As software continues to move forward and evolve, it becomes harder to support older devices. The number of years you are guaranteed updates for varies between smartphone makers, although Apple tends to keep its devices going for longer than most. With that said, iOS 13 will reportedly drop support for four older iPhones and two older iPads.

The iPhone 5S, iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are apparently on the chopping block for iOS 13. On the iPad side, the iPad Mini 2 and original iPad Air may also be affected, according to French iPhone rumour site, iPhonesoft.

iphone6s-gallery2-2015-e1481055577953.jpg

This isn’t too surprising for the iPhone 5S, which is turning six years old this year. In fact, many were expecting 5S support to be dropped last year with iOS 12. The iPhone 6 is a little more surprising though, it is getting old, but it was also one of the highest selling smartphones of all time.

KitGuru Says: We aren’t far off iOS 13 being officially revealed, so we’ll start to learn about feature updates and general OS changes quite soon. Do any of you happen to still have an old iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 knocking around?

We have been hearing rumors about Apple's plans for a new 4-inch iPhone for over a year now but the time has finally come, with Apple set to make an official announcement next week. However, as usual, the Internet has got its hands on details ahead of time so now we have a pretty good idea of what Apple is set to reveal with the iPhone SE.

The iPhone SE was strongly rumored to heavily resemble the iPhone 5S with iPhone 6S specifications. That lost some steam a little bit but 9to5Mac has checked with its own sources that the iPhone SE will feature the boxy, non-curved iPhone 5 design, almost to the point where it will look “exactly the same” as the iPhone 5S minus a few potential differences.

5S

On the internal side of things, the iPhone SE will feature the A9 processor and an M9 chip for Siri commands. There will be NFC, which also means support for Apple Pay and there will be some upgrades to the WiFi and cellular hardware. The final upgrade will be the camera, which will see a bump up to 12 megapixels and support for 4K video recording.

KitGuru Says: While not everyone is a huge fan of larger screens on smartphones, it does seem that most iPhone users have moved on to the 6 and 6 Plus at this point so I wonder just how popular a new 4-inch iPhone will be. It could turn out to be a fairly niche market going forward.

Apple is currently preparing to launch the iPhone 6C at some point in 2016. We've already heard a few details and rumours, including one prominent iTunes leak but now it looks like things are starting to take shape, as new reports claim the iPhone 6C will ditch plastic in favour of an iPhone 5s-like design, with upgraded internal hardware.

Apple's iPhone 5C didn't perform as well as Apple had hoped, largely due to rumours surrounding its pricing before release. Now it seems Apple wants to justify the cost, with the premium iPhone 5s design and the A9 processor powering the device, which is also found in the iPhone 6s.

5S

This is all according to KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo, who according to 9to5Mac, has a pretty good track record with these things. Aside from the beefier processor and 4-inch display, the iPhone 6C will also get an NFC chip for Apple Pay support, will be available in two or three colours and cost between $400 and $500.

According to the analyst, this new iPhone will apparently account for eight or nine percent of iPhones sold next year too.

KitGuru Says: It seems that Apple is taking the C-line of iPhones in a new direction next year, ditching plastic and colours for a premium design and components with a smaller screen-size. It did something similar with the iPads at one point, though it eventually bumped down the iPad Mini specifications in order to sell more full-sized units.

Apple responded to market trends towards larger smartphone screens with the launch of its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus earlier this year. Nonetheless, the company has not discontinued iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, which are intended for those, who want to use their phones with one hand. Moreover, the consumer electronics giant does not plan to abandon 4” display size even next year, a media report claims.

Apple is testing new 4” displays for its future smartphones, according to Taiwanese Electronic Times news-paper, reports Feng.com. The media outlet traditionally cites sources in the supply chain, which usually leak details about Apple’s future products quarters ahead of actual launches. The new smartphone with 4” screen could see the light of day sometimes in 2015, or may not make it to the market at all because Apple, as many other high-tech companies, usually builds different prototypes many of which never make it outside the company.

Apple refused to launch an iPhone with a display larger than 4” for years because it is increasingly uncomfortable (or impossible) to use such smartphones with one hand. However, the company could not ignore demands of its customers and released handsets with 4.7” and 5.5” this year. Still, there are a lot of users who prefer to use a phone with one hand and currently Apple can only offer them its previous-generation iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

apple_iphone_6

According to unofficial information, Apple will discontinue its “low-cost” iPhone 5c next year. The iPhone 5s will also be outdated in 2015. Therefore it will be logical for Apple to just add another model with 4” display into the contemporary (2015) lineup of smartphones to lure customers who need smaller devices, reports Pocketnow. In fact, three smartphone models with similar hardware inside, but different display sizes, seems like a right plan both for addressing different types of customers and for addressing different price-points.

