Retrofitted with a new CPU based on Intel’s latest-and-greatest Broadwell micro-architecture, MSI’s GT72 2QE Dominator Pro G also ships with an additional gaming-centric gem – the use of a 1920×1080 G-Sync panel that runs at 75Hz.

As is expected from MSI’s GT72 series of gaming laptops, a considerable portion of frame rate-pushing hardware is crammed inside the system’s thick plastic chassis. On the CPU front a user gets a Core i7-5700HQ CPU built on Intel’s latest Broadwell micro-architecture and 14nm manufacturing process. The chip operates at a nominal clock speed of 2.70GHz but regularly turbos as high as 3.50GHz.

Partnering the Broadwell CPU is an 8GB GTX 980M GPU based on Nvidia’s Maxwell architecture. The Nvidia mobile GPU flagship runs at a core clock of up to 1126MHz (from our testing) with the 8GB of GDDR5 memory operating at 1253MHz. Primary motives for the GTX 980M GPU are to drive the GT72 2QE Dominator Pro G’s 1920×1080 G-Sync panel at its native refresh rate of up to 75fps.

Other noteworthy hardware choices include 16GB of DDR3-1600 memory, a 128GB Toshiba SSD, 1TB of HDD storage, Killer Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac WiFi, and built-in USB 3.1 connectivity. Gaming-related peripherals include the backlit SteelSeries keyboard, SteelSeries Engine, Dynaudio sound system, and Nahimic audio processing technology.

Does MSI’s GT72 2QE Dominator Pro G offer an alluring balance of hardware and features that tempt gamers to part with their money?

System Configuration:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Latest 5th Gen. Intel® Core™ i7-5700HQ processor
  • 17“ Full HD (1920X1080) , Anti-glare PLS, G-SYNC ready
  • The latest USB 3.1 SuperSpeed+ interface built in
  • Nahimic Sound Technology with immersive 3D sound processing
  • Embedded NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 980M with ultra performance
  • Exclusive SHIFT technology for system’s performance and balance
  • Exclusive Cooler Boost 3 Technology
  • Killer Double Shot Pro (Killer Gb LAN + Killer 802.11 a/c WiFi) with Smart Teaming
  • Audio Boost 2 with 3 independent amp for best sound experience
  • Evolution of Sound by Dynaudio 2.1 sound system
  • SteelSeries Engine to personalize your own style
  • XsplitGamcaster for broadcasting, recording and sharing
  • Keyboard by Steelseries with full color LED back light
  • Matrix display support up to 4 displays

Where is Intel Broadwell? Hardware Editors Leo Waldock and Luke Hill discuss Broadwell which is due to be replaced by Skylake in a few months' time. The snag is that Intel hasn't yet released the laptop and desktop versions of Broadwell so the clock is ticking. Or is it tocking?

This means that right now desktop LGA1150 and Extreme LGA2011 are using the same generation of technology, although that happy state of affairs won't last much longer.

The 4th Gen. Haswell CPUs could be tricky to cool when you started overclocking, although the revised Devil's Canyon sorted things out nicely.

Talking points:

  • Intel Broadwell and Skylake
  • Haswell and Devil's Canyon
  • LGA2011
  • Liquid cooling for GPUs as well as CPUs

Cooling is a particular bugbear for reviewers who spend their lives testing hardware, so Leo and Luke have strong views on the subject. Liquid cooling is superb and the sooner we have liquid cooled graphics cards the better, at least on the high end models. Naturally Luke advocates liquid cooling so he can overclock his graphics card(s) even higher, but that's the sign of a true enthusiast.

At the Computex trade-show in Taipei, Taiwan, Intel Corp. introduced its first microprocessors based on the code-named “Broadwell” micro-architecture aimed at ultra-thin high-performance tablets, notebooks and 2-in-1s. The new central processing units (CPUs) are called the Core M and will emerge on the market later this year. The chipmaker also introduced innovative Core M-based reference designs.

Previously known as the code-named Broadwell-Y, the new Core M chips feature two x86 cores with the Hyper-Threading technology, the Intel HD Graphics core with 24 execution units and various enhancements, 3MB of L3 cache, dual-channel DDR3 memory controller as well as a core-logic placed on the same piece of substrate as the processor. At present Intel does not reveal actual power consumption of the new Core M (BDW-Y 2+2) chips, but it is likely that there will be CPUs with scenario design power of around 4.5W or lower.

At the Computex show Intel also demonstrated two Intel Core M-based reference designs for 2-in-1 systems, code-named “Llama Mountain.” The 12.5” version of the Llama Mountain features 2560*1440 IGZO display (developed by Sharp), when its keyboard is detached, it measures only 7.2mm thin and weighs only 670 grams. The 10” tablet version of the “Llama Mountain” is just 550 grams and a mere 6.8mm thin, which is comparable to the Apple iPad 4.

Intel claims there are three times the volume of new 2-in-1 designs in the pipeline compared with a year ago; 50 per cent of these designs are expected to hit mainstream price points below $700.

The Intel Core M processor will be the first 14nm product on the market market in the second half of this year, Intel said. Earlier this year Intel said that the Core M-based systems would be available by Christmas.

KitGuru Says: While we have no doubts that Intel can built an Apple iPad-like tablet or even a 2-in-1 device of a similar size, it remains to be seen whether the “Llama Mountain” design will be actually adopted by commercial products. Usually Intel’s reference designs utilise state-of-the-art components that are pretty expensive or are not in mass production.
