The PC GPU market continued to grow in 2021 despite supply constraints. Compared to Q1 2020, GPU shipments increased by 35 percent (year-on-year) in the first quarter of this year, coming close to matching Q4 2020 sales, avoiding the new-year drop off that we typically expect to see.

According to analysis from Jon Peddie Research, the PC GPU market, which includes discrete graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD, reached 119 million units shipped in Q1 2021. Speaking of AMD and Nvidia, both companies saw market share changes over the quarter, with Nvidia growing by 0.62 percent compared to Q4 2020, meanwhile AMD's overall market share percentage reportedly decreased by 0.12 percent quarter-to-quarter.

An interesting highlight to note is that between 2020 and 2025, discrete GPUs are expected to grow and be found in 26 percent of PCs shipped globally, reaching a total of 3,333 million units. The CPU market also seems to be growing, with a 39 percent increase in units shipped year-on-year.

Shipments of desktop graphics cards sold by board partners like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Sapphire and others, saw an increase of 7 percent between Q4 2020 and Q1 2021.

We are likely to see some additional changes in Q2 and Q3 2021, as Nvidia has just launched the new RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti graphics cards, meanwhile, AMD has begun shipping Radeon RX 6000M series GPUs for laptops.

KitGuru Says: The pandemic has led to a huge increase in demand for PCs and components like discrete graphics cards. Unfortunately, while more units are being shipped, meeting this increased demand continues to be a challenge.

Sales of graphics cards for desktop PCs decreased once again in the second quarter of 2015, according to data from Jon Peddie Research. Market share of Advanced Micro Devices also hit a new low during the quarter.

Shipments of discrete graphics adapters for desktops dropped to 9.4 million units in Q2 2015, which is minimum amount in more than ten years. According to JPR, sales of graphics cards dropped 16.81 per cent compared to the previous quarter, whereas sales of desktop PCs decreased 14.77 per cent. The attach rate of add-in graphics boards (AIBs) to desktop PCs has declined from a high of 63 per cent in Q1 2008 to 37 per cent this quarter. Average sales of graphics cards have been around 15 million units per quarter in the recent years, but declined sharply in 2014.

Nvidia continued its dominance in the market of desktop discrete graphics cards. Market share of the company increased to 81.9 per cent, an all-time high. By contrast, sales of AMD Radeon graphics adapters decreased to a minimum in more than 10 years. The share of AMD dropped to 18 per cent in Q2 2015, which is the lowest share that AMD had in history. The highest share of desktop discrete market that AMD ever had was 55.5 per cent back in Q3 2004, according to Jon Peddie Research. AMD shipped around 35 per cent or desktop discrete graphics processing units in the last four years. AMD’s share began to contract sharply after Nvidia introduced its GeForce GTX 970 and 980 graphics cards in Q3 2014. In about a year AMD lost 20 per cent of market share it controls.

Note: Some numbers are estimates.

JPR claims that while the market of desktop AIBs is shrinking, sales of expensive graphics cards used by gamers are increasing.

“However, in spite of the overall decline, somewhat due to tablets and embedded graphics, the PC gaming momentum continues to build and is the bright spot in the AIB market,” said Jon Peddie, the head of JPR.

AMD’s quarter-to-quarter total desktop graphics cards unit shipments decreased 33.3 per cent. Nvidia’s quarter-to-quarter unit shipments decreased 12 per cent.

KitGuru Says: It is noteworthy that AMD is losing market share despite the fact that it has rather competitive graphics processing units. Further improvements of integrated graphics processors will decrease sales of add-in graphics boards.

Nvidia Corp. has managed to increase its share in the market of standalone graphics cards for personal computers, according to Jon Peddie Research. The market of graphics adapters for desktops in Q1 2015 decreased again to a new low in years, which is an alarming sign for developers of graphics processing units and makers of graphics boards.