Apple did not comment on the news-story.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: In fact, reinventing the iPhone lineup with three display sizes is the idea to go for Apple. In a bid to grow, Apple needs to raise its market share (or at least maintain it). Therefore, it needs to address certain market segments and certain people better than its rivals. While the iPhone business is thriving these days, the lineup itself does not look very good: it includes four base smartphone models powered by three different hardware platforms (A8, A7 and A6) with completely different capabilities. Given vast difference between iPhone 6, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c (which is, basically, a two-years old iPhone 5 in a polycarbonate case), it does not seem like this family addresses all customers in the best and easiest way possible (it is uneasy to choose between the iPhones for an unexperienced user). Therefore, unification of the iPhone lineup is something that Apple will likely need to do next year.

Although Apple has offered smartphones and tablets with 64-bit application processors for well over a year now, many programs remained 32-bit and could not take advantage of the new system-on-chips. This is going to change in the coming months, as Apple wants all software developers to include 64-bit support in their applications designed for the iOS 8 platform.

Starting the first of February, 2015, all new iOS apps uploaded to the App Store must include 64-bit support and be built with the iOS 8 software development kit (SDK). While Apple will not remove existing apps from its store, it encourages developers of programs to include 64-bit support in updates as well. The move is hardly surprising as Apple is currently shipping its second-generation 64-bit application processors and devices on their base.

64-bit processing technology allows microprocessors to address over 4GB of memory natively as well as to process larger chunks of data at once compared to 32-bit processors. 64-bit processing usually provides performance improvements for demanding applications, such as games, graphics/video editors and other professional programs. Not all apps benefit from 64-bit processing, though.

apple_iphone_ipad_ios

For well over a year 64-bit support has been an exclusive competitive advantage of Apple’s iOS platform as well as modern iPhones and iPads. For some reason, Apple has not made 64-bit support mandatory until recently.

Keeping in mind that Google is about to roll-out Android with 64-bit support, it is about time for Apple to ensure that programs designed for iOS actually take advantage of 64-bit capabilities. It will take a long time before the majority of Android applications will support 64-bit computing technology.

Apple continues to sell iPhone 5c and iPad mini with 32-bit application processors, therefore, it is unlikely that the iOS platform will become a 64-bit-only platform any time soon. Apple recommends software to use the default Xcode build setting of “Standard architectures” to build a single binary with both 32-bit and 64-bit code. This means that all apps to be released in the coming quarters, or even years, will support both new and old iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see whether mandatory 64-bit support will actually boost performance of popular iOS apps. Many programs do relatively simple things and do not need to process large amounts of data. Moreover, given the fact that Apple’s mobile devices do not feature 4GB of memory, it is hard to expect even professional apps to get a huge boost there…

Apple on Monday said that it has sold over 10 million iPhone 6 units in three days after the devices were launched last Friday. The record sales were conditioned by broad geographical availability of the new smartphones as well as the fact that many customers were eager to get iPhones with big displays.

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”

As reported earlier this month, demand for the new iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus smartphones exceeds supply. Many of those, who pre-ordered the latest smartphones from Apple will only get their devices next month.

apple_iphone_6_3

Apple’s iPhone 6 features a 4.7” display with 1334*750 resolution, whereas the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a 5.5” screen with 1920*1080 resolution. The novelties are powered by all-new A8 application processor and iOS 8 operating system. The latest smartphones sport new cameras, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, up to 150Mb/s 4G/LTE and other innovations.

Last year Apple sold nine million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c smartphones in the first weekend of avaialbility. The first weekend sales of the previous-generation handsets included sales in China. At present China is absent from the iPhone 6 launch markets.

Market analysts believe that the new iPhone 6 smartphones are going to become the most successful iPhones ever thanks to large screens and new software.

“iPhone 6/6+ is well-positioned to deliver record NTM iPhone unit sales, given the favorable combination of competitive, market and iOS installed base dynamics,” said Tim Arcuri, an analyst with Cowen & Co., reports Tech Trader Daily.

KitGuru Says: Given that Apple has managed to sell 10 million iPhone 6 units in the first weekend without launching them in China, it is safe to say that the demand for the new smartphones greatly exceeds that for their predecessors a year ago.

