It seems that the Chinese tech giant, Huawei, also wants a piece of the gaming market. According to the latest reports, Huawei is developing new gaming notebooks and a gaming console to rival Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

As per the news shared on Weibo by TomatoPrince (via HuaweiCentral), Huawei should launch the gaming laptops before the alleged gaming console (aka MateStation). This isn't the first time the company is working on gaming laptops since it already released one through its subsidiary back in 2020, the Honor Hunter V700. Since Honor has been sold to Shenzhen Zhixin New Information Technology, the new gaming laptop would be the first to use Huawei's name. Moreover, the company released a console in 2014 named Tron, which was powered by a Tegra 4 processor and used Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS.

Considering Huawei's massive customer base and intellectual property, developing a new console should be within its reach. Huawei also already has a gaming platform called GameCenter, which is based on Huawei Media Services for Android.

The leaker hasn't revealed a release date for the gaming laptops nor for the MateStation.

The US government has added Xiaomi to its list of companies with alleged connections to the Chinese military. Unlike Huawei, Xiaomi hasn't been added to the Entity List, meaning the company will still be allowed to use US technology and components within its products.

According to CNBC, Xiaomi is on the US blacklist of “Communist Chinese military companies” (now with nine companies listed), meaning American investors will be prohibited to buy or invest in the company starting November 11th, 2021.

The US Department of Defense (DOD) stated that it “is determined to highlight and counter the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) Military-Civil Fusion development strategy”. According to the DOD, these companies are responsible for modernising the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) by giving them access to various technologies. The blacklist was initially released in June 2020 and includes other Chinese companies such as Huawei and SMIC.

Xiaomi has already denied its ties with the Chinese military and that it will “take the appropriate course of actions to protect the interests of the Company and its shareholders”.

Now ranking as the third largest global phone manufacturer, Xiaomi has expanded its business into other areas, including TVs, vacuum cleaners, smart home products, and more. The company's stock value had already dropped by over 10% on the Hong Kong market this past Friday as a result of this news.

KitGuru says: Do you think Xiaomi will suffer the same fate as Huawei? What would happen to Xiaomi if it couldn't have access to US technologies such as Google Android?

A couple of months ago, it was reported that TSMC would soon stop shipping wafers to Huawei following new rule changes in the US. New orders were halted at the time and now, new information indicates that Huawei will no longer receive shipments from TSMC in September.

Back in May it was reported that TSMC had halted new orders from Huawei as US rules changed. However, TSMC is planning to further cut down on its trade with Huawei by stopping its shipments to the company after the 14th of September. The underlying reason behind the halted trade with Huawei is reported (by NIKKEI) to be that TSMC wants to fully comply with the new U.S. regulations.

Roughly 14% of TSMC’s revenue used to be based on products that the company sold to Huawei. Even though TSMC is looking to lose a sizeable portion of its income the company hasn't been idle. TSMC is planing to build and operate a fab in the United States and the company is also expected to manufacture Apple Silicon chips for future Macs, which will probably more than make up for the lost revenue.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru says: This was somewhat expected following the news in May. TSMC may be able to sell to Huawei again in the future, but for now, it looks like Huawei will need to switch to other chip fabricators.

A Huawei-powered desktop has surfaced online, featuring an 8-core 7nm Kunpeng 920 processor running at 2.6 GHz across eight cores.

Most desktops today are built using a CPU that is based either on the x86 or the x64 architecture. However, Huawei has chosen to go down a different path with the introduction of its latest desktop. The Kunpeng 920 CPU found in Huawei's desktop is built using the ARM v8-architecture and as a result cannot run current versions of Windows and macOS. Instead, the company opts to use a Chinese distribution of Linux, called Unity Operating System (UOS), which is a 64-bit operating system.

The Kunpeng 920 processor was announced back in early 2019 and the CPU has been aimed at the server market – being equipped with up to 64-cores. The introduction of the processor in a desktop marks a small step for the CPU market as a whole, but a big leap forward for the Chinese market. China has previously announced its plan to become independent of foreign chipmakers within the next couple of years, something that the country slowly is making progress in.

