Over the past year, Netflix has brought quite a few console games to mobile via its Netflix Games service, with the likes of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Oxenfree and more being ported to mobile exclusively for subscribers. In a surprising move, the critically acclaimed rogue-lite Hades is set to be added to the service next year.

As part of the streaming service’s ‘Geeked Week’ Netflix announced that the Supergiant Games-developed Hades “is breaking new ground! The critically acclaimed rogue-like game is coming exclusively to iOS via Netflix next year.”

Additionally, the well-known indie puzzle-platformer ‘Braid’ from Jonathan Blow (of The Witness fame) is also coming to Netflix on mobile, with the company saying “Relive the nostalgia with BRAID: ANNIVERSARY EDITION! If you loved it before, get ready to fall in love again. Coming exclusively to mobile on Netflix.”

Interestingly, based on the wording it seems as though Hades will be exclusive to iOS while Braid will come to both iOS and Android. Regardless, it is cool to see that Hades (and Braid) are coming to mobile platforms – even if it is exclusive to a subscription service.

SuperGiant Games hit it big back in 2020 when the rogue-like title Hades left early access, amassing a great deal of fanfare across the board and winning dozens of awards in the process. Hades II was then announced late last year with a planned early access launch in 2023. This ultimately did not come to be, with SuperGiant Games now offering a renewed Early Access launch window.

Making the announcement via their blog, the team at SuperGiant Games released a development update for Hades II, saying: “Back when we first revealed Hades II at The Game Awards in 2022, we said to expect more information on our plans for Early Access sometime in 2023. It's time we shed some light on those plans!”

They continued, “We now can confirm we're planning for Hades II to launch in Early Access in Q2 2024 on Steam and the Epic Games Store. We'll have more details on the exact date, pricing, and system requirements closer to that time.”

Discussing the reasons as to why Early Access is not arriving this year, the team stated that “Hades II will have at least as much content from day one in Early Access as the original game did back when it launched in Early Access on Steam. And, even though Early Access inherently means a game is not yet complete, we still want to do everything we can to make sure Hades II is worth your while as soon as you can play it in any capacity.”

The team went more in-depth regarding their mentality and approach towards early access (especially with how it compares to Hades 1), but considering how well received the first game was, SuperGiant Games have earned as much time as they need in order to ensure that the sequel is as good as possible.

Yesterday, Microsoft officially announced the next batch of titles for Xbox Game Pass, all of which will land on the service before the end of the month. Unfortunately, some titles have to be cycled out due to expiring agreements. Typically, we see just a handful of titles removed each month, but there is a particularly big exodus scheduled for August.

On the 31st of August, ten titles will be leaving Xbox Game Pass, and much of the list is made up of big, recognisable games. NBA 2K22, which only just joined the service a short while ago, is now leaving the service just in time for the launch of NBA 2K23, which will not be a day-one Game Pass title.

One of 2021's biggest day-one indies for Game Pass, Twelve Minutes, is now leaving the service after a year too. Myst, one of the first Xbox Series X games to feature AMD's FSR technology, is also leaving the service, as well as Supergiant's rogue-like hit, Hades.

The full list of titles leaving Xbox Game Pass on the 31st of August includes:

  • Elite Dangerous (Cloud and Console)
  • Hades (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Myst (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • NBA 2K22 (Cloud and Console)
  • Signs of the Sojourner (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Spiritfarer (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Twelve Minutes (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Two Point Hospital (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • What Remains of Edith Finch (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • World War Z (Cloud, Console, and PC)

While there are some major titles leaving Xbox Game Pass, there are also a lot of good new games on the horizon. Titles like High On Life, Grounded, Scorn, Pentiment, A Plague Tale: Requiem and more are heading to Game Pass in the next few months. In 2023, we will get new pillar titles for the service too, including Bethesda's Starfield and Arkane's Redfall.

KitGuru Says: There are a lot of recognisable names leaving the Game Pass library this month, but there is still plenty left over to play and new additions to the library are just on the horizon.