Foxconn Electronics, the world’s largest contract maker of electronics, plans to start volume production of the next-generation iPhone with a 4.7” display next month. At present it is unclear when the manufacturer intends to begin making the even bigger Apple smartphone with a 5.5” screen.

Bloomberg news agency reports that Apple’s main manufacturing partner will begin to make the eight-generation iPhone with a 4.7” display in July in a bid to ship the device to customers this September. Production of the 5.5” model is more complicated than the smaller version, which results in lower production efficiency that must be overcome before manufacturing volume can be increased, reports the agency.

The iPhone 6 models will receive brand-new design. The new smartphones will be taller and “rounder” than the current iPhone 5S models. The new smartphone will also be based on all-new system-on-chips and will use the iOS 8 operating system.

As previously reported, the release of the eight-generation iPhones has been brought forward. It is believed that the iPhone 6 4.7” will be launched in September, whereas the 5.5” model is expected to be released in October. The report from Bloomberg indicates that Apple is considering a simultaneous launch of the new iPhones.

The iPhones with large screens should help Apple to further gain high-end smartphone market share as many consumers now demand bigger displays and are looking at devices made by rival Samsung Electronics.

Apple and Foxconn did not comment on the news-story.

T-Mobile has just revealed its new scheme to allow potential customers to check out its network. Starting from the 23rd of June, T-Mobile will give you an iPhone 5s for one week, which will let you see if the network's services and availability work for your needs.

The network reckons that one million people will use the test drive service within its first year. In the US, T-Mobile is still a pretty small network and doesn't have as much coverage as AT&T or Verizon, but this new scheme should help get some new customers on board.

T-Mobile

The feature will remain exclusive to the US, much like the network's new upgrade every year scheme. Apple are giving the test drive iPhone 5s handsets to T-Mobile for free. It's a win-win for the network and Apple as many still don't know that the carrier offers the device.

There are some caveats to the deal though, if the iPhone is returned with any damage or with the find my iPhone feature turned on, then T-Mobile will automatically charge you $100. If you keep the phone for longer than seven days, then you will be billed $699.99, which is the full, off contract price of the phone.

KitGuru Says: This sounds like a good idea in principle. Some people switch to a new network only to realize that they get bad signal in their house so at least people can avoid that. However, it would be a shame to see the program exploited, I can imagine a few of those iPhones will go missing.

At the worldwide developers conference (WWDC) on Monday Apple said that shipments of its mobile devices based on the iOS operating system have exceeded 800 million units. According to Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, around 130 million customers bought their first Apple mobile gadget in the past 12 months.

800 million devices include the iPhone smartphones, the iPad media tablets and the iPod touch personal digital media players. Apple first started to sell devices based on the iOS in 2007. Earlier this year it was reported that sales of the iPhone had exceeded 500 million units. Shipments of the iPad, which was first released in 2010, have exceeded 210 million units so far.

Keeping in mind that sales of Apple’s iPhone and iPad are growing, it is likely that the company will supply its billionth iOS-based device less than a year from now.

KitGuru Says: 800 million units is a very respectable number. While it is clearly lower than the amount of Google Android-based devices that have been sold to date, it is necessary to remember that the Android is used by tens (if not hundreds) of manufacturers around the world, whereas Apple supplies the iOS-based devices exclusively.

The rumours about Apple’s plans to introduce its eight-generation iPhone ahead of traditional September timeframe resurrected on Friday, when a China-based media reported that the Cupertino, California-based consumer electronics giant wants to launch its iPhone 6 with 4.7” display in August. In addition, Apple is rumoured to pull in the release of a bigger version of the iPhone 6.

Originally it was expected that Apple would unveil its all-new iPhone 6 with 4.7” display in September and then would follow up with the release of enlarged iPhone 6 with 5.5” screen sometimes in November or December. However, on Friday the Economic Daily News, one of China’s most trustworthy news-papers, reported citing sources in the supply chain that the launch of both models had been brought forward. The iPhone 6 4.7” is now expected to reach the market in August and the iPhone 6 5.5” model is projected to be unveiled in September, reports Reuters news-agency.

Pulling in the release of the new iPhone smartphones by several weeks could mean that Apple wants to sell more iPhones this fiscal year (which ends in late October). It also indicates that the company is confident that its manufacturing partner Foxconn Electronics will be able to quickly ramp up production of the new iPhone to ensure that over ten million of devices will be available for the launch weekend.

A Chinese blogger has published what it is claimed to be the front panel of the next-generation iPhone with enlarged display. The design of the panel resembles that of Apple iPhone smartphones and its existence may confirm that the Cupertino, California-based company is working on larger handsets.

