Ever since Half-Life: Alyx was first announced as a VR-only title, long time fans of the series have been hoping that modders would add keyboard and mouse support to the game. Not only does at least one Valve programmer think that such a mod is inevitable, but support for keyboard and mouse has already been found baked into the game.

Dataminers have been quick to dig through Half-Life: Alyx's files, with ValveNewsNetwork showing off the game's hidden ‘developer mode' on Twitch, which does include keyboard and mouse input, so you can walk around the game world in flatscreen mode. However, there are notable issues, including the inability to jump, no sprinting and the fact that you don't see your hands or weapon model despite being able to fire weapons.

Obviously, Valve never intended for this to be a keyboard and mouse game, explaining its very limited functionality in the developer mode. However, as programmer Robin Walker predicts, it is only a matter of time before modders figure out a way to run the game without VR, an effort that should further showcase why Alyx is a VR-only game in the first place:

“What I’m confident will happen is that when people get that butchered version, and they’ll have lost all the things that we’ll have got from moving to VR, they will then understand very clearly why we made that choice”.

KitGuru Says: I've had the chance to play some Half-Life: Alyx this week and it is an incredible game. There are certain mechanics that wouldn't translate to keyboard and mouse, but I also think that there are plenty of people who would be fine with a traditional gameplay experience just to experience the story first-hand. Have any of you played Half-Life: Alyx yet? Would you be intrigued by a non-VR version?

PUBG officially began rolling out to Android and iOS users in the west last week, and while the mobile version is intended to be played using on-screen touch controls, there are ways around that. There are plenty of PUBG Mobile players currently using various devices to run the game on larger displays and use keyboard/mouse input, giving them a pretty major advantage.

There are multiple ways to enable keyboard and mouse support for PUBG on mobile. Ranging from installing the app on a Chromebook, to paring up bluetooth devices or simply running an Android emulator on PC. There are already several popular YouTube videos with hundreds of thousands of views showing the mobile version running on PC, making it much easier to dominate rounds.

There are two downsides to this for PUBG Corp, for starters, if people can just emulate the mobile version of the game for free, then there is less reason to spend £20 on the Steam version. The second downside is that if keyboard/mouse usage becomes too widespread, then it can ruin the game for those actually playing on smartphones.

PUBG Mobile already caught some flack last week after players discovered that the first few online matches were filled with bots rather than real players. However, this was explained as a way to get new players used to the touchscreen controls before throwing them in with 99 other real players.

KitGuru Says: Keyboard/mouse users have been a common complaint on the Xbox One version of PUBG too. It will be interesting to see if the developers decide to do anything about this, as it does seem to be a growing problem. Do you guys think keyboard/mouse usage should be allowed in PUBG Mobile? Or does it give too much of a competitive advantage?

One of the biggest downsides to playing competitive shooters on a console is the lack of keyboard and mouse, controllers just don't deliver the same level of speed and accuracy. However, that is set to change a bit on the PS4 as peripheral maker, Hori, is all set to release the TAC4 wired keyboard and mouse for the console.

As you can see from the image, it isn't a full sized keyboard, it only gives users the necessary buttons and rather than being presented with WASD, you get a set of arrow keys along with keys for each controller button. The mini-keyboard even has a D-pad.

The mouse has some extra buttons of its own. Just like in PC shooters, the left and right mouse buttons will activate aim and shoot. Though this mouse also comes with a ‘quick' button, square and L2+R2 on the side by the thumb groove.

This is a Sony licensed product so it will all be supported natively by the PS4, rather than last generation's keyboard and mouse converters, which required the extra peripherals to hook up to a controller in order to emulate its functions. The TAC4 releases on the 9th of October this year, it is up on Amazon UK right now for £87.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see if this keyboard and mouse set will offer superior control in shooters over the standard Dual-Shock 4. Though it seems Sony may limit functionality to a few peripherals, while the Xbox One is set to get native keyboard and mouse support.
