Mining software developers have been trying to unlock the LHR GPUs since launch. Up to now, nobody had been able to fully unlock the LHR protections in place, but that has now changed with NiceHash.

The NiceHash developers have been continuously trying to unlock the LHR cards. Nine months ago, they were amongst the first to unlock 70% of the mining performance on LHR GPUs, but now, they have pushed that to 100%, making them the first to hit the milestone. Unfortunately, the team behind the mining software didn't explain how they achieved such advancement, likely to prevent others from stealing the method and implementing it into their miners.

The unlock is only available in QuickMiner v0.5.4.0 RC (release candidate). Most Nvidia RTX 30 series LHR models can run this miner, except for the RTX 3050 and the RTX 3080 12GB (LHRv3). Expected performance using the mining software with the 100% LHR unlock can be found below:

Model Expected performance
RTX 3060 LHR ~ 50 MH/s
RTX 3060 Ti LHR ~ 60 MH/s
RTX 3070 LHR ~ 60 MH/s
RTX 3070 Ti LHR ~ 81 MH/s
RTX 3080 10GB LHR ~ 98 MH/s
RTX 3080 Ti LHR ~ 120 MH/s

This tool only unlocks the Ethash algorithm. Other algorithm blocks are still enabled even when using the QuickMiner v0.5.4.0 RC. For now, the miner only works on Windows.

KitGuru says: With Ethereum likely moving away from GPU-based mining this year, this unlock may have arrived a little too late. With that in mind, GPU prices should continue to trend down, just as they have been for the last several months.

Just a few days ago, we learned about an upcoming piece of software claiming to be capable of completely unlocking the hash rate on Nvidia RTX 30 series graphics cards. As it turns out, the tool was nothing more than malware in disguise.

The LHRUnlocker tool was made available through GitHub, promising to be a BIOS modification to bypass Nvidia's hash rate limiting tech and unlock full performance for cryptomining. However, upon installing, the software did little more than inject malware into the powershell.exe Windows service.

The developer, who went by ‘Sergey' online, was questioned about this on GitHub, but unfortunately, no explanation was provided. The GitHub page has since been taken down completely. Another unfortunate thing right now is that we do not know how many people installed the malware, nor do we fully know what it does, but we can expect security professionals and enthusiasts to figure that out soon enough.

If you did download the tool following public reports about it, including one of our own, then be sure to scrub it from your PC and run a virus scan.

KitGuru Says: Fortunately the malware was discovered swiftly after the download was made available and then promptly taken down, so it shouldn't have spread too far.

With graphics cards pricing coming down and the end of Ethereum mining on the horizon, many are expecting graphics cards to become affordable once again. Unfortunately, there may be a set back, as a new software can reportedly completely remove the mining hash rate limiter on Nvidia RTX LHR GPUs.

The new software developed by Sergey (via VideoCardz) consists of a tool that replaces the graphics card's BIOS with a new one on RTX 30 and workstation RTX models with LHR. Although the software hasn't been tested yet, Sergey claims the LHR v2 Unlocker can unlock the full mining performance of any LHR card.

LHR v2 Unlocker introduces modifications extracted from BIOSes used by mining OSes on the desired graphics card and a graphics driver modified by the developer. Then, the software flashes and does a backup of the BIOS so you can reverse it at a later date if you need it. The supported RTX models and unlocked performance targets are as follows:

  • RTX 3060 LHR V2 – up to 49 MH/s
  • RTX 3060 Ti LHR – up to 61 MH/s
  • RTX 3070 LHR – up to 57 MH/s
  • RTX 3070 Ti – up to 69 MH/s
  • RTX 3080 LHR – up to 100 MH/s
  • RTX 3080 Ti – up to 115 MH/s
  • RTX A2000 – up to 46 MH/s
  • RTX A4000 – up to 67 MH/s
  • RTX A4500 – not measured
  • RTX A5000 – up to 110 MH/s

The Nvidia LHR v2 Unlocker will be available publicly in beta form later this week. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

When Nvidia launched the RTX 30 LHR series cards, its objective was to keep miners away from them, with gamers being the target audience for these cards. However, the developers behind NBMiner have managed to partially unlock the mining performance for these GPUs, offering up to 70% of the maximum hash rate.

NBMiner, a mining software used to mine multiple cryptocurrencies, has received a new update that allows Nvidia RTX 30 LHR cards owners to use up to 70% of their unlocked mining performance. The changelog explains that this only works for the Ethereum mining algorithm at the moment. However, future versions of the mining software might increase mining performance on LHR cards when using other algorithms.