Sina Weibo user jiezhixc has posted a photo (which was republished by AppleInsider) on which a lady with neat manicure (meaning that this is not a Foxconn factory worker) is holding a large white front panel (which resembles an enlarged iPhone panel) next to a space-gray iPhone 5s smartphone. The user claims that the piece belongs to the iPhone 6, which is expected to exist in two versions: with 4.7” display and with 5.5” display. It is unclear whether the panel is the final one, or a prototype.

The design of the alleged Apple iPhone 6 panel resembles that of other Apple smartphones, but features noticeable differences. There are cutouts for light sensor, camera, speaker and Home button. The screen’s bezel seems to be a little thinner compared to the existing models.

apple_iphone_6_panel_alleged

The whole iPhone 5s seems to be a little larger than the screen cutout of the alleged iPhone 6’s front panel, which may mean that the lady on the picture is holding a panel for the 4.7” version of the smartphone. Even in case the panel is not legitimate, it gives an idea regarding the size of the eight-generation iPhone, assuming that Apple does not change its design considerably.

Apple iPhone 6 is rumoured to be released this September in 4.7” version. By the end of the year it is expected that Apple will introduce a 5.5” flavour of the handset. Both smartphones are projected to be based on the A8 application processor and feature a number of hardware and software innovations.

Apple did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Even the iPhone 5s with 4” screen cannot be comfortably used by one hand 100 per cent of time. The version of the iPhone 6 with 4.7” display will be almost impossible to use by one hand most of the time. Steve Jobs used to say that a smartphone should be small enough to control it with a single hand, so 3.5” display is the right size. However, three years after Mr. Jobs passed away it seems that the paradigm is changing even at Apple…

There are plenty of various docs for Apple’s iPhones and iPods, which have different capabilities and look. Apparently, the guys from Hannover, Germany-based Hardwrk company decided to make a dock that would also feel differently and created an iPhone 5 dock made of pure concrete.

The hardwrk Massive Dock dock fits all iPhone 5 models (iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c), it is made of pure concrete, it weighs massive 570 grams, it looks like nothing else and because every stone is unique in structure, each hardwrk dock is unique. Every Massive Dock is inspected by hand, polished, cured and sealed to avoid impurities.

hardwrk-massive-dock-desk

The bottom of the hardwrk Massive Dock features micro-suction-pads, so once it is placed on a flat surface, it adheres itself to it. After this, the iPhone can be mounted and unmounted easily with one hand. Unfortunately, the Apple Lightning connector is not put in place at the factory by the manufacturer, but should be installed by the user himself/herself into a silicone inlay. The latter naturally bends, so in some cases difficulties with docking might occur (at least, theoretically).

hardwrk-massive-dock-solo

While in production, the Massive Docks need to pass several quality control stages. From the blend of the raw material up to the surface finishing, every dock is examined and refined several times until it passes all tests, only then is it packed and shipped. Since each concrete piece has a unique structure and hardens differently, every dock has its own characteristics regarding surface and texture. Each customer will receive his own one of a kind original, but with guaranteed level of quality.

hardwrk-massive-dock-move

The hardwrk Massive Dock may not be the best iPhone 5 dock ever, it does not feature integrated speaker or built-in TRRS connector, it may even scratch your iPhone 5 since concrete is harder than aluminum or polycorbonate (materials of which the iPhone 5 smartphones are made). However, it looks good, it should feel great and every Massive Dock is unique.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgi70MeEzSA']

At €60 including shipping, the dock clearly is a rather expensive one.

KitGuru Says: While the gadget may be expensive overall when buying for yourself, it is certainly is a nice gift idea!

Over the last few days we've seen the launch of the new iPhone 5S and 5C smartphones, as well as the iOS 7 software for Apple devices. With that, there has been a rush of sales for the new products and of upgrades for devices already owned. Ultimately, this led to Apple selling almost ten million new phones in just a couple of days.

According Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, more than nine million new iPhones were sold in total, and that's just the word on the new models. These astonishingly high numbers set a new record in first weekend sales for the popular smartphone designer. The hardware is already close to being completely sold out, meaning that people hoping to pick up an iPhone 5S or 5C after the rush might be in for a bit of a disappointment.

Not only were the new devices so popular, but iOS 7 was downloaded and installed onto 200 million devices on top of the nine million sales. This is yet another record for Apple.

iPhone 5S

I find it hard to ‘think different' when I have the same phone as nine million other people

When the iPhone 5 launched last year only five million units were shifted in the opening weekend. Whether the large increase in sales for this weekend is due to multiple models being released, or the fact that one of them is a budget model remains to be seen.