Major semiconductor companies spend billions upon billions of dollars each year and are dependent on massive orders to stay profitable. With that in mind, the halting of all new orders from Huawei, one of the world's biggest smartphone companies, could have had an impact on TSMC's bottom line. As it turns out though, all is well, as the company is projected to achieve revenue growth in 2021.

In May of this year, TSMC announced plans to build and operate a factory on US soil. This project alone is expected to come at a cost of $12 billion, so it goes without saying that the company is keen on finding different streams of revenue. One of those streams of revenue has been Hi-Silicon, a Chinese fabless semiconductor company fully owned by Huawei. However, the trade war between the US and China and the rising tensions has forced TSMC to halt new orders from Huawei.

As reported by EEtimes (via wccftech), “roughly 14% of TSMC's revenue is based on the products that the company sells to Huawei”. However, even if TSMC is expected to get $0 of revenue from Huawei in 2021 the company is still estimated to grow 6% YoY, according to analysis from Credit Suisse. The predicted growth is mainly based on TSMC receiving increasing orders from its other partners, which includes the likes of Apple, AMD, Qualcomm, Nvidia and more.

KitGuru Says: TSMC is in a strong position thanks to its lucrative client list, although we do wonder how much revenue growth would have been predicted if orders from Huawei were still on-going.

Tensions between the US and Huawei can be traced back to at least early 2018, and resulted in the company being blacklisted in the US. However, the UK allowed Huawei to continue to sell its 5G infrastructure domestically, albeit with some limitations. Now it looks like the UK is preparing to completely ‘phase out' Huawei 5G tech by 2023.

According to the Financial Times, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reportedly been under pressure from the US the past few months to remove Huawei 5G infrastructure in the UK. Now, the Prime Minister is thought to have started the preparations for phasing out Huawei 5G tech – with the main reason believed to be security concerns.

Boris Johnson also has the backing of UK’s Conservative party that has pushed for the removal of Huawei technology from the UK’s 5G infrastructure by 2023. Earlier this month the Trump administration also announced that it has extended its ‘Huawei ban' through May 2021.

Not everyone agrees with the move, however, as Vodafone previously stated ditching Huawei could result in the UK's 5G rollout being delayed. According to Scott Petty, Vodafone CTO, “The cost of doing that runs into the hundreds of millions and will dramatically affect our 5G business case,” and Vodafone “would have to slow down the deployment of 5G very significantly.”

The trade dispute between the US and China is continuing this week, with reports saying that TSMC has stopped taking new orders from Huawei as the US attempts to limit chip supplies.

The US government announced last Friday that semiconductors making chips abroad with U.S. technology would require licenses for sales to Huawei. As reported by Nikkei (via Reuters), this has apparently forced TSMC to halt new orders from one of the world's largest smartphone companies.

Huawei already had orders in place with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company prior to the latest restrictions from the US government, so those supplies will not be impacted.

TSMC is of course, one of the world's biggest chip makers, with a hefty client list consisting of Apple, AMD, Nvidia, Huawei and more. This news comes shortly after the announcement that TSMC will be opening up a new fabrication plant in Arizona, USA.

KitGuru Says: The timing of this raises some eyebrows, as TSMC will expand operations to the United States. Of course, a license to sell to Huawei in the future could still be granted, it will just require some extra paperwork and red tape.

China has shown clear interest in minimising its reliance on foreign technology and as a part of that goal, the Chinese chip maker SMIC has started mass-producing the Huawei Kirin 710A chip.

As per Global Times, the Kirin 710A chip produced by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) has reached an important milestone. SMIC's production of Kirin 710A is China's first domestically produced chip with independent intellectual property rights, meaning that all the groundwork leading to production of said chip has taken place in China.

