Riot has been working on its own fighting game, featuring characters from League of Legends, for years now under the working title ‘Project L'. Now, the game finally has an official name, platform confirmation and a release window.

Project L, Riot's League of Legends-based fighting game, now has an official name – 2XKO. We aren't quite sure how you are supposed to pronounce that, but it is the name they're going with.

The announcement is accompanied by a new development update video, which we've had a few of over the years since this project was first announced. The game is planned to launch in 2025 for PC, as well as Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles.

In order to gather feedback from fighting game enthusiasts, Riot will be attending a number of events this year armed with a demo for the game, which will first be playable at EVO Japan in April, before landing at other events throughout the year. It is unclear if a downloadable version of the demo will be made available this year for those who aren't attending any big gaming events, so we'll have to wait and see. We'll no doubt see plenty of impressions and discussions about the game once players finally get some hands-on time with it.

Netflix and Riot impressed us all with the debut of Arcane's first season. The animated series, based on the League of Legends IP, had a critically acclaimed run and now, we have our first look at the long awaited second season.

The first teaser trailer for Arcane Season 2 has now dropped, giving us just a small hint at what's to come with the return of a villain from the first season.

Arcane's first season was praised for its both its animation and writing, with each episode ending up being widely discussed online during the run. It also helps that the show did not require any previous League of Legends knowledge to jump into, so even those who have never really played the game, like myself, could enjoy it from start to finish.

The first season debuted in November 2021, so it has been a pretty long wait for its return. Season 2 will debut on Netflix in November this year, so we've still got a ways to go, but we should get more information and trailers closer to release.

The League of Legends Worlds 2023 finals broke the record for esports event viewership with over 6.4 million concurrent viewers, without accounting for Chinese viewers. This is a significant accomplishment for one of the most prestigious esports games.

During Worlds 2023, the Korean T1 team showcased their skills and won their fourth title against the Chinese Weibo Gaming team. According to Esports Charts, the finals were broadcast worldwide, registering a peak of 6,402,760 concurrent viewers distributed across the various streams showing the matches. This is an impressive number for a 14-year-old game.

LoL Worlds 2023 instantly smashed the record for esports viewership. With over a decade of League of Legends esports history, the game has built up an impressive legacy. Faker, the leader of T1 and undisputed all-time greatest in the game, has been around since the beginning, making both new and old fans tune in to watch if he could secure his fourth title.

Esports Charts data shows Worlds 2023 broke attendance records in its first game. As the tournament progressed, the number of spectators watching increased, leading to the record. The Worlds 2023 Final was watched by at least 2 million more people than the T1 vs JDG semifinal, which had slightly over 4 million views. All these figures exclude China, where League of Legends is immensely popular.

LG launched a limited-edition UltraGear OLED gaming monitor for LoL fans. The monitor boasts a unique League of Legends theme applied to its exterior and on-screen menus, built with crucial input from League of Legends players. In addition to a brilliant 27-inch OLED display with a fast 240Hz refresh rate, this 27GR95QL monitor is filled with gamer-centric features, as one would expect from an UltraGear device.

The limited-edition League of Legends UltraGear 27GR95QL OLED gaming monitor is the result of LG's cooperation with Riot Games. The popular MOBA introduced in 2009 has the largest gaming audience in all of esports. Approximately 600 million people have played League of Legends, and the game has an average of 180 million players every month.

The 27GR95QL is suited to play League of Legends competitively, with a 27-inch screen, a 240Hz refresh rate, and a response time of 0.03 ms (GTG). The QHD OLED display also supports HDR10 and covers 98.5% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut. LG's limited-edition UltraGear OLED gaming display takes on League of Legends' Hextech-themed design, merging iconography and visuals from the game into its menu panels and appearance. The rear of the monitor and the front of its stand have been decorated with game-related emblems and patterns. Moreover, the OSD menus include the game's logo, as well as typefaces and borders based on the League of Legends theme.

The LG UltraGear League of Legends limited-edition model is only available in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea, and is sold via LG's website directly. Customers who pre-order the 27GR95QL will get three League of Legends skin codes.

