CD Projekt Red has a massive roadmap in place for future games, including a new Witcher trilogy, a remake of the first Witcher game and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. With so many projects on the go and a limited amount of time and resources, some other games are going to fall by the wayside.

This week, CD Projekt Red announced that after seven years of development, it is dropping support for Gwent, the standalone card game that launched following the success and popularity of Gwent within The Witcher 3. While the standalone version of Gwent made some changes to the way the game is played, it was also supported for a long time with tournaments and expansions.

Gwent will continue to be supported through 2023, but it seems next year will be the game's last. In 2024, support for the game will end and there will be no more expansions. While development support is coming to an end, CD Projekt Red is not shutting down the game's servers, so you'll still be able to play it after that date.

CDPR's Witcher mobile spin-off, The Witcher: Monster Slayer, is shutting down. Servers for that game will be going offline in June 2023, but the game will also be unlisted from the App Store and Play Store at the end of January 2023.

KitGuru Says: Gwent had a great run and the card pool has expanded with plenty of great new options. Its time might be coming to an end, but there will still be some new cards released next year as a last hoorah.

There is a new GWENT game coming out – GWENT: Rogue Mage, offering a new single-player campaign with roguelike deck-building mechanics. Technically, this is an expansion to GWENT the multiplayer card game, but Rogue Mage is available as a standalone game.

The announcement was made via IGN, where the game director, Vladimir Tortsov, took the opportunity to share a few words. The GWENT game of today is primarily PvP-oriented, but many fans had their first contact with the card game through Witcher 3, playing PvE content. With Rogue Mage, the studio aims to deliver a new single-player experience with the modern GWENT format.

In Rogue Mage, you play as Alzur, a wizard trying to craft the first Witcher. The expansion features four decks, each focused on a concept (e.g. boosting cards). You begin with just 12 cards, building up your deck as you progress through the story. The game director claims gamers will take about 30 hours to complete and collect everything the expansion has to offer.

Gwent: Rogue Mage is now available for PC, Android and iOS for $10/£8/€10. There's also a premium pack priced at $20/£17/€20 with skins, cosmetics and additional cards for the base game.

Earlier this month, CD Projekt Red was hit by a cyberattack, during which the attackers were able to steal confidential documents and the source code for several of the studio's games. The source code for GWENT was the first to leak, but CD Projekt Red is attempting to suppress its spread through DMCA takedowns.

As reported by Vice, CD projekt Red has been sending DMCA takedown notices to Twitter users sharing links to download the source code for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. The site obtained emails sent on CD Projekt Red's behalf by a copyright monitoring firm, which confirm that these takedowns are being issued due to the Gwent source code leak.

“Description of infringement: Illegally obtained source code of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. Posted without authorisation, not intended to be released to the public,” the DMCA takedown notice reads.

Recently, it was also reported that the source code for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 were auctioned off on the dark web. So far, the source code for Gwent is the only one that has spread widely.

KitGuru Says: CD Projekt Red is likely going to be investigating this attack and dealing with the ramifications for quite some time. We'll be following the story as it goes for more updates.

CD Projekt Red first began experimenting with mobile games with GWENT, with the card game releasing on PC, iOS and Android. Now, the single-player campaign spin-off ‘Thronebreaker' is also heading beyond PC, with the game releasing on iOS today.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a single-player RPG where players take on the role of Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia as she is forced into a war to fend off the Nilfgaardians. The game has been available on PC for quite some time but now, it is also out on iOS for both iPhone and iPad.

The iOS version features dedicated touch-screen controls and cloud-save support, so you can switch between the mobile and PC versions of the game while maintaining progress across both versions.

As a bonus, those picking up Thronebreaker on iOS can get bonuses in GWENT, including unique ornaments and 20 new cards. You can download Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales on iOS, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I've been meaning to give this a go for quite some time. It does seem like the sort of game that would be good on an iPad, so maybe this will be the version I finally pick up. Have many of you played Thronebreaker? Are you thinking about getting it for iOS?

