While this year's BlizzCon has showcased Overwatch's new hero and map alongside the announcement that Starcraft II will be free-to-play, the most exciting news surrounds World of Warcraft's history. Blizzard has officially announced World of Warcraft Classic, it's very own, official legacy server.

“Before I get to the big news today, I want to talk about ice cream,” Executive Producer of WoW J. Allen Brack told the Blizzcon crowd. “I understand that for some of you, your favorite flavor is vanilla.”

This alone would be enough to get any old-school World of Warcraft fan excited, with “vanilla” being a reference to the servers as they were before expansion packs changed the meta of the game.

This experience has been repeatedly created by fans, with the 2015 Nostalrius server garnering over 800,000 accounts during its lifetime. The server lasted approximately a year before Blizzard Entertainment sent a Cease and Desist letter, effectively causing Nostalrius to shut down. The server eventually came back online due to fan and media outcry, however the owners of the server became worried that their efforts and subsequent legacy servers were affecting the chances of an official vanilla server down the line, causing it to be retired indefinitely.

“Fans of World of Warcraft around the world, we hear you,” Brack told the audience. “I am pleased and also a little bit nervous to announce the development of a classic server option for World of Warcraft. This is a larger endeavor than you might imagine, but we are committed to making an authentic, Blizzard-quality classic experience.”

Currently there is no word as to when World of Warcraft Classic is set to release, and Blizzard has yet to share any details beyond the short cinematic trailer, but this does mean that players won't have to put up with the drama that comes with unofficial servers.

For those uninterested in the classic experience, Blizzard has also announced World of Warcraft's seventh expansion pack, Battle For Azeroth. This will introduce two new continents, a new level cap and plenty more features that will be available for beta testing in the near future.

KitGuru Says: Considering Blizzard has had the demand there for quite a while, it's about time that it explored a legacy server of its own. Unfortunately, progress is not likely to transfer over from unofficial servers over to the official ones. With that said, do you plan to hop into World of Warcraft Classic?

World of Warcraft legacy servers are popular, offering the vanilla experience of the game before its universe was expanded via expansion packs. Usually these projects are shut down due to Blizzard’s intervention, but this time the Elysium server suffered at the hands of the developers themselves after an embezzlement scandal.

The Elysium Project was founded to revive old builds of World of Warcraft that were buried under the many adjustments Blizzard has made over the years. Elysium ultimately helped one of the most popular legacy servers to date, Nostalrius, find its feet after Blizzard sent its most prominent cease and desist letter in years before eclipsing it entirely, resulting in Nostalrius developers closing up shop to avoid becoming a piracy server.

Since then, Elysium has been the go-to for vanilla enthusiasts. That is, at least, until two of the developers had been caught red handed embezzling donations meant to keep the server alive, using the money for “personal financial reasons.”

“The Elysium Project as it exists today is no longer a viable project due to the systemic problem of lack of oversight on those with the most access to the servers,” reads a statement posted by former Elysium members. “Due to failures to uphold the projects ideals and integrity, the Elysium Project is being dissolved and relaunched out of the control of those who have abused the trust of the staff, community, and legacy movement as a whole.”

The remainder of the statement describes how one former team member, Shenna, took approximately €2,000 of the donations for personal use, whereas another member, Crogge, started a gold-selling business tied to the project.

In individual joint statements, both Shenna and Crogge confirmed that the allegations were true, attempting to place reasoning, or rather excuses, behind the actions.

“Yes, due to mine and my family’s personal problems, I did receive some money for a personal use, but at the end of the day it helped to spend more time here maintaining the servers,” wrote Sheena. “We didn’t want to resort to [gold] sales, but donations were extremely limited, and it was either we do limited sales or we shut down Elysium,” Sheena continued in a separate joint statement.

“That is not an excuse, just the reality of the situation,” said Sheena and Crogge. “This was not known (neither was the financial struggles we were having) by most of the Elysium team. We do not mean to defend this position, only be more upfront about it.”

This has resulted in Elysium dissolving, with former members taking the server data to found Light’s Hope, dedicated to continuing the old legacy server.

“The core team that are stepping down from the Elysium Project are coalescing around the foundational ideals this project is supposed to represent and are relaunching/rebranding as Lights Hope. The servers will be relaunched with the backups created prior to the posting of this announcement, though there may be some data not saved that encompasses an hour or two prior.”

Sheena and Crogge have since said that they feel betrayed by the former members abandoning the project and taking the data, while they both plan to continue to work on getting Elysium working again despite the smaller team.

KitGuru Says: It’s a sad turn of events for the fans who have poured their love, support and finances into helping a fan-made server being the best it can be. Unfortunately, that is the nature of supporting unofficial or yet-to-be-realised products, so please proceed with caution when investing your money. Will you be avoiding Elysium and the perpetrators from now on?

Earlier this month, Blizzard sent a cease and desist letter to the operators of Nostalrius, a private vanilla World of Warcraft sever played on by hundreds of thousands of players. This also sparked a petition to get Blizzard to stop ignoring fans calling for legacy servers. It took a couple of weeks, but Blizzard has now commented on the matter, explaining its side of the story.

Writing on the WoW community forums, community manager ‘Nethaera' explained that Blizzard couldn't just let Nostalrius continue the way it was as once you own a trademark or Intellectual Property, failure to protect it can eventually lead to it being revoked. However, Blizzard is apparently in talks with the people who ran Nostalrius right now and is exploring some options for legacy servers, though it wouldn't be an easy task.

“We have been discussing classic servers for years – it’s a topic every BlizzCon – and especially over the past few weeks. From active internal team discussions to after-hours meetings with leadership, this subject has been highly debated. Why not just let Nostalrius continue the way it was? The honest answer is, failure to protect against intellectual property infringement would damage Blizzard’s rights. This applies to anything that uses WoW’s IP, including unofficial servers. And while we’ve looked into the possibility – there is not a clear legal path to protect Blizzard’s IP and grant an operating license to a pirate server.”

“We explored options for developing classic servers and none could be executed without great difficulty. If we could push a button and all of this would be created, we would. However, there are tremendous operational challenges to integrating classic servers, not to mention the ongoing support of multiple live versions for every aspect of WoW.”

So right now, the idea floating around Blizzard is to implement ‘Pristine Realms', which would strip WoW of all of its levelling acceleration features, heirloom gear, XP boosts, friend recruitment bonuses, tokens and the group finder. This would essentially be a ‘clean slate' edition of WoW that would aim to re-capture the nostalgia of Vanilla WoW. However, at the moment Blizzard isn't sure if that would be the best solution.

Aside from that, the World of Warcraft team is in ongoing talks with the people who ran Nostalrius but nothing more was elaborated on.

KitGuru Says: It is great to see Blizzard actually explaining its side to this and communicating with World of Warcraft players. What do you guys think of Blizzard's response to all of this?
