Earlier in the month specifications for the upcoming One X+ from HTC were leaked, today the same device has been confirmed by images of the front and rear. Aesthetically, the upcoming device looks to the same as the current One X; retaining the same polycarbonate plastic.

Under the plastic body are where the changes are, the most noticeable one will be the presence of a 1.6 GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 AP37 chipset and either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage. Much like its predecessor a MicroSD slot is not expected. There will also be 1 GB of RAM and it will launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and HTC's Sense interface on board.

No release dates have been leaked but earlier leaks have shown it will be available from O2 in the United Kingdom and on T-Mobile across the Atlantic.

KitGuru says: The One X+ should be a solid interim flagship Android for the Taiwanese company.

When we first reviewed HTC's flagship Android smartphone, the One X back in June one of our main concerns was the software. This has since been fixed to a degree and now the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is tipped for an October release.

The LTE equipped One XL and the as yet unreleased One X+ with a faster clocked Tegra 3 chipset will also receive Jelly Bean either in October or upon launch. International and unlocked devices will be the first to get the update to the latest version of Android. HTC hopes to work with carriers so that these tied devices will get the update before Christmas. Some of the main features include a smoother user interface and Google Now. HTC's Sense UI will still be in full effect with its own additions, although it is unknown what modifications will be made with the move to Jelly Bean.

For now, One S owners and those with other older devices such as the Sensation are currently in the dark regarding a Android 4.1 update.

KitGuru says: Prompt software updates are one of the most important criteria in order to gain loyal customers.

Specifications of the HTC One X+ have been leaked by a reliable member of the XDA-Developers community, Football. If his information is correct, then the updated One X+ model will be a modest upgrade over the current One X flagship.

It will include a slightly higher clocked NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor running at 1.6 GHz, with the ability to boost to 1.7 GHz for lightly threaded operations. It will also supposedly run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 4.5. Other specifications will likely stay the same as the current model, including a 4.7 inch 720p display, 32 GB of non-expandable storage, 1 GB of RAM and the same uni-body polycarbonate design.

The One X+ will likely be an interim Android flagship until next generation devices are announced early next year. We should find out more about HTC's One X+ at the company's press conference on September 12.

KitGuru says: The One X+ appears to be a nice interim flagship for HTC.

A couple of months ago we revealed that HTC had plans to update its flagship One X Android smartphone to Android 4.0.4. At the time we expected the update to roll out within a fortnight but for whatever reasons it was pushed back and returns with many speed improvements.

Improvements made in the new OTA update includes a better browsing experience with the addition of an easily accessible tab button, more camera features such as continuous autofocus. One of the main improvements is that you can now prevent the menu button from appearing at the bottom of the display, which would consume a noticeable percentage of area. Instead it can be mapped to the recent applications key.

Users are also reporting improved battery life and a much smoother user interface. The firmware version is 2.17.401.2 and is currently rolling out to unlocked, international variants of HTC's One X.

KitGuru says: From the sounds of it, this update closes the gap between itself and Samsung's Galaxy S III.

Just in case you've been wondering whether or not HTC's flagship has been abandoned entirely, it hasn't. The HTC One X, One S, as well as the American LTE version, the One XL will get the update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at some stage.

The HTC One X, XL and S will be updated to Android 4.1.

Here is the full statement from HTC's Jeff Gordon:

“We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android. At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean.”

There is a One series device missing from that list, the lower-end One V. Our guess is that the One V will get updated as well, hopefully along with many of HTC's other devices after their three leading smartphones have been dealt with. Also missing is a estimated time of arrival, but chances are the One X and its closest siblings will get a taste of Jelly Bean in October or November.

KitGuru says: It's time to Samsung, Sony, Motorola and LG to make software update promises.

More than one owner of the HTC One X has noticed a perculiar bug – one that is in a way opposite to Apple's ‘Atennagate' issue. Wi-Fi has been problematic for some users, and they have discovered a fix by simply squeezing the body of the phone in a certain place. The fault has presumably been caused by loose Wi-Fi antennae connections within the phone itself, so no quick software fixes are possible for HTC.

