Vulkan 1.3 is the latest major version of the compute and graphics API. As such, it has been receiving support for all the graphics cards launched between its release and now. Currently, it supports all graphics cards on the market from AMD, Nvidia and Intel, but it's also ready for upcoming GPUs too, including AMD's upcoming RDNA 3 graphics cards.

As spotted by VideoCardz, the Khronos group added RDNA 3 GPUs to the list on October 13th. Although it's not mentioned, we assume this refers to the upcoming Radeon RX 7000 series cards that AMD will announce in November.

Based on the Vulkan 1.3 conformant product list, RDNA 3 GPUs only support the API if installed on Ubuntu- or Windows 10-based systems. As of now, there's no mention of supporting Windows 11, but it shouldn't take long for that to be straightened out.

AMD scheduled an event for November 3rd to announce its next generation of RDNA-based graphics cards. As per the latest rumours, the company will announce the Navi 31-powered Radeon RX 7900 XTX (flagship) and RX 7900 XT cards.

KitGuru says: During the event, AMD should mention what other APIs the graphics cards will support. Considering the Radeon RX 6000 series supports DX12 Ultimate, this is another API that the new generation of AMD GPUs will certainly be capable of handling.

Earlier this month, we learned that Marcus Hutchins had been arrested by the FBI and charged with creating and selling malware known as Kronos. This was quite the shock as Hutchins had helped stop the WannaCry virus just a few months earlier. At the time, people who know Hutchins spoke out in his defence and now, he has pleaded Not Guilty to the FBI’s charges.

The British security expert had already been granted $30,000 bail. Under his agreement with the prosecutor, he will be able to travel to Los Angeles to continue working as a security researcher for the time being. He will be tracked via GPS though and obviously can’t leave the US.

As Motherboard reports, Hutchins appeared in front of a “packed courtroom” in Wisconsin earlier today. He pleaded not guilty to all six charges against him, which relate to the creation and sale of Kronos, a specific banking malware. According to some reports, during an FBI interview Hutchins apparently admitted to writing some of the code that then went on to become Kronos. This was before he obtained legal representation.

Now, Hutchins is being represented by Marcia Hofman, who previously worked for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Hofman told reporters that Hutchins will “vigorously defend himself” against the charges brought against him, adding that they are confident that he will be vindicated once evidence comes to light.

For the time being, we don’t have a date for the trial.

KitGuru Says: Hutchins’ bail terms ended up being more favourable than initially believed, which indicates that the prosecution don’t necessarily see him as a threat to security. It will certainly be interesting to keep following this case as it develops.

At the end of last week, we learned that the 23 year old security researcher responsible for halting WannaCry had been arrested by the FBI, with the feds claiming that he wrote and sold a piece of banking malware on the dark web. Since then, some new details surrounding the case have come to light. Firstly, Hutchins can get out on bail with a $30,000 bond but beyond that he plans on pleading not guilty to the charges presented.

Once news of the arrest hit the web, a good chunk of the cyber security community rallied around Hutchins, believing him to be an ethical hacker, rather than the sort of person to create, distribute and sell malware on the dark web. During the first hearing, the federal prosecution tried to paint Hutchins as a danger to society in an effort to convince the judge to deny him bail but the defence successfully argued that this was not the case. At this time, Andrew Mabbit, one of the people publicly defending Hutchins, has managed to secure him proper legal representation with the hope that some crowd funding will help cover the bill.

Andrew Mabbit and Hutchins’ lawyer are expecting to bail him out at some point today. From there, he is expected to please not guilty to six cybercrime charges, including the creation, advertising and selling of malware.

Right now there is some conflicting information surrounding whether or not Hutchins admitted to writing the code for Kronos, the piece of malware he is being accused of selling. According to a report from the Telegraph, he did admit to creating the code during a police interview. The report also states that Hutchins was arrested as part of a sting operation, during which undercover officers claim to have paid Hutchins and an unnamed co-defendant for the code. The prosecution also has evidence of chat logs between the two defendants.

KitGuru Says: There’s a lot of new information coming out about this case now but it is unlikely we will hear all of the major details until arguments from both sides are presented in court. We will keep following this story for updates.

Back when the WannaCry malware attack hit several months ago and began causing panic, one young British security researcher, Marcus Hutchins, made headlines after discovering a way to stop the ransomware in its tracks. At the time, he was applauded for his efforts but in a surprise twist, the FBI has arrested him, accusing him of helping to create ‘Kronos’ a trojan that affected banks.

Hutchins works at Kryptos Logic and is perhaps best known by his Twitter name @MalwareTechBlog. He was arrested by the FBI just as he was about to board a plane leaving the US, following Def Con in Las Vegas. The US Department of Justice confirmed that the charges he’s been arrested for relate to “alleged conduct that occurred between or in July 2014 and July 2015”.

Back in July 2014, Hutchins did tweet out asking for a Kronos trojan sample. It seems this could be part of the evidence the FBI gathered. He is also being accused of helping to update Kronos in February 2015, around six months after it first went up for sale on the dark web. Beyond that, the investigators also reckon that Hutchins helped sell the malware on marketplaces like AlphaBay, which was shut down earlier this year.

Fellow security experts on Twitter have expressed their surprise and disbelief at the charges levied at Hutchins. Fidus Information Security founder, Andrew Mabbit, has been working to secure legal representation for him, meanwhile Kevin Beaumont has been tweeting out in his defence, believing the allegations to be a mistake.

As usual, an indictment does not make someone guilty, nor does it contain any evidence. Still, we don’t know exactly what evidence the FBI has on its side to warrant this arrest.

KitGuru Says: This is a surprising turn of events to say the least. Hopefully we will hear more details surrounding this investigation soon.
