First Watch Games is a video game developer that belongs to Hi-Rez Studios, the publisher of Smite and Paladins, and has been working on a new third-person shooter called Rogue Company. To show their progress so far, the team has released a gameplay trailer to give the public a glimpse of Rogue Company.

The first we heard of this game was back in the 5th of September 2019, in a Nintendo Direct episode. In this cross-platform team-based shooter, you play as one of the various mercenaries (Rogues) that are part of a “vigilante force” called Rogue Company. This “company” acts on behalf of governments, doing what they can't.

The game will provide a cross-platform experience between Nintendo, PS4, Xbox One and PC (via Epic Games Store). There will be more than 50 weapons and gadgets to pick and multiple classes to choose from, creating an endless array of choices to play with.

Scott Lussier, the lead game designer at Fire Watch Games and former Halo champion, is working alongside multiple industry veterans to create the debut game from First Watch Games studio. As per Rogue Company's press release, Lussier states that the game “matches a modern, high-style universe with tight, tactical action gameplay” and its main objective is to bring its community together while showing off “their individual style”.

Rogue Company is scheduled for a release in Summer 2020, on all platforms. If you want to learn more about this game or sign up to the alpha, visit its official website.

After significant pressure from the gaming community, Sony finally embraced cross-platform play by allowing Fortnite: Battle Royale and Rocket League to adopt the feature. Not everyone is happy with the lack of progress on this front, with Hi-Rez CEO Stew Chisam believing that the company has been playing favourites.

A few months before Sony jumped on the bandwagon, Microsoft and Nintendo teamed up to allow Xbox One and Switch players to enjoy complete cross-platform play across both consoles. Given that there are many more games that have already embraced the feature on both devices, Chisam asks Sony to “stop playing favourites” by choosing the biggest games out there when all games could benefit from cross-platform play.

Chisam notes that Hi-Rez games such as Paladins saw a 30% decrease in matchmaking wait times, and the quality of these matches were significantly improved thanks to the level spread also being 40% down. Overall, by the company’s own definition, Hi-Rez saw an 80% reduction in “bad” matches.

Just like their predecessors, Smite, Paladins and battle royale game Realm Royale are all “ready to go” for the feature to be enabled on PlayStation 4. Hi-Rez is simply waiting for the thumbs up from Sony. It’s unlikely that Hi-Rez is the only company suffering from the stagnation as Sony continues to test its cross-platform beta with Rocket League.

KitGuru Says: I’d be interested to hear what Sony has to say in response, even though it’s unlikely we will hear from the company without more developers coming forward. Still, at least the company is finally doing something with cross-platform play, even if it is one game at a time. Are there any games you would like to see get the feature?

On the weekend, the FBI conducted a sting in Brookhaven, Georgia that saw 21 men arrested for attempting “to seduce, solicit, lure or entice” children. A 32-year-old Hi-Rez employee was identified to be among the group, promptly seeing the studio dismiss the developer and distance itself from the situation.

Georgia police released a statement in conjunction with the FBI explaining that this was the result of “Operation Interception,” a sting that was months in the making. The goal, according to the press release, “was to arrest persons who communicate with children on-line, have sexually explicit conversations, and then travel to meet them for the purpose of having sex. Additionally, the operation targeted those who are willing to exploit children by purchasing sex with a minor.”

Details are scarce on the arrest, which saw Hi-Rez community specialist Thomas Cheung arrested in a Brookhaven parking garage. Alongside his work on free-to-play online shooter Paladins, Cheung is also known for his presence as a partnered Twitch streamer sporting 34,000 followers. Following the charges, Cheung could potentially face up to $25,000 in fines and 20 years in prison.

SteelSeries immediately dropped its sponsorship of Cheung, and Hi-Rez quickly informed the public that it had relieved him of his position. Hi-Rez CEO Stew Chisam learned of the arrest via local news and couldn’t comment on details pertaining to the case, however he did confirm that “Mr Cheung is no longer employed by Hi-Rez Studios” via a Twitter post.

“As a parent, it is difficult to imagine more disturbing allegations than those laid out in the news reports. We commend the efforts of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and other law enforcement to protect our state’s children and to send a strong message that the behavior targeted in their Operation Interception will not be tolerated in Georgia.”

KitGuru Says: Our thoughts go out to the victims in this situation.