Hades took many people by surprise when it launched last year (following an early access period). The rogue-like ended up winning many awards, including over 50 game of the year accolades. Though currently the game is only available on Switch and PC, it will soon be coming to both Xbox and PlayStation.

Announced at E3 as part of the Xbox and Bethesda conference – and later further detailed on Supergiant Games' blog – it was confirmed that Hades, the award-winning rogue-like from developer Supergiant Games is coming to Xbox One, Series X|S, PS4 and PS5 on the 13th of August.

What’s more, initially a digital-only release, Hades is set to get a physical release on Xbox and PlayStation which comes with a “32-page full-color character compendium booklet with artwork from the game by Jen Zee” and a digital soundtrack.

Of course, as with most of the games shown off at the Microsoft and Bethesda conference, Hades is coming to Xbox Game Pass day-and-date with its console release, meaning that subscribers can get the game for free.

Hades launched in September 2020 for PC and Switch, becoming the underdog during the game awards season, managing to swoop in with over 50 separate awards – making it the 3rd most awarded game of the year only behind Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II. Hopefully its upcoming PlayStation and Xbox release proves to only elevate Supergiant Games even further. The physical release can be found HERE.

Last night the 2020 Game Awards took place. While many who watched were likely there for the game announcements, an equal number of fans were excitedly waiting to see whether their favourite game won an award. Despite its controversies, The Last of Us Part II managed to not only win Game of the Year, but broke a Game Awards record at the same time.

The Last of Us Part II received 11 nominations in total, making it the game with the most nominations in the show’s history (second place goes to Death Stranding with 9 nominations in 2019). Even more impressive however is the fact that The Last of Us Part II went on to win 7 of those nominations, once again breaking a record for the game with the most wins.

Prior to this, The Game Awards had only awarded a maximum of 4 wins to a single game: Overwatch in 2016, Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, and Disco Elysium in 2019. The awards won by The Last of Us Part II were:

  • Game of the Year
  • Best Game Direction
  • Best Narrative
  • Best Audio design
  • Best Performance (Laura Bailey as Abby)
  • Innovation in Accessibility
  • Best Action/Adventure

Other winners at the awards included Ghost of Tsushima for ‘Best Art Direction’ and ‘Players Choice’; Final Fantasy VII Remake for ‘Best RPG’ and ‘Best Score and Music’ and Hades for ‘Best Indie’ and ‘Best Action Game’. The full list of winners can be found here.

It has been one year since the Epic Games Store first launched, complete with an exclusive games strategy to keep games off of Steam. Now, some of those first timed-exclusivity deals are starting to come to an end, with the first EGS exclusives heading to other platforms.

The Epic Games Store has had a number of big timed exclusives since its launch, some of which caused more controversy than others. Two of the first exclusives, ‘Hades' from Supergiant and ‘Ashen' from AA4 and Annapurna Interactive, are no longer under contract, with both games coming to Steam this week as well as other platforms.

Hades is an early access dungeon crawler, so the game isn't finished yet, although new players jumping on with the Steam release will benefit from a year's worth of content development and various fixes. Meanwhile, Ashen is a full release right out of the gate and launches on Steam with a 20% discount.

Ashen is also available on GOG starting this week. We don't know if Hades will also come to GOG alongside Steam but Supergiant's other games have come to the DRM-free store, so Hades will likely show up there eventually.

KitGuru Says: These are some of the smaller EGS exclusives to date. I'm particularly interested in seeing how Metro Exodus does when that returns to Steam in February.

Supergiant has made some excellent indie games over the years, from Bastion in 2011 to Pyre in 2017. Last year, the team launched a brand new project into early access called ‘Hades’, which many of you might remember as the very first Epic Games Store exclusive. That exclusivity is coming to an end soon though, as a launch date for Steam has now been set.