You can still grab an iPhone 5C, but the 5S model is sold out nearly everywhere due to a lack of stock. If you're lucky you might find one though, so perhaps it's worth shopping around.

KitGuru Says: Don't particularly see the appeal myself, but it certainly seems to be the popular choice right now. Which of the big camps do you guys lie in? Android or Apple?

Apple has put warnings to early adopters of the new iPhone 5S and 5C devices, as it seems that much like the iOS 7 roll out from yesterday; something just hasn't gone quite right. Users of the new smartphone models should expect to run into activation problems, as well as anybody upgrading to iOS 7 this weekend.

A report on Apple Insider reveals that the hardware manufacturer has issued an internal high priority alert, warning staff that the activation servers for the latest mobile devices have been experiencing issues. Those server problems will reflect back at the users attempting to activate their devices for the first time, resulting in unwanted errors.

The plague of issues isn't exclusive to just the iPhone 5S and 5C though, the entire iOS 7 launch has caused a slough of problems for users everywhere as they try to install the latest software on their iPhones and other Apple devices.

iPhone 5S iOS 7

Now with added uselessness

Activation problems galore, it would seem. Considering the rush of customers who want to get their hands on the latest iPhone models, and the stampede of users who just want to downlaod iOS 7, you'd think that Apple would prepare for this kind of traffic. The new mobile devices aren't exactly cheap, and I know that I wouldn't want to purchase one only to have it be as much use as a paperweight for whatever length of time. The firm was expected to shift “five or six million” units this weekend, so why would the hardware manufacturer not prepare for that?

The situation isn't much better when you look at the company's online store, where all iPhone 5S models are on hold until next month due to selling out completely. Retailers everywhere are also facing a shortage of stock, suggesting that Apple doesn't want too much of the product on the market for whatever mysterious reason it might have.

KitGuru Says: Apple is completely aware of how popular the brand name is, and should have a much better idea of what kind of traffic to expect for events such as these. If anything, this is a sloppy and lazy release that I wouldn't expect of a globally recognised brand.

The next iteration of the iPhone from Apple has been predicted to shift huge numbers at the official launch this weekend, but some reports have been coming in that paint a very different picture for the hardware company.

Various mobile operators in the US have reportedly spoken with Allthingsd about the new handset, noting that there is a shortage of stock of the new iPhone 5S, putting unexpected limits on sales across the nation. This ties in with the strange news that the iPhone 5S wasn't available for pre-order, unlike the lower costing 5C model that is being launched alongside the 5S.

One of the mobile networks that spoke up, went as far as to say “We will have grotesquely unavailable inventory,”

iPhone 5S

Red and orange and green and blue [Sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too. Ed]

Apple has yet to comment on the situation, leaving us with only more questions about the limited product. If it has intentionally crippled the supply in order to increase demand, then why do that now?

Coincidentally, retailers have reported that the iPhone 5S interest seems to be lower than was initially expected. The brand has proven wildly popular, and it was expected that orders of the new smartphone would be rather high. It seems that people are more invested in the budget model iPhone 5C though, and 5S sales are going to be affected by that interest.

With stock levels being low across most retailers, it would seem that people are going to have to start queuing up early if they want to make sure that they get their hands on one of the devices. Just, maybe not as early as this guy.

KitGuru Says: This isn't the strangest of scenarios, but I'd still like to hear what Apple has to say. Perhaps there is a justifiable reason for the lack of stock.

Vodafone has announced its pricing plans for Apple's upcoming iPhone 5s smartphone ahead of its release in just three days time, along with potential upgrade options for those that haven't quite reached the end of their contract yet and still want to get in on the latest fruity fashion item.

The mobile network provider was keen to suggest that it would have plenty of stock of Apple's latest hardware, whether you ordered over the phone, online or queued up to buy one in store. However, should that stock run out, Vodafone has pledged to fulfil all orders in a timely fashion.

As well intentioned as that is though, there's no guarantee when a second round of stock will arrive.

I swear if you cross your eyes a bit you can forget which is which.

Since the new 5s supports the 4G network standard, it will be available at launch on one of several price-plan packages: Red 4G ready, Red 4G ready L and Red 4G ready XL. The difference between these are mostly data and price, but there's a couple of extras and the phone pricing changes also.