Over the last few years, Riot Games has been working on its very first fighting game under the codename Project L. We last saw gameplay in 2021 and now, Riot is ready to show off a bit more.

Project L was initially announced alongside Valorant a couple of years ago as part of Riot's efforts to expand its player base and grow the League of Legends IP. Project L will be a 2D fighter, taking inspiration from the likes of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, and unlike Valorant, this game will be set in the LoL universe, using characters from the original MOBA.

In the video above, you can see new gameplay from Project L, released as part of the latest developer diary update. This time around, we get to see a full duos match play out. Stylistically, it looks like the team has gotten things on point. The character models and animations all look good and overall, the game does look pretty polished.

Each fighter on the roster has their own unique move set but the exact number of characters that will appear in the game at launch has yet to be announced. In fact, we don't have a release date yet either.

KitGuru Says: Riot has been working on Project L for a long time now. We've finally got a full match worth of gameplay and hopefully at some point in the next 12 months we can get some release date news.

First revealed back in 2019, Project L is an upcoming free-to-play tag team fighting game set in the world of Runeterra and is being published by Riot Games. So far, the game has only been confirmed to be releasing for the PC platform – in alignment with Riot’s other releases such as League of Legends. That said, as part of a recent banquet held in Japan, it was seemingly revealed that the much-anticipated title will also be coming to consoles.

Taking to Twitter, GamerBeeTW was one of many who were invited to attend a banquet in Japan dedicated to Project L, in which Riot showcased new gameplay and hosted a Q&A session. As shared by GamerBeeTW in a post translated by ChatGPT, a number of interesting tidbits were revealed, with Riot claiming that the upcoming Project L is “still far from the close beta stage, let alone release.”

Though unsurprising, it was also confirmed that the title will operate under the live-service moniker, meaning it will receive continuous updates following its official launch with no plans for a sequel.

Perhaps the most interesting revelation was the fact that the game is also set to come to consoles, with GamerBeeTW claiming that Riot “are working hard to coordinate with PlayStation and hope to create a fighting game with the same input lag across all platforms” – the first official confirmation of its multi-platform status.

One respondee asked for clarification on that final point, saying “are they confirming it’ll be on consoles and not PC only?” to which GamerBeeTW responded by stating that “They want more people can (sic) play it, so they are considering release on consoles.”

Though perhaps unsurprising, it is welcome to see that when it does finally come out, Project L will most likely be coming to consoles. Of course, a lot can happen between now and the game’s eventual launch, and so we will have to wait and see – but still, the news is exciting nonetheless.

KitGuru says: What do you think of Project L so far? When do you think it will release? Do you think the game will come to consoles? Let us know down below.

The League of Legends Worlds finals was as dramatic as it can get, with two Korean teams fighting to lift the most prestigious trophy in the competitive scene. In the end, the underdog team, DRX, emerged as champions after a 3:2 victory over T1, with a record-high peak of 5.1 million concurrent viewers watching the matches unfold.

Interestingly, this was the first Worlds finals where select community members were allowed to restream matches with their own commentary, which attracted more fans to the event than in previous years. According to ESCharts, the finals achieved a peak concurrent viewership of 5,147,699 viewers, setting a new record for the event. This figure doesn't include Chinese streaming service numbers due to their unreliability.

The opening ceremony alone, which included a live performance from Lil Nas X and a guest appearance from MrBeast, attracted over 3.2 million concurrent viewers. That was more than any other match of the event, except for the finals. Part of the reason behind the record number of viewers is probably related to the community casters chosen by Riot Games. The publisher chose Sykkuno and Ibai ibai Llanos, two well-known Twitch streamers in the LoL community.

It was during the second match that the 5.1 million concurrent viewers figure was achieved. That was 2.3x more than the second most popular game of the tournament, the semi-final between JD Gaming and T1. Ibai's stream alone was responsible for 481K concurrent viewers.

Despite the massive success of this year's Worlds championship tournament, the 2021 Free Fire World Series is still the tournament with the highest peak of concurrent viewers, with a mind-blowing 5.4 million.