Hades has players taking on the role of Zagreus, the prince of the underworld. The game is a rogue-like with plenty of dungeons to work through on your quest to escape the underworld and reach Mount Olympus. The game has been in early access on the Epic Games Store since December last year but on the 10th of December this year, the game will launch again, this time on Steam.

The game is not finished yet though, so Hades will remain as part of Steam’s Early Access programme for the time being. Speaking about the launch, Supergiant explains that the team “designed Hades as an Early Access game from the ground up” with the goal of trying to create something in partnership with players.

“By the time Hades launches in Early Access here on Steam, the game structure will be mostly complete, so you'll be able to battle all the way from the lowest reaches of the Underworld up to the surface.”

The timing of the move indicates that the Epic Games Store had a one-year exclusivity deal for Hades, similar to many other games, like Shenmue 3, Phoenix Point and Metro Exodus.

KitGuru Says: I’ve had plenty of fun with all three of Supergiant’s previous games, so I’ll be looking forward to giving Hades a try at some point. By the time the game comes to Steam, a lot of the early access work will have already been done, which may end up working in the game’s favour as a lot of players are bound to be discovering this game for the first time when it comes to Valve’s platform.

Ever since the announcement of Diablo Immortal at Blizzcon, we've all been wondering what state Diablo 4 is in. At points throughout the year, it seemed like a shoe-in for a big end of the year reveal, but that didn't turn out to be the case. Now, multiple sources have come forward to share the story of Diablo 4's development and why it seems to be further behind than others had hoped.

Once again, these sources chose to speak to Kotaku's Jason Schreier under the condition of anonymity. The group of sources explain that the mainline Diablo games are worked on by ‘Team 3' at Blizzard. After shipping Diablo III in 2012, this group spent a good chunk of time fixing the game and then began work on the excellent Reaper of Souls expansion. Plans for a second Diablo III expansion were in place but before Reaper of Souls sales figures had even come in, execs at Blizzard had canceled the second expansion, which left a lot of developers “stunned”. Some left, others stayed but either way, it seemed to be quite the blow to Blizzard's Diablo team.

After that, the team began working on Diablo 4 under the codename ‘Hades', this version of Diablo 4 was in development from 2014 to 2016, under the direction of Josh Mosqueira, who led work on the console versions of Diablo III and later worked on the Reaper of Souls expansion.

Hades was set to be a big shift in Diablo's visual style, moving to an over-the-shoulder camera, rather than being isometric. The tone was very “gothic” and the team aimed to make dungeon crawling more challenging than ever before. However, the game was “not shaping up at all”, so this version of Diablo 4 was ultimately canceled and Josh Mosqueira left Blizzard behind. To buy some extra time while the team planned the next version of Diablo 4, Blizzard put out the Rise of the Necromancer DLC for Diablo 3.

The current version of Diablo 4 is codenamed ‘Fenris' and has been in the works since 2016. The isometric camera angle is back, although there are apparently still some discussions on switching to an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective. The idea with this version of the game is to make it “gross, dark and get rid of anything that was considered cartoony in Diablo III”.

This version of Diablo 4 is still in early development and likely won't be out for a couple more years, if not longer. Aside from being darker, Diablo 4 may take some inspiration from Destiny with ‘light MMO' elements, which would include hub cities with other players, in addition to quest-giving NPCs. This would pave the way for more challenging ‘strike' levels and encourage multiplayer more often. These ideas are still being considered but may not necessarily make it into the final game.

As for the lack of Blizzcon reveal, there is some news on that. Back in January, Blizzard seemed set on announcing Diablo 4 this year. However, by the time May came around, it became clear that the “game wasn't far enough” for a full reveal. Over the summer months, it was assumed that a teaser trailer would still be happening but ultimately, this didn't come to pass.

KitGuru Says: From the sounds of it, cancelling that second Diablo III expansion was quite the mistake, after all, the game did go on to sell over 30 million copies. Diablo 4 is still some ways off but hopefully by the end of next year, we'll know a bit more about it.
