For many, PUBG was the first battle royale game they played, with the title breaking records and shifting the gaming landscape for quite a while following its launch back in 2017. Since then, industry trends have shifted away from BR games, with extraction shooters seemingly being the new hotness. In chasing these trends, the PUBG team have now announced that they are working on an extraction shooter titled ‘PUBG: Black Budget’.

As reported by ‘Insider-Gaming’ PUBG developers Krafton announced during their most recent financial call that the team is working on an extraction shooter known as Project Black Budget. Little else is known about the project besides the fact that it is slated to launch some time during the 2nd half of 2024.

As mentioned, PUBG was one of the pioneers of the battle royale genre, with countless replicas attempting to overthrow the record-breaking title. It wouldn’t be until the overwhelming success of Fortnite that PUBG began to lose some of its cache.

With Krafton being far from the first studio to announce that they are working on an extraction shooter, it will be interesting to see whether the team is able to garner the same levels of success that they saw with PUBG – or if Project Black Budget is simply a bit too behind the curve.

Striking Distance Studios is a relatively new team which was founded back in 2019 by Glen Schofield of Dead Space fame. Following the launch of their debut title ‘The Callisto Protocol’ late last year, the studio seems to have run into some issues – with its founder now having officially departed from the studio.

As reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Striking Distance Studios’ CEO and founder Glen Schofield is leaving the studio, with publisher Krafton confirming that he has “decided to pursue new opportunities.”

This is not the only major departure however, with Striking Distance's chief operating officer and chief financial officer also said to be parting ways. While no concrete details were shared regarding exactly why this shake-up has occurred, the Krafton representative claimed that these 3 departures were all voluntary – suggesting that it may not have had to do with The Callisto Protocol’s performance.

In recent years we have seen a number of industry veterans leave AAA studios in order to start up their own teams, Unfortunately, not all of them have seemed to work out with one other notable example being Jason Blundell’s departure from Deviation Games before they had even shipped a single title.

The Callisto Protocol received some criticism upon its launch in December of last year, though many still enjoyed it. With Schofield’s departure coming in the wake of a bunch of lay-offs last month, it will be interesting to see what Striking Distance Studios and Glen Schofield have planned for their respective futures.

The Callisto Protocol had a lot of hype going into it, with the spiritual successor to Dead Space set to sell a significant sum. Unfortunately, it seems as though the game’s post-launch criticisms have stifled enthusiasm, with investors cutting sales expectations by a significant 60%.

As reported by K-odyssey, Striking Distance Studios’ The Callisto Protocol has not been doing too well for publisher Krafton, with one stock report saying “The company expected cumulative sales of 5 million copies, but considering the current sales ranking, cumulative sales of 2 million copies will not be easy until this year.”

Another investment firm also reduced its sales expectations from 4 million to 2.1 million. Regardless of the metric chosen, it seems as though The Callisto Protocol has not impressed commercially.

Interestingly, we also got details on just how much the game cost to develop, with Krafton pumping just under 200 billion won into its development (roughly $162 million USD), meaning the game has quite a bit of catching up to do if it is to recuperate costs.

Of course, the game has only been out for a short while, and with DLC promised to be on its way, there is still plenty of time for The Callisto Protocol to turn things around.

In a surprise announcement during Krafton's latest earnings call, the company announced it has acquired Neon Giant, the developer behind The Ascent. That makes it the fifth acquisition in the span of two years.

Unlike most acquisitions, neither of the two companies has made any public announcements. Instead, we've learned about it through Krafton's Q3 financial report (via PCGamer), which also had some more information regarding what Neon Giant is working on.

As it seems, The studio is working on an open-world FPS, and expanding to open up another branch in Canada to work on a new project, currently known as “The Bird That Drinks Tears”. This title is based on a popular series of Korean fantasy novels created by Yeongdo Lee with the same name. A teaser trailer for this project was released in September.

Neon Giant has only released one game so far, and that's The Ascent. Overall, the game was well-received, aggregating an Opencritic score of 73 (56% recommendation) and a Steam user score of 76%. It was also a day-one title for Xbox Game Pass.

Neon Giant is Krafton's fifth acquisition since May 2021. Other recently acquired companies include 5minlab Corporation (Smash Legends, Baam Squad and Toy Clash), Unknown Worlds (Subnautica and Moonbreaker), Thingsflow (Hellobot), and Dreamotion (GunStrider: Tap Strike, Road to Valor: World War II and Ronin: The Last Samurai).

