As the i-Series of gaming LANs passes into its 17th year, the organisation behind it has released an epic documentary that charts its history – from humble beginnings to i50 glory. KitGuru pulls up a comfy chair, pops the corn and forces YouTube to 720p goodness.

When medical student Craig Fletcher pondered a router system that would allow a ton of mates to play games like Doom II together, the world of technology was very different from what we know today.

While the Multiplay i-Series (Insomnia) was being born, here's a snap shot of the news that was exciting geeks across the globe:-

  • AMD purchased X86 chip designer NexGen – preparing for its battle against Intel
  • IBM began offering OS/2 as a multi-tasking, windows-based operating system
  • Duke Nukem 3D launched
  • The Conner hard drive company is absorbed into Seagate
  • Apple introduced the Newton Message Pad (tablets will never take off – give up chaps!)
  • Microsoft launches something called Flight Sim
  • It also pushes out something called Direct3D for the first time – in an attempt to separate games from hardware

More importantly, 3Dfx launched the Voodoo graphics card and John Carmack delivered Quake to an unsuspecting world.

This Multiplay documentary gives you a fascinating insight into the region's oldest, largest and most important LAN gaming event – with some classic footage – well worth a watch!

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgRm7gdw6Gs']

KitGuru says: Thank god Craig Fletcher didn't go into surgery. While a few lives might have been saved under his scalpel, tens of thousands of gamers would have lost out on the unique experience that is the i-Series.

As Multiplay's largest ever Insomnia LAN draws to a close, we thought we would take a look around and show those of you who weren't lucky enough to make it this year what you missed out on!

Overclockers UK

Overclockers UK had a lot of exciting stuff on display, most notably the Ducky Shine 3 Year of the Snake limited edition mechanical keyboard, which is going to be on sale shortly at a price of around £200.

IMG_2729

They also had a selection of products on display from the likes of Kingston and Asus.

IMG_2750

There were also a series of systems on display for show-goers to try out.  Overclockers are still pushing their BitFenix Prodigy based systems hard as they are perfectly suited to this type of event.  We took a closer look at those over here.

IMG_2759

OCUK were also displaying a rather sexy looking water cooled system built in the new Corsair Carbide 540 Air case.

Monster Headphones

IMG_2829

Monster were showing off their MVP Carbon headphones which were developed in conjunction with EA Sports.

IMG_2825

They had a booth babe on hand to show us the key features of the headset.

MSI and Tt eSPORTS

IMG_2855

There were even more booth babes over at the MSI and Tt eSPORTS stand.  If you look closely, you might even be able to see a motherboard and graphics card in the photo above!

IMG_2867

Tt eSPORTS were showing off their latest Cronos headset which is designed for those users who are looking for a more premium experience than the more budget friendly Shock headset.  Both of these headsets were being sold to gamers in the GAME booth.

IMG_2859

There was also a rather attractive booth babe from Aquatuning who was showcasing a high end MSI gaming computer.

IMG_2866

TT eSPORTS were showing off their latest version of the G-Unit mechanical gaming keyboard, the G-unit illuminated.

It's that time of year again, when gamers from across Europe flock to the International Centre in Telford to attend what has become the biggest gaming festival in the UK.  This bank holiday weekend marks the 46th iteration of Multiplay's Insomnia series which will accommodate over 3000 gamers for five days. Those of you who cannot make it this weekend, here's a snapshot of what you're missing out on!

Over the last few years the size of the exhibitor's area at Multiplay's Insomnia series has ballooned.  It seems that all the big names in the gaming industry are present to entice gamers into buying their latest and greatest kit.

The gaming area is absolutely huge and is like two large warehouses full of rows and rows of PCs.

There is also a massive tournament area featuring large screens and seating for hundreds of spectators.

As soon as we walked into the exhibitors hall we were greeted by the massive Overclockers UK stand which had some really impressive systems on display.  They also have some special deals on for the show which are also available on their website here.

There were three systems in particular which caught our eyes.  First of all, the two Titan Prodigy LAN gaming systems which are based around the new BitFenix Prodigy case that we reviewed here.  These are quite reasonably priced and have very capable components which make an ideal LAN gaming system thanks to the compact case.  They are available to buy here.

We were also quite impressed by the look of the Overclockers Ultima 9700i which offers a great specification for the price which includes nVidia's GeForce GTX 690 graphics card alongside an overclocked Intel Core i7-3820 processor.  This is available to purchase here.

Just in case you had forgotten about Overclockers presence at the event they had also decorated the bar in an Overclockers UK theme which included everything from banners to beer mats.

While there were no booth babes on the Overclockers UK stand, we only had to go just round the corner to the Thermaltake booth to find some.  It may take you a few moments to notice but the models in the picture above are showcasing the brand new Level 10 mouse.