Riot Games has just made its latest studio acquisition – but not the kind you might be expecting. Rather than going out and picking up a new studio and IPs, Riot has simply bought out Wargaming's Sydney-based studio. That office will now become part of the Riot family and aid in the ongoing development of Riot's games.

Wargaming Sydney was previously known as BigWorld Technology and worked on various MMOs and online games over the 2000s. As PCGamer points out, the studio was acquired by Wargaming in 2012, and from that point, it has primarily worked on games like World of Tanks, Warships and Warplanes. Now after this acquisition, the company will now be known as Riot Sydney and will be working to support the development and online services for League of Legends and Valorant, as well as Riot's company-wide technical team.

Speaking on the acquisition, Riot Games President, Marc Merrill, said that the company is “excited” to bring on a new group of talented developers. This particular studio is one of the largest in Australia, and many of those responsible for building various tools are still working there. With that in mind, the talent present at the studio seems to be the main thing Riot was interested in getting.

Riot Sydney will be headed up by Naresh Hirani, who previously worked as a Game Director at Sony, and then rose up the ranks to Head of Development at Wargaming Sydney. All employees will be retained post-transaction, which is always nice to see, particularly in an industry where developer turnover is very common.

Back in 2019, Riot set out on a journey to expand its fanbase well beyond League of Legends. Since then, Riot has launched Legends of Runeterra, Valorant, TFT and Wild Rift, but the company has yet to launch its fighting game, known as Project L. It looks like that will be changing soon.

In an update this week, Project L director, Tom Cannon, touched on what the team has been up to in recent months. Last year, the team landed on Project L being a team-based fighter with assist mechanics. Now, the team has landed on teams of two, so you'll have two fighters per match, and you can use your secondary fighter to perform assist moves to aid the battle.

At this point, the team has mostly finished putting the core mechanics in place, and many have now moved on to other tasks, like creating new characters and designing social features. Riot has also now confirmed that Project L will be a free-to-play game, which isn't surprising, as Riot has always had great success with the F2P model. Cannon does promise that the team will remain respectful of players' time and wallets though.

Based on the video, it sounds like Project L is close to the finish line, so in 2023, we would expect to see Riot gearing up for a launch, with the first public playtests, a final name for the game, character roster reveals and a release date.

League of Legends was at the forefront of free-to-play gaming over a decade ago, offering in-game currency and microtransactions before it became the widespread norm. In-game currency prices have been fixed in place for a while, but Riot has recently announced a price hike of 10% on average.

Buying in-game currency to spend in League of Legends or Team Fight Tactics is getting more expensive, In Europe, the average price has risen by 9.8 percent, and here in the UK, the average price has risen by 10.9 percent.

You can see the new UK pricing in the table below:

Old Price (GBP) Old Total Currency New Price (GBP) New Total Currency
5.00 730 4.49 575
10.00 1520 10.99 1450
15.00 2330 20.99 2850
20.00 3080 34.99 5000
35.00 5480 49.99 7250
50.00 7920 99.99 15000

And here's the comparison table for Europe:

Old Price (EUR) Old Total Currency New Price (EUR) New Total Currency
2.50 310 4.99 575
5.00 650 10.99 1380
10.00 1380 21.99 2800
20.00 2800 34.99 4500
35.00 5000 49.99 6500
50.00 7200 99.99 13500

These new prices will go into effect on the 19th of August, so if you plan on making any in-game purchases in LoL or TFT, then you have time to stock up before prices go up.

According to Riot, these changes are being made due to currency fluctuations and worldwide inflation.

Today during the Xbox and Bethesda showcase, Microsoft announced a new partnership with Riot Games. Moving forward, all of Riot's titles will be available on Xbox Game Pass, giving subscribers premium access to games like League of Legends, Valorant and more.

On PC, League of Legends will be available on Xbox Game Pass with all champions unlocked. On mobile, Game Pass subscribers can play the excellent League of Legends spin-off, Wild Rift, with all champions unlocked.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers will unlock the Foundations card set in Legends of Runeterra on PC and Mobile, and you'll get some selected ‘Little Legends' unlocked in Teamfight Tactics. Finally, Game Pass subscribers can play Valorant on PC with all Agents unlocked.