According to Sun Yanbiao, head of Shenzhen-based research firm N1mobile, “the successful mass production benefits Huawei, as using chips provided by a manufacturer located in the Chinese mainland could help it reduce its reliance on Taiwan-based semiconductor maker TSMC, which will cushion shocks from China-US trade conflicts.”

The domestically produced Kirin 710A comes as good news for Huawei, SMIC, and perhaps even more so for China. A big proportion of devices manufactured in China uses chips that have been produced by Taiwanese giant, TSMC. However, in the current political climate – with the trade war raging between China and the US –  the Chinese government is investing heavily into manufacturing technology to achieve foreign chip independence.

When thinking of operating systems for desktops one usually comes to think of Windows, Linux or macOS. However, Huawei is looking to change that with it's planned entry to the PC market with its own operating system- HarmonyOS 2.0.

The first iteration of Huawei's HarmonyOS was introduced at the Huawei Developer Conference 2019. Despite being introduced a year ago, the operating system still hasn't debuted to the Chinese PC market. However, that is expected to change soon with HarmonyOS 2.0.

In 2019, Huawei released a roadmap for HarmonyOS. On the presentation of HarmonyOS 2.0 the words “创新国产PC, 手表 and 车机” appear – which can be translated to domestically manufactured PCs, watches and cars. It can therefore be predicted that Huawei is planning a wide domestic roll out to these products within 2020.

It's still unknown what functions Huawei's OS will bring, or whether it will be available outside of China.

Mobile companies having their own credit cards is not a new concept – Apple released its own card a little over a year ago and says its card “completely rethinks everything about the credit card”. Now Huawei wants to follow suit and has announced its plans to release its own credit card.

Huawei was founded 33 years ago in Shenzhen, China. Since then, the company has grown to have a yearly revenue of more than $100 billion and markets its products and services in more than 170 countries. Huawei is – in the same way as many other companies – constantly looking into new ways of growing its business. The company now offers phones, laptops and servers – just to mention a few examples.

The Chinese based company is now looking to expand into the credit card venue. According to reports from Engadget, Richard Yu, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO, “unveiled the Huawei Card at the company's Chinese P40 launch event”.

There is still much that isn't known about the card from Huawei. But there are some details that have been uncovered so far. The card will be “both a physical and virtual card” and will be backed by UnionPay, China's equivalent to Visa and Mastercard. Engaget also reports that “There's no first-year annual fee” and that some “travel benefits” will be included – meaning that users who spend above a given amount will gain access to lounges at train stations and airports.

There is no set release date yet, so those who are interested in the card might have to wait a while before being able to get their hands on it.

However, Huawei announced that due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak the company had decided to take the curtains off the P40 and P40 Pro at an online-only event on March 26th. That day has come and gone, with Huawei unveiling their P40 series of phones.

Huawei has finally revealed its P40 series of phones. Many improvements have been made since the release of Huawei's P30 series. On the list on of upgrades made is 5G support, a new Kirin processor, better (and more cameras) and a wider range of apps outside of Google Play Store.

Right of the bat it's easy to see – on the picture displayed above – that Huawei likes screens that cover the whole front of the phone – with the new P40 series of phones being no exception. The screen is of the AMOLED variety, with the P40 shipping with a 6.1″ 1080×2340 display and the P40 Pro getting a slightly larger 6.58″ 1200×2640 display.

One of the things that Huawei emphasises with the new phones is the cameras. The P40 comes with three cameras, where the P40 Pro comes with five. The company makes a point of comparing the sensor size in its P40 phones with the ones of its competitors – saying that the sensor in its new phones takes in more light, which leads to better pictures.

The processor of the new phones is a Kirin 990 5G and is produced using TSMC's enhanced 7nm+ EUV process. The chip can boast about having eight cores and also sports a lower power consumption compared to some of its competitors.

One of the big questions about Huawei's new phones is how the company is going to tackle its exclusion from Google Play Store. Huawei is working hard to make up for it by enhancing its on AppGallery. However, it remains to be seen if it's enough to convince costumers to opt for a phone from the new P40 series.