Shipments of graphics cards in the first quarter of 2015 decreased to 11.3 million units, an 8.79 per cent drop quarter over quarter. On a year-to-year basis, JPR found that total AIB shipments during the quarter fell 19.41 per cent, which is more than desktop PCs, which sales fell 6.52 per cent.

artwork_graphics_cards

As expected, sales and market share of Advanced Micro Devices’ Radeon graphics cards declined in the first quarter as the company and its partners were trying to sell-off inventory that had been shipped earlier. AMD’s quarter-to-quarter total desktop graphics cards shipments decreased by whopping 14.6 per cent. By contrast, Nvidia managed to increase its market share to 77.5 per cent in Q1 2015, a record high for the company in the recent years. Nonetheless, since the market was generally weak, sales of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards for desktops also dropped by 7 per cent sequentially.

jpr_q1_2015_aibs

According to analysts from Jon Peddie Research, shipments drop of add-in graphics cards is seasonally understandable and everything could have been worse. Still, the overall trend is not good for discrete desktop graphics adapters: the attach rate of graphics boards to desktop PCs has declined from a high of 63 per cent in Q1 2008 to 37 per cent in Q1 2015. Nevertheless, gamers continue to buy expensive graphics cards to enjoy the latest titles.

“However, in spite of the overall decline, somewhat due to tablets and embedded graphics, the PC gaming momentum continues to build and is the bright spot in the AIB market,” said Jon Peddie, the head of JPR.

KitGuru Says: Given the lack of any announcements from AMD in the second quarter of 2015, do not expect many changes in shipments or rankings in Q2 as well. Nvidia will continue dominating the market of discrete desktop graphic cards this quarter and only sometimes in Q3 2013 AMD will finally be able to boost its sales.

The first quarter of 2015 is not over, but manufacturers of various computer components can already make conclusions about demand for their products during the period. A media report citing makers of graphics cards suggests that sales of discrete desktop graphics adapters may hit record low levels in Q1 2015.

Shipments of standalone graphics cards in the first quarter of 2015 are projected to decrease by whopping 20 – 25 per cent quarter-over-quarter, reports DigiTimes citing sources in the industry. The decline from Q4 to Q1 is unprecedented. According to Jon Peddie Research, shipments of graphics add-in-boards (AIBs) decreased 6.7 per cent sequentially in Q1 2014, whereas the 10-year average drop is 3.2 per cent.

JPR recently found that around 12.4 million discrete desktop graphics adapters for desktop computers were shipped by various manufacturers in Q4 2014. If the DigiTimes’ report is correct, then sales of graphics cards will drop to 9.3 – 9.92 million units this quarter, which will be the first time in the recent history, when quarterly shipments of graphics adapters will drop to below 10 million units per quarter. Traditionally, sales of graphics cards are also not strong in the second quarter, hence, further declines are possible.

asus_rog_poseidon_geforce_gtx_980_3

The report claims that the recent scandal with specifications of Nvidia Corp.’s GeForce GTX 970 graphics card slowed down demand for such adapters as customers preferred to wait until Nvidia drops the price of the graphics solution. It is noteworthy that the recent launch of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 960 graphics card did not stimulate sales significantly.

Nvidia currently dominates the market of discrete desktop graphics cards with 76 per cent share, according to JPR. Advanced Micro Devices commands 24 per cent of the market.

AMD and Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Looks like the times are not exactly good for graphics cards business. Considering the fact that AMD will only introduce its new lineup of graphics adapters in June, do not expect sales of discrete AIBs to improve until late Q2 or Q3. In fact, since the third quarter is traditionally good for sales of graphics cards, it will be not be easy to determine whether the new Radeon graphics adapters or seasonality will drive demand.

As expected, Nvidia Corp. managed to increase its desktop GPU market share lead over Advanced Micro Devices in the fourth quarter of 2014 as a result of successful launch of its GeForce GTX 970/980 “Maxwell” products as well as because of AMD’s continued troubles in the channel. Declines of AMD Radeon sales are even more alarming because the market of desktop add-in-boards was down significantly last quarter, according to Jon Peddie Research.

Total AIB shipments decreased by 0.68 per cent sequentially to 12.4 million units from the previous quarter, which was not that bad. Unfortunately, on a year-to-year basis, JPR found that total AIB shipments during the quarter fell whopping 17.52 per cent. According to Jon Peddie Research, the market behaved according to past years with regard to seasonality, nothing was unexpected, which indicates that the market of add-in graphics cards in general is shrinking.

artwork_graphics_cards

AMD’s quarter-to-quarter total desktop graphics adapters unit shipments decreased 16 per cent in Q4 2014 and the company’s share dropped to 24 per cent, which is a minimal figure in many years. By contrast, Nvidia’s quarter-to-quarter unit shipments increased 5.5 per cent and the company continues to hold a dominant market share position at 76 per cent.

jpr_aib_mkt_shares_q4_2014

Jon Peddie Research claims that the market of graphics adapters stabilized in the Q4 2014 and did not decline significantly from the prior quarter, however, year-over-year drops indicate that more and more customers prefer integrated graphics adapters, which is a bad news for AMD, Nvidia and 48 suppliers of graphics adapters. The attach rate of discrete graphics adapters to desktop PCs has declined from a high of 63 per cent in Q1 2008 to 36 per cent in Q4 2014.

jpr_aib_attach_rate

But while the popularity of standalone desktop graphics adapters is declining, gamers continue to buy expensive graphics cards to play the latest titles. As a result, GPU suppliers continue to invest in development of new graphics processors.