We know Riot also has future plans to bring certain games to console, so perhaps when those titles eventually make their way over to Xbox, they'll end up being available on Game Pass for Console too.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This partnership was quite the surprise, and as a Valorant and Wild Rift player, I'll be looking forward to taking advantage of the benefits. What did you all think of Riot's new partnership with Microsoft?

Following on from a recent collaboration for League of Legends-themed peripherals, Riot is continuing to partner with PC hardware companies. This time around, AOC has teamed up with Riot to produce a LoL themed gaming monitor.

The AOC AG275QXL packs a 27-inch IPS panel with 170Hz refresh rate, 2560×1440 resolution, and 1ms G2G response time. The panel has a 10-bit colour depth, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and a typical brightness of 350cd/m² in SDR, raising to 400cd/m² in HDR mode. These specifications allowed the monitor to receive VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification.

The AG275QXL's panel can cover 98% of the sRGB spectrum and 94% of the DCI-P3 gamut. In addition, the monitor is G-Sync compatible and comes factory calibrated, ensuring ΔE<2. To move through the OSD menu, you can use the included LoL-themed controller.

The back of the monitor and the included stand have RGB lighting that can be synchronised with LoL in-game actions thanks to Light FX Sync technology. In addition, the monitor uses LoL sound effects on start-up and shutdown.

Available ports include 2x HDMI 2.0 ports, 2x DisplayPorts 1.4, 4x USB 3.2 Gen1, a 3.5mm audio-out jack, and three 3.5mm jacks: an audio-out, a mic-out, and a mic-in. VESA mounting arms are also supported (100x100mm), but the included stand already gives you decent ergonomic options, allowing users to tilt, pivot, swivel, and adjust the height. There's also a pair of built-in 5W speakers.

For now, this monitor is only available in China, but considering the immense popularity of League of Legends across the world, it may become available in other regions.

KitGuru says: Are you a League of Legends fan? Would you consider getting the AG275QXL for your setup?

Fortnite collaborations – a once surprising welcome – is now a seemingly weekly occurrence with dozens of collaborations and an endless pool of pop culture characters to play as. The next two collaborations have now leaked.

Vi, one of the starring characters in Netflix’s hit show Arcane: League of Legends, will be coming to Fortnite according to leaker HYPEX. This represents the second character from the show/franchise, as Jinx – the other main lead – was added back in November just prior to the show’s release.

The other character which has leaked is the Green Goblin from Spider-Man. As revealed by GMatrixGames, this version of the Green Goblin will not be styled after his appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but will instead take notes from his classic comic book look. Alongside the outfit, players will be able to obtain the Goblin Glider, a ‘Pumpkin Pickaxe' as a harvesting tool, a ‘Pumpkin Bomb' back bling, and an “Arm the Pumpkin!” emote.

While it appears as though the glider will only be used for dropping from the Battle Bus, it would be exciting if this were to eventually lead to a Spider-Man vs Green Goblin game mode – especially as Fortnite currently has web swinging in the game. Either way, we can expect these two characters to be officially announced soon.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the skins? Will you buy either of them? How relevant is Fortnite in your mind? Let us know down below.

Over the last few years, Riot Games has been expanding beyond League of Legends and into new genres, from card games to competitive shooters. Soon, Riot will be adding a fighting game to that list, known as Project L.

In the video above, you can see the first gameplay footage of the game in action, released as part of Riot's celebration of Arcane, a Netflix animated series based on League of Legends, which just aired its final episode.

We can already see a handful of popular League characters in the game and it appears each fighter will have their own unique move set. This will be a team-based fighting game, so players will each pick two champions before battling it out. While core gameplay has been established with Project L, and the game is up and running internally at Riot, there is still more work to be done and with that in mind, there is no set release date yet.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Riot has been working on Project L for a long time now, so it's nice to finally see the game in action. So far, Riot's other spin-offs have been successful, so it will be interesting to see if the studio can also get the backing of the fighting game community when this releases.

