In February 2021, Super Nintendo World opened in Japan – being the first Nintendo-themed park to do so. That being said, more parks are on their way and we now know when, as it has been officially announced that Super Nintendo World Hollywood  will open in February 2023.

As reported by Deadline, Super Nintendo World will be officially opening in Universal Studios Hollywood on the 17th of February 2023 – almost exactly two years after the opening in Japan.

We have yet to see any footage of the park, however if the Japanese Super Nintendo World is anything to go by it will be richly detailed from top to bottom with countless Nintendo references.

The console manufacturer seems to be going all-in with these parks, as we already know of multiple others on the way, including Super Nintendo World Orlando and Singapore.

So far, no European parks have been announced, though considering the success of the Japanese theme park and the perceived bullishness of Nintendo with this project, hopefully an announcement for Super Nintendo World UK is on its way any day now.

The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), a British run organisation that lobbies and sues to combat piracy, has been dealt a major blow by its biggest contributor. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has cut its funding to the group, reducing its financial support by as much as 50 per cent.

This will have a major impact on FACT in a number of ways. Firstly, having its funding cut by such a large amount will reduce its ability to operate, but it also reduces Hollywood influence. With the axing of MPAA funds, FACT's ties with six major Hollywood studios goes with it.

That could mean FACT will now operate more independently of Hollywood demands, perhaps focusing more on British film interests. It will be interesting to see if it tries to court more funds from organisations like the UK Cinema Association, or perhaps attempts to create greater ties with the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit, PIPCU.

fact

Maybe this will mean FACT stops advertising Hollywood films on its site

From the MPAA's side of things, president of European operations, Stan McCoy told Screen Daily, that the move was designed to bring funding to a more regional level. The MPAA would now focus on supporting larger scale enforcement of copyright, rather than localised, single-nation organisations like FACT.

This move brings an end to 30 years of cooperation between the MPAA and FACT, with the former now looking to add further support to its Europe, Middle-East and Africa office. It did however say in a statement that it wasn't ending its support for British copyright and would continue to enforce its own in the region.

KitGuru Says: This is an interesting move that will likely make FACT far more ineffectual than it already is. It did however give the MPAA a presence in the UK. Without that, it will be interesting to see if Hollywood has less sway with the authorities and politicians.

Earlier this month, pirates rejoiced when screener DVD copies of several movies leaked on to the web shortly after their theatrical release, or in the case of The Hateful Eight, before its official release date. At the time, the release group behind the leaks claimed that they would slowly be putting out a total of 40 movies but it seems that a security breach has put that plan to a halt.

The group responsible for the leaking of these DVD screeners managed to get around 11 movies out on to the web before stopping, including The Hateful Eight, Creed, Revenant and Steve Jobs. It turns out that Hive-CM8 had their identity compromised in comments made on both Kick Ass Torrents and the news site, TorrentFreak. Since this information could help lead to the identity of at least one member of the group (if there are even multiple people involved), the release plan has been put to a stop.

hateful

As TorrentFreak's report points out, this is all backed up by the fact that there has been a lack of new releases over the last few days. Right now, we don't know what other movies were planned for release onto torrent sites and it looks like we may not find out. Following all of this, Hive-CM8 also offered an apology to Quentin Tarantino for releasing The Hateful Eight ahead of its release in cinemas.

The last two movies to leak include The Big Short and Ansomalisa. The group confirmed that there definitely wouldn't be 40 releases as originally planned: “We won’t do another movie before its theatrical release, and we definitely won’t go up to 40 as planned, we think we have done enough already”.

KitGuru Says: Obviously if someone's identity was put at risk, then quitting while you're ahead seems like the smart move, after all, Hollywood's lawyers likely won't just let these leaks slide. That said, I do wonder how many other movies were on the list to be leaked.

Although commercial grade CGI is incredibly expensive to develop, sets aren't cheap either. Some Bollywood directors have been playing around with a middle ground however, whereby they create sets virtually first, before developing them in the real world and adding in the computer generated effects later. Beyond making 360 degree movies, VR looks set to help traditional 2D film production more than anyone quite expected.

makuta

The film this technique was first used on is called Bahhubali: The Beginning, directed by S.S. Rajamouli. Since the film required monstrously large sets with giant chroma-keyed backgrounds, before beginning filming the developers wanted to see what the final result would look like (roughly). So they built a VR film set and were able to judge camera angles and actor blocking before they had even constructed the sets. This made the whole process more efficient and it's hoped it will raise the quality of the final product because of that.

You likely noticed that this video also makes a point of highlighting AMD GPUs and software like Liquid VR. This shows how hard AMD is pushing its virtual reality developments in other directions beyond gaming. It was recently announced that it had teamed up with Dell and Oculus to put AMD graphics cards in “Oculus Ready” systems.

AMD even showed up in our recent look at Kite and Lightning's Neuro Rift demo.

It's the right time to build this sort of VR-centric reputation, since Oculus and Valve/HTC are likely to release their first generation consumer hardware in early 2016. Getting in on the ground floor may give AMD a significant leg up in the early days of VR, which might help it correct its slipping footprint in the consumer add-in card market.

KitGuru Says: I think I've said enough how pumped I am for VR next year. Clearly I'm not the only one.