Instead of downplaying the whole incident, HTC have admitted there is indeed a fault in some units of the international (Tegra 3 powered) One X. US variants and the One XL are unaffected.

“After investigating isolated reports of WiFi connectivity issues in the HTC One X, we have identified a fix that strengthens the area of the phone around the WiFi antennae connection points. While many customers have not experienced any problems with signal strength, we have taken immediate steps to implement a solution in our production process to prevent this issue from happening in the future”

So there you have it, HTC have fixed the issue in their production line and are advising any users that are encountering Wi-Fi issues to contact their customer support team or return the phone to the place of purchase.

KitGuru says: An issue that perhaps shouldn't have been there originally but has been dealt with professionally. Good job HTC.

Our review of HTC's One X went live earlier in the week and we found it to be a very nice phone but was lacking in a few areas. HTC is hoping to remedy this and in the process close the gap between their own flagship and Samsung's Galaxy S III with a upcoming firmware update.

An upcoming HTC One X update should put it a lot closer to the Samsung Galaxy S III

A test version of the firmware has been leaked to a ROM developer, XDA user Football, and they have baked up a ROM based on the firmware. The new update will be 2.05.401.2, a noticeable update (in terms of numbers at worst) over the current 1.29.401.11. The Android version will also be updated to Android 4.0.4, which will by default include some stability improvements. Updated kernels, radios and software drivers are also bundled in.

Early adopters of the aforementioned ROM have been impressed. Users are reporting a better web browsing experience, tweaked auto brightness settings, a smoother user interface and faster unlock speeds. Gaming performance appears to have been improved, along with battery life whilst gaming. It is not clear yet if overall battery life has been improved.

There is no official word on when the update will be released to unlocked devices but hopefully it should be within the next fortnight.

KitGuru says: We mentioned in our review that HTC appear dedicated to software updates, it should now read that they are indeed dedicated to software updates.

HTC took the fast track to smartphone fame with phones like the HD2 and the Desire family, but the Taiwanese company lost its way a bit last year. Now they hope to get back on top with a trio of Android 4.0 powered smartphones, known as the One series. What we are looking at today is the international version of HTC’s flagship One X (not to be confused with the Qualcomm powered One XL). Can the One X put HTC back on top?

The HTC One X and its One series brothers are the revival of a more streamlined product strategy in order to offer better final products and post-launch software support. Last year at Mobile World Congress HTC unveiled five Android powered smartphones, a lineup that did not include the Sensation, their 2011 flagship device. Last year, HTC went ahead and added to what Android is most often negatively known for; a fragmented ecosystem.

Earlier this year at Mobile World Congress the Taiwanese company offered just three phones; the HTC One X, One S and One V. Three phones with three various target markets and demographics. HTC are primarily dedicated to these three phones (excluding regional variants) from here on out.

Speaking of firmware, the One X is running the latest and greatest Android iteration, Ice Cream Sandwich. As you might expect HTC Sense is also present and version 4.0 of HTC’s user interface is a welcome upgrade over previous versions.

Hardware wise, the One X is the first smartphone to become available with Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chipset inside. The 4.7 inch display is packing some serious pixels with a 1280 x 720 display. All of this and much more fits neatly into a polycarbonate shell that is just 8.9mm thin, weighing just 130 grams.

Key Specifications:

  • 4.7 inch Super IPS LCD 2 1280×720 capacitive touchscreen display
  • Display protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2
  • Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC
  • 1.5 GHz quad core Cortex-A9 processor
  • ULP Geforce GPU
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 32 GB of internal storage – no MicroSD slot
  • 8 MP rear camera with 1080p video recording
  • 1.3 MP front facing webcam
  • HTC ImageSense
  • Quad band 3G (850/900/1900/2100)
  • WLAN 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • NFC
  • 1800 mAh Li-Po battery
  • Weighs 130 grams
  • Just 8.9mm thin, full dimensions are 134.4 x 69.9 x 8.9mm

The Samsung Galaxy S III launched in Europe and Asia just over a week ago amidst a fair amount of hype – and for the most part it has been largely justified. Right now, the only thing standing in the way of Samsung's latest Galaxy flagship is HTC's own One X smartphone and to play sales into the hands of HTC, they have dished out some sales pitch information favouring the One X ever so slightly.