Gwent has finally come to Android, bringing the notorious Witcher card game to Google's mobile operating system. This version of the game supports cross-play with other platforms, allowing duels between Android players and iOS and PC players.

For those of you who don't know, Gwent is a free-to-play card game set in the Witcher universe. You build your deck around one of the 6 existing factions, such as Nilfgaard, Skellige, Northern Realms, and more. Choose between a set of multiple game modes, and defeat your foes with the army you've built.

The cards you pick include famous characters from the Witcher universe, including Geralt, Vesemir, Cirilla, Yennefer and much more. The game was designed based on the Gwent card game introduced in “The Witcher 3”, but it has evolved beyond that. Focusing on skill instead of luck, the victor of a Gwent match is the first to win two out of three rounds, meaning that if you lose the first round, you can still turn the board to your side.

You can transfer your progress and purchases to the Android version through a GOG account associated with another version of the game. According to CD Projekt RED, you'll need at least 1.5GB of RAM and Android 7.0 to run Gwent on your Android device.

There's a celebratory event to coincide with the launch, as any player that logs in until March 31st, 12:00 noon CEST, will be given a free Ultimate Premium Keg. If you have pre-registered to Gwent on Android, you'll also get an Imperial Golem avatar after you login. There will also be multiple extra daily rewards throughout the game's launch week.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is now available to download on Google Play Store. If you want to learn more about the game, you can visit its official website.

Back in December, shortly after the official launch of GWENT on iOS, CD Projekt Red announced that console versions of the game would be cancelled in favour of increased focus on PC and mobile. Now, those mobile efforts are expanding, with the game set to officially launch on Android soon.

Today, CD Projekt Red announced that GWENT: The Witcher Card Game will arrive on the Google Play Store on the 24th of March. Players can already pre-register on Android to receive a notification when the app is available to download too.

GWENT on Android will have a touch control interface just as you would expect, in addition to cross-play with PC and iOS, so you will always have a healthy player base to matchmake with. Beyond that, all card pack purchases carry over between platforms, so your decks, cards and earned rewards will carry over whether your playing on PC or a smartphone.

It is a pretty good time to jump into GWENT too, as the game's latest expansion just dropped, adding 70 new cards.

KitGuru Says: It has been almost a full year since GWENT was announced for smartphones, so this release is long overdue. Are any of you still playing GWENT? Will you be downloading it on Android when it becomes available?

Back in 2018, CD Projekt Red launched ‘Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales', an experimental deck-building RPG with a lengthy story set in The Witcher universe. Now, that adventure can be played through on the Nintendo Switch, bringing the added benefit of portable play.

CD Projekt Red announced this morning that Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is now available on the Nintendo Switch, complete with a launch trailer:

While the multiplayer version of GWENT does sell card packs, Thronebreaker is free of microtransactions, with 250 cards unlockable through gameplay and special animated versions of cards available for completionists.

Just like the main Witcher games, this is an RPG, so you will be exploring and making choices through dialogue options along the way. There are 11 different endings to be seen, so there should be plenty of replay value here.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is now available for Nintendo Switch via the eShop. No physical version has been announced at this time.

KitGuru Says: I usually wait to play games like this until they are available on the Switch nowadays, largely thanks to being able to play in handheld mode. Have many of you tried Thronebreaker since its original launch? Will you be checking out the Switch version?

Shortly after announcing that the console versions of GWENT would no longer be in active development, CD Projekt Red has begun rolling out the card game's latest expansion. In keeping with the revised number of platforms, the 70-card expansion is now available on PC and iOS but won't be coming to Xbox One or PS4.

Merchants of Ofir is the latest expansion, drawing on inspiration from the exotic land that players had the chance to visit during The Witcher 3's Hearts of Stone expansion. There are 70 new cards in total, including new neutral cards for all GWENT deck types, as well as some faction-specific cards to shake up builds and help players discover new strategies.

