While the VR market may not be the largest segment of the video game industry, there is still plenty of room for the platform, and its games, to be a success. Making the official announcement recently, Job Simulator, the ‘tongue-in-cheek’ simulation title developed and published by Owlchemy Labs, has now sold over 1 million copies. This makes it only the second VR exclusive title to do so – the first being Beat Saber.

Job Simulator originally released for Windows in April of 2016, with the game being later ported to both PSVR and Oculus Quest. The game received mixed reviews upon its release, due mainly to the length of the experience. Despite that, most critics agreed that Job Simulator itself was a great deal of fun. Owlchemy Labs later followed up the game with a sequel: Vacation Simulator.

Commenting on the sales success of Job Simulator, Owlchemy Labs’ CEO Devin Reimer claimed that “Job Simulator going platinum shows that the consumer VR market is capable of generating huge hits. We’re delighted that Job Simulator has found a diverse audience that enjoys our game.

Job simulator isn't the first VR exclusive game to reach platinum status however – that award goes to Beat Saber, which achieved the milestone in March of 2019. The announcement of a second VR exclusive game achieving over 1 million unit sales is a testament to the ongoing growth of the platform.

While currently, VR sales figures are dwarfed by traditional gaming, the platform is still growing, with PlayStation recently announcing that its PSVR headset had sold over 5 million units. It’ll be interesting to see how long it is before a third VR game manages to achieve 1 million unit sales, and what game it’ll be.

It looks like Google is bolstering its virtual reality talent as the company just acquired Owlchemy Labs. The studio is best known for its award winning VR hit, Job Simulator, as well as its most recent game, Rick and Morty VR.

Both Google and Owlchemy Labs have confirmed the deal, though we don't know how much money exchanged hands here. On Owlchemy's side, the studio wants its supporters to know that it will continue to ‘build quality multi-platform games, solve tough problems with a small but absurdly talented team and share its learnings with the community'. Specifically, Owlchemy committed to continue supporting the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PSVR.

On Google's end, the company noted that it is “thrilled to welcome Owlchemy Labs” into the fold. Google noted games like Job Simulator and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality as key reasons for its interest in the studio. Going forward, Google hopes to work with Owlchemy on creating “engaging, immersive games and developing new interaction models across many different platforms”.

Google has been experimenting with virtual reality for a few years now, starting out with Google Cardboard. Last year though, the company began stepping up its efforts with ‘Daydream', a new mobile-based VR platform.

KitGuru Says: Given the fact that Google is trying to establish its own VR platform, it makes sense for the company to acquire some outside talent along the way.

Over the weekend a rumour began circling that the HTC Vive price would be revealed on Monday 22nd February at Mobile World Congress. Despite that looming event, someone broke cover and revealed the price early and now a number of publications have confirmed it, stating that it will be $800 for the whole package and will even work with your smartphone to let you take calls in VR.

Since Oculus announced its $600 (or £530 inc. shipping to the UK) price tag, many have been wondering how high the HTC Vive headset would come in at. Some speculated a thousand dollars, others a price closer to the Rift, but it seemed likely that with the display technology being similar to the Rift CV1, but set to ship with a different tracking solution and two wand controllers, it would always be more expensive.

That has turned out to be the case, though perhaps not by as big a margin as people expected. That said, an extra $200 is still a fair chunk when you consider that to ship to countries like the UK, it will cost another $160 in VAT, and then there are shipping and import taxes. That likely tips the Vive to over $1,000 here, or just over £700.

To help sweeten the deal though, HTC/Valve are bundling Job Simulator and Fantastic Contraption with the Vive and it has been confirmed as capable of linking up with your phone over bluetooth, which means if it rings you can answer and take a call without taking off the headset (thanks UploadVR).

KitGuru Says: The CV1 was initially slated to begin shipping in December last year and then March this year. I find it hard to imagine the Vive shipping in huge numbers early on, even if HTC/Valve can get it out of the door by April. As tempted as I am to switch, I think I'll keep my Rift pre-order until we know more.

HTC announced that it was collaborating with Valve on its SteamVR headset this week and now we have our first game announcement. The first title announced for SteamVR is Job Simulator, but the premise of the title isn't all that bad.

Job Simulator is set in the future, where robots have taken over all of the world's menial tasks. Now in order to learn about how these robots came to be, the humans of 2050 need to simulate the jobs people in the past used to do to understand why the robots were needed.

Job Simulator

So to sum up, Owlchemy Labs' upcoming game is a Job  Simulator, just as the title suggests. Speaking about the new Valve/HTC headset and how it compares to the Oculus Crescent Bay prototype, Owlchemy's Alex Shwartz wrote on Reddit:

“I'm not sure about the difficulty as we approach consumer launch but right now supporting SteamVR and Oculus should be totally doable. I'd guess any company entering the consumer VR space would benefit from content creators who are able to play nicely with multiple VR platforms.”

KitGuru Says: While a job simulator isn't the most exciting concept, the fact that Valve is getting involved more with virtual reality is exciting, as are Shwartz's comments on Valve's headset in comparison to the most recent Oculus Rift.
