According to two recent job listings, it looks like Microsoft is indeed working on a new AI upscaling technology. Expected to rival Nvidia's DLSS and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, Microsoft's AI upscaling technology looks to be based on the DirectX/DirectML API, meaning it should work on both PCs and Xbox consoles.

The two job openings are for Senior Software Engineer and Principal Software Engineer for Graphics, which can be found on Microsoft “Careers” page. The first job opportunity, posted on June 30th, describes the candidate as someone capable of “[implementing] software that incorporates machine learning algorithms for graphics in shipping hardware”, possibly referring to Xbox Series X|S, GPUs and PCs.

The other job opportunity, which was posted on June 18th, states that the chosen candidate will work with “technology related to graphics such as the DirectX API, graphics driver, Machine Learning, shader compiler, PIX tooling, or silicon feature development”.

The company has already shown some demonstrations of its AI Upscaler on Forza Horizon 3, showing some impressive results. If this technology is implemented at the DirectX 12/DirectML API-level, we may end up with an upscaling technology as good as DLSS, without the hardware limiting factors imposed by it.

KitGuru says: As the “owner” of DirectX 12, Microsoft is one of the few companies that can make an AI upscaling technology work on almost any device. Whether that will happen or not still remains to be seen, as a project like this could take years.

If there is one thing Microsoft used to do right, it was make great real time strategy games. Age of Empires, its sequel and the expansions were truly excellent games for the time and still play well today. Age of Mythology wasn't half bad either. But it's been a long time since the software giant made anything that ground breaking for something other than its beloved Xbox, which is why it's pretty exciting to see Microsoft developing a new “instalment in a beloved franchise,” at a new studio dedicated to RTS gaming.

This isn't some big official announcement, but a sneak reveal that came out of a Microsoft job posting for a senior software engineer. The position is for someone looking to “create the next-generation of awesome games for Windows and Xbox!,” as part of the Decisive Games team. The new developer is based in Redmond, WA in the USA and will be “building a studio that will bring the next instalment in a beloved strategy game franchise to the next generation of gamers around the world.”

That could very well mean Age of Empires four.

job

Of course is this is part of the pre-development stage at a new studio, we shouldn't expect anything big for at least two years. You could get an early look at whatever is being worked on if you get the gig though. You'll need to have four years programming experience in C++, as well as two years or more designing and implementing large scale client/server systems.

This is not an entry level position. It will be responsible for leading the real-time gameplay networking, as well as working on aspects such as matchmaking and grouping.

KitGuru Says: As excited I would be by a new Age of Empires, it would need to be modernised and quite drastically different to make me think it could succeed in a contemporary environment. That and I prefer turn based games these days. Far less stressful.

Kim Dotcom's file locker sequel to Megaupload, Mega, is now looking for a chief financial officer ahead of an intended public offering of the company. The hiree will be in charge of readying the firm for its flotation.

Announced by Dotcom just a few hours ago via his twitter feed, a job posting has also appeared on a New Zealand trade website:

A successful applicant “will take control of the finance functions of the business,” which presumably with its multi-million member base already, is building quite a stockpile of cash. The new CFO is also being charged with building a finance department from scratch and putting together a team of people to manage the companies revenue and financial growth. They'll also need to have plenty of experience dealing with capital raising and the IPO process in New Zealand.

They'll also need to have accounting experience for over 10 years and be a “hands on operator,” who's ready to report to the CEO and COO about all ongoing projects.

Not an easy job it seems, but perhaps the most interesting part of this story is that Mega will soon be a publicly traded company. With the time frame listed within the job listing, we know it'll happen sometime within the next 18 months. It seems likely with the way he's operated things in the past, that Dotcom would retain a controlling stake in the firm. He doesn't seem like the kind of individual that would allow his business ideals to be corrupted by other companies buying up a majority share.

KitGuru Says: Mega has shown exponential growth in its first couple months of operation. It'll be interesting to see where it is in a year and a half for the IPO.