For the standard ready package, punters will be spending £47 per month, giving them 6GB of monthly data until the end of October, six months of Sky Sports or Spotify Premium, with prices of the phone itself ranging from £79 for the 16GB versions, £149 for the 32GB and £229 for the 64GB model. If you go for the ready L package, it'll cost £52 a month, offer 8GB of data, 24 months of Sky or Spotify and phone prices are reduced to £19, £99 and £159 respectively. At the top end with the XL package, everything is increased again, giving 12GB of data, 24 months of Sky or Spotify and a phone priced at £19, £49 or £99 – all for £57 a month.

All of them are 24 month plans, so don't expect to upgrade again any time soon, though those currently on long term contracts with Vodafone using a iPhone 5, Galaxy SIII or Galaxy note phone can trade in their handset and pay off just 25 per cent of the remaining time to become eligible for an iPhone 5s upgrade.

For those wanting a shorter contract or standard 3G speeds, the costs and packages are a little different:

Financial crippling is totally worth it to have the latest phone for a couple of months… right?

If you thought your girlfriend, or your pal, or even this chick was the biggest Apple fanboy in the world, you haven't heard about XXXPrius, who's already waiting in line in Japan for the iPhone 5S – 10 days before it's released and so far he's the only one there.

“I went ahead and got the first place in line,” he tweeted yesterday (via Kotaku), followed by a whole lot more – obviously he has some time on his hands. He's quite well set up though, with a lawn chair, umbrella, table and a cooler.

sad
“All by my… sayeeeelf”

Normally I'd point out that there's no reason for a guy like this not to simply pre-order the phone online and have it delivered straight to him on release day, but that doesn't look to be possible here as the iPhone 5S is being reported as lacking in pre-orders all over the world, prompting some to suggest that there could be supply issues.

If that turns out to be the case, this guy could very well be the first to get his hands on one. It's not clear why that's important though, as it is, at the end of the day, just a phone.

Apple's iPhone 5s is set for release in the US, EU and Japan on 21st September.

KitGuru Says: I always wondered if this type of thing: what happens when you need a crap? Can anyone explain this to me?

Well the time has finally come – Apple have announced their new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s, with availability from September 20th.

The iPhone 5c is the lower cost version, but it starts at a whopping £469 in the United Kingdom, with the higher price iPhone 5s shipping at a starting point of £549. Still no £200 iPhone for budget users, sad to say.

The iPhone 5c comes in a variety of bright bold colours to appease a wider audience, although we aren't sure that the high end Apple purists will be that impressed.

The iPhone 5c ships at a starting price of £469.00 for the 16GB version, and £549.00 for the 32GB version. you can get the phone in silver, red, yellow, blue and green.

The more expensive iPhone 5s starts at £549.00 for the 16GB version, with a 32GB version available for £629.00 and the price for the 64GB version?  an eye popping, neck crunching £709.00. It will be available in silver, black and champagne/gold (which we imagine will be the most popular version).
screenshot291

The prices are quite staggering, and those people expecting a low cost iPhone from Apple will be walking away with their head down after hearing this news. Still it could be worse, you could be one of these sad people who have been queuing already for 5 days, they have another 10 days to go before parting with a lot of cash to get their hands on a new iPhone.

Kitguru says: If you have £709 to spare, you can walk away with a lovely new 64gb iPhone 5S. bargain.

A Japanese website say they have confirmation that Apple will be calling their new iPhone the iPhone 5S, and that Apple's rumoured low cost iPhone will be known as the iPhone 5C.

Macotakara are saying they know ‘sources in Asia' have confirmed the names are correct. The ‘C' moniker is said to stand for colour with a range of new colour options available at launch. The new range of iPhones should be launched in September according to various sources.

As we reported before, Apple will be releasing a low cost iPhone model to target emerging markets, however this model may not be released at the same time as the flagship update. Apple have been targeting the lower end markets by offering their older models at cut prices, but they want to shift away from this way of selling.

There are also rumours of a fingerprint scanner and a slow motion camera, particularly as a strong of code in the latest iOS7 software package has hinted at a scanner function.

article-2381270-1B104E86000005DC-351_634x264

The code details a user touching the Home button with their thumb. A fingerprint then appears on the screen – this then changes colour to signify a match.

Other code in iOS7 hints that phones running the latest software will be able to record video at a rate of 120 frames per second, up from 30 frames per second in the current iOS build.

iOS7 will also let the user swipe between menus, control the devices screen using head movements and select apps with a swipe.

The Maps applicationw is said to have a new ‘night mode' which will respond to ambient light.

Kitguru says: No iPhone 6 then?