Huawei was expected to unveil the P40 series of phones at a global launch event in Paris. But due to the coronavirus outbreak, the launch event was cancelled, making Huawei the latest in a long line of companies – including Facebook, Google and Nvidia – to cancel events. Now Huawei is expected to take the curtains off the P40 and P40 Pro at an online-only event that is going to take place on March 26th.

The announcement was made on Huawei's official Twitter account and reported by wccftech. In the tweet Huawei gives the link to where you can take part in the online-exclusive reveal (HERE).

According to wccftech, we can expect the phones to use the ‘Kirin 990 chipset that will support 5G, better cameras, battery and display.” This is in line with what Huawei's competitors like Samsung have put their focus on for their recent phone models. It seems like 5G, more cameras and better displays with higher refresh rates are becoming an industry standard in the higher-end segments of the phone market.

Huawei is still opting to ship their devices with Android, but they will do so without any Google services. This means that apps like Google Play Store and Maps – to mention a few – are not going to be available on the phones.

The trade war between the US and China has been going on since 2018 and has affected Chinese and US companies alike. One Chinese company that has been targeted in particular is Huawei. While the US decision to blacklist Huawei didn't seem to put too much of a dent in the company's sales last year, as it reported growth during 2019, this looks set to change in 2020.

Now, according to The Information, sources claim that Huawei is predicting its smartphone sales will drop 20% this year as a result of the US ban forbidding partnerships with Google and other American firms. While Huawei had a great 2019 with over 25% growth and 240 million shipped phones, it now expects to sell “only” 190 million to 200 million phones in 2020.

The delayed decline can partly be explained by the annual phone cycle. Huawei is able to continue selling its P30 series and other phones that had already been shipped to the US before the ban went into effect, so those models do have Google services. But those devices are now starting to be replaced – the P40 Pro is being announced on March 26th. Google pulling Huawei's Android license makes Huawei's phones a tougher sell in Europe and other regions where many users are used to Google apps, even if there are alternatives like Huawei's AppGallery.

Huawei is still showing growth in China and other regions, but it could now face a tough time when expanding into Europe and the US.

Huawei has launched a new range of ultra-light MateBook D laptops aimed towards young customers. The series includes two new 14-inch and 15.6-inch devices that offer a revolutionary cross-platform experience.

The Huawei MateBook D series includes a range of new features such as support for multi-screen collaboration and an ultra-slim bezel housing a FullView Display, allowing Huawei to squeeze a large display into a small and portable package. The MateBook D series offer 84 per cent and 87 per cent screen to body ratio, thanks to the ultra-slim bezel measuring just 4.8mm and 5.3mm in the 14-inch and 15.6-inch models respectively.

A lightweight chassis features streamlined curves for a sleek looking appearance. The adoption of thin bezels and recessed cameras has allowed Huawei to shrink the form factor of a laptop. Dimensions of just 357.8×229.9×16.9mm (15.6”) and 322.5mm x214.8mm x15.9mm (14”) makes the MateBook D series one of the slimmest and lightest laptops available in this price range.

Huawei’s new MateBook D series features Full HD (1920×1080) resolution IPS displays, with a wide 178 degree viewing angle. The new MateBook D series is equipped with powerful processors too, the AMD edition includes a Ryzen 3500U CPU with AMD Radeon Vega 8 embedded graphics. All this is cooled by Huawei’s Fin Fan, with new S-shaped fan blades for optimal airflow and improved cooling.

Charging power is catered for via a multi-purpose 65W USB Type-C charger that supports other Huawei USB Type-C port equipped devices. The MateBook D series sports 8GB DDR4 RAM and is available with either 256GB (D 15) or 512GB (D 14) Storage. In terms of connectivity, the MateBook D includes 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB 3.0 and 2.0 Type-A ports, a single USB Type-C port and HDMI out.

The Huawei MateBook D series is set to launch on 21st February with the 14-inch, 512GB space grey version priced at £649.99 and the 15.6-inch 256GB version at £599.99.