In NBMiner's 39.0's changelog, the developer explains how to configure the mining software to unlock extra mining performance on LHR cards. Instead of just turning the limiter off, users will have to state how much of the hash rate they want to use. The developer recommends users set it at 68%, so the card uses 68% of the maximum unlocked hash rate of a card.

The LHR series should feature a new mining performance limiter different from the one employed in the RTX 3060. This card was released in February, but soon after that, its mining performance was unlocked by Nvidia itself when it launched a beta driver without the limiter. After that, Nvidia employed new anti-mining tech on all cards, resulting in new LHR GPUs.

KitGuru says: NBMiner may have found a way to unlock a good part of the locked hash rate for Ethereum, but it's still more profitable to mine other cryptocurrencies if you have an Nvidia LHR card, for now at least.

MSI's Hydrogen series might be coming back, as seen on an EEC listing filed by the company. According to the listing, the new Hydrogen series will only feature one SKU, an RTX 3090 card, but MSI may launch more cards further down the line. Moreover, the listing also includes MSI's lineup of LHR GPUs, featuring multiple RTX 3080, 3070, 3060 Ti, and 3060 models.

The last Hydrogen series card MSI launched was the GTX 580 Hydrogen, which featured a pre-installed water block. From the GTX 600 and onwards, MSI hasn't launched more Hydrogen cards but instead started launching the Sea Hawk EK X cards, which are still coming out today.

MSI hasn't yet launched an RTX 30 series card with a pre-installed water block. It hasn't been confirmed yet, but it seems that MSI has ended its partnership with EK, leading the company to revive the Hydrogen series.

The listing also included MSI's lineup of LHR GPUs, which includes multiple RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 cards. As per the listing, MSI will be adding the ‘LHR’ naming to the cards, which should help customers be aware of what they are buying. The listing also included multiple GT 710, GT 730, and GTX 1650 SKUs

KitGuru says: It looks like MSI will be reviving its Hydrogen line of water-cooled graphics cards. Do many of you prefer buying a GPU with a pre-installed AIO cooler?

Earlier this month, Nvidia confirmed plans to re-introduce the RTX 3060, RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 with ‘Lite Hash Rate' GPU revisions to reduce crypto-mining performance and get more graphics cards into the hands of PC gamers. Now, these LHR graphics cards are starting to land in the hands of users and Ethereum mining performance has been tested.

Chinese hardware site, Expreview, got their hands on an LHR version of the RTX 3060. This was originally the first graphics card to utilise Nvidia's anti-mining tech, but a beta driver unlocked full Ethereum mining performance shortly after launch. This new revision solves that issue with additional measures in place.

Through testing, it was determined that the new LHR version of the RTX 3060 does have its Ethereum mining performance capped to around 20 to 22 MH/s. It was also confirmed that switching to LHR chips has brought no negative performance impact to gaming.

Nvidia has begun separating mining card sales from GeForce by introducing these anti-mining measures on gaming GPUs and releasing new ‘CMP' graphics cards specifically for crypto mining.

Yesterday, Nvidia confirmed that it is releasing ‘Lite Hash Rate' versions of the RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti with anti-mining measures in place. Some more information has since come to light – LHR versions of these GPUs will be shipping to third-party board partners only, meaning we won't be getting LHR ‘Founders Edition' cards.

In a statement sent over to PCGamer, Nvidia confirmed that it has no plans to make Founders Edition versions of the RTX 3080, RTX 3070 or RTX 3060 Ti using LHR chips, which are revised GPUs with additional anti-mining measures in place. All of these revised GPUs will instead go straight to board partners making their own custom-cooled RTX graphics cards.

It is speculated that this decision means that the Founders Edition RTX 30 series graphics cards are nearing or have reached end of life, at which point production would cease, making these FE cards even rarer.

Nvidia hopes that by releasing GeForce GPUs with mining performance halved, more of these cards will end up going towards the PC gaming market. To appease crypto miners, CMP series graphics cards are releasing instead.

KitGuru Says: I've been a big fan of the Founders Edition design, so its a shame to see there are no plans for a revival with LHR GPUs in place. Still, this will be good for board partners, who have struggled just as much to keep up with demand.

Back in February ahead of the launch of the RTX 3060, Nvidia announced its new anti-mining measures to make GeForce graphics cards less desirable to crypto mining farms. We've heard through leaks and rumours that this tech would eventually transition over to the rest of the RTX 30 series line-up and today, Nvidia is making that official.

