Following the recent announcement that Sony is going to acquire Bungie for $3.6 Billion, the console manufacturer’s executives have been discussing the award-winning studio – with PlayStation Head Hermen Hulst even revealing that the PlayStation-exclusive Killzone was directly inspired by Halo.

PlayStation Studios Head Hermen Hulst recently sat down to talk to Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications, about the recent Bungie acquisition. Discussing Bungie’s overall value as a developer, Hulst claimed to be “impressed by the production values from them, in terms of technology, graphics, performance capture, sound and music…all of that is really top-class at Bungie”. Coincidentally – or not so coincidentally – these are all talents which align nicely with Sony’s multimedia plans for Destiny.

Speaking on gameplay and game design, Hermen Hulst said “everyone in gaming knows that Bungie’s gameplay is one of the benchmarks. It always feels fluid, it’s always very responsive, easy to pick up and hard to put down. They’ve either started or perfected so many innovations in their games,” later revealing that “I follow their design choices very closely since, obviously as you know, I was working on Killzone while Bungie was developing Halo.”

While it was always somewhat clear that Killzone and Resistance were both developed in an attempt for Sony to have their own ‘Halo’ it is interesting to see that Killzone was directly designed with Halo-like principles in mind.

Concluding his thoughts on Bungie, Hulst said “I’ve spent a lot of time with folks like Jason Jones and Pete Parsons, and some of the senior team over at Bungie. And let me tell you that everyone’s very excited for Bungie and PlayStation Studios to share ideas, share some of our battle scars as well. And really, just learn from each other.”

It is interesting to see PlayStation treating and speaking of Bungie more like an equal and less like a subsidiary. Admittedly, Bungie is the perfect studio to fill the gaps in PlayStation’s first-party roster, and so it will be exciting to see what Bungie and PlayStation create together.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Hulst’s statements? What are your thoughts on the future of Bungie? Did you prefer Killzone or Resistance? Let us know down below.

While Guerrilla Games is still basking in the success of its single-player smash hit Horizon: Zero Dawn, the studio is looking ahead towards its next project. In what seems like an attempt to return to its multiplayer roots, the firm has been snapping up veterans known for their work on Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege.

ResetEra user DriftingSpirit made note of the trend, beginning with the return of Simon Larouche, who previously left Guerrilla Games in 2009 after crafting numerous levels for Killzone 2. Climbing the ladder, Larouche acted as Ubisoft’s Lead Game Designer for Siege before becoming the game’s director ahead of its launch. He also briefly worked at Eidos Montréal as an Online Gameplay Director for an undisclosed title.

Larouche’s colleague, Chris Lee joined eight months later, bringing his experience as Rainbow Six Siege’s game designer to Guerrilla Games. Included within Lee’s list of talents is his experience with “multi-phased round match, group based matchmaking, support mode, spectator cam and team systems,” as well as varied PvP modes and social features.

It’s uncertain whether or not Guerrilla Games will be returning to the Killzone series next, developer a Horizon: Zero Dawn sequel or simply move onto a brand new IP, however there is increasing evidence that it will house online elements. Given Siege’s unique continuously developed structure, it’s entirely possible that the developer is eyeing up the Games as a Service market.

KitGuru Says: Not everyone is a fan of Games as a Service, however I do think Ubisoft has mostly nailed it with Siege, minus the horrendous premium on paid cosmetics. Given that the Decima Engine is holding up well, a continuously supported online game could benefit quite well. What do you think of Guerrilla Games’ recent changes?

Guerrilla Games hit it out of the park last year with Horizon Zero Dawn on the PS4. The studio reinvented itself in one swoop, and now, the team would like to capitalise on its success by moving to a larger office with the goal of making new games faster.

Guerrilla Games is moving to a new five-floor office in the Telegraad complex. After the move, Guerrilla will almost double its employee count, which will help create large games at a faster rate. Speaking with Parool, Guerrilla Games Managing Director, Hermen Hulst, explained that work on Horizon Zero Dawn took six and a half years.

