Avengers Endgame released in 2019 to global fanfare and billions of dollars in profit. Since then, Marvel has partnered with a number of studios in an attempt to replicate this success in video game form. Unfortunately, it seems that for Square Enix, all the Marvel games did was burn $200 million.

In the wake of the surprising announcement that Square Enix is selling off many of its western divisions, details surrounding the circumstances of the sales have begun to spring up. One of the most interesting details comes from the Senior Analyst at MST Financial, David Gibson, who said:

“Marvel – that’s the reason why Square sold its NA team for $300m. Because in a little under two years they lost $200m on two Marvel games.”

The two games being referred to here are of course Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s Avenger’s success – or lack thereof – has been widely discussed ever since the game first launched in 2020, with the ambitious title never managing to hit its stride. Guardians was a critical success, though Square Enix publicly announced their disappointment when it came to the game’s sales (even though GOTG has only been out for just over 6 months). The reveal that Square's Marvel deal didn’t pan out how they hoped is not surprising, but it is disappointing. Hopefully all parties can learn from their mistakes.

Square Enix is an interesting company. Consisting of both Japanese and Western studios, the latter’s games have historically been seen as under-delivering when compared to the expectations of the publisher. Such is the case with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which according to Square, “undershot our initial expectations.”

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy launched back in October 2021 to positive reviews from both critics and fans alike, even going to win a small number of Game of the Year awards from some media outlets. Despite this, the game’s sales seemingly did not impress, with Yosuke Matsuda saying:

“The HD Games sub-segment launched ‘Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy’ in Q3. Despite strong reviews, the game's sales on launch undershot our initial expectations.”

Matsuda’s comments on the game does however then shift into a more positive light, with him claiming that “sales initiatives that we kicked off in November 2021 and continued into the new year have resulted in sales growth, and we intend to work to continue to expand sales to make up for the title's slow start.”

Square Enix has historically had high expectations for all of its games, and as such,  many of the titles unfortunately end up selling less than the publisher expects – even if sales were relatively good. While Square Enix’s mentality seemingly remains the same, it is encouraging to see Guardians breaking this cycle of disappointment, and shooting to success – albeit slowly.

With the Halo: Master Chief Collection, most of the mainline Halo games were brought over to the PC platform, allowing fans to experience Microsoft’s premiere first-person shooter franchise. Unfortunately, one of the biggest games, Halo 5 has yet to make its way over, and according to 343 Industries, fans shouldn’t expect to ever see it come to PC.

Recently we reported on a datamine which seemed to suggest that a number of games could be coming to the PC platform, including God of War, New Super Mario Bros and more. One of the games listed was Halo 5. While this list was eventually claimed to be merely speculative, the discussion surrounding Halo 5 coming to PC was revived within the community.

In response to this, the community director Brian Jarrard revealed some unfortunate news, saying “Maybe this was for [Halo 5 Forge] but I can confirm there are no plans to bring Halo 5 to PC. We know there's some demand for it, but as we've stated before, not in the cards as the studio is fully focused on Infinite and MCC.”

Currently, almost every mainline Halo game is available on PC thanks to the Master Chief Collection. This list includes Halo: Combat Evolved; Halo 2; Halo 3; Halo 3: ODST; Halo: Reach and Halo 4. In fact, the only game not available on PC is Halo 5. With Infinite set to release later this year, it would make perfect sense for the team at 343i to port the title to PC so that fans can be caught up on the franchise before the release of Infinite.

Unfortunately, it looks as though this will not be the case, and with Halo: Infinite set to be the next 10 years of Halo, it is unlikely that the game will ever make its way onto the platform. Then again, it is possible that a Halo 5: Anniversary Edition may be released in the far future. Until then, if you wish to play Halo 5, the only way to do so is on Xbox.

While Bungie originally intended for Halo to be a PC game, ever since Halo 3 the series main games have been exclusive to Xbox and despite rumours suggesting that we might get the Master Chief Collection or Halo 5, it now looks unlikely. However, the future of Halo on the PC is also sounding surprisingly positive.

