on PS5, Guardians of the Galaxy is 60% smaller in file size when compared to PC.

Ahead of the release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game on the 26th of October, the game’s file sizes were revealed. While the game comes in at a rather expected 80GB on PC – an average size for a next-gen game – the PS5’s version comes in at only 31.132GB.

While impressive in its own right, what is perhaps ever wilder is the fact that the PS4 version – which undoubtedly comes with lower resolution textures and more – takes up 60GB, meaning that the technically superior version takes up less space.

Until the PS5, each generation saw games increase in size, with the PS4 Pro / Xbox One X era seeing massive ballooning of video game sizes. For the first time ever though, the new generation has seen a decrease in game file sizes – at least on PS5. This is thanks to the ultra fast SSD in the PS5, and the console’s Kraken compression-decompression technology, allowing for fewer duplicated assets.

Despite having a smaller SSD than the Xbox Series X, it seems this technology has allowed for Sony’s system to actually offer more real storage space. Hopefully the next generation Xbox, PCs and more all adopt a similar technology, as it is not only good for the user, but good for the environment.

Earlier this week, the minimum and recommended PC system requirements for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy were revealed. The biggest surprise was the apparent need for 150GB of free storage space to install the game, which is even more space than last year's Marvel's Avengers. As it turns out though, the game won't actually be as big as first claimed.

In an update on Twitter last night, the developers confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy will not take up 150GB of storage space. Currently, the team is in “the last stages of optimising the final game” and has confirmed that the game will actually take up approximately 80GB of storage space instead. That could grow with DLCs or expansions down the line, but for now at least, the game shouldn't take up more than 80GB on your hard drive or SSD.

The full minimum system requirements include:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit (1803 or newer)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-4460
  • Memory: 8GB RAM
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 570

The recommended system requirements include:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit (1803 or newer)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i7-4790
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super or AMD Radeon RX 590

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is developed by Eidos Montreal and is set to be a single-player action-adventure. The game launches on the 26th of October for Xbox and PlayStation consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Marvel's Avengers may not have been the hit Square Enix was hoping for but the publisher is ready to take another swing at the Marvel universe later this month with Guardians of the Galaxy. The game is set to release next week, and judging by the newly released PC system requirements, it's going to be a pretty big game.

While Marvel's Avengers calls for up to 110GB of storage space, Guardians of the Galaxy will require even more storage space. The game's minimum and recommended system requirements both call for at least 150GB of available space.

The full minimum system requirements include:

It's the first Thursday of October, which means it is time for another major GeForce Now library update. This month will see both Far Cry 6 and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy joining the cloud streaming library, alongside 21 other titles.

There will be 23 games in total coming to GeForce Now this month, far from the biggest month we've seen, but it is also a month with two major day-and-date launches with Far Cry 6 from Ubisoft and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy from Square Enix.

The games coming to GeForce Now today include:

As for the rest of the month, we have games like Gone Home, STEINS;GATE 0, Paradise Killer, The Riftbreaker, The Forgotten City, Riders Republic, Guardians of the Galaxy and more to look forward to over the next few weeks.

KitGuru Says: Nvidia has been securing more and more day-and-date games for GeForce Now over the last year. We're now at a point where major Ubisoft and Square Enix games are available at launch, and we'll likely see EA joining those ranks soon too.

Eidos Montreal and Square Enix are hard at work on their single-player Guardians of the Galaxy game, which is due to release later this month. The PC version of the game will come with a host of exclusive features, including ray-traced reflections and DLSS support.

In a new trailer, the PC features of Guardians of the Galaxy are detailed, including support for up to 8K resolution, HDR and wide colour gamut support, diffuse illumination and higher quality lighting, real-time ray-tracing and of course, Nvidia's DLSS, which will enable higher performance on RTX series graphics cards.

Unfortunately, the trailer was not accompanied by PC minimum and recommended system requirements, but that information should be released within the next couple of weeks.

Unlike Marvel's Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy is a single-player action game, where players will take on the roll of Star Lord looking to take down a galactic threat. The game is set to release on the 26th of October.

KitGuru Says: I've got high hopes for this game, although I'm not expecting it to be as good as Rocksteady's Batman games or Insomniac's Spider-Man titles. Will any of you be picking up Guardians of the Galaxy later this month?

Ray-tracing and DLSS are two of the biggest and most recent breakthroughs in video game technology. With ray-tracing creating a much more dynamic and life-like image at the cost of performance, and DLSS using machine learning to increase the perceived resolution thereby improving performance, the two technologies work well in tandem. It has now been confirmed that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy will use both.

As part of Gamescom 2021, Nvidia provided fans with a look at some of the upcoming games which are set to use the company’s technology. Alongside confirmation that titles such as Battlefield 2042, Dying Light 2 Stay Human, Black Myth: Wukong, Bright Memory: Infinite, Chivalry 2, Faraday Protocol, GRIT, Loopmancer, Myst will be getting ray-tracing, the company also confirmed that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy would receive the ray-tracing experience.

Making the announcement, Nvidia revealed that “when Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy launches on October 26, the PC version will launch with ray-traced reflections and NVIDIA DLSS, giving GeForce RTX gamers the definitive PC experience.”