With a new office in place and a larger pool of employees, Hulst hopes that Guerrilla will be able to create games in a shorter time span. The aim is to be able to push out a new game within three years rather than six.

Horizon Zero Dawn was highly praised at launch and the game's expansion kept people coming back in December. We don't know if there will be a sequel yet, but chances are, Horizon Zero Dawn is going to be a new staple franchise for Sony, with Guerrilla Games at the helm.

KitGuru Says: It’s clear that Guerrilla Games have a lot offer both Sony and gamers going forward, its good to see they are expanding and will be releasing more quality games, in a shorter timeframe. Are Guerrilla Games one of your favourite developers?

The class-action lawsuit put together against Sony for falsely listing Killzone Shadowfall as a native 1080p game has been dismissed. The goal was to sue Sony for $5 million because the multiplayer component of the game ran at 960×1080 rather than the full 1920×1080 resolution.

According to Courthouse News, Judge, Edward Chen, signed a joint stipulation that dismisses the lead plaintiff's lawsuit with prejudice. Each party will need to take care of their own legal costs, but the exact terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

This does mean that those who bought Killzone Shadowfall will not be able to claim any money back for the 1080p mix up. Class-action lawsuits rarely benefit anyone but the lawyers involved, which is especially true in this case as they are the only ones getting paid after all of this.

Either way, it is another bill Sony doesn't need to worry about, which it is probably thankful about due to its poor financial situation.

KitGuru Says: While it is true that Sony did falsely list Killzone Shadowfall as native 1080p for the full game, the mix up did not warrant a lawsuit. Do you guys think this lawsuit deserved to be dismissed?

A judge has rejected Sony's bid to get a class action lawsuit against the company dismissed. The lawsuit aims to refund those that bought PS4 launch title, Killzone Shadow Fall, after it was revealed that the game's multiplayer component did not run at 1080p resolution, despite all advertising claiming otherwise.

Sony attempted to get this lawsuit dismissed based on a number of counter arguments but ultimately could not convince the court. However, according to Courthouse News, the original complaint against Sony needs to be slightly ammended before the suit can proceed.

Killzone-Shadow-Fall-4

Back in March, an analysis performed by Digital Foundry revealed that Killzone Shadow Fall's multiplayer ran at 960×1080 resolution, which is significantly lower than full 1080p (1920×1080). The lawsuit's chief plaintiff, Douglas Ladore, claimed back in August that “gamers quickly noticed and complained that Killzone's multiplayer graphics were blurry to the point of distraction.”

Judge, Edward Chen, rejected Sony's bid to dismiss the suit because all but one of the counter arguments “either ignore important factual allegations… or they require this court to construe the complaint in the light most favorable to Sony”.

The one counter argument that was accepted (which has not been disclosed yet), means that the plaintiff now has 30 days to amend his claim and proceed with the lawsuit.

KitGuru Says: Sony is not having a very good month at all. However, in this case, Sony did heavily market Killzone Shadow Fall as a 1080p title, when it in-fact isn't. Sony will likely come up with a settlement agreement some time next year to make this go away. What do you guys think of this?

Last month we wrote about Killzone: Shadowfall being around 50GB in size, well it turns out that before Sony swooped in and saved the day, the game was bordering on 290GB. Those are some pretty hefty file sizes considering we're moving more towards being all digital.

The bulk of those files are new high resolution textures, Guerrilla's technical director Michiel van der Leeuw told Eurogamer: “I think we're probably a lot larger than the other cross-generation games, because we have no assets that have been made to a lower spec.” The technical director also took the opportunity to point out that the levels are around 10 times bigger than those found in Killzone 3.

Killzone-shadow-fall-ps4-wallpaper-in-hd

The confirmed file size of the game is now 39.7GB but as I already mentioned, it was a lot bigger at one point. During testing the developers got 180GB worth of the game generated until the disc image generator broke, van der Leeuw said “If we would have put all the levels in, which we didn't, because then the disc image generator broke, it would have been around 290 gigs of data.”

