Since becoming part of the Xbox Game Studios family, we've all been wondering what InXile has coming next. After Wasteland 3 later this year, it looks like the team will be shipping a surprise VR game.

Today, InXile announced Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds, developed at a smaller team at InXile in collaboration with Thirdverse. This isn't an RPG or a single-player game, but rather a PvP shooter pitting 10v10 teams against each other:

“Set in an abandoned military base in Antarctica, each team will need to gear up and set out to dominate the opposing team while protecting themselves from terrifying biomechanical creatures.”

The game promises highly details weapons and a unique sci-fi setting. While PvP is the main focus, there is also a “unique PvE twist” involving an ‘”otherworldly biomechanical threat”.

KitGuru Says: This is clearly something that InXile had set up prior to last year's Microsoft acquisition, but still, it looks interesting. The game will be coming to Oculus and Steam VR before the end of this year and then, the studio will be focusing on its next big RPG for Xbox and PC.

InXile has had plenty of success over the years with Wasteland and The Bards Tale, but the studio is already looking towards its next chapter. At the moment, the team is hard at work wrapping up Wasteland 3 but after that, something even bigger has been teased.

Following on from Wasteland 3, InXile Entertainment will begin working on a next-gen RPG for Xbox Series X and of course, PC.

Interestingly, the next-gen project will be based on Unreal Engine 5, which Epic Games announced just earlier this month. The engine will be in beta for a chunk of time, before getting a finalised release in 2021.

KitGuru Says: While inXile has certainly put a good level of polish into its games, there have always been strict budget restraints. Those restrictions can now be lifted thanks to the Microsoft acquisition, so it will be very interesting to see what the studio cooks up in the years to come.

Last month, rumours surrounding Microsoft’s acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment came to a head, with many sources stating that it was almost complete. These rumours have since been officially confirmed at Microsoft’s X018, along with the surprise purchase of inXile Entertainment.

With Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity under its belt, Obsidian adds a lot of RPG power to Microsoft’s line-up. This contrasts Forza Horizon developer Playground Games and action-adventure studios Undead Labs, Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games, which were all acquired this year.

More unexpectedly, Microsoft has now struck a deal to buy inXile Entertainment, the developer known for its work on the Wasteland series, and recent sequel The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep. Brian Fargo remains CEO of inXile, but it isn’t certain how this will affect his plans to potentially buy back Interplay.

“The 13 distinct and diverse game development teams that form Microsoft Studios are focused on implementing new Microsoft technologies, delivering content for new platforms and services like Xbox Game Pass, and creating exclusive games that turn players into loyal Xbox fans,” explains Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Matt Booty.

“We are committed to expanding the Microsoft Studios franchises players already love, and investing in new, exclusive content for every type of gamer. We will continue to operate autonomously and bring their unique talents, IP, and expertise to Microsoft Studios as they build new RPG experiences for our players and fans.”

KitGuru Says: This acquisition is sure to pump a lot of money into both Obsidian and inXile. The only caveat moving forward is that PlayStation plays might miss out on the masterpieces from either studio, depending on how Microsoft wants to handle releases. How do you feel about the acquisitions?

Since parting ways with Interplay in 2000, Brian Fargo has gone on to create development studio inXile Entertainment and blockchain-based digital games storefront Robot Cache. Now, the developer has expressed his interest in buying back Interplay Entertainment, providing his latest game does well enough.

Brian Fargo founded Interplay Productions in 1983, helping to publish and create renowned titles like Baldur’s Gate, Fallout and Earthworm Jim until his departure in 2000. Taking the rights to The Bard’s Tale and Wasteland with him, Fargo created inXile Entertainment in 2002, going on to produce sequels to the beloved series.

The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep enjoyed a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in 2015, achieving numerous stretch goals, including an enhanced companion NPC system, crafting system and four new dungeons each designed by a different member of the team. Celebrating its launch today, September 18th, Fargo has added another unofficial stretch goal via Twitter.

“I'm asked what would we do if Bard's Tale 4 PC is a big hit,” says Fargo on his official Twitter. “How about this stretch goal. I will attempt to buy Interplay back if we manage to sell over 2 million units in the first 18 months.”

If successful, “tons” of IPs would flow into Fargo’s grasp, including Dragon Wars, Earthworm Jim, Sacrifice and Kingpin. Responses on Twitter seem particularly interested in a sequel to space simulator, Descent. “My fans have been requesting me to bring back my old Interplay games for years,” Fargo said in an interview with Variety. “This would be the most amazing way to make that happen.”

This is sure to spark a debate during Fargo’s AMA session taking place on Wednesday 19th September at 9am. Fargo didn’t clarify which time zone this would be taking place in, or on which platform, however it’s presumed to be taking place on Twitter or inXile's Twitch.

KitGuru Says: In the meantime, Fargo and inXile have their hands full with Wasteland 3 after its successful crowdfunding campaign on Fig. Personally, I’d quite like to see another Earthworm Jim out of that roster. How about you?