Those who do not have a ray-tracing capable GPU can still experience the enhancements brought by RTX, as the company also confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy will be playable via Nvidia’s GeForce Now service.

As part of this announcement, a sneak peak at the game running with ray-tracing on an RTX 3080 was released, giving fans a first look at this technology running on Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last night during E3, Square Enix officially unveiled its upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game, just as promised. Surprisingly, the game is coming out this year and will be a single-player, story-driven action/adventure game.

Guardians of the Galaxy has been in development at Eidos Montreal for several years now. Players will take on the role of Peter Quill, otherwise known as Star Lord, while the rest of the squad is controlled by AI. While players will mainly be fighting as one character, you can direct your AI squad to activate certain abilities.

The story starts off one year after the Guardians first get together, so the characters are all well-acquainted by this point. Players will get to choose dialogue options during conversations, which will have small changes for character interactions, but the story as a whole will always end the same way, so don't expect multiple major endings to explore.

So far, no DLC or microtransactions are planned for this game, nor will there be any ‘live service' elements as we saw with Marvel's Avengers in 2020. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to release on the 26th of October for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4 and PS5.

KitGuru Says: Square Enix is going in a completely different direction for Guardians of the Galaxy, which is good news, particularly after seeing Marvel's Avengers struggle to find its footing. Will any of you be picking this one up later this year?

With E3 mere days away, insiders have been offering last minute details regarding what fans can expect. Jason Schreier has now weighed in on the upcoming showcases, revealing some last-minute details on the much-anticipated Starfield, as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy game and more.

As part of the Triple Click podcast, well-known industry insider Jason Schreier claimed that the much-anticipated RPG from Bethesda Game Studios ‘Starfield’ will be shown off at the Microsoft conference, with a specific release date announced for sometime in late 2022.

Guardians of the Galaxy, which is being developed by Eidos Montreal, will reportedly be shown off at the Square Enix conference. Little is currently known about the game, but according to Schreier, it will not be a live service title.

Regarding Ubisoft, the publisher reportedly has a surprise game announcement set for E3. With its other project, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still said to be very very early in development; Skull and Bones is also far away, with it releasing in late 2022 at the very earliest; the next Assassin’s Creed game will be even bigger than Valhalla (somehow); and the Far Cry to come out after 6 will reportedly offer a radical change for the series (which has become rather formulaic in recent years).

With E3 so close, it is exciting to see how many of Schreier’s claims end up coming true, and what other surprises are set to be announced.

Back in 2017, Square Enix announced a deal with Marvel to produce two major video games based on the superhero franchise. The first was Marvel's Avengers, developed by Crystal Dynamics and released 2020. Now, it looks like the second game, developed by Eidos Montreal, is about to be announced.

Today Square Enix began teasing announcements for its E3 showcase on the 13th of June. The teaser poster promises news for Marvel's Avengers, Life is Strange: True Colors and Babylon's Fall. The poster also shows that we'll be getting a “world premiere” from Eidos Montreal.

While the poster doesn't explicitly state what this new game will be, leaks from back in 2017 suggested that Eidos Montreal is working on a Guardians of the Galaxy game in partnership with Marvel, having put the Deus Ex franchise on the back burner for a while.

Square Enix will be hosting its E3 announcements on the 13th of June at 8:15PM UK time.

KitGuru Says: Marvel's Avengers did not launch to the best reception, so hopefully this second project can learn from those mistakes.

Who said studying had to be boring? A university in Baltimore is offering a new course called ‘Media Genres: Media Marvels', in which participants will watch and study Marvel comic book movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man and Captain America in an effort to spot key insights in to modern culture.

A press release about the course says: “The course, ‘Media Genres: Media Marvels,' will examine how Marvel's series of interconnected films and television shows, plus related media and comic book sources and Joseph Campbell's monomyth of the ‘hero's journey,' offer important insights into modern culture. The course is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.”

guardian-of-the-galaxy-poster1-600x400

The course will start being offered to students during the Spring of 2015. The professor of the course, Arnold T. Blumberg, has taught about comic book mythology for years.

“Every generation has a modern media mythology that serves as a framework for entertaining as well as educating about ethics, morality, issues of race, gender, class, and so on”, he explained in the press release. “For the past several years, ‘Harry Potter' and ‘Lord of the Rings' have served in that role for tens of millions. When I was younger, it was the first ‘Star Wars' series, which I saw in the theater.”

The professor then goes on to say that these days, Marvel is providing that fictional framework with its completely mapped out universe. A chunk of the course will spent taking a look at the impact of Guardians of the Galaxy:

“One thing we'll do is dive into the impact of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy' film, which proved two things: mainstream movie audiences are not remotely tired of superhero movies; and Marvel Studios can now release a sci-fi adventure that actually features talking trees and raccoons.”

A lot of focus will also be placed on Tony Stark as he was portrayed as “someone who could readily comment on the insanity around him”,  which in turn “grounded the entire Marvel film canon.”

KitGuru Says: So we now live in a world where you can go to University and study Marvel movies, granted it does have some real ties to media studies as a whole. Would any of you guys take Marvel studies if it was offered at your university?