Following on from its successful crowdfunding projects Infinity UNO and X-Connect cables, Chargeasap has announced its latest innovation. The Flash powerbank from Chargeasap is now on Indegogo with pledges starting from £107 for early birds and £115 subsequently.

The 60-day campaign will run until 27th March with units expected to start shipping from April 2020. The Chargeasap Flash powerbank features 20,000mAh batteries and is capable of charging up to four devices simultaneously, with a total of 150W charging output. Super-fast charging supports Apple Fast Charge, completing a full charge in 60 minutes(20,000mAh) or 80% (16,000mAh) in just 25 minutes, which makes it ten times faster than traditional powerbanks.

The Flash is able to charge a huge range of devices and can deliver 100W charging to Power Delivery 3.0 supported devices. As well as Apple Fast charge, the Flash also supports Huawei Supercharge, Oppo Flash Charge, Vivo Flash Charge, 10W Wireless Fast Charge and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.

The Chargeasap Flash achieves this excellent charging performance by incorporating Tesla’s revolutionary graphene composite battery technology inside the powerbank. The Flash is equipped with four 21700 Tesla Lithium Polymer Graphene Composite Battery Cells that are manufactured by Panasonic. Not only are they powerful, the graphene batteries also make this the world’s safest powerbank since it can recharge at lower temperatures while providing a life cycle of four times that of traditional batteries.

Along with a single 100W USB Type-C port, the Flash also includes two specially designed USB type-A ports to support all major brands of fast charging, including Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo, meaning it can power large laptops, notebooks, tablets and other USB equipped devices such as smartphones and the Nintendo Switch. A fourth wireless output features 10W fast charge and 2.5W to support Apple Watch charging via the wireless pad.

The Chargeasap Flash is manufactured from aircraft-grade aluminium and is available in a black or space grey finish. You can order the Flash powerbank on Idegogo now.

Kitguru says: With 20,000mAh of charging power, the Chargeasap Flash is one of the most powerful powerbanks available. Fast charging support for a great range of devices means it would be the ideal companion for people who need to power multiple devices when travelling. What do you guys think of the new Flash powerbank from Chargeasap?

Huawei’s affordable Y series smartphone range is set to receive an upgrade this month with an updated version of the Y6 coming in mid-January, so anytime now. Huawei has boosted performance of the Y6 and added a 13MP rear camera and 8MP selfie camera in the new Y6s.

According to Huawei, the new Y6s handset “combines quality technology and stylish design at a truly affordable price.” The Y6s which is due to launch very soon leverages a 6.09” display with a 13MP rear camera to provide a cost-effective solution for taking high-quality photos or video and sharing them on social media.

The Y6s features a 13Mp rear camera with LED flash that should produce perfect photos even in low light environments and can recognise more than 22 different objects categories and over 150 scenes. Thanks to its built-in Ai Scene Recognition, the Y6s can automatically make adjustments to the scene to capture the best possible shot.

Huawei has equipped the Y6s with the MediaTek MT6765 octa-core chip, 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, to provide enough power and storage space for images, video and games. The Y6s runs on EMUI 9.1, based on Android 9 with complete Google Mobile Services and is equipped with a 3020mAh battery, meaning users will have ample battery life for all-day use.

Another new feature of the Y6s is the Huawei Dewdrop Notch Display which is a minimal and unobtrusive notch that the front camera is housed inside. The new 8MP front selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture allows users to capture high-resolution selfies, while an integrated 3.5mm headphone jack provides excellent audio using your favourite compatible headphones.

The Huawei Y6s will be available in two different colour options, Starry Black and Orchid Blue. The handset is scheduled for a mid-January release, so anytime now, priced at £129.

Earlier this year as the trade war between the US and China continued to escalate, many US companies were barred from trading with Huawei. Over the last couple of months, US companies have slowly been granted licenses to sell to the China-based device maker once again, with Microsoft now being named as the latest.

