All us tech enthusiasts love a bit of competition when it comes to CPU pricing and it looks as though that could be what Intel is planning, with the possible existence of a new 10th generation Core i9 CPU set to offer consumers with a cheaper alternative to the flagship 10900K.

Various sources around the industry have been reporting that Intel may be prepping a new 10th generation 10-core part this week, after an entry in the Geekbench platform was spotted by serial leaker TUM_APISAK on Twitter. The Geekbench entry lists a potential addition to the Intel Core 10th generation Comet Lake-S series, with a new i9-10850K CPU that features a slightly reduced frequency compared with the flagship Core i9-10900K.

Intel released its flagship Core i9-10900K in April this year, the CPU boasts a base and boost frequency of 3.7Ghz and 5.3GHz respectively, the flagship Intel CPU is once again regarded as the top dog when it comes to gaming performance. However, the Core i9-10900K comes with a hefty price tag at around £550 in the UK, which is in a similar price bracket to the 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 3900X.

The recently spotted Intel Core i9-10850K features the same 10-core, 20-thread count as the 10900K but according to the Geekbench entry, it is equipped with a slightly reduced base frequency of 3.6GHz and boosting up to 5.2GHz which is just 100MHz below the i9-10900K in both scenarios. Other than the reduction in core frequency, the similarities between the two 10th gen Core i9 processors continue with the same amount of L2 and L3 cache found in each.

Although there is no official TDP rating of the potential i9-10850K, it would most likely be a 125w part. Looking at the figures from the Geekbench result, the Core i9-10850K produces virtually the same single-core score as the i9-10900K but with around 5% lower multi-core score. Whether this is a new retail chip or an OEM only product similar to the AMD Ryzen 9 3900 remains to be seen, However, it would be great news if this turns out to be a cheaper alternative to Intel’s flagship Core i9-10900K. The thought of a 10-core Intel part at around £450-£500 would certainly be good news for gamers.

The post PC Specialist Vortex S3 System Review w/ i7-10700K first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Intel's 10th Generation Core processors for desktop hit the shelves just a few weeks ago and PCSpecialist has been hard at work designing new pre-built systems around the latest Comet Lake-S platform. Today we look at one of the first systems from PCSpecialist to be equipped with the new Intel Core i7-10700K processor and see whether or not it is worth buying, priced at just under £1650.

The new Intel Core i7-10700K processor is basically a rebadged Core i9-9900K with a few tweaks to clock frequencies. The Core i9-9900K is still regarded as one of, if not the best CPU for gaming and is a very handy multitasking CPU with its 8 cores and 16 threads, so we expect the 10700K to follow in its footsteps. The 8 core, 16 thread part is no longer Intel’s flagship CPU so it is likely that we may see the 10700K appear in more reasonably price mid-high-end pre-built gaming PCs in the coming months.

With the launch of Intel 10th generation desktop processors came a new Z490 motherboard platform with an LGA1200 socket which is the base of this new Vortex S3 system from PCSpecialist in the form of the Asus ROG Strix Z490-F Gaming. The motherboard in question has a very stealthy looking appearance with its matte black PCB and various black heatsinks and heat spreaders with silver highlights.

We expect this motherboard to form an excellent base for a gaming system, it also offers the potential for overclocking and fine-tuning the system as well as an upgrade path to 11th generation Intel Core processors when Intel chooses to release those in the future. The Asus motherboard inside the system also offers space for expansion such as adding another graphics card to run SLI or Crossfire, unpopulated DIMM slots to install additional memory and an extra M.2 slot for adding more high-speed storage.

While we are on the subject of storage, this is an area of the system that I am immediately impressed by. PCSpecialist has done away with any mechanical hard drives in the Vortex S3 system and has instead opted for two Samsung SSDs. The lower M.2 slot is populated by a 500 GB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 SSD that contains the Windows 10 installation with an additional 1 TB Samsung 860 QVO SATA SSD for storage.

The default memory capacity that comes pre-installed in the Vortex S3 is 16GB DDR4, which is widely thought of as the minimum for a gaming system these days. The brand of memory is Corsair Vengeance LPX and PCSpecialist has configured the memory to run at its XMP profile speed of 3000MHz in the motherboard BIOS.