Despite being one of the biggest publishers around, Riot Games has a surprisingly small list of published games. Even so, the League of Legends creator has announced that its games set in that universe now see over 180 million monthly active users.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Riot Games said “Thank you to our global community for helping Runeterra reach new heights! 180 million players in October and still growing!”

While the message caused some slight confusion as to which Riot titles this included, 180 million monthly active users (MAU) is a massive figure – especially considering the fact that the entirety of Steam only has 120 million MAU (as of 2020).

Adding clarity, Riot Games told PC Gamer that this statistic pertains to games set in the League of Legends universe, meaning: League of Legends, League of Legends: Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics and Fight for the Golden Spatula.

Even with so many spin-offs there’s no denying that the core League of Legends game is continuing to be strong, indicating that despite releasing over 10 years ago, the game still has at least another 10 years within it.

League of Legends and Fortnite are undoubtedly two of the biggest properties currently in video games. Despite this, the two games have never really crossed paths…until now. In celebration of the launch of the upcoming League of Legends Netflix show ‘Arcane’, a character from LOL will be dropping into Fortnite.

Netflix finally released its official trailer for its ‘Arcane’ TV show which is set in the world of League of Legends – the the synopsis of which reads as follows: “Set in the utopian region of Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions-and the power that will tear them apart.”

Arcane will be releasing on the 6th of November, and in celebration of this, it has been reported by Fortnite leaker ‘ShiinaBR’ that one of League’s most popular characters – Jinx – will be dropping into Fortnite.

While no date was given, it is safe to assume that the announcement will drop alongside the show’s release on the 6th of November – meaning very soon. Despite first releasing all the way back in 2009, League of Legends continues to be one of the biggest games around, with the game seeing 115 million monthly players in 2020.

Fortnite is a much newer game, however catapulted to success in just a few short years, with the game having over 350 million registered users currently. Fortnite has crossed over with many huge intellectual properties, but even so, this latest crossover is undoubtedly a big deal.

Riot Games has been branching out into different genres recently and has placed a focus on expanding the League of Legends IP with new games and spin-offs. In late 2020, the studio revealed that it was indeed in the early stages of a League of Legends MMO, now, Riot is officially hiring for the project, which is currently known as ‘World of Runeterra'.

Initial confirmation of the game came last year, when Riot VP of IP and Entertainment confirmed that one of the company's unannounced projects was indeed an MMO.

Now, Riot is recruiting to get development rolling. The recruitment website refers to the game as ‘World of Runeterra‘, although this is likely not the final name for the game – that information will be announced at a much later date.

Currently, Riot is looking for UX designers, artists, those with experience in game production and of course, MMO specialists. More jobs will open up as the project moves forward, with Riot saying: “We know MMOs take a lot of people to create, and we’ll need a pretty big raid team if we want to bring Runeterra to life. That's where you come in. We’ll periodically post new roles, but right now we don’t have any specific openings on the team—we’re just gearing up for the journey (and need to replace our greens first).”

There is no indication as to when this MMO will release. The project is currently in early development, so we're unlikely to see it in action for at least a few years.

KitGuru Says: Riot has found success expanding League of Legends into other games over the last few years, but we'll have to wait and see if the company can really shake up the MMO landscape. Do you think a League of Legends based MMO will be successful?

KIOXIA is getting into the esports sponsorship ring, with Misfits Gaming's League of Legends team being the first to represent the brand at tournaments. The sponsorship deal will see the League of Legends squad running KIOXIA EXCERIA SSDs in their gaming rigs.

Misfits Gaming Group was founded in 2016 and currently has two active teams, one for professional-level League of Legends and another for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Previously, Misfits has also been involved in CS:GO and Overwatch esports.

KIOXIA's EXCERIA SSD series comes in two forms, a SATA option at standard SATA SSD speeds, and an M.2 option with faster 1700/1600 MB/s sequential read and write speeds and BiCS Flash. Speaking about the deal with Misfits, Jamie Stitt, KIOXIA Europe GmbH General Manager of B2C Sales & Marketing said:

“Solid state drives are a fundamental component of a high-performing gaming system and KIOXIA looks forward to supporting the teams with the hardware they need to perform in the form of our EXCERIA SSD range.”

