Amazon have released a web based application which allows the end user to read Kindle books directly from Safari and Chrome browsers, which includes the version of Safari which is used on the Apple iPad.

TechCrunch have reported on the software – called the Kindle Cloud Reader, however Amazon have kept it surprisingly low profile.

Making such a move makes good business sense, because the application will let the end user read and buy books online which having to pay Apple a 30% fee for every book it sells via the application. Users can even download the books for offline reading later.

Amazon also changed their Kindle program for the iPad and iPhone which moves the user to the browser rather than buying directly from the software. This means they can forfeit the 30% charge.

We haven't tried the software yet ourselves, but MG Siegler at Techcrunch says that it ‘works great'.

Kitguru says: A clever way for Amazon to stop paying Apple fees.