The new expansion also adds a new in-game mechanic called ‘scenarios', which are like in-game challenges to achieve specific objectives to evolve an artifact card for maximum effect. Strategems are a new card type also coming to the game, which help determine your unique bonus for going first in a match.

The Merchants of Ofir expansion is available now on PC and iOS. It will also be included with the Android version of the game in early 2020. For now, players that log into GWENT before December 16th will get a free keg containing five new cards from this expansion.

After shipping The Witcher 3's final expansion, some of that development team decided to stay on the path, refining GWENT into its own standalone card game. The game has been out on PC for a long time now and spread to Xbox One and PS4 late last year. However, with the console versions not doing so well, CD Projekt Red has decided to drop support for them, opting to focus all future efforts on PC and mobile.

In an announcement last night, CD Projekt Red said that it will be dropping the console versions of the game as it is becoming harder to keep feature parity between all the versions. GWENT on Xbox One and PS4 will essentially be ‘paused' from the 9th of December onward, so while it will still be playable, there will be no future updates for these versions. However, the team will continue to release updates for the PC and mobile versions of the game.

gwentcardgame-e1470926945909.jpg

Those who have progress on GWENT for Xbox One or PS4 will be able to transfer their progress to a GOG account, which can then be used on the PC, iOS and Android versions of the game. So you can keep your custom decks, progress, unlocked card collection etc. However, this option is only available until the 9th of June 2020.

After June next year, the Xbox One and PS4 versions of GWENT will no longer be operational and will be delisted.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru Says: Perhaps this is why games like Hearthstone have never spread to Xbox One or PS4. It is a shame to see two versions of GWENT essentially cancelled but if feature parity is an issue, then refocusing on compatible platforms does make sense. Do any of you currently play the standalone version of GWENT at all?

Just over a year after its release on Windows, The Witcher 3 spin-off “Gwent: The Witcher Card Game” has officially released on iOS. The game, which is an expanded form of the card game playable within The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, is free to play and can be downloaded right now.

When the Witcher 3 released back in 2015, one its most fun side activities was the card game ‘Gwent’. Fans enjoyed its mechanics so much so, that a fully featured spin-off was created. Launching in October of 2018, after a year long beta, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game was released to positive reception. The game later came to PS4 and Xbox One in December.

Free-to-play collectible card games are most suited to mobile platforms utilising touch controls, and with Gwent arriving on iOS, that can now be delivered. Gwent is a two player, turn-based card game, similar in nature to Hearthstone, but utilising multiple rows. Each game consists of three relatively short rounds, leading to quick and exciting matches, with high eSports potential. The game was nominated for “Most Promising New eSports Game” at the 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards.

If you’ve been playing for the last year on PC and don’t want to start all over, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that you will be able to carry your progress over from the PC version.

While it was announced that Gwent would come to Android eventually, there has been no announcement of a release date as of yet. Perhaps with the release on iOS out of the way, the studio can now focus their efforts on porting the game to Android. Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is available to download for free from today on the Apple App Store.

KitGuru says: Will you be downloading Gwent? Did you play it much when it was a simple side activity in the Witcher 3? Do you think developers should port more PC and console games to iOS and Android? Let us know down below.

After shipping The Witcher 3's final expansion, some members of the team at CD Projekt Red decided to take the mini-game and release it as a standalone card game. After plenty of time in beta, GWENT launched late last year and the first expansion set of cards is set to arrive very soon. Beyond that, the game is finally heading to mobile this year.

GWENT first launched on PC back in October and then spread to Xbox One and PS4 a month later. Now with the expansion card set nailed down and ready to ship, the team's attention is turning towards the mobile launch. We don't have an exact launch date yet, but GWENT will be arriving on iOS ‘later this year', while the Google Play Store launch is still TBC.

gwentcardgame-e1470926945909.jpg

This should help spread the game to a wider audience and give dedicated players more opportunities to play it by taking it on the go. The news arrives just as GWENT's Crimson Curse expansion is set to launch, which adds 100 new cards to the game, all themed around vampires. Five new leader cards are also being added to the expansion.