First off, HTC tells sales reps that many things are better than the Galaxy for rather odd reasons. Strangely a 1.5 GHz quad core processor sounds better than a 1.4 GHz quad core processor right? Well it is until you learn that the Exynos 4412 in the Galaxy pulls ahead of the NVIDIA chip in the One X. We'll give HTC the fact that their camera has better low light performance but in reality the Samsung has a higher burst capture frame rate. Furthermore, both phones have a polycarbonate shell yet for some reason HTC calls the Galaxy's materials “plastic” and its design “disappointing”. Contrary, the HTC design is “world acclaimed”. Slight exaggerations there HTC.

The next image shows some countering points in some of the areas where the Galaxy is a better phone including the battery. Apparently the One X's battery can “easily” last a full day, something I agree with if you're a fairly light user. We'll let the image do the rest of the talking and some of the points HTC's marketing team brings up are very interesting.

KitGuru says: At the end of the day you really can't go wrong with either phone, trust me, I have both of them sitting on my desk as you read this.

There has been much confusion in enthusiast circles recently when it appeared that multitasking was ‘broken' (or modified) on HTC's Sense 4.0 user interface, which is present on their latest Android smartphones. Instead of ‘true' Windows-like multitasking that is present on stock Android 4.0, HTC has tweaked Sense so it has a rather aggressive memory management system.

This means that instead of seeing the real-time running of a background application you are isntead seeing a frozen screenshot of it. Going into it will then restart the application – sometimes from scratch – although some users and reporting improvements with the latest update (1.29.xxx.11). It can be better explained by watching this video.

According to HTC multitasking is working as designed in Sense 4.0

“HTC is aware of some questions in the enthusiast community about how the HTC One X handles multitasking and memory management for background apps. We value the community's input and are always looking for ways to enhance customers' experience with our devices. That said, right now multitasking is operating normally according to our custom memory management specifications which balance core ICS features with a consistent HTC Sense experience.”

So there you have it, multitasking on phones such as the HTC One X and One S is working as designed. Something that is bound to frustrate the elite phone geeks yet not even cause a rise of the eyebrows from others.

KitGuru says: Be sure to look out for our own HTC One X review coming in the next couple of weeks!

It was only a few short years ago that we had mobile phones that would last for weeks on end without life support enabled. More recently in the smartphone era you are expected to live with near-daily charges. While claims of improving not just smartphone battery life but also battery technology are few and far between, HTC claims that they “put a great deal of effort into improving overall device performance and battery life.”

HTC is claiming some big battery boosts with its latest One series compared to its previous flagship

With the HTC One series HTC has investigated many aspects of the phone including the chipset, display and the operating system to ensure the most efficient use of both power and data consumption. They claim that compared against the former flagship Sensation handset, HTC has increased talk time by 147%, MP3 playback time by 105%, video playback time by 39% and web browsing time by 23%.

As a result of a internal motivator between engineering teams called the Battery Stamina Boost Project the 1800 mAh battery in the HTC One X will now last longer than ever due to hardware and software optimisations. However, this is something I'm not seeing in the real world yet.

KitGuru says: No matter what HTC claims, we reckon lithium based batteries have to be replaced by a more advanced technology before consumers start to see remaining battery life measured in days rather than hours.

HTC has been doing its fair part of market research, one of the topics being whether customers prefer thin smartphones or smartphones that compromise a couple of millimetres here and there for better battery life. At the end of the research it was discovered that thinner, more aesthetically pleasing phones were preferred. Furthermore, HTC has apparently since scrapped plans for 3000 mAh capacity or more smartphones from its roadmap. As comparison, an average smartphone battery capacity today is between 1500 and 1800 mAh.

HTC's One X has both a larger battery and a thinner waistline than its predecessors

But all hope is not lost yet for fans of HTC's smartphones who also want better battery life, they are investing in new battery technologies and better power management within the software. HTC's vice president of product strategy, Bjorn Kilburn, did not forget to point out that the One X flagship has a larger battery while being thinner than the HTC Sensation.

KitGuru says: Hardware is soon approaching its limits in a smartphone, bring on the software optimisations.