Back in May following a round of trade bans, Microsoft was unable to sell Windows 10 license keys to Huawei and also began removing laptops from its own retail stores. Now, Microsoft has confirmed that it has a license to sell software to Huawei once again.

In a statement sent to Bloomberg, a Microsoft spokesperson said: “On November 20th, the US Department of Commerce granted Microsoft’s request for a license to export mass-market software to Huawei. We appreciate the department’s action in response to our request.”

Aside from Windows license keys, Microsoft is also likely able to sell its Office software products to Huawei again too, so we will likely be seeing Windows-based Huawei laptops launching once again as we head into 2020.

KitGuru Says: This is just the latest in a string of lifted trade bans, with plenty of US companies now able to sell hardware, software and various licenses to Huawei again, enabling a return to the usual smartphone, tablet and laptop development cycle.

It would appear that Chinese companies love to be inspired by Apple’s hardware designs. Following the recent leaks that Xiaomi is planning on releasing a smartwatch which is heavily inspired by the Apple Watch, Huawei appears to also be looking at Apple for inspiration – this time for its upcoming tablet.

Huawei has consistently released a series of midrange Android tablets under the MediaPad brand, but it looks like this next tablet, rumoured to be called the MatePad Pro, will be targeting the high-end market. High-end tablets require a high-end design, and so Huawei has seemingly turned to Apple for help in that aspect.

The leaked images, brought to light by 91mobiles, show a tablet that looks suspiciously similar to the iPad Pro, except for the fact that it features a hole-punch camera in the corner. The leaked images also show a collection of accessories, likewise seemingly plucked straight from Apple’s design lab.

(Source: @evleaks/Twitter)

The tablet will release with a magnetic keyboard accessory which to no one’s surprise, looks like Apple’s magnetic keyboard. The tablet will also feature a stylus, which could easily be mistaken for the second generation Apple pencil, save for its silver colour. The stylus appears to attach magnetically to either the side or the top of the tablet.

The rumoured specs for the tablet include an in-display fingerprint scanner, Huawei’s Kirin 990 SoC, 8GB of ram, and up to 256GB of storage. The tablet is expected to launch early next year.

Back in February, we reported on the announcement of Huawei's first foldable smartphone. Now we have a date for the device's release, but only for the Chinese market and a bit later than initially planned.

With the problems that Samsung faced with its Samsung Galaxy Fold review samples, Huawei had time to improve the company's foldable smartphone. Now it seems that it's ready to hit the market on 15th November for Chinese customers.

Reports describe the device will be 5G ready, using Huawei's Kirin 980 processor paired with a Barong 5000 modem. It carries a dual-cell 4500mAh battery that's able to handle 55W fast-charging, filling 85% in 30 minutes. The only configuration announced has 8GB RAM and 512GB of storage. When unfolded, the OLED screen has an 8-inch diagonal, coming with a resolution of 2480×2200. The screen's size reduces to 6.6-inch on the front and 6.38-inch on the back when folded, decreasing to a 2480×1148 resolution for the front and a 2480×892 resolution for the back.

Huawei also revealed that an upgraded version, the Huawei Mate Xs, using the company's Kirin 990 processor with 5G built-in support, will be released on March 2020, reports GSMArena.

Pricing for Huawei Mate X starts at ¥16999, converted to 1863£, 2160€, or $2400. There's a screen repair service priced at ¥2699, converted to 295£, 340€, or $380, that might be worth checking if you're picking one of these devices.

Regarding a worldwide availability, Huawei stated that “a global launch plan is under review.”

In the same conference where Mate X was announced, Huawei also reported that the company shipped 200 million smartphones in 2019, reaching the milestone 64 days earlier than intended.

KitGuru says: Foldable devices are here to stay, and they're coming very soon. This month, we had Microsoft, Lenovo, and now Huawei announcing dates for the companies' products. Do you like the foldable trend? Are you interested in Mate X, or will you wait for other foldable smartphones?

Despite being added to the US Entity list in May, effectively banning all US companies from trading with Huawei, the Chinese tech giant appears to be doing just fine.