“The gaming PC segment, where higher-end GPUs are used, was a bright spot in the market in the quarter,” said Jon Peddie, the head of JPR. “Nvidia’s Maxwell GPUs continued to show strong sales, lifting the ASPs for the discrete GPU market.”

KitGuru Says: While shipments of AMD were down significantly in the quarter despite of numerous price-cuts and other actions, they did not fall dramatically, which is a good news. Unfortunately, we still have no idea when AMD’s share starts to rebound. Obviously, it is hardly good for the market, when Nvidia outsells AMD three to one on the market of discrete desktop GPUs.

Sales of discrete graphics processing units (GPUs) for both desktop and laptop computers were down in the first quarter because of seasonality, according to Jon Peddie Research, a leading market tracker. Nvidia Corp. managed to remain the king of discrete GPUs, whereas AMD remained the No. 2.

As mainstream PCs continue their long-lasting transition to integrated graphics processors, which are getting better every year, shipments of discrete GPUs are declining. Total discrete GPU (desktop and notebook) shipments from the last quarter decreased 11.5 per cent, according to JPR. Sales of standalone GPUs also declined 14.3 per cent from Q1 2013, the market tracker claims.

jpr_desktop_gpu_q1_2014

JPR found that desktop add-in-board (AIB) shipments during the first quarter of 2014 behaved according to past years with regard to seasonality. Sales of desktop graphics cards decreased 6.7 per cent from the last quarter (the 10-year average is -3.2 per cent) and 0.8 per cent from the Q1 2013 Total AIB shipments in Q1 2014 dropped to 14 million units, a decline of 0.8 per cent compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Both AMD and Nvidia experienced around 6.6 per cent drop in sales of standalone GPUs for desktop PCs.

On the discrete notebook GPU market the situation was slightly more favourable for Nvidia and less favourable for AMD: Nvidia’s shipments decreased 14.5 per cent, whereas AMD’s sales declined 21.8 per cent.

Nvidia dominates sales of desktop GPUs as well as notebook GPUs thanks to the GeForce brand recognition and contracts with notebook OEMs.

Jon Peddie Research reports that the gaming PC segment, where higher-end discrete graphics processing units are used, was a bright spot in the market in Q1 2014. Both Nvidia and AMD said sales of their higher-end GPUs were strong, lifting the average selling prices for the discrete GPU market.

jpr_desktop_gpu_historical

JPR has been tracking discrete AIB shipments quarterly since 1987. The volume of those graphics cards peaked in 1999, reaching 114 million units. In 2013 the market shrunk to 65 million units. It is possible that sales of standalone graphics adapters this year will contract again.

KitGuru Says: It is not a secret that the discrete GPU market is on its decline because integrated graphics processors are gaining performance and functionality. It is also logical that Nvidia manages to win more designs with notebook makers than AMD since many laptop manufacturers try to avoid installation of AMD Radeon GPUs into Intel-based designs. What is a bit alarming is that after multiple quarters of offering free games with its desktop Radeon graphics cards, AMD still cannot win a significant chunk of the desktop AIB market from its arch-rival.

Since shipments of personal computers in the first quarter of the year dropped again both sequentially and annually, it is not surprising that sales of graphics adapters (both discrete and integrated) also contracted in the Q1 2014. Advanced Micro Devices suffered most from the declines and its overall share of the graphics adapters market dropped. GPU sales of Intel and Nvidia also decreased, but they either increased or maintained their market shares.

