Update (30/08/17): Earlier this week, sources spoke out stating that Apple's iPhone launch event would be taking place on the 12th of September. Now, just a few days later, O2 has apparently confirmed to retail staff that the new iPhone will hit store shelves on the 22nd of September.

Original Story: After more than a year of leaks and various rumours, Apple will finally make its next batch of iPhones official in a couple of weeks time. Not only will we be seeing an iPhone 7s but there will be a new third-tier iPhone, featuring a complete redesign, ranging from the display to the build materials.

According to sources speaking with WSJ this week, Apple will unveil its three new iPhones on the 12th of September. This date was previously reported as being likely as traditionally, Apple has announced its iPhones between the 6th and 12th of September.

So far, we have heard that these new iPhones will bump up the storage options, with 64GB now coming as standard, with 256GB and 512GB options potentially following. There will be augmented reality-based camera features, as well as the ability to record at 4K in 60 frames per second. We are expecting the iPhone 7s to retain current iPhone 7 level prices but the iPhone 8/iPhone X will be different.

Just last week, a rumour came along claiming that Apple’s OLED iPhone will feature a $999 price tag, making it Apple’s most expensive phone and just slightly jumping over Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8, which launched at $930.

Apple itself has yet to confirm that it is holding an event on the 12th of September but we should expect to see media invites go out fairly soon, particularly now that the news is out there.

KitGuru Says: I’m intrigued to see what Apple does with the iPhone lineup this year. I was thoroughly disinterested in the iPhone 7 largely because rumours seemed to point towards the iPhone 8 being the one to look out for. Now, that is all coming to a head.

The 2017 iPhone launch is less than a month away at this point and we already have a very good idea of what to expect from Apple. However, there are still a few little tidbits of information getting out, including a big change to Apple’s iPhone storage lineup. Reports this week claim that Apple will be bumping up to 64GB for base iPhone models, with 256GB and 512GB options available as well.

We have known for some time now that Apple can be fairly slow when it comes to upgrading iOS devices to higher capacity storage, particularly compared to Android smartphone makers. Fortunately, over the last couple of years it seems like Apple has been improving in that area. We have seen 8GB smartphones disappear entirely, with the iPhone 7 Apple began offering 32GB of storage as the standard and now with this years iPhone we may see that increase yet again.

According to GeekBar on the Chinese site, Weibo, Apple will offer 64GB of storage in the base iPhone 8. Meanwhile, the mid-tier model will bump up to 256GB of storage and the top tier version will offer a staggering 512GB. This would bring the iPhone 7S and iPhone 8 in line with the iPad Pro lineup, which also starts at 64GB for the standard model.

Increased storage will be particularly important with this year’s iPhone as Apple is supposed to be upgrading to 4K cameras on the front and back of the phone. On top of that, iPhone users will be able to record at 4K/60fps for the first time, which will increase video file sizes. Finally, Augmented Reality features may also make an appearance. With that in mind, increasing iPhone storage this year makes perfect sense.

KitGuru Says: We don’t have an exact date for the iPhone announcement event this year but historically, Apple has held it within the first two weeks of September. It will be interesting to see just how many of these early rumours prove true when the time comes.

Apple is no stranger to rumours of delays in the run up to the release of its flagship devices, but recent weeks have seen claims boosted beyond the norm. Recently, Apple is said to have been exploring potential fixes for its OLED shortage but now with all three iPhones yet to hit mass production, Apple's new batch of iPhones may not ship until November.

Economic Daily News has released a report stating Apple's 2017 iPhones are yet to enter mass production. Right now, it is believed that iPhone 7S and 7S Plus will ramp up production a month later than usual, meanwhile the iPhone 8, which will feature an edge-to-edge OLED display, may not begin mass production until even later. This means that we may not potentially be able to get hold of the OLED iPhone until November.

As usual, Foxconn will be handling the bulk of Apple's iPhone assembly, though it will mainly be handling the OLED iPhone. Meanwhile some assistance will be delivered by a company known as Pegatron, which will take care of the iPhone 7S models.

Apparently Foxconn and Pegatron have yet to ramp up to ‘mass production' levels. However, reports surrounding an iPhone delay this year have been circulating for a long time now, so it may not be too surprising.

The delay has been expected, with blame being placed on low yields of new circuit boards, 3D touch pressure-sensing components as well as the OLED display. Apple has since stepped into the supply chain, leasing equipment to its manufacturing partners according to The Korea Herald.

KitGuru Says: With only 4 million units expected by the September release date, paired with rumours indicating software delays for features like the 3D front sensor and wireless charging, it looks like Apple are in for a rough year. Do you have your iPhone pre-ordered? How do you feel about the potential delay?

Over the last month or so, there have been plenty of reports of manufacturing issues for Apple's next iPhone. While the iPhone 7S was expected to still be on-track, it was starting to sound like the iPhone X would slip into 2018. Things appear to have picked up in the production pipeline since then.

According to sources speaking with Economic News Daily, the low manufacturing yields we heard about previously were mostly down to a new circuit board design, which will feature in the iPhone 7S and iPhone X/8/Anniversary Edition. Yields of these boards were worryingly low but apparently over the last few weeks, things have improved considerably.

With things now on the up and up, the report claims that we should see all three iPhones shipping in October this year. This is still later than expected, as Apple tends to announce its iPhones in early September, with shipments going out in mid to late September. However, this hold up may see public availability pushed into October instead.

Apple has not confirmed any of this itself, this is all information supposedly coming out of the supply chain. We'll hear Apple's ‘official word on this in September, when the iPhone event takes place.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully this will be the last of these supply chain reports as there has been quite a bit of conflicting information regarding manufacturing issues over the last few weeks.

A couple of weeks ago, we first began hearing reports from analysts claiming that Apple's upcoming OLED iPhone would be delayed due to issues with production. Now this week, KGI is claiming that mass production may not happen until as late as October/November, missing the usual September time frame for the iPhone launch.

According to Apple analyst KGI Ming-Chi Kuo, production difficulties have arose due to Apple's use of custom components, which seem to be having low yield rates. While the OLED iPhone may be delayed due to difficulties, there will be an iPhone 7S and 7S Plus on time, as you would expect.

According to KGI, the delay could see the higher-end iPhone pushed back by as much as two months. Components causing the holdup include the bezel-less OLED display, the A11 SoC and all new 3D Touch sensor and camera.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 7S will be a more ‘iterative' update over the current model. All three iPhone models are still expected to be announced at an event in September.

KitGuru Says: While there have been a lot of leaks and rumours surrounding the OLED iPhone this year, there is also some conflicting information. So far, the picture we have for Apple's September event is messy, hopefully over the next few months things will start to become a bit clearer.