They also had a wide range of existing products on display as well as the new Tt eSPORTS Chao Dracco headphones which were kindly modelled for us by one of Thermaltake's babes.

Multiplay runs the hugely successful Insomnia events 3 times a year (i-Series), taking over the entirety of Telford International Centre to host thousands and thousands of hard core gamers. Cameras were on site to capture the event, but – more importantly – what the event means to the major corporations that help make it happen.

Back in August, PC World Head Honcho, Adam Chaplin, made the surprise announcement that the i-Series would be supported – on an ongoing basis – but the UK's largest reseller.

Our cameras were around to follow up on PC World's commitment – to see what this support really looks like.

KitGuru says: Events are great. We love em. From the scarily large Gamescom in Cologne to the warming regularity of Multiplay's i-Series. But these ‘give back top the masses' projects would not be possible without support from organisations like PC World. Well played Adam Chaplin!

From 26th June 2010 KitGuru, the fastest growing technology site in the world, will be hosted by the awesome power of Multiplay’s advanced server technology. Bonza!

This is, indeed, amazing news. With your help, we've managed to touch 100,000 sessions in a single day and deliver over 1 million pages in a month. In addition to the stunning number of top quality, in-depth technical reviews being pushed through by KitGuru Labs, we have also broken a series of World Exclusive stories. So who's to blame?……. You!

We'd like to say a BIG thank you to KitGuru readers around the world

By visiting this site and reading our articles in numbers we could not possibly have hoped for, you guys have made it necessary for KitGuru to change hosting 3 times since we officially opened for businesses at the start of May 2010.

Yep. That's 3 hosting changes in about 8 weeks. Nice.

OK, so why has KitGuru chosen to partner with Multplay on this? Simply put, no other operation in the market can deliver more power. With Multiplay’s latest super-blade servers, powered by multiple 6 core Intel processors and weighing in at over $40,000 each, these guys can provide over 100,000 gaming slots. That's more than 100,000 gamers, online, at the same time.

OK. That's big. Really big. but there's more?

Not only is Multiplay's technology right at the leading edge of what’s possible, they are also a serious multi-national operation with data centres in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Virginia, Texas and California.

Multiplay says "None shall be left behind" and rolls out its plan for global game server domination

At the start, back in 1997, Multiplay was focused on small gaming LANs and events. But now there's much more to it.

It's not just CS1.6 you know. Not at $40,000 a server!

In addition to the +20,000 simultaneous gaming connections that Multiplay regularly hosts across the globe, they also successfully run several other a number of other enterprises that you may or may not be familiar with, including:-

  • Voice Comms
Offering customers the choice of Ventrilo, TeamSpeak and Mumble – with the ability to host thousands and thousands of in-game conversations with crystal clarity and total reliability accessible here
    .
  • Fileplay
The best place to download demos, trailers and a host of other video content – massive files delivered at the highest speeds possible. In addition to being EA's Bad Company 2 launch partners, Fileplay has loads of other content here
    .
  • i-Series
Multiplay’s world famous gaming series happens 3 times a year and is now up to i40. Over the past 13 years, they have welcomed over 65,000 gamers to these events and handed out well over $500,000 in prize money. Find out more (and register if you think you're hard enough!) over here

.
In all of this, let's not lose site of the coolest thing.

An organisation the size of Multiplay could have chosen to work with any of the world’s top technology sites, and they chose KitGuru.

Not sure if KitGuru's publishing system supports a :BIG BLUSH: emoticon, but that’s what we're all feeling right now.

Over the coming weeks, we will be looking in detail at the technology needed to run serious services like games (rather than the usual weak-arsed applications that banks and oil companies want to trot out).

In the meantime, if you want to try Multiplay for your next online gaming event then, right now, they have some BIG discounts on offer.

In the past, everytime KitGuru has increased the amount of world-class content available on our site, we’ve hit a brick wall in terms of simultaneous access.  We don’t think it’s possible to attract so much traffic that Multiplay’s servers are brought to their knees whimpering…   but we’re prepared to give it a try!

If you want to see Multiplay and KitGuru folk in the flesh, then all you LAN Fans should aim to get down to the next Multiplay event in August, i40. It promises to be a memorable weekend!

It's almost as if this gaming stuff is popular and will catch on with an ever larger audience.

KitGuru says: This is a major step forward for KitGuru as a major technology web site. We have received a lot of support from the world's top technology partners as well as you, our readers. KitGuru's partnership with Multiplay will be one of the most important we ever make as a company, because it really allows us to expand globally. Here's to the future!

Sorry for all the downtime recently, but it was important that we got this move right. Please let us know what you think in our forums!
