Today we are looking at the latest flagship phone from Apple – the iPhone 11 Pro. With prices starting at £1049 for the 64GB model, we know that the top-end iPhones are up there with the most expensive smartphones money can buy. With this new iteration, Apple has implemented a new triple-camera system, an updated Bionic processor and significantly increased battery capacity. Is this the best phone around?

If you watched Apple's keynote at the beginning of the month, you will have noticed how the majority of the event was dedicated to the iPhone 11 Pro's new triple-camera system. The most obvious upgrade is the addition of that third camera, sporting an ultrawide 13mm-equivalent focal length, but there's also the addition of a software-based night mode and updated Smart HDR image processing.

It has been just over a week since Apple announced this year’s iPhone line-up, consisting of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. During the announcement, Apple did share some details on the upgraded A13 Bionic chip but deeper technical specifications were left a mystery. That changed this week, as more details have been uncovered via Apple's developer tools and early teardowns.

Initially, the iPhone 11 was rumoured to have 6GB of RAM, bringing the hardware closer to flagship Android devices. However, based on details found in Apple’s Xcode app, all versions of the iPhone 11 actually ship with 4GB of RAM, the same amount as the iPhone XS. While this would normally be disappointing news, it doesn’t seem to be holding Apple back much, as the iPhone 11 is already beating out Android competitors in benchmarks.

While RAM upgrades didn’t make the cut for this year’s iPhones, Apple did pay extra attention to batteries. All three iPhone 11 models now ship with a single-cell battery instead of a multi-cell version. The larger iPhone 11 Pro Max also has a significant battery boost, coming in at 3,969mAh capacity- 25 percent larger than the battery inside the iPhone XS Max.

The iPhone 11 series wasn’t the only big announcement at Apple’s event last week though. The company also announced the Apple Watch 5, with a few upgrades including an always-on display and a built-in compass. Internally though, you’ll find that the Apple Watch 5 is powered by the same chip as the Apple Watch 4, so it has a few new features but won’t deliver higher performance or more power efficiency.

KitGuru Says: The teardowns after an Apple launch are always interesting, especially for the iPhone and iPad as Apple is only upfront about a few details regarding specs. We know that the iPhone 11 Pro Max had a battery upgrade, so it will be interesting to see if the other two models received similar treatment.

Just as expected, during Apple's annual September event, we saw the launches of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. The new trio of devices are similar to last year's, with one LCD display model and two OLEDs. However, all three new iPhones are equipped with the new A13 Bionic SoC for improved performance.

The standard iPhone 11 is essentially a replacement to the XR, offering a range of colour options, the same LCD display and dual camera sensors on the rear. The main upgrades here come via iOS 13 feature updates and higher performance enabled by the new A13 Bionic processor.

The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are replacements for last year's XS and XS Max. As previously leaked, these two devices have a new camera arrangement, adding a third sensor, delivering Ultra Wide, Wide and Telephoto lenses for photos and video. The new cameras are supposed to deliver significant improvements in low-light situations and higher quality video recording.

The OLED displays here are described as ‘Super Retina XDR', which includes 1,200 nits of peak brightness for HDR content. The iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch display running at 2436×1125 resolution, while the Pro Max has a 6.5-inch display running at 2688×1242 resolution. All three iPhone 11 devices use the A13 Bionic SoC.

The new A13 Bionic chip allows for 30 percent faster Face ID recognition. A new U1 chip allows the iPhone 11 series to use Ultra Wideband technology, so Airdrop will be improved with directional awareness. Finally, Dolby Atmos certification and a WiFi 6 modem are included for better audio and faster networking.

Pricing is similar to last year, so the iPhone 11 starts at £729, the iPhone 11 Pro starts at £1,049 and the iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at £1,149.

KitGuru Says: I'm not particularly impressed with the iPhone upgrades this year, particularly at the current pricing. Are any of you planning on upgrading this year?