On Misfits' end, the group's VP of partnerships, Vas Roberts, said: “KIOXIA is world-renowned for their excellence in storage and memory solutions, and we’re thrilled to welcome such a prestigious partner to our team. Their new range of high-speed EXCERIA SSDs will power the League of Legends teams in Berlin and ensure our players get the best performance out of their PCs”.

Riot Games has been branching out into different genres recently and has placed a focus on expanding the League of Legends IP with new games and spin-offs. While not officially announced, it would seem that one of these spin-offs will indeed be a League of Legends MMORPG.

Greg Street, Riot's Vice President of IP and Entertainment, confirmed that an MMO was in the works on Twitter, seemingly not anticipating it to be big news:

Riot Games is not ready to talk about the project in detail. After the tweet, the company's official PR said that it has nothing further to say on the matter at this time.

Seemingly, the project is just getting started and as we know, MMOs are a huge undertaking, so it could be years before we see it in action.

In December 2019, Riot Games announced that it was teaming up with other developers to create a series of single-player games based on the League of Legends IP. The first of these games is Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, which was initially penned in for an early 2021 launch, but that has now changed to simply ‘2021'. While the delay is unfortunate, we weren't left empty handed, as the first gameplay trailer has released.

Last night during The Game Awards, Riot Games released the first gameplay trailer for Ruined King, showing off the indie-RPG in action:

Ruined King is set within two regions of Runeterra – Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles. Players will go on a journey, investigating the black mist and fighting against a common enemy.

Gameplay-wise, it is a turn-based RPG with isometric maps and dungeons. Along the way, you'll meet League of Legends characters like Miss Fortune, Illaoi, Braum, Yasuo, Ahri, and Pyke.

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story will be coming to PC and consoles in 2021.

League of Legends: Wild Rift is finally heading to new territories. Riot's mobile and console focused take on League of Legends is entering Open Beta in Europe next month.

Wild Rift was announced just over a year ago as a “redesigned 5v5 League of Legends MOBA” for consoles and mobile devices. In this version, matches are faster to complete and there is a new control system in place to make it friendly for touchscreens and gamepads.

League of Legends: Wild Rift will enter open beta in different regions on different dates. On the 7th of December, those in Oceania, Taiwan and Vietnam will get access, then on the 10th of December, the beta expands to Europe, the Middle East & North Africa, Russia & CIS, and Turkey.

All players in those locations will have full access to the game on Android and iOS. Currently, Wild Rift is already in regional open beta in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia. In 2021, the game will also be made available in the Americas.

KitGuru Says: I'm looking forward to giving Wild Rift a try, particularly after enjoying some of Riot's other recent games like Runeterra and Valorant. Will any of you be giving this a go when the open beta arrives?

The first single-player League of Legends game is now almost ready for prime time, with a release date set for early 2021.

Today, Riot Forge announced that Ruined King: A League of Legends story will be coming to PC and consoles early next year. The list of consoles includes the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, followed by a free next-gen upgrade to Xbox Series X/S and PS5 later in the year.

Ruined King is developed by Airship Syndicate, who previously worked on Darksiders Genesis. Players can expect a turn-based RPG set in the League of Legends universe.

The story takes place in two regions of Runeterra. The first is Bilgewater, a port town home to dock gangs, smugglers and sea creature hunters. The story will eventually send players to the Shadow Isles, a cursed land with a deadly black mist that corrupts those it comes in contact with. As you would expect, several League of Legends champions will be joining you on this journey, including Miss Fortunte, Illaoi, Braum, Yasuo, Ahri, and Pyke.

KitGuru Says: League of Legends has always had interesting lore but seeing single-player games really flesh it all out should be very interesting. Will any of you be checking this out in 2021?

In the coming months, Riot Games will make several changes to League of Legends' client. These changes are aimed at improving the user's experience by fixing bugs, improving the client's performance, and reducing the “client bootstrap time” and the “champ select lock-in time”.

According to LoL development team, “the client is not in great shape”. Some problems the team listed include bugs, lag, memory leaks, crashes, freezes, and more. The client had already receive an update previously, but the “problems remain”. Given that the previous approach didn't work, the developer shared “specific performance targets and clear details” of its plans over the next six months.

