KitGuru reported yesterday that Hotmail was giving a lot of people problems, with over 500 pages now of complaints on their support forums.

Microsoft spokeswomen Catherine Brooker said “At this point it appears to be a limited issue, and Microsoft is working with individual users who are impacted. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers.”

It appears that this issue has actually affected 17,355 user accounts and has stated that the problem has now been solved. The problem appeared quite serious as users caw their sent messages, inbox and folders all disappear.

“Customers impacted temporarily lost the contents of their mailbox through the course of mailbox load balancing between servers,” Microsoft's Chris Jones said. “We identified the root cause and restored mail to the impacted accounts as of yesterday evening, January 2nd.” He also said they would “fully investigate the cause and will take steps to prevent this from happening again. We're very sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused to you, our customers and partners.”

Microsoft have since restored emails to those who had been affected.

Kitguru says: Not quite as bad a problem as first anticipated.

Microsoft seem to be involved in a New Year disaster, with their forum containing over 476 pages of complaints about lost and deleted emails which date back to early November.

Many users are complaining that the majority of email in their inboxes was sent to their deleted mail folders instread. It is hard to judge how widespread and severe this problem is, but if their forums are anything to go by, it looks to be pretty bad indeed. The free Hotmail service is the world's most used service with over 360 million users globally, according to ComScore Inc.

Windows Live Support technicians have had a rather unpleasant start to the year and they have been interacting with the public in many threads saying that the matter is being treated very seriously and they are working on a fix.

“At this point it appears to be a limited issue, and Microsoft is working with individual users who are impacted. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers,” Microsoft spokeswoman Catherine Brooker said in statement.

KitGuru says: If this is a limited issue with over 476 pages of complaints posted in a few days, then we would hate to see a widespread issue!
