The popularity of Youtube shows no signs of fading as people share funny, educational and often entertaining videos. The gaming audience has always utilised the platform as it allows them to share integral gaming moments with a wide audience. Similarly, if you get stuck on a game level, the chances are that someone has completed it and uploaded a walk-through guide.

Recording in-game content has never been that straightforward with a wide audience resorting to recording the video with a camera. Many console games do have a ‘theatre mode', or similar, but you can't then save that content to a computer or upload it directly to Youtube.

The Hauppauge HD PVR 2 is the latest solution to this problem, and has the potential to be a popular device with a very wide audience. The Hauppauge HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition records high definition video from either a Sony PlayStation 3 or Microsoft Xbox 360 onto a Windows laptop or desktop PC.

It should allow gamers to make video recordings of their best moments in the latest High Definition formats, as well as giving them the option to upload their favorite game videos to YouTube.

For as long as there have been battles, there has been the ‘telling of the tale'. For the Vikings, it was mead and roast pig around wooden tables while the stories would grow bigger and wilder with each telling. These days, forensically accurate uploads of gaming sequences are the method of choice.

KitGuru speaks with Hauppauge's VP for Sales and Marketing, Yehia Oweiss, about his company's latest push into the gamer market.

Hauppauge is now a regular feature at major events like GamesCom and this piqued our interest, but its roots are elsewhere. We started off by asking Yehia to give us a quick background on his company.

“Founded in 1992, Hauppauge originally manufactured mainboards for Intel”, explained Yehia. “But we soon moved our focus to TV cards and video capture hardware”.

So what's the full extent of Hauppauge's range these days?

“Well, through Hauppauge Computer Works, PCTV Systems and Hauppauge Digital Europe, we design and deliver a number of digital video products”, said Yehia. “Our three main video solutions focuses on digital video streaming, high definition video capture for the gaming market, and live digital TV receivers for mobile and tablet devices such as the iPhone and iPad”.

You mentioned gaming in there Yehia, that seems to be a departure from pure TV and video. What's that all about?

“Our high definition video capture products are designed for gamers, developed from their feedback to us”, he explained. “Hauppauge is now dedicated to this market and events like GamesCom help us stay connected with our key customers”.

What products specifically?

“At GamesCom 2012, we launched the HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition”, said Yehia. “This is a dedicated gaming capture product”.
.
“Every gamer we have spoken with has been really excited by this new development”, he told KitGuru. “It is very easy to install, has HDMI connectivity with pass through at 1080p and the capture quality is stunning”.
.
“Whatever you see in your gameplay, can be recorded and played back with no delay”, he said. “Making output to YouTube both simple and gratifying”.
.
So how big is the market for HD video capture and playback?   Yehia had the data on hand to answer that question.
.
“A recent Neilsen report stated that Brits now watch 18,000 years’ worth of online video a month”. We assume that's not ‘each'.
Yehia continued, “So video touches all of us and Hauppauge is best placed in terms of its video expertise to offer HD video on all platforms – whether that's a mobile phone, tablet TV or any other computer-driven device”.
.
“While our focus here is on gamers, we also have products designed for organisations that want to stream high definition video across the web”, he said. “Perfect for broadcasting live events over the internet”.
.

Hauppauge VP for Sales and Marketing, Yehia Oweiss, next to a diagram that shows the extensive HD capture capabilities of his company's new HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition. Should any clan be without one?

.

KitGuru says: Speaking with Yehia, he seems confident that the future is all about increased participation in video streaming and that Hauppauge offers a high quality, affordable solution to enable that to happen. The promise seems to be ‘Broadcast quality video in an easy to use, consumer-friendly solution'. Just what the Vikings were looking for, surely.

If you own an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 console then today's review product might raise an eyebrow. Have you ever wanted to share video content showcasing your gaming exploits? The Hauppauge HD PVR Gaming Edition records high definition video from either console direct to your computer in compressed H.264 format. This time Hauppauge supply all the cables you need for a complete ‘out of the box' experience.

This product allows the gamer to share video recordings of their gaming sessions and then upload them to Youtube or other video streaming services. Hauppauge say that the videos can be used to ‘discuss tactics' with fellow clan members. Heck, even if you aren't socially active, you can play back the recordings on your own computer.

Hauppauge claim that the HD PVR Gaming Edition records fantastic quality images in 1080i with H.264 compression. The Gaming Edition also features optical audio input, so you can record 5 channel audio directly from the game console.

H.264 is a good codec to use, as it offers excellent image quality while allowing for good compression rates. We have tested this format before and it often only takes one third the storage capacity of the ever popular MPEG 2 format.

The latest version claims to have a ‘real time' video pass through option which means you can watch the game play while recording the video signal directly to the hard drive.

Hauppauge include all the cabling and software to record the video content – all you need is a compatible computer and either a Xbox 360 or Playstation 3.

Hauppauge have been creating a plethora of TV oriented products now for many years and today we are looking at their Colossus video recording card which can capture real time H.264 compressed recordings at resolutions up to 1080i. Is this ideal for capturing video console footage?

Hauppauge currently make several products that can record video such as their USB based HD PVR, an external device which compliments the PCIe card we are testing today.

Colossus features:

  • Record high definition video using H.264 video encoding with digital audio. Colossus is an internal PCI Express board, full height, and runs with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.
  • Includes a built-in high quality hardware H.264 high definition encoder, for high performance, high quality video recordings
  • Record high definition video at up to 1080i resolution. Also records standard definition video. Record at datarates from 1Mbs to 20Mbs.
  • Record your game play in HD (up to 1080i) with component video and digital audio (optical) from Xbox360 or PS3 game consoles.
  • Record your favorite TV programs from HD cable TV and satellite set top boxes. Colossus connects to most HD cable TV and satellite TV receivers with component video and optical digital audio. Stereo audio inputs are supported, too.
  • Burn your video game play or your favorite TV programs onto AVCHD disks in high definition using standard DVD media. These AVCHD disks can be played back on a blu-ray DVD player. Up to 2 hours of HD AVCHD video can be recorded on standard DVD-R disks at 5MBits/sec.
  • Create HD recordings which can be played back on the Xbox 360 and PS3
  • Includes Hauppauge's WinTV v7 TV application for automatic recording of TV programs from cable or satellite set top boxes
  • Includes Arcsoft ShowBiz to record video game play. Burn HD disks or upload video game play in HD to YouTube
  • Colossus has component video plus stereo and digital audio pass through, to allow HD recording and viewing at the same time.
  • NTSC and PAL support
  • HDMI input port included. If you have an un-encrypted HDMI video source, such as a digital SLR, you can record directly from this source.
  • Note: most cable and satellite TV receivers do not support un-encrypted HDMI video.
  • Includes IR blaster and IR receiver/learn cable. Colossus can “learn” your cable TV or satellite remote control and can automatically change the channel on your set top box.

Hauppauge are well known for producing a wide range of TV tuners and accessories for both PC and Mac.  At the Gadget Show Live yesterday, they launched their latest product, the Broadway 2T which lets you stream TV to your wireless enabled device, either over Wi-Fi or over the internet.

The Broadway allows you to redirect your home TV and personal video content to your iPhone, iPad, netbook, notebook or Mac computer anywhere in the world. When mobile, your TV and content is accessed via your web browser. No third party apps or additional purchases are needed.
