At the Embedded World 2015 trade-show this week Asrock demonstrated its first mainboard for LGA1151 central processing units code-named Skylake. DFI, a well-known maker of mainboards that no longer produces products for consumers, is also showcasing its embedded/industrial LGA1151 roadmap at the show.

Although makers of desktop mainboards are not allowed to demonstrate motherboards for next-generation Intel Corp.’s processors code-named “Skylake” before actual launch, the situation is considerably different on the market of platforms for embedded applications. Given extremely long lifecycles of products there, manufacturers have to demo future mainboards as early as possible to give their clients a clear understanding what to expect.

asrock_imb_190_skylake_lga1151

Asrock’s IMB-190 mainboard for industrial PCs comes in mini-ITX form-factor and sports LGA1151 socket for next-generation Intel Core i-series or Celeron processors based on the code-named “Skylake” micro-architecture. The motherboard supports two DDR3 DIMM slots for up to 16GB of memory, one mSATA port, one PCIe 3.0 x4 slot, one miniPCIe port, two SATA-6Gb/s connectors as well as one mSATA. The platform has two Gigabit Ethernet adapters and supports an optional TPM module. The IMB-190 also features three HDMI outputs as well as one eDP or one dual-channel LVDS to enable embedded display support.

asrock_imb_190_skylake_lga1151_2

The Asrock IMB-190 motherboard, which image was published by ComputerBase, is nothing really special. It has all the connectors needed for industrial-grade platforms and design optimized for unfriendly environments. What is noteworthy is that Asrock decided not to implement the new M.2 slot for modern solid-state drives. While at present there are not a lot of rugged SSDs in that form-factor, this will change in the future.

asrock_imb_190_skylake_lga1151_3

DFI, a motherboards maker that is dedicated solely to embedded and industrial mainboards, outlined plans to introduce 17 platforms for Intel “Skylake” processors based on Intel’s Q170, H110, QM170 and C236 chipsets. The new motherboards will support chips with 15W, 35W, 65W and 95W thermal design power. DFI plans to sample its new LGA1151 mainboards in Q3 or Q4 this year and to start their mass production in Q1 2016, a year from now.

dfi_socket_lga1151_roadmap

If mainboard makers believe that Intel will roll-out embedded versions of its “Skylake” microprocessors in the first quarter of next year, then it is guaranteed that regular versions of the chips will hit the market in 2015. Of course, if Intel does not change its plans.

Today we are going to take a look at an interesting water cooling product – the Raijintek Triton, an ‘all in one' CPU cooler. The Triton has been designed to be user upgradable … in fact Raijintek take things a step further and actively encourage users (who have the necessary skills) to customise their loop.

We have reviewed a number of products from Raijintek in the past and have been quite impressed with what they have to offer.  It is clear that they are looking to take on the longer established brands in the market with a slightly different take on what is already out there.

A web-site has published the first details regarding Intel 100-series chipsets that will power personal computers based on the code-named Skylake microprocessors. As expected, Intel’s next-generation core-logic sets will support SATA Express as well as some other innovations. What is interesting is that the new chipsets will also support enhanced number of PCI Express 3.0 lanes.

Intel’s 100-series family of chipsets for Skylake microprocessors will contain six members: Q170, Q150, B150, H110, H170 and Z170, according to a publication by Chinese VR-Zone web-site. The new core-logic sets will support from eight to 20 PCI Express 3.0 lanes, up to three SATA Express x2 ports, USB 3.0 SSIC specification (up to 10 ports) and so on.

intel_100_series_chipset_transition

Thanks to the fact that the 100-series chipsets will support PCI Express 3.0 technology, the new Skylake-based PCs will be able to take advantage of multiple graphics cards and very rapid solid-state drives with SATA Express PCIe 3.0-based interface (with up to 2GB/s peak bandwidth). Improved support of multi-GPU configurations and SATAe PCIe 3.0 SSDs will automatically make Skylake-based platforms a choice of enthusiasts even despite of the fact that Intel has no plans to offer unlocked Skylake processors next year, according to alleged roadmap of the company.

intel_100_series_chipset

Considering the fact that Intel preps six chipsets for its Skylake microprocessors, it is likely that availability of such chips will be very broad.

