Every so often, a game comes around that leads to much debate and controversy. Back in 2014, that game was Hatred – an isometric shoot ‘em up where the sole purpose of the game was to enact a ‘genocide crusade’ and kill as many innocent civilians as possible. The title, which was published on Steam, was initially removed but later reinstated. The game’s developer, Destructive Creations, now appear to be hinting at the fact that the game may be coming to Switch.

Taking to Twitter, the developer wrote: “Something is going to be released soon. Do you have an idea what will it be?” alongside a picture of a Nintendo Switch placed in front of a screenshot of the aforementioned game.

Hatred received an AO rating from the ESRB upon its initial release on Steam. Traditionally, an AO rating almost guarantees that the game won’t see a console release. As times evolve however, games can have their rating re-evaluated, and in some instances have had these age rating reduced. A similar situation may be taking place here.

As previously mentioned, Hatred garnered a great deal of controversy after it was first revealed. This was mainly due to the story reasons behind the gameplay itself. While games such as GTA feature a great deal of violence, and allow the player to attack and even kill innocents, this behaviour isn’t necessarily endorsed by the game. In Hatred meanwhile, the entire framing of the game is that you play as “a misanthropic mass-killer who begins a ‘genocide crusade’ to kill as many human beings as possible.”

Upon the game’s release, it received near universal ‘hatred’ from both critics and users alike. This was due to a number of reasons. Of course, the game’s themes left a bad taste in many players’ mouths, but the title was also said to be lackluster in the gameplay department too.

It is therefore interesting to see that the game may be seeing a Switch port, especially as Nintendo are commonly regarded as being the most family friendly of the console manufacturers.

Of course, Destructive Creations may simply be using the infamy of Hatred as a marketing ploy in order to increase awareness of some other game that it may be bringing to the console – in some sort of bait and switch. We won’t know what the team has planned until they officially announce it themselves.

KitGuru says: What did you think of hatred? Do you think Nintendo would allow such a game on its console? Do you agree with all the ‘hate’ that the game received? Let us know down below.

Just days before the controversial isometric shooter, Hatred is due to release, Twitch has tightened up its rules on streaming Adult Only ESRB rated games, announcing its new policy over on its official blog. This means that if a game is rated AO by the ESRB in the US, it can't be streamed on Twitch, even if the game received a less harsh rating in other parts of the world.

“Games rated 18+ by other rating systems are fine to stream, so long as they are not rated AO by the ESRB, and they don’t violate the standard language of our RoC and ToS”, the blog post reads.

twitch_logo_purple.0-e1427141695778

However, the blog post does note that ‘Mature' rated games are still fine: “If a game’s US version is rated Adults Only by the ESRB, you should not broadcast that game on Twitch. However, ESRB rated Mature versions of Adults Only titles are permitted for streaming, such as Mature versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy.”

We don't get that many Adult Only games as most developers or publishers try to avoid the extreme rating. However, this does mean that titles like Hatred, Manhunt 2, the initial release of GTA: San Andreas or any of the other games on this short list of AO games, can no longer be broadcast on Twitch.

KitGuru Says: Twitch has plenty of rules on its service, including a dress code for broadcasters on camera, so the fact that it doesn't want extreme AO rated games on its service isn't surprising. However, this does mean that Hatred's advertisement campaign will be limited to YouTube, rather than branching out to Twitch, which is gaining more and more popularity.

One of the more controversial games to be announced over the last year or so, Hatred, has an official release date. The isometric shooter, focusing on slaughtering innocent bystanders, will arrive on Steam on the 1st of June this year.

The game was announced last year and was immediately criticized for its premise. Petitions to stop the game's development cropped up and the game was briefly removed from Steam Greenlight and later reinstated. It is safe to say that Hatred has caused quite a stir.

Hatred has an Adults Only ESRB rating in the US and Canada, making it the first AO rated game to arrive on the Steam platform. The trailer itself introduces the main protagonist, giving a chilling monologue, detailing his plans to take to the streets on a rampage, taking as many innocent lives as possible.

Aside from the premise and the fact that it's an isometric shooter, not much else is known about Hatred but it looks like we will find out more about the game pretty soon.

KitGuru Says: Hatred doesn't seem like my kind of game but due to the controversy surrounding it, it will likely sell quite well for a little while. What do you guys think of Hatred? Will you be trying it out to see what the fuss is about?

Hatred has caused quite a stir since its initial announcement, there have been petitions to stop its development, it was removed and reinstated on Steam Greenlight but the development team is still keen to release the game. Although it may have trouble getting on to consoles as the ESRB ratings board has given the game an ‘Adults Only' rating in the US and Canada.

The developer wrote on its official forum that it would have preferred an M+ rating but insists that fans would not be happy with the game in a cut down state: “Well, I'm not quite convinced why Hatred got AO rating while it lacks any sexual content, but it's still some kind of achievement to have the second game in history getting AO rating for violence and harsh language only. Even if this violence isn't really that bad and this harsh language isn't overused”.

Hatred-600x400

It is very rare for a game to receive an Adults Only rating based on violence and harsh language alone. This does mean that there may be complications trying to bring the game to the Xbox One or PS4.