While the future of US-Huawei relations seems to be uncertain, the company hasn’t been resting on its laurels. Huawei has reportedly shipped over 185 million smartphones in the first three quarters of 2019, which represents a year-on-year growth of 26%. Equally, revenue for the first three quarters has seen a year-on-year growth of 24.4%, with Huawei making 610.8 billion yuan (£67.37b).

Furthermore, Huawei have also signed more than 60 commercial contracts, giving them the rights to provide 5G equipment around the world. This is despite the fears that Huawei would have the capabilities to provide a backdoor in its network for the Chinese government to use.

It seems that as of right now, the US ban has been unsuccessful in preventing Huawei from maintaining its position as the second highest selling phone manufacturer – a feat it snatched from Apple in 2018. The real test is yet to come however. Back in September, Huawei revealed its latest flagship: the Mate 30 Pro. This phone lacks a feature however, that all its other phones shipped in 2019 (in the west) did – Google services.

The lack of the Google Play Store, and other major Google services, may be the thing that finally slows down Huawei’s growth streak. Talks between the US and Huawei are constantly evolving however, so in the long run it may simply be a blip on the radar, but that remains to be seen.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the Mate 30 Pro? Would you buy an Android phone without Google Play Services? Let us know down below.

Qualcomm has confirmed that it has resumed trading with Huawei once again after tech firms lobbied for the US government to ease up on the sanctions imposed against the Chinese smartphone manufacturer.

Qualcomm’s CEO, Steve Mollenkpof, said that the company is selling components to Huawei again and is looking to seal a long-term supply deal with them. This should be a huge relief for Huawei, as Qualcomm plays a significant role in the smartphone component market and is often ahead of the competition in regards to performance.

As the U.S-China trade dispute continued, the U.S put Huawei on a blacklist, labelling the company as a threat to national security and prohibiting American companies from conducting business with them. This led to a whole bunch of issues, including Huawei's Android license being pulled and stopping smartphones and laptops from being sold just as the company was attempting to crack into the western market.

The situation has changed a bit in the last couple of months, with the U.S now allowing companies to trade with Huawei once again as long as there is no risk to national security. The fact that Qualcomm and Huawei may resume trading is good news for both parties, as Qualcomm recently blamed a 13% year-on-year revenue dip on the Huawei ban.

While U.S tech companies can resume trading with Huawei, there are still some restrictions in place. For instance, a company will have to apply for an exemption from the ‘Entity List' ban, which has already garnered over 130 applications, although licenses are being granted at a very slow pace.

It seems Qualcomm is the first to manage to obtain a license to trade with Huawei again. It is estimated that the total spent on US products by Huawei last year was $11 billion.

KitGuru says: With Qualcomm being allowed to trade with Huawei again, does this mean we will soon see other companies following suit? Perhaps the Android license could be reinstated too.

This week has been a bit of a roller coaster in the tech world as the US government's trade war with China is starting to have quite the impact. At this point. Huawei has had its full Android license revoked by Google and according to reports, US chip makers are also going to stop supplying to the company.

According to sources speaking with Bloomberg, chip makers ranging from Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Xilinx and others will be freezing their supply to Huawei. Losing out on that revenue is expected to cost these US companies hundreds of millions of dollars in the long run, so the ban is a double edged sword that hurts both sides.

Microsoft is another major tech firm involved in all of this at the moment. Right now, the company is staying quiet on pulling Windows 10 access from Huawei, but reports suggest that Microsoft Store employees have already been pulling Huawei laptops from sale.

On the smartphone side, Huawei has been preparing for this outcome by developing its own alternative operating systems for some time. The company has also been stockpiling chips so that it can continue to meet supply demands for its currently released devices in the months to come.

KitGuru Says: We've been chatting with some industry sources and there does seem to be quite a bit of concern around the US-China trade relationship right now, even in the PC hardware space. Huawei is making a lot of headlines right now, but if this continues, there will be an impact on plenty of other companies that rely on the China, whether its for additional sales or manufacturing capabilities.