KitGuru Says: It looks like Intel’s 100-series chipsets will be the company’s most revolutionary core-logic sets in years. It is rather surprising that the new platforms will not support USB 3.1 with improved speed and a new connector. It remains to be seen whether Intel's 200-series chipsets will bring support for PCI Express 4.0 and USB 3.1 in 2016.

Today we are going to take a look at the Kraken X40, which is one of NZXT's first attempts at a performance liquid cooler.  It is a similar design to the X60, however it features a smaller 140 mm radiator for those who don't have room for a 280 mm unit in their case.  We look forward to seeing how it performs in our tests.

Like the Kraken X60, the X40 is based on Asetek technology, making it similar to the Corsair H90.  We will be looking at the differences between the two coolers in this review, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each.

We will also look at how it compares to the Kraken X60 and Corsair H110, to show how the larger radiator affects performance.  The 140 mm radiator differentiates the X40 from the competition as it has more surface area than the myriad of 120 mm coolers on the market.

Features:

  • World's first all-in-one 140mm cooler with capacity to mount up to two 140mm fans.
  • High performance pump and copper block with interactive digital fan control.
  • Integrated HUE controlled LED pump cap.
  • Large tower support with extended 16″ tubing and premium black sleeved cables for a clean look and improved airflow.
  • Completed sealed system backed by a 2 year warranty.

The post NZXT Kraken X60 Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>

Today we are going to take a look at the Kraken X60 which is NZXT's first attempt at a performance liquid cooler.  Over the past few years there have been a number of different companies trying to enter the all-in-one liquid cooling market, following the success of Corsair and Antec. Companies such as Zalman, Cooler Master and now NZXT are all trying to make their mark.

It is quite easy for new companies to enter this market, as most of the products on offer are based on exactly the same technology from Asetek, the company that manufactured the original Corsair H50.  As a result, the differences between most of the liquid cooling units can be attributed to the different fans bundled with each unit. That said, Corsair only use Asetek for their budget range and have a number of models based on CoolIT Systems technology.

It doesn't come as a surprise that the Kraken X60 is based on an Asetek design which differentiates itself by incorporating a 280 mm radiator, rather than the 240 mm model adopted by most of the competition.  It's therefore very similar to the Corsair H110 which we reviewed recently, which was also based on an Asetek design, featuring a 280 mm radiator.

Features

  • World's first all-in-one 280mm cooler with capacity to mount up to four 140mm fans.
  • High performance pump and copper block with interactive digital fan control.
  • Integrated HUE controlled LED pump cap.
  • Large tower support with extended 16″ tubing and premium black sleeved cables for a clean look and improved airflow.
  • SATA power connector for easy installation and effortless cable management.
  • Completed sealed system backed by a 2 year warranty.

Today we are going to look at the Corsair H90 which fits into the middle of the Hydro range, in a similar position to the H80i.  It is designed to compete directly with the new NZXT Kraken X40 (review forthcoming), boasting a 140 mm radiator to improve performance over standard 120 mm models.  We are also going to take another look at the Corsair H110, and see how it compares when cooling an Intel Core i7-3930K processor.

The Corsair Hydro H90 is designed as a high performance cooler for those who only have room for a 140 mm unit in their case.  We look forward to seeing how it compares to the H80i, which boasts a thicker radiator and an extra fan.  There are a number of cases on the market that feature 140 mm rear exhaust fan vents which are ideal candidates for this cooler.

We have already taken an in-depth look at the Corsair H110 over here so we will be focusing on the H90 in this article.

Corsair are widely regarded as the leading enthusiast brand in the ‘all-in-one liquid cooling' market.  They have a wide range of products which cater for a broad spectrum of users.

We were recently impressed by their H100i, but many enthusiasts have since been speculating that the Kraken X60 would offer better cooling performance.  Unfortunately, we don't have the Kraken X60 available for comparison with the H110 today, however we expect to publish a comprehensive review in the coming weeks.