KitGuru Says: While I loved GWENT in The Witcher 3, I haven't put much time into the standalone version. However, that will likely change as soon as I can get it onto my iPad. Are many of you still playing GWENT? Are you returning for the Crimson Curse expansion?

It’s no secret that CD Projekt Red operates against the grain in the video game industry, often resisting the greedy temptations indulged by other studios. Opening up pre-orders for its Gwent spin-off, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, is no different, as it promises there will be no exclusive items or trickery to bait buyers ahead of its launch next month.

While Thronebreaker has evolved into a fully-fledged 30-hour experience in its own right, it blends card-based combat as seen in Gwent while incorporating unique puzzles across many of The Witcher’s famed regions. Essentially, the gameplay is an experiment for the studio.

Behind the scene logistics, however, will not bog this title down. No “exclusive item” malarkey or extra rewards to draw early sales. Just good, old fashioned gameplay. In fact, not only did the developer insist against such a practice, but a number of items will be available to all players at no extra cost, including the official soundtrack, accompanying artwork and a graphic novel.

Like most things CD Projekt Red does, this is a reaction to the current standard of practices as the studio attempts to set a new standard. “One of the things about this company has always been we want to show the game industry how to do things,” explains Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer Patrick Mills in an interview with EDGE Magazine. “We want to change the game industry. We want to say, ‘We can do things differently, we don’t have to do things that way.’ It’s in our motto: ‘We are rebels,’ right?”

Thronebreaker should tide people over as they wait for the long-in-development Cyberpunk 2077, releasing on October 23rd for PC and December 4th for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Despite its debatably sizeable campaign, the spin-off won’t even launch at full price, costing just £23.39 / $29.99.

KitGuru Says: As always, impressive stuff from CD Projekt Red that restores a little bit of faith in the industry. Hopefully this will help push publishers into giving developers that little bit more freedom, easing up on pre-order bonuses, timed exclusivity and, by some miracle, microtransactions. How do you feel about CD Projekt Red’s latest efforts?

Since shipping The Witcher 3's final expansion, CD Projekt Red has had a team working on a standalone version of GWENT. The project has evolved significantly over time, splitting into two separate games. GWENT will continue to operate as is but there will also be a second game called ‘Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales', with a new 30-hour long campaign. Today, the studio announced release dates for both games.

We've been able to play GWENT in beta form for quite some time. The game will be getting a huge update on the 23rd of October, officially bringing it out of beta on PC. The console versions will take a bit longer, arriving on the 4th of December. The GWENT Homecoming update includes a complete rework of the game’s board into a fully three-dimensional battlefield featuring two distinct rows, a redesign of the game’s visuals now in sync with the dark and gritty feel of the world of The Witcher, a new deck building experience, as well as new card mechanics. Other parts of the game have also been reworked to bring GWENT standalone more in-line with the version found inside of The Witcher 3.

The next big piece of news is that Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales will also be launching on the 23rd of October for PC and the 4th of December for consoles. Thronebreaker is a single-player RPG set in The Witcher universe, combining “narrative-driven exploration with unique puzzles and card battle mechanics”. Thronebreaker was created “by the developers responsible for some of the most iconic moments” in The Witcher 3.

Story-wise, we'll be seeing the tale of ‘Meve', a war-veteran queen of Lyria and Rivia, two of the northern realms. These realms are facing a Nilfgaardian invasion, so be prepared for a big war.

KitGuru Says: I wasn't expecting Thronebreaker to launch so soon but I am very excited to finally get my hands on it. A card game won't be for everyone, but I've always been a big fan. Will any of you be playing GWENT or Thronebreaker at release?