In an effort to get more GeForce graphics cards into the hands of gamers, Nvidia and its partners are updating the RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti graphics cards with additional measures to halve the Ethereum mining hash rate. These new GPUs will be known as “Lite Hash Rate” versions and will be differentiated from the original batches of RTX 30 series GPUs that have already gone to the retail channel to ensure all customers know what they are buying.

“Because these GPUs originally launched with a full hash rate, we want to ensure that customers know exactly what they’re getting when they buy GeForce products”, Nvidia says in a blog post. “To help with this, our GeForce partners are labelling the GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti cards with a “Lite Hash Rate,” or “LHR,” identifier. The identifier will be in retail product listings and on the box.”

We've been hearing about LHR versions of the RTX 30 series for weeks now, but Nvidia's official announcement today should signal ‘availability', a word that doesn't mean much in the current landscape of the GPU market.

KitGuru Says: We'll have to wait and see how well these new measures hold up, as it didn't take long for mistakes to be made with the RTX 3060. Hopefully over the next six months this will show a noticeable difference in gaming graphics card availability.

Following Galax's announcement, Gigabyte is now the second AiB partner introducing its new RTX 30 series cards with LHR chips. Expect more manufacturers to join Gigabyte and Galax in the coming days and weeks.

The new cards were initially spotted by @momomo_us, who also shared links of the rev 2.0 of the Aorus RTX 3060 Elite, the RTX 3060 Gaming OC, the RTX 3060 Vision OC, the RTX 3060 Eagle, and the RTX 3060 Eagle OC.

If you look at the listed features in any of the product pages of the aforementioned cards, you'll notice that they are listed as “LHR (Lite Hash Rate) version.” Although it's not specified, the LHR versions are the new RTX 30 series cards featuring Nvidia's latest anti-mining technology.

The specifications of the LHR and non-LHR seem to be the same, except for the GPU. Instead of featuring the GA106-300 GPU used in the non-LHR graphics, the rev 2.0 cards should feature the GA106-302 GPU.

Although there are already AiB partners introducing LHR cards, Nvidia hasn't officially announced them yet.

Galax confirms Nvidia is preparing the launch of RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 graphics cards with LHR chips. For now, these chips are only featured in Galax's Black General FG and Metal Master FG graphics cards, but other cards equipped with these chips are expected to release soon.

As seen on the product description of the RTX 3070 Black General FG, the RTX 3080 Metal Master FG, RTX 3080 Metal Master OC FG, and the RTX 3080 Black General OC FG, these cards will feature the new Nvidia LHR GPUs, which mean they have a crypto mining limiter.

According to Galax, these cards' mining performance is cut by half, with the RTX 3070 card mining Ethereum just at 25MH/s, while the RTX 3080 models at 43MH/s. It might be possible to improve mining performance slightly, but these GPUs will likely still be inferior compared to Nvidia's new CMP HX cards.

As for the remaining specifications of these cards, everything is as expected. The RTX 3070 Black General FG is clocked at 1725MHz and comes with 8GB of GDDR6 memory clocked at 14Gbps. The RTX 3080 Metal Master FG features a boost clock of 1710MHz, while the RTX 3080 Black General OC FG and RTX 3080 Metal Master OC FG are clocked at 1740MHz. The three RTX 3080 cards have 8GB of GDDR6 memory at 19Gbps.

Nvidia AIB partners have reportedly been informed about the GAxx2 GPUs with new anti-mining capabilities and Resizable BAR support enabled by default. Named LHR (Lite Hash Rate), the revised RTX 30 GPUs should start shipping in the middle of May.

We've already shared that Nvidia was planning to introduce crypto mining limiters to the RTX 3060 and the rest of the RTX 30 line-up, but now we have a shipping date window for the revised GPUs. The news comes from VideoCardz, which also stated that the first customers will receive the updated RTX 30 series cards by June. The revised GPUs are referred to as LHR chips. Non-LHR and LHR chips will have a different codename and PCI Device ID.

While we are likely to see the cryptomining limiter in revised RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 GPUs, Nvidia may avoid adding the limiter to the RTX 3090. Apparently, the reason behind this decision is due to the price of the card, and therefore lower profitability. Nonetheless, an updated RTX 3090 may feature a GAxx2 GPU to enable Resizable BAR support by default without the need for customers to change the vBIOS.

Nvidia has not announced anything officially yet. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru says: If Nvidia does indeed refresh the RTX 30 line-up with mining limitations in place, we may see more stock going towards the gaming market at last.