“I would prefer to get a standard M+ rating, because with AO we will have problems to to get to consoles in the future, but on the other hand I think you guys (our fans) would be disappointed with it”.

The dev team could edit the game's content to try for a lower rating but it doesn't seem like they are going to go down that route.

KitGuru Says: Hatred may end up being a PC only title due to the AO rating, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It will be interesting to see if the game still comes to Steam though as the service currently has no AO rated titles for sale.

That was a quick turnaround. Just days after Valve removed the head-turning title Hatred from Steam due to it being ‘something it wouldn't publish' the controversial title is back on Greenlight and with its popularity, looks likely to get through the process before long.

At its peak, Hatred was the 7th most popular Greenlight game

Hatred has caused quite a stir in the gaming world, as it puts players in the shoes of a psychopathic antagonist who's only goal it seems is to murder as many people as possible. The reason this is problematic in some gamers' eyes, is because you don't have a good reason for killing those people. This is despite the fact that in almost every FPS title, along with a number in other genres, give you very flimsy reasons to be killing the many hundreds of people you do.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytdEYapPXdY']

Others that are against this game suggest it will be used by the anti-gaming lobby to crack down on other games, perhaps in the way the GTA V was banned in some Australian stores following protests from abused sex workers and their supporters.

Fans of the game however point to the fact that games like Manhunt, Postal, Carmageddon and many other titles also offer indiscriminate murder. Hatred might glorify it, but it would be far from the first to do so. It also offers the opportunity to provide an interesting commentary on the mental deficiencies of such a person.

KitGuru Says: This game is brutal and it may not be for everyone, but almost every action game has you slaying hundreds if not thousands of people, often with a very flimsy reason that makes you the ‘good guy'. Hell I've personally cut down 9,000+ peasants and soldiers alike in my latest Mount and Blade playthrough. And sold slaves. It's for entirely selfish reasons too, so why is that ok , but this isn't?

You guys have probably heard of Hatred, the game that centres around mass murder in an isometric view. Upon launching the game's trailer, the developer, Destructive Creations, became an instant talking point, with many throwing up their arms demanding that the game be cancelled.

The game is still in development but it won't be coming to Steam. The title tried to get on to the service via the Greenlight system. However, once this hit the news, Valve was quick to shut it down and ensure that the game wouldn't land on Steam.

“Based on what we've seen on Greenlight we would not publish Hatred on Steam. As such we'll be taking it down,” Valve's Doug Lombardi told Eurogamer.

This is an interesting development as recently, Valve has been largely uninterested in curating its platform, allowing publishers to dump mass amounts of old titles on to Steam all at once.

Additionally, games like Postal are readily available on Valve's platform, which also allow to commit numerous crimes and kill people en mass in numerous ways.

KitGuru Says: Following the initial controversy, it isn't surprising that Valve was quick to remove Hatred from Steam Greenlight, gaming sites would likely cause no end of uproar if the title had been allowed to stay. What do you guys think of this? Was Valve right to do this?

There's often a big problem for games developers when it comes to making a game, especially when it comes to shooters: how do they make it ok to kill hundreds and hundreds of enemies without you being the bad guy? Most of the time the easiest way is to make them zombies, or orcs or devils or evil orc zombie devils, but occasionally they're not. In a new game announced today called Hatred, from developer Destructive Creations, you mow down screaming, fleeing civilians in shooting sprees, for no apparent reason at all.

hatred
The only real difference with this game is he isn't a grizzled, shaved headed space marine.

“Hatred is an isometric shooter with disturbing atmosphere of mass killing, where player take on the role of a cold blood antagonist, who is full of hatred for humanity,” reads the official website. “It’s a horror, but here YOU are the villain.”

The game features open world levels, with a sandbox structure of slaughter, shootouts with the cops and some brutal synch kill animations complete with pleading victims. Have a gander at the trailer below if you're interested to see what it all looks like:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrX7G-1xPLs']

In a somewhat bizarre turn of events, especially for a company like Epic which has built itself on the wholesale slaughter of digital characters, the company behind the game's Unreal Engine has distanced itself from the developers, stating that it doesn't want its logo associated with the trailer.

“Unreal Engine 4 is available to the general public for use ‘for any lawful purpose,’ and we explicitly don’t exert any sort of creative control or censorship over projects. However, the video is using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic, and we’ve asked for the removal of our logo from all marketing associated with this product,” the company said.

For the developer's part, he just thought that including the logo in your video was mandatory when using UE4.

The game's trailer and premise have already caused much division, with some defending the developer's stance on anti-political-correctness in gaming, while others have suggested like many politicians have done about other games over the years, that it's just a murder simulator.

KitGuru Says: It's worth remembering that this is far from the first time games have had you slaughtering innocents, they just tend to wrap it up in a way that makes it technically ok. The Bioshock series has you mowing down mentally ill drug addicts, Call of Duty has you wipe out an airport of civilians to fit in with your new Russian friends, GTA has you mowing down hundreds of police – to suggest this game is that much worse than anything that's come before is hypocritical.

You could even go so far as to say that a game like this is a great criticism of gaming and how it wraps up murder in fun new ways with each outing.