In a previous client update, Riot added tools to track “basic performance indicators”, such as the time to boot (bootstrap time). The team aimed at 15 seconds to boot, but there are still cases that “can take up to three or even four times” that time. Another tracked indicator is the “champ select lock-in time”, which is the time it takes for the “client to register” the player input to lock a champion. The chart below results of the average “champ select lock-in time” in both patch 9.22, and patch 10.2.

The improvement observed from patch 9.22 to patch 10.2, comes from the update to the chromium engine made in patch 9.23, yet these results are still not at the level the team wants. When looking at the 70th and 90th percentile, there's still a considerable amount of players with a delay of half a second when locking a champion.

To improve these results, the development team has two objectives: lower the bootstrap time to 15 seconds and the champ select lock-in time to 100ms, “even for 90th percentile players”. Bugs, crashes and memory leaks will be fixed while they reduce the bootstrap time and champ select lock-in time.

Riot's plan to reach these objectives is divided in two phases. First, they will be addressing the bootstrap issues. Second, “near the end of spring”, the team will focus on fixing the “champion select” existing problems. The team will be creating dev blogs to share its progress, “which will include hard numbers on performance” and any changes made to the project's schedule.

Riot Games has announced a lot of new titles recently, rapidly expanding beyond its core game, League of Legends. Some of the titles announced could be considered risky but there was no Artifact or Diablo Immortal level backlash to speak of. It turns out that a lot of thought went into avoiding that reaction and Riot's communications lead has spilled the beans on some of the tactics used.

Yesterday, Ryan Rigney, League of Legends' Communications Lead, posted a Twitter thread going over five ways to announce a risky/controversial game successfully. The first of these announced games was Teamfight Tactics, which was inspired by Dota Auto Chess. Instead of pretending that Dota Auto Chess didn't exist, Riot specifically listed it as the game that inspired developers to create something similar. Players ended up appreciating that Riot didn't try to dance around accusations of copying and instead addressed the elephant in the room.

Riot has also announced two mobile games in 2019, which would be considered risky after the reception to Blizzard's Diablo Immortal. With the announcement of Wild Rift and Teamfight Tactics mobile, Riot leaned into the ‘don't you guys have phones' meme but also made a point of showing off how much work went into the game. Wild Rift in particular was announced with a montage of really nice animations introducing each character, so it was clear that the developers put time and effort into crafting the game.

Finally, Runeterra was the last ‘risky' game announcement from Riot last year. It is a card game but instead of announcing it just on its own, Riot bundled a teaser of it in with a montage of three other game announcements. Each game shown in the montage may not appeal to all Riot fans but there is a high chance that at least one of those games will appeal to a good percentage.

With that in mind, rather than having a large audience of excited fans sighing at the idea of a card game, the conversation shifted towards ‘look at all the cool stuff Riot is doing'. Of course, pulling something like that off does take a lot of coordination and planning internally. It seems unlikely that a studio like Valve could have announced Dota Underlords, Half-Life: Alyx and Artifact at the same time. However, a publisher like Blizzard could pull something like this off, particularly when you have the benefit of a yearly convention that announcements are planned around.

The full Twitter thread is worth reading, particularly if you are interested in how some studios plan new game announcements and how to show off new content for the first time.

KitGuru Says: I think the key trick here is to announce mobile games alongside something that the core audience can be excited about. If Diablo Immortal was announced alongside Diablo 4, the conversation would have been very different. Riot has shown this strategy in action already, announcing a shooter, a card game, a fighting game, an autobattler and a mobile game all in quick succession without causing any mass controversy.

The very first project under this new initiative has now been announced, titled ‘Ruined King: A League of Legends Story'.

The naming scheme here will take some inspiration from the spin-off Star Wars movies, adding ‘A League of Legends Story' to the title. You can see the trailer for ‘Ruined King' below:

Airship Syndicate, the studio behind Darksiders Genesis, is developing Ruined King, which will see players take on the roles of several champions in a turn-based RPG format. The story is set after Burning Tides and will feature locations like Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles.

