Apple has introduced a more affordable version of its flagship iMac with 5K retina display. The new personal computer features slightly slower processor and lower-performance graphics card, but apart from that, it is still a rather decent machine. In addition, Apple slashed the price of the original iMac 5K in the U.S. and the U.K.

The affordable Apple iMac 5K (with 5120*2880 screen resolution) is based on a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 3.30GHz clock-rate and is equipped with AMD Radeon R9 M290 2GB graphics adapter (Bonaire XTX, 896 stream processors), 8GB of DDR3 memory, 1TB hard drive, two Thunderbolt 2 connectors, four USB 3.0 ports and so on.

The most affordable configuration of Apple’s iMac 5K costs $1999, £1599 or €2299, depending on the region. Previously the most affordable Apple iMac with 5K retina display, quad-core Intel Core i5 chip 3.50GHz and AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics adapter (Curacao XT, 1280 stream processors) cost $2499, £1999, €2599. The same configuration is now available for $2399, £1849 and €2599.

Apple can configure its iMac 5K systems according to demands of its clients. The PCs can be equipped with high-performance solid-state-drives with PCI Express interface and up to 1TB capacity, AMD Radeon R9 M295X (Tahiti XT, 2048 stream processors) 4GB graphics adapter, up to 32GB of DDR3 memory and various peripherals.

KitGuru Says: If you do not need leading-edge performance of a high-end workstation, but require an ultra-high-quality display, then the iMac 5K is clearly a system to consider. It has one of the best monitors available and its performance should be enough for a lot of workloads.

As 4K ultra-high-definition monitors migrate to mainstream price points, 5K UHD displays are set to become a new de-facto standard for ultra-premium segment.

Apple and Dell will not be alone with 5K (5120*2880) ultra-high-definition displays next year as more makers are going to join them, according to a media report. A number of display vendors are working on ultra HD 5K monitors for commercial, business and gaming market segments, reports DigiTimes web-site.

LG Display and Philips are among the companies to offer 5K UHD displays in 2015. Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest supplier of displays, will also likely introduce its own 5K UHD monitor next year.

Most panel makers, including AU Optronics, will focus monitor panel production on larger sizes in addition to 4K units, it is reported. LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics will likely be the leading suppliers of 5K panels and displays.

Global shipments of LCD displays are expected to reach 136 million units in 2014, 132 million units in 2015 and 128 million in 2017 because of declines of desktop PC sales.

KitGuru Says: The success of 5K displays will depend not only on their competitive pricing, but also on the success of 21:9 aspect ratio in general. At present many consider it too wide, but if a lot of people try it and find comfortable, such monitors may easily enter mainstream market.

Apple experiences challenges fulfilling orders for its iMac 27” all-in-one desktops with 5K retina-class displays. Orders placed online right now will take weeks to be dispatched and some customers in the U.S. are notified about unexpected delays.

Readers of 9-to-5Mac web-site complain that Apple has informed them that delivery of their new iMac desktops had been pushed back up to an additional two weeks. For example, a customer who pre-ordered the iMac 27” with 5K retina display on the 31st of October will have to wait for the personal computer to arrive till the 2nd of December due to unexpected delays.

Apple online stores in the U.S. and the U.K. notify potential customers that it will take two to three weeks to ship the new iMac 27″ with 5K (5120*2880) display resolution. Apple typically increases shipment times for products that are either in very high demand or for products that it cannot ship in sufficient volumes.

It is noteworthy that many Apple retail stores in the U.S. actually feature iMac 27” with 5K ultra-high-definition displays and have systems in stock, the company only delays orders made in online stores. Perhaps, Apple has no problems shipping its new iMacs in standard configurations, but due to high demand has to delay certain user-configured PCs.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that all high-end desktops from Apple are assembled in the U.S., it looks like the company simply cannot produce enough devices early in the lifecycle when many people order systems with non-standard configurations.
