After numerous leaks in the past, Huawei has made official its first Windows Phone 8 offering on the first day of CES. The low to mid range device should offer Huawei's traditional value for money retail pricing. The device itself will be available in China and Russia this month before spreading to Europe, North America and other markets.

The Ascend W1 has a good enough Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor humming along at 1.2 GHz combined with the Adreno 305 GPU and 512 MB of memory to power the 4 inch WVGA display. While Windows Phone 8 does bring with it support for higher resolutions Huawei has skipped on a better panel in the price of cost cutting.

Internal storage is rather limited at 4 GB, of which roughly half will be open to the user. Fortunately there is a microSD slot with support for cards up to 32 GB in size. The rear camera is a modest 5 MP and for a cheaper device it's good to see Huawei including a 0.3 MP webcam. The battery is rather beefy for a smaller device at 1950 mAh and Huawei claims it has best-in-class battery life.

KitGuru says: While it won't shatter sales record, those looking for an entry level smartphone will find solitude in the Huawei Ascend W1.

We saw got a glimpse of an affordable Windows Phone 8 handset from Huawei back in October dubbed the Ascend W1 and now TechBlog.gr have got their hands on the device.

The unit they had some hands on with is in blue, as per previous leaks, but it would be fairly safe to assume that Huawei will offer the device in other colours as well. Aside, the HTC and Nokia design inspirations are rather obvious but regardless, it looks like a neat affordable phone.

Specifications are said to include a 4 inch, WVGA display, a 1.2 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Krait processor, a 5 MP camera with LED flash, NFC and a 2000 mAh battery.

TechBlog suggests that the Huawei Ascend W1's price “will not exceed $200” and is believable given Huawei's past devices and the entry level nature of the phone.

KitGuru says: If you're looking into the Windows Phone platform but aren't willing to shell out for a flagship, this will definitely be a device to consider once it launches.

Huawei was set to unveil their Windows Phone 8 line-up last month but was later delayed for reasons unknown. Fortunately, announcement delays don't affect leaks of rumoured devices and the Huawei Ascend W1 has been given that treatment.

Straight away the pictures of the Ascend W1 reveal that Huawei's engineers have had some obvious design inspirations from HTC and Nokia. HTC's famous camera bulge from the One X is present and so is Nokia's curvy style and cyan blue colour scheme.

Reported specifications for the Ascend W1 include a 4 inch WVGA display, 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB of memory a 2000 mAh battery and a variety of colours. One thing to note is the strange location of the Micro USB slot in the above picture. It has been thought for a while the port would be standardised in the middle for maximum accessory compatibility.

KitGuru says: Huawei are a growing force in the smartphone arena, and regardless of design inspiration the Ascend W1 looks to be a strong competitor if it also combined Huawei's typically low asking prices.

Huawei have made some sucessful value orientated Android smartphones in recent years and as they make a move to the high-end, they are about to unveil two Windows Phone 8 devices.

On a media event on September 25th the Chinese company is set to unveil the Ascend W1 and Ascend W2. The W1 is set to take on the Nokia Lumia 820 and HTC 8S, while the Ascend W2 will compete with the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X. No detailed specifications are known about either device at this time.

Both devices are expected to be made available in the November-December period in the United States, Europe and China.

KitGuru says: Huawei are traditionally known for undercutting the competition while delivering solid products, their Windows Phone devices should be no different.