Once the disc image generator broke, the team had to re-architect how they dealt with data and optimize the disc access pattern. “We had to completely re-architect how we deal with data, and we did a lot of work. Sony made special libraries for us because we were the first ones hitting these sort of problems. I think it's something that a lot of people will need to be doing in the future.”

If you suffer from slow Internet or you feel like waiting for a 50GB file to download would be a bit much then Sony has the answer: the Playstation 4 has the ability to play as you download but obviously the download has to have a bit of a head start. You will be able to play Killzone: Shadowfall once the first 7.5GB is downloaded, that is still a bit of a wait if you aren't running off of a fiber optic line but hopefully this new demand for bandwidth will force ISP's to start upgrading line speeds.

KitGuru Says: It looks like the next generation is going to continue bringing in massive file sizes, so those default 500GB drives will soon fill up. If you're planning on going next-gen soon, it might not be a bad idea to budget for a new 2.5″ replacement Hard Drive or external option. I don't think it'll take long for both Sony and Microsoft to release 1TB versions of these consoles.

As we all know, both Sony and Microsoft chose to release next gen systems with 500GB HDD's. That doesn't sound so bad at first, but UK managing director of Sony, Fergal Gara, has just revealed that Killzone: Shadow fall will require 50GB of space to install. That's huge by anyone's standards- no wonder Sony wasn't pushing digital only gaming.

Fergal assured gamers however, that while digital gaming was growing, people looking to take advantage of downloading the game, wouldn't need to wait for the whole thing before playing – they could get started much sooner than that.

“The Play as you Download functionality, for example, means you don't need the whole file before you go. This is a little bit counterbalanced by the fact that the files themselves are getting bloody big. Killzone: Shadow Fall is an uber file–I think it's cracking on for 50GB. It looks it, too, when you see it.”

You could let the download sit there for a while until it's about 10-20% done and then start playing as the download continues. The only downside is, if you're on a slower connection you may catch up to the download faster than it can finish and we don't know if this will cause any graphical errors or weird game bugs.

For those worried about their hard drives filling up fast with massive game files, don't worry, like the PS3, the PS4 hard drive will be upgradeable. If you plan on mostly downloading your games from the PSN store then maybe you should think about budgeting for a 1TB HDD to last you longer.

Killzone: Shadow Fall will launch with the PS4 on the 29th of November.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezTaAExI-FU']

KitGuru Says: I wasn't expecting the game file to be so big, but the play as you download feature should alleviate some of the waiting time for digital buyers. Being able to upgrade the HDD helps too as you will always be able to get more space. Were you surprised at how big Killzone is?

Yesterday it was revealed that one of the most anticipated launch titles for the Xbox one would run at 1600×900 natively and instead be upscaled to 1080p. Aaron Greenberg, chief of staff for devices and studios at Microsoft, mistakenly tweeted that both Forza 5 and Ryse: Son of Rome would run at native 1080p, but then later updated his answer after his team corrected him. While Forza 5 will run native 1080p, Ryse will not. He did take it upon himself however, to remind everyone that the 1080p upscale will still look amazing.

Ryse_box_art

Previously developers claimed the Playstation 4 was about 50 per cent more powerful managing 30 frames per second at 1920×1080 while the Xbox one struggled to keep up at 1600×900. This may hold true, while multi platform games will be developed to play the same across the board, exclusives like Ryse: Son of Rome may run at a lower resolution and instead be upscaled, while we may see more native 1080p exclusives on the Playstation 4. Killzone shadowfall for example, will run at native 1080p at 30 frames per second.

KitGuru Says: Us pc gamers like to take jabs at the consoles for things like this but the truth is, consoles are developed for the average consumer who doesn't necessarily care about the highest resolution available or the difference between 30 frames and 60 frames per second. If you are a pc gamer who is looking for a console, wait a while and see which one has the exclusives you want to play the most rather than what resolution a console plays at.