Last night, it was officially revealed that Google has revoked the Android license from Huawei. This means that going forward, Huawei will be cut off from Google’s apps and services. Huawei has now put out its own statement, promising security updates and after-sales services for devices currently in circulation.

Huawei and its subsidiary brand, Honor, already has plenty of phones still in stock globally, in addition to all of the still supported devices already owned by consumers. In an email sent to The Verge today, Huawei confirmed its support plans for customers moving forward, even without the full Android license.

“Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry. Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.”

Huawei then ends its statement saying that it will build a “safe and sustainable software ecosystem” for its customers globally. Huawei has apparently been preparing for this day by developing its own OS alternative to Android, which may end up making its debut on the next batch of smartphones.

KitGuru Says: Losing the Android license may just be the start of Huawei’s concerns. Apparently, the company may also be cut off from using Qualcomm and Intel chips in the future too, which would make matters worse.

Over the last couple of years, Huawei has been making some headway in the western smartphone market. Trade tensions between the US and China were already posing a threat to Huawei’s progress but the company has now been dealt a bigger blow, as Google has pulled its Android license.

Google’s decision to pull Huawei’s Android license was initially reported by Reuters and has since been confirmed by other sources. What this essentially means is that Google will no longer have a business relationship with Huawei, and the company will be cut off from some of Google’s critical Android apps and services. This includes all of Google’s own apps, like the Play Store, Google Search etc.

Huawei will still be able to use the Android Open Source Project as a base for its smartphones. However, missing out on critical apps and services that many Android smartphone and tablet buyers expect will put Huawei at a huge disadvantage compared to much of the competition.

This all follows reports that Huawei and its equipment could used for Chinese espionage. A similar situation occurred with ZTE last year, although the sales ban on ZTE smartphones was eventually lifted. Huawei has always denied that it works with the Chinese government to allow data collection but security agencies in several countries have disagreed. Recently, the CIA informed other ‘Five Eyes’ nations that Huawei is funded by the Chinese government. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre also recently said that Huawei has ‘significant’ security issues in its 5G network.

KitGuru Says: We’ll have to wait and see what sort of an impact this has but losing access to Google’s apps and services will likely have a significant impact, even if Huawei’s devices can still be sold.

After a long debate over potential security concerns, the National Security Council has granted Huawei permission to sell its 5G equipment to mobile network operators in the UK. This doesn’t mean that fears have completely been put to rest however, as law dictates that the technology not be installed in the core of any infrastructure.

As Chairwoman of the Council, the Daily Telegraph reports that Prime Minister Theresa May has given her thumbs up for the Chinese company to begin trading infrastructure in the UK once again. The approval carries with it the same restrictions that were put in place a few years ago, ensuring that operators implement Huawei’s equipment at the edge of their network only.

Although the UK has highlighted “significant” security concerns with Huawei’s software management, there have been no signs of any backdoors in its services and the nation remains confident that its security can handle any perceived threats. The new verdict will be unsurprising to some, given that it will reportedly save the UK £6.8 billion in costs that are estimated to come from Huawei’s added coverage.

The move is likely to elicit a reaction from the United States, which has repeatedly deemed Huawei a threat to national security and pressured allies to follow suit on its blanket ban. Most recently, reports suggest that the CIA has evidence of Huawei being funded by the Chinese government, but this has done little to deter the UK’s decision. It remains to be seen whether US president Donald Trump will address the matter on his planned visit in June.

Which operators will buy from Huawei also remains a prominent question, although Vodafone, O2 and Three UK seem likely candidates after expressing their concern that a ban would delay 5G rollout. EE Limited will forgo the technology, after its £550 billion acquisition by BT saw the company strip back Huawei’s 3G and 4G equipment from its infrastructure.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see what European states decide to do in the wake of the UK’s decision. In the meantime, security concerns aside, this should help the UK become one of the frontrunners in 5G coverage.