CD Projekt Red has been working away on its standalone version of Gwent ever since development wrapped up on The Witcher 3. The game evolved from being a simple spin-off to being its own huge project, complete with a single-player campaign. The scope has grown once again, as Gwent's campaign mode, ‘Thronebreaker', will now be a 30-hour long RPG.

CD Projekt Red has often impressed with its efforts. The older Witcher games both received huge updates post-release and The Witcher 3 upped the ante with its two expansions. The studio will be surpassing expectations once again with Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.

As part of CD Projekt's latest financial earnings report, it was revealed that the game has evolved into a standalone title with a 30-hour RPG campaign complete with choices and consequences. In-game actions will also be decided by the outcome of Gwent games, so it all ties back together. Thronebreaker will be available separately, so you won't need to install the Gwent client to play through it.

A release date for Thronebreaker has not been announced yet. However, the game is on track to launch alongside Gwent, which is currently undergoing a big rework based on fan feedback. Currently, the two games are targeting a Q4 release.

KitGuru Says: CD Projekt Red changed a little too much for my liking when it comes to Gwent. However, the studio seems to be getting things back on track and Thronebreaker already sounds very exciting. Have many of you been playing the standalone version of Gwent? Will you be jumping in for the Thronebreaker campaign?

Back at E3 this year, CD Projekt Red took to the stage to officially announce a standalone version of Gwent, the much loved card game that debuted in The Witcher 3 last year. Originally, people were going to get their first chance to play in September but it looks like things need a bit more work.

This week, CD Projekt Red announced that Gwent would now be going in to closed beta on the 25th of October, rather than releasing in September.

gwentcardgame

“At E3 we announced that we'd launch the Closed Beta of GWENT: The Witcher Card Game in September. Unfortunately, we feel we need some extra time with the game before we hand it off to you for testing, we know we can make a first impression only once, and want to be sure everything is ready before we blast off. Delivering a good game is more important to us than keeping a deadline.”

So if you signed up for the Gwent beta and have been waiting for launch, you can now expect to get your hands on the game for the first time in late October.

KitGuru Says: Delays can be disappointing but a few extra weeks waiting for Gwent won’t hurt. In the meantime, we still have plenty of Gwent to play in The Witcher 3. Are any of you looking forward to the standalone version of Gwent? Have you signed up for the beta?

One of the more surprising parts of The Witcher 3 has been Gwent, the collectable card game baked into the epic open-world title. While this has been rumoured for a while, it looks like CD Projekt Red is now gearing up to announce a standalone version of Gwent soon.

The leak comes from Nerdleaks, who got a look at a new trademark and logo registered by CD Projekt. The trademark was filed just two days ago at the time of writing but we don't know when an official announcement will be made. Perhaps we will hear something at E3 next week.

Gwent

Gwent will have quite a bit of competition though, with Hearthstone currently dominating the digital card game space and Bethesda set to throw its hat in the ring with its Elder Scrolls based CCG.

KitGuru Says: A lot of people really enjoyed Gwent as part of The Witcher 3 so it will be interesting to see how successful a standalone card game will be. Hopefully we get some more details soon.

CD Projekt Red is continuing to shower us with free DLC for The Witcher: Wild Hunt. So far, we've had a new Witcher contract, new weapons, armour and this week we are getting some new Gwent cards known as the ‘Ballad Heroes' set. There is also a new quest called ‘Fools Gold'.

As the name suggests, the new Gwent set gives you access to characters heard about in Dandelion's ballads. The set is neutral so it can be used with any hero card found in the game.

The Fool's Gold quest puts Geralt in league with the village idiot. Together they try to figure out the story behind a village populated by pigs and only pigs. If you've beat the game already, then this gives you an excuse to hop back in and explore the world a little more.

As far as Gwent goes, it is good to see the developers expanding on the card list to change things up a bit.

KitGuru Says: There is still a few weeks of free DLC to go so it will be interesting to see what else CD Projekt Red comes up with. Have any of you played Gwent properly? It is actually a surprisingly good mini-game, especially once you've built up a solid collection of cards.