Speaking at the Build conference this week, Microsoft's head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, said: “Halo 5 shipped as a console game, if we're going to bring Halo to PC moving forward then we're going to plan on both platforms. I don't want to get into the world where we're looking back”.

Halo-5-main

He also added on that even though Halo 5 is unlikely, that doesn't mean that there aren't elements of the story that won't end up on the PC.

To be fair to Microsoft, Halo 5 was first announced alongside the Xbox One before Phil Spencer took over the division and began changing the company's thinking when it came to the PC platform. That said, if future main series Halo games were to end up on the PC, it would nice to be able to go back and catch up on the three games worth of story that we missed out on.

KitGuru Says: I would love to have all of the main Halo games on the PC, as would many other gamers. However, it seems that it is unlikely to happen now. Things are sounding positive for the future though so at least there is that. What was the last Halo game you played? Would you play more if they landed on PC? I must admit I've had Halo 5 since October and I still haven't got around to playing it properly.

Last night was a big one for Microsoft, a big one for 343 industries and a big one for British Halo fans especially, as along with Halo 5: Guardians being released, the UK had a huge launch event last night. Hosted by Xbox social marketing manager Graeme Boyd and TV presenter Julia Hardy, the event took place in the Roundhouse in London, featuring some solid and some uncomfortable banter from the hosts, some live action cosplaying and live-play of the game itself.

And there's now a near three hour video of the whole thing if you missed it.

Admittedly the first 26 minutes of that are a countdown timer, so you might want to skip through it a little bit, but once the action starts there's plenty on show. Along with the in-game action, shoutcasters keep the crowd informed about intricacies and what's going on at any particular point and I don't want to spoil it, but there is a raffle at one point.

The Spartan suits were a nice touch

New game modes are shown off, including the Warzone mode, though Halo 5: Guardians does feature a number of play options: including Slayer, Swat, Stronghold and capture the flag.

During the show, the hosts also gave away a pair of Xbox One Halo 5 special edition consoles, including the console itself, Halo 5 and a limited edition controller. While the excitement came mostly from them, you have to imagine the winners were rather excited.

Microsoft's biggest exclusive of the year is about to roll around in a few weeks time and it looks like retail copies are leaking out already. Halo 5: Guardians is due out on the 27th of October but just days after the game going gold (meaning ready to ship), images and new tidbits of information are starting to come out, including the game's massive file size. A similar leak occurred when Halo 4 was close to release a few years back.

When the current generation of consoles rolled around, gamers had to get used to bigger file sizes across all platforms. Back in the 360 and PS3 games, it was rare for a game to be over 20GB in size, now the new norm is anywhere between 30GB and 50GB but it looks like Halo 5 will exceed even that.

Similarly to massive titles like Grand Theft Auto V, Halo 5 will require around 60GB of hard drive space, which is actually a pretty big ask considering how easy it is to fill up the initial 500GB drive found in the Xbox One, which only actually gives you around 300GB of free space for games and apps.

343 Industries has big plans for Halo 5, though it still remains to be seen if the studio will avoid the same issues it had with last year's Master Chief Collection. That said, there was a multiplayer beta held back in January, so there has been plenty of time to work out the kinks. On top of that, Halo 5 won't feature local co-op, so the online co-op experience will have to be seamless in order to keep things fun.

Halo 5: Guardians is on the way next month from 343 Industries. It's set to be Microsoft's biggest exclusive launch of the year however, some compromises have had to be made throughout development. At first, local co-op was cut from the game in order to maintain 60 frames per second and like a few other games on the Xbox One, Halo 5 will need dynamic resolution support to maintain its frame rate.