Prior to the rise of PUBG and reshuffling and rebranding as Krafton, Bluehole was primarily known for MMOs, like TERA. However, it is time for the Bluehole team to move on to new projects, so after over a decade online, Tera is officially shutting down for good.

Bluehole Studio, the team behind Tera and other MMOs at Krafton, have announced this week that Tera is shutting down, with servers set to go offline on the 30th of June.

“After much consideration, the team in South Korea have come to the conclusion that they are no longer able to offer you the exciting and satisfying content you deserve. As the last remaining publisher of TERA, it is with a heavy heart that we must respect Bluehole’s decision, and will also have to shut down the game.”

Tera first released for PCs back in 2012, before heading to consoles. The last major patch for the game arrived last year, delivering a new zone to explore, created by the original development team.

Back in December we reported that the granddaddy of the battle royale genre (at least as it pertains to video games) PUBG Battlegrounds announced that after more than 70 million copies sold, the game was going free-to-play. Now that fateful day has arrived.

From today, the 12th of January 2022,  players can head over to their respective storefronts and find the previously premium product now provided permanently pro bono.

Of course, as it is going free-to-play, new ways of monetisation have been added primarily through a new paid-for tier known as Battlegrounds Plus.

Battlegrounds Plus is a rather generous permanent upgrade to the game costing just $12.99 USD and gives access to:

  • Survival Mastery XP +100% boost
  • Career – Medal tab
  • Ranked Mode
  • Creating Custom Matches
  • Some unique cosmetic gear

Fortunately, those who already own the game will be treated to a free upgrade to Battlegrounds Plus as well as some exclusive costumes and cosmetics, namely:

  • Costume skin set
    • Battle-hardened Legacy Corset
    • Battle-hardened Legacy Jacket
    • Battle-hardened Legacy Gloves
    • Battle-hardened Legacy Pants
    • Battle-hardened Legacy Boots
  • Shackle and Shanks Legacy – Pan
  • Nameplate – Battle-hardened Legacy

All in all as it stands, PUBG Battlegrounds'  free-to-play transition is looking to be a rather fair and consumer friendly one. Hopefully it remains this way as the game embarks on its new free-to-play journey.

PUBG Mobile has now won a major lawsuit targeting a group of cheat creators caught distributing and selling cheat tools for the game. The previously prolific group of hackers will now have to pay $10 million in damages, which will be re-invested in improving anti-cheat tools for the game.

Federal Courts in the United States and Germany have ruled in favour of Tencent Games and KRAFTON, Inc. in their cases against members of a hacking group. The defendants are ordered to pay Tencent Games and KRAFTON around $10 million USD in damages, and they must cease game cheating and cheat development, as well as provide details about their cheats, how they operate and any collaborators that may have been involved.

“This legal victory bolsters our collective commitment to fiercely protect our games, PUBG IP and global community,” said Minu Lee, Head of PUBGM Product Management at KRAFTON, Inc. “Fun and fairness is the bedrock of the PUBG MOBILE experience and cheating in any form will not be tolerated. As such, we will continue enforcing our IP rights with unwavering resolve against any who seek to tarnish or misuse them.”

This lawsuit win follows on from the closure of the world's largest cheating operation in China last year. With continued legal wins, other cheat providers have begun abandoning cheats for certain games, like PUBG Mobile. Krafton is using this opportunity to continue investing in anti-cheat technology, including replay screening, isolated matchmaking for those caught cheating and improvements to the in-game report player function.

KitGuru Says: The gaming industry continues to make strides pushing back against cheats and those who sell them. The issue will never entirely go away but moves like this can lead to thousands of cheaters getting caught and banned.

PUBG: Battlegrounds is not only the catalyst that spawned the current trend of battle royale games, but in doing so landed itself as one of the best selling games of all time. After 4 years on the market, PUBG: Battlegrounds is going free-to-play.

Making the announcement, the Product Marketing Manager at Krafton – John Yang – said “Throughout the years, PUBG: Battlegrounds has seen so many changes. We’re proud of all the improvements our little game has seen over the years, but now it’s time for the game to make its biggest leap of all: free to play.”

Explaining this decision, Yang claimed that “Battlegrounds free-to-play now gives us the opportunity to expand our community even more and bring all the thrills of PUBG and battle royale to everyone, while providing new friends, and let’s be honest, more targets for our existing player base.”