We don't know much more about the game beyond that just yet but the studio has teased that the game will shake-up the traditional turn-based formula somehow.

KitGuru Says: This is the sort of direction that I've thought many popular multiplayer games should go, especially the ones that put additional time into crafting lore and creating interesting characters. It has taken a long time for us to get to this point but if League of Legends' first attempts prove successful, then we could see more developers expand their competitive esports games into the single-player realm.

League of Legends has been around for a decade now and during that time, plenty of interesting character lore has been written but due to the competitive MOBA format, those stories haven't been fully explored. That is starting to change, with Riot today announcing a new publishing group working with third-party developers to create brand new games that expand on the League of Legends universe.

Riot Forge will publish new games and experiences from third-party developers who want to “engage with the League of Legends Universe in different genres on various platforms”. These games won't replace the ‘live service' titles developed internally at Riot and will instead be positioned to complement them and get more players invested in the IP.

“We are always looking for new ways to bring the World of Runeterra and its champions to new and existing audiences around the world,” said Greg Street, VP of IP and Entertainment at Riot Games. “There are so many talented game studios around the world that have exceptional experience and craft skills in all areas of game development, and we are really excited to work together to bring the LoL IP to new game experiences.”

The first Riot Forge published game will be announced next Thursday during The Game Awards, as confirmed by Geoff Keighley last night. Riot also has its own new games in the works, with several new projects being announced during the League of Legends 10th Anniversary celebration in October.

KitGuru Says: League of Legends is still one of the biggest games in the world, so it will be interesting to see how successful the IP ends up being while branching out into single-player, story-driven content. What do you all think of this latest move by Riot?

In the last nine months, there has been plenty of discussion surrounding Riot Games and its internal practices. Recently, there have been lawsuits alleging discrimination and sexism, which Riot has moved to block due to a waiver found in most employee contracts. This led to a walkout protest, which didn’t do much at the time, but it did lead to an investigation from California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing. Now, Riot is looking to settle the lawsuits for good, promising to pay out $10 million.

This whole situation became public back in October 2018, shortly after discrimination complaints first began popping up online. Now, as reported by The Los Angeles Times, Riot is settling the legal complaints with a $10 million fund that will be split amongst around 1,000 women employed at the studio between November 2014 and the date the settlement is finalised.

Individual payouts will differ depending on the length of employment and contractor/full-time status. As you would expect, Riot is also continuing to make promises of improving its internal culture and will review its internal practises and employee pay scale once again.

A judge still needs to finalise the settlement agreement, so we should hear more on this soon.

KitGuru Says: If this settlement agreement is accepted by the judge, then this class-action lawsuit business should be put to bed, although Riot will need to demonstrate some change internally to remain out of trouble.

The second match of the League of Legends Worlds 2019 semifinals was so impressive that it broke two records: the most-viewed match and the most hours watched across an esports event. The number of unique viewers was close to 4M and the number of hours watched was over 125M. These values exclude viewers from China and TV viewers.

The League of Legends world tournament is underway and the finals are not far off, coming on the 10th of November. In the knockout phase leading to the finals, in the second match of the semifinals, the European esports powerhouse G2 Esports faced and defeated the SKT T1 Telecom. Both teams were tipped to win this year's Worlds championship, and possibly because of that, two records were broken.

The match between G2 and SKT T1 was the most viewed in the history of esports, with a peak figure 3,985,787 unique viewers. This beats the second-most viewed match, the Fortnite World 2019 Finals, by around 1.6M viewers. As if the 4M viewers weren't enough, the value doesn't account for the total viewership since it only counts with viewers from platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, Naver, AfreecaTV, GarenaLive, Facebook and Naver. No TV viewers or viewers watching in Chinese platforms were accounted for.

The other record that was broken is the “most hours watched” in an esports event. For LoL Worlds 2019, up until now, there have been 125,348,972 hours watched and there's still the finals to be played.

The number of unique viewers was for a semifinal match, leading many to believe that on the finals, in the upcoming weekend, this record will be shattered. For the “most hours watched” record, that number will undoubtedly increase. We will see by how much on November 10th, when the finals will be played.