According to Jon Peddie Research, a leading graphics adapters market tracker, shipments of all types of graphics processing units (GPUs) were down 11.6 per cent quarter-to-quarter, and down 4 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. Shipments of graphics processors declined to around 102.2 million units, down 4 million units from Q1 2013, which suggests that declines are stabilizing (i.e. sales of graphics adapters from Q1 2012 to Q1 2013 dropped whopping 15.8 million units).

jpr_total_gpu_historical

Year-to-year in Q1 2014 AMD’s overall PC GPU shipments decreased 22.1 per cent, Intel’s graphics sales declined 5.6 per cent, Nvidia’s GPU shipments dropped 12.7 per cent, and others (i.e., Via Technologies/S3 Graphics, SiS, Matrox Graphics, etc.) essentially went away.

jpr_total_gpu_q1_2014

AMD’s overall PC graphics sales decreased 18.2 per cent quarter-over-quarter. The company’s shipments of desktop accelerated processing units (APUs) dropped 21.9 per cent from the previous quarter; by contrast, sales of the company’s APUs for notebooks increased 3.7 per cent sequentially. AMD’s discrete desktop GPU shipments dropped 6.6 per cent and notebook discrete graphics chips shipments declined 21.8 per cent in Q1 compared to the Q4 2013.

JPR claims that around 67 per cent of AMD’s microprocessors feature integrated graphics cores. The company continues to ship 880G/980G core-logic sets with integrated Radeon HD 4250 graphics engines (graphics adapters integrated into chipsets are also called IGPs [integrated graphics processors]), though their share is declining, claims Jon Peddie Research. The analysts believe that one of the reasons for AMD’s market share decline in Q1 2014 was a decrease of IGP sales.

Shipments of Intel’s integrated graphics adapters declined 7.9 per cent quarter-over-quarter. Sales of the company’s desktop processors with embedded graphics cores decreased by 5.1 per cent from the previous quarter; sales of Intel’s CPUs for notebooks dropped by 9.7 per cent. According to Jon Peddie Research, 99 per cent of Intel’s non-server processors have integrated graphics cores.

Nvidia’s sales of graphics adapters for PCs decreased 10.4 per cent quarter-over-quarter. Nvidia’s desktop discrete shipments declined 6.6 per cent from the Q4, whereas the company’s notebook discrete shipments decreased 14.5 per cent sequentially.

In Q1 retailers traditionally minimize their purchases and to unload what they bought for the holiday season and what they did not sell. As a result, sales of PC companies in the first quarter are seasonably lower compared to other quarters. This year shipments of PCs and GPUs declined in Q1 as well, but the drop was not alarming, JPR claims.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The overall trend of the graphics adapters market resembles the general trajectory of the PC market, which is on a decline these days Therefore, the results of Q1 were not really surprising. What was rather unexpected is AMD’s shipments of chipsets with integrated graphics for outdated processors originally released in 2009 – 2011 timeframe. Sales of such low-end devices partly explains why AMD’s microprocessor and core-logic division cannot make money and suffers from low average selling prices.

Although Advanced Micro Devices has been adding free games to its desktop add-on graphics cards for some time now, its market share continues to significantly trail that of Nvidia. According to recently released data from Jon Peddie Research, when it comes to discrete desktop graphics processing units (GPUs), Nvidia continues to outsell AMD by millions of units and has been doing so for years now.

Jon Peddie Research claims that the total available market of desktop add-in-boards (AIBs) in Q4 2013 was around 15 million units, which was only 3 per cent higher compared to the previous quarter. Moreover, the attach rate of AIBs to desktop PCs has dropped from a high of 63 per cent in Q1 2008 to 42.8 per cent in Q4 2013 (which was even lower than 43.4 per cent in Q3 2013). A good news for the market is that sales of dual-GPU graphics cards as well as adoption of multi-GPU configurations increased in the Q4 2013, reports JPR.

jpr_aid_shipments_q4_2013

Shipments of AMD Radeon graphics cards for desktop decreased 3 per cent in Q4 2013 compared to the previous quarter, according to JPR. By contrast, Nvidia’s quarter-to-quarter desktop GPU unit shipments increased 3.6 per cent. Nvidia continued to hold a dominant market share position at nearly 65 per cent. By contrast, AMD shipped 35 per cent of discrete desktop graphics processors.

While the market of desktop discrete graphics cards is virtually controlled by AMD and Nvidia, companies like Matrox Graphics and S3 Graphics continue to ship standalone GPUs, albeit, in very small quantities, according to findings of JPR. In total, there are around 51 suppliers of add-in graphics cards worldwide.

KitGuru Says: The reasons why AMD cannot capture a significant chunk of the market away from Nvidia is completely unclear. When Nvidia GeForce could offer higher performance across the board, then the AMD Radeon was naturally less popular. But while now there is performance parity between competing solutions, higher popularity of the GeForce cannot be easily explained.