It seems that Hollywood has completely missed the point once again. MPAA backed anti-piracy initiative, WheretoWatch.com is a tool designed to point consumers towards legal alternatives to piracy but there is a catch, it is only accessible to those in the US, meaning a VPN is required if people elsewhere in the world want to view it.

WheretoWatch was made in an attempt to counter the argument that there are no legal alternatives to piracy for certain shows and movies. As you would expect, the MPAA is urging theaters and customers to spread the word about the site in an effort to give exposure to legal places to watch shows and movies.

wheretowatch1

Unfortunately, there are still millions of people outside of the US who are expected to consume content legally but they often don’t have access to the tools needed. Not only can non-US citizens not subscribe to services like HBO Now (which is actively cutting off VPN using customers), or Hulu Plus but now they can’t even access the database designed to offer legal alternatives to piracy.

Putting a geo-block on something that is designed to help alleviate the piracy problem just seems to be missing the point.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Geo-blocking is usually used to protect a company from legal issues that stem from providing content to an area where it has not purchased the rights to broadcast. However, putting a geo-block on an anti-piracy tool just seems like a bad idea. It’s not like non-US citizens don’t know about the services available in the US already…

One of the biggest releases of 2014 will be the Hollywood extravaganza Jupiter Ascending. With a special effects budget likely to be larger than the GDP of some small countries, you might be wondering what kind of hardware sits in the background to make it all possible. KitGuru got some idea from Super Micro's Dev Tyagi over at CeBIT 2014.

Back toward the end of the Pentium 4's life, there was a move to smaller, simpler, more parallel computing units that came from the Banias development team in Israel. Although clocks and power draw dropped, the overall effect was a significant boost in performance. For 2013, Intel had 5 server CPU launches scheduled and two of them were for Atom-based processors. At CeBIT 2014, Supermicro was showing off the kind of systems you can create when you use a lower wattage CPU and simply pack a huge number of them together into the same chassis.

For those outside the server workspace, when you see ‘U', it means a single unit of space that you would buy/rent in a server farm. How much compute power you can pack into each U that you pay for, determines your costs/profitability.

On that basis, if your processing requirement needs an absolute stack of i86 cores, then Supermicro's 6U 112-node MicroBlade could be interesting. It's an extreme-density, ultra energy-efficient micro server system loaded with Intel Atom C2000 series SoC processors, each of which can have up to 8 cores. This modular Blade architecture is designed to maximises rack utilisation by offering 112 independent power-conserving nodes – with each one dropping as low as 10W.

That means, in a 42U rack, you can enable up to 784 servers.

If you think that's a lot, then you'll be impressed to know that it's also possible to double that density – with 224 Intel Atom-based nodes.

In July 2014, a new Hollywood blockbuster will hit our screens. Jupiter Ascending has a stellar cast – and is a Wachowski twins epic – so special effects are part and parcel of the overall experience.

By continuously innovating – constantly adding in more power per node – the time taken to render a section of film will reduce. Which decreases costs and increases productivity.

“Our latest server innovations are leading the industry for energy efficiency, density, and manageability for maximized performance per watt, per dollar, per square foot,” said Charles Liang, President and CEO of Supermicro. “Our new Intel Atom based platforms including the 6U 112-Node MicroBlade and 3U 24-Node MicroCloud are defining the future of green computing with solutions that support a wide range of workloads in Enterprise, extreme scale-out Data Center, Cloud and SMB applications. Additionally with next generation platforms supporting NVMe, 12Gb/s SAS3 and native 10GbE/40GbE, Supermicro offers the world’s most extensive range of advanced power conserving server, storage and networking solutions on the market”.

“The rate at which we're able to increase the power available within these systems is amazing”, said Dev Tyagi, General Manager at Supermicro (right, below). “The innovation never stops and the systems just keep on getting faster”.

Supermicro's work in this field is absolutely adored by Intel.

Shannon Poulin, Intel vice-president and general manager of Data Center Group marketing told us, “Supermicro is taking maximum advantage of Intel's latest innovations to offer their customers compelling solutions optimised for today’s diverse set of application workloads, space and budgetary requirements”.

But, within any system, you will still have bottlenecks.

Also on the Supermicro stand we caught up with Marius Tudor (left, above), who heads up Strategic Partnerships for a company called Fusion-IO. From what we can tell, Fusion-IO has never seen two components joined together without thinking “Hey, bet we can make that faster by adding memory some memory”.

Marius told us, “Flash memory optimises industry-standard servers to deliver maximum application performance and system efficiency”.

If you're an IT professional and wondering just how much better Fusion-IO can make your world, Marius' company offers a free tool called ioTurbine, which helps you model the performance improvements that you're likely to find by installing various Fusion-IO products around your system installation.

One of the physical products that Marius pointed out was his ioDrive Octal product which can add more than 5TB of memory to a system, using a single PCI Express slot.

Impressive.

Going back to Hollywood, while there's no guaranteeing the plot for Jupiter Ascending, the enormous amount of special effects are likely to shine, rendered with some help from high-end Supermicro kit.

KitGuru says: The enthusiast community tends to focus on single CPU systems where ‘expensive' is anything over £2,000. The kind of technology that Hollywood is using for rendering is absolutely amazing. We can't wait to see the final results when Jupiter Ascending gets released in July.