Other games have used this technique on the Xbox One before, the most recent example being The Witcher 3, which hovers between 1600×900 and 1920×1080 depending on what is happening on the screen at any given time. Halo 5 will hover between those same resolutions in order to keep a solid 60 frames per second.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ot06dXm64yc']

This is actually a good compromise, after all, shooters should be played at 60 frames per second ideally. However, since I'm a PC gamer at heart, I would also like to point out that these compromises wouldn't be needed at all if Microsoft would just give in and bring the main games in the series back to the PC.

343 Industries explained its dynamic resolution technology over on Halo Waypoint. The game officially launches on the 27th of October and will see a rogue Master Chief face off against Agent Locke.

KitGuru Says: I actually use my Xbox One pretty often for gaming. However, I do wish that Microsoft would bring Halo back to the PC. Not necessarily for prettier graphics but because I much prefer the mouse and keyboard for shooters. Either way, it's nice to see 343 Industries coming up with more creative solutions to keep the frame rate up, rather than just pushing for fidelity and compromising performance.

Over the years, Halo has gained a reputation as one of the best ‘couch co-op' shooters around thanks to its split-screen multiplayer. In-fact, it was one of the selling points for the Master Chief Collection last year over on the Xbox One. Unfortunately, split-screen won't be returning in Halo 5 Guardians, news that has disappointed many fans.

However, 343 Industries does have a good, technical reason for the feature being omitted in the latest game in the series. While many fans have been asking for the feature to come back, it simply can't, according to Halo Franchise Director, Frank O'Connor.

Halo5_KeyArt_Horiz_Final

Responding to a tweet that used the hash tag #BringHalo5SplitScreenBack, O'Connor said: “if we could do it, we would do it. But it is what they call ‘nontrivial'”. The technical reasons surrounding the removal of split-screen in Halo 5 were detailed by 343 Industried in a blog post back in July, which said:

“Many of our ambitious goals for Halo 5 would be compromised in a split-screen setting and the time spent optimizing and addressing split-screen-specific issues would take focus from building other parts of the game. Game development is a balancing act of resources, time, and technology, and in this case we made the tough decision to sacrifice something that's been near and dear to us all.”

Even if fans did express their interest in a split screen mode now, the game is approaching the final stages of development over the next two months, ahead of its release in October, so it is likely too late at this point.

KitGuru Says: Split screen has been less of a focus point for developers for quite a while now. Halo was one of the last big franchises to include it but unfortunately, it looks like that will now stop, perhaps if the Xbox One had more powerful hardware, 343 Industries would have been able to pull it off.

With E3 coming up, it is time for Microsoft to start ramping up the marketing machine for Halo 5: Guardians, which is due out this October. We will undoubtedly be seeing more of the game next week, although Game Informer has been given the go-ahead to publish a trove of new details this week.

There are some good points and some bad points. Unfortunately, Halo 5 won't be featuring split screen co-op, which is a huge shame as it was one of the few triple A series left that supported it. That doesn't mean no co-op though, there will be up to four player online co-op for the story mode and the best part is that it won't require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, although the traditional multiplayer mode will.

Halo-5-e1427729640584

Moving on to more details about the story, which will feature Master Chief accompanied by the Blue Team. While Master Chief is set to be on the run in this game, it seems that he isn't out there on his own as he will be commanding the Blue Team throughout the story.

343 Industries has big plans for competitive multiplayer as well, with more than twenty maps planned for launch. An additional 15 maps will be released for free between launch and July next year as well, which is a big step in the right direction as it means the player base will not be divided.

Now 343 Industries does have some hurdles to overcome as last year's Master Chief Collection launch went painfully wrong. In the Game Informer magazine issue, Bonnie Ross notes that it probably would have been better off shipping each Master Chief Collection title separately, rather than attempting to bundle it all on one disc. In the future, every single Halo title will have a beta test before releasing in an effort to avoid anymore bad launches.

Halo 5 Guardians will be launching on the 27th of October. The game's multiplayer component had a beta back in January. 343 Industries has had its hands tied over the last few months with The Master Chief Collection, which had a rather unfortunate launch.