A Cooler Master MasterCase H500 is the chosen chassis for the Vortex S3 system which is a good choice for airflow with its vented mesh front panel. The case is supplied with an alternative acrylic front panel for reduced noise and PCSpecialist has included this so the customer has the choice of running the case in either configuration.

To ensure that the system temperature is kept under control, PCSpecialist has equipped the Vortex S3 with a 240 AIO CPU cooler, as well as retaining the three systems fans that come pre-installed with the Cooler Master case. The 240 AIO cooler is branded as a PCS FrostFlow 240 RGB high-performance liquid cooler. The cooler is supplied by ID-Cooling and is one of their ZoomFlow 240X ARGB units, with a custom top cover sporting a PCSpecialist logo.

PCSpecialist has included an Nvidia RTX 2070 Super graphics card from Palit in the Vortex S3 system. This probably seems like the logical pairing with the 10700K since the 8 core part is considered more of a mid to high-end CPU now that the 10 core 10900K is the flagship for this generation and would probably be more likely to be the CPU that is paired with the high-end RTX 2080 Super and 2080 Ti cards in flagship pre-built systems.

The Vortex S3 system from PCSpecialist has the specification of a high-end gaming PC and should also be a very competent workstation or content creation type system. The System specification can be tweaked to suit customer preference and is available to order directly from the PCSpecialist website. In its stock form, the system is priced at £1,649 which seems reasonable, but we will save final judgement for later in the review.

It has been rumoured for months that Intel will launch 10th generation Comet Lake-S desktop processors in April this year, something that has not been officially confirmed by Intel. However, leaked NDA information over the weekend may have all but confirmed an April/June release date.

Just a few days ago, we saw the first photos of what could potentially be 10th generation Intel Comet Lake-S processors, with images of two CPUs marked Intel confidential claiming to be Core i9-10900K and i7-10700K processors. In a more recent Intel Comet Lake-S leak, another photo has popped up, claiming to be a new Intel Core i5-10400 processor, along with some early NDA information.

Images of the Intel Core i5-10400 processor were originally uploaded to the PTT website and noticed by Uniko’s Hardware. The images show what looks like a retail version of the CPU since the actual Intel Core i5-10400 markings can be seen on the heat spreader. Unlike the previous Coffee Lake Core i5-9400, the 10th generation equivalent will be equipped with Hyperthreading, so still six cores but double the thread count at twelve.

The Intel Core i5-10400 is expected to feature a base frequency of 2.9 GHz, boosting to 4.3 GHz on a single core, with an all-core boost frequency of 4.0 GHz. The non-K version which is seen in the images will have a 65W TDP rating, while K and KF versions are expected to be 125W TDP, most likely at the base core frequency.

In addition to the photos of the Core i5-10400 CPU, Uniko's Hardware posted what is thought to be early NDA information regarding the launch timeframe for the 10th generation desktop processors, along with disclosure guidelines. The leaked slide outlines the product introduction date within a five-week window of between 13th April – 26th June, so an exact date is still to be confirmed by Intel.

Earlier this week the first images of what claim to be Intel’s new 10th generation Comet Lake-S processors appeared on Chinese social media ahead of the highly anticipated launch which is expected to take place sometime in April.

Although rumours are circulating around the industry that Intel will unveil its 10th generation desktop CPU line up in April, this has still not been officially confirmed. However, that has not stopped images of potential Intel Core i9-10900K and i7-10700K processors appearing on the Chinese social media outlet Weibo.

Weibo user WolStame uploaded the blurry images of what are thought to be the new Intel 10th generation Comet Lake-S Core i9-10900K and i7-10700K processors earlier this week. The images from Weibo that were later regurgitated on Twitter by @9550pro didn’t reveal much other than intel Confidential markings on the integrated heat spreader denoting that these are early engineering samples.

As well as the images of the top of the CPUs, there were also photos of the underside showing the pin arrangement. These images seem to confirm that the processors are built on the new LGA1200 platform and you can also see electrical circuitry arranged unlike any previous generation Intel CPU, that gives us an indication these may well be the real deal.

If the rumoured April release turns out to be correct, we could start hearing official details from Intel regarding 10th generation Comet Lake-S specification and performance, such as the increase in logical cores and alleged higher boost frequencies that have been circulating recently. The Intel Core i9-10900K is expected to launch with 10 cores and 20 threads, with rumours suggesting up to 5.3GHz Turbo frequency may be a possibility.