Described as “our natural next step,” the shift to free-to-play will also be aligned with “several improvements we’ve been working on, with some of those focused on our new players.”

Those who purchased the game will not be forgotten however. A ‘Special Commemorative Pack’ is being gifted to all those with a purchased copy of PUBG and includes “seven cosmetic items and access to Battlegrounds Plus, which unlocks all of the game’s features while providing some account boosts.”

PUBG: Battlegrounds free-to-play launches on the 12th of January 2022. The original game is one of the best-selling games of all time, having moved 70 million units since launch. While a huge achievement, it does not compare to many F2P offerings – many of which have seen in excess of 300 million players.

With 70 million people willing to pay for PUBG, it will be interesting to see just how many will be willing to download it for free.

Unknown Worlds has made a name for itself in recent years with Subnautica, one of the best survival games around. After years of being independent, the studio is now being acquired, joining Krafton Inc, the parent company behind PUBG.

Krafton, known for PUBG: Battlegrounds, The Callisto Protocol and a few other upcoming projects, has now acquired Unknown Worlds. Now under Krafton, Unknown Worlds is the company's sixth game development studio, joining the likes of PUBG Studios, Striking Distance Studios, Bluehole Studio, RisingWings and Dreamotion.

Speaking on the acquisition, CH Kim, CEO of Krafton, said: “Unknown Worlds are incredibly skilled and passionate developers with an unparalleled gift for creativity and a proven track record of building successful player-driven worlds. KRAFTON will spare no effort in helping them. Not only do they enhance our development capabilities, but we share a goal of creating unique experiences for global audiences.”

Charlie Cleveland, CEO of Unknown Worlds added: “Subnautica and PUBG both started humbly and evolved successfully through constant iteration and feedback. We want to bring new games to the world stage – and with KRAFTON, we’re a big step closer. We’re truly looking forward to our future together.”

Unknown Worlds will continue to operate independently of Krafton, but with new resources to fund and publish future projects. The studio is now working on a “genre-defining game”, slated to launch into Early Access in 2022.

Greene initially helped start up the PUBG studio with the help of parent company Krafton, before leaving the battle-royale hit to form a second studio known as PUBG Special Projects. Now, Greene will be forming his own independent studio.

After forming the PUBG Special Projects studio in Amsterdam, Greene began working on a mysterious game currently known as ‘Prologue', which seemed to be a horror title set in the PUBG universe. That game isn't finished just yet, and it is currently unknown if development will continue.

Greene's new studio is called PlayerUnknown Productions and it is also based in Amsterdam, Krafton has also acquired a minority stake in the studio to help get things started up. Based on Greene's statement, it is possible that Prologue will continue development under PlayerUnknown Productions:

“I'm so very grateful to everyone at PUBG and Krafton for taking a chance on me and for the opportunities they afforded me over the past four years. Today, I'm excited to take the next step on my journey to create the kind of experience I've envisaged for years. Again, I'm thankful for everyone at Krafton for supporting my plans, and I'll have more to reveal more about our project at a later date.”

Aside from Prologue, there is another PUBG spin-off title in the works under Dead Space creator, Glen Schofield, as well as a new mobile PUBG game called PUBG: New State.

Despite the fervour surrounding PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds simmering down compared to its peak, the studio behind the popular battle royale shooter still has many plans for the IP. As the game’s holding company plans to become publicly traded, it was announced that a new game set in the PUBG universe is planned to release some time next year.

In a report by Bloomberg which discusses the plans by Krafton to launch an IPO which is estimated to be worth $27.2 Billion, it is revealed that the company is planning to release a “PUBG-related PC and console game by next year.”

Though little is known about this title, Bloomberg clarified that this game is separate to The Callisto Protocol, which is also set to launch in 2022. Prior to either of these titles however, the studio will be releasing a new battle royale title on mobile which is said to be based on PUBG. It will be interesting to see how this differs from PUBG Mobile, which continues to be a major success for the company.

Krafton Inc. is a South Korean video game holding company which is responsible for 8 different subsidiaries, including PUBG Studio, Bluehole and Striking Distance. PUBG Studio is of course responsible for the mainline PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Striking Distance meanwhile is the newly formed studio which is set to develop The Callisto Protocol. It’ll be interesting to see what this mysterious and unannounced game is about.
