The League of Legends's player run Tribunal system was an ambitious attempt to curb negative attitudes and comments from players of the highly competitive, and often toxic game. However about a year ago it was pulled, with Riot stating that it wanted to revamp the feature and improve it in a number of ways. Players today are missing its absence, even if Riot has implemented many other changes since to continue improving the game play experience, but they may not need to for much longer, as it looks like the Tribunal is coming back very soon.

Announced on Reddit by Riot's social systems designer, Jeffrey “Lyte” Lin, the new Tribunal is said to include some of the various improvements that Riot has brought to bear over the last 12 months, including positive incentives for players to be nice to one another. Of course there will be all the usual punishments in place for those that break the rules, like temporary bans, low-queue priority and chat blocks, but Riot and Lin want to see more players rewarded for doing the right thing too.

tribunal

“There will be little things here and there we’ll do for you guys,” Lin said (via Kotaku). “Specific rewards I can’t talk about a lot yet, but I do know they can be tricky; no one reward will actually feel like a reward to every player (not everyone cares about IP boosts or mystery skins, for example). We’ll talk more about it when we’re ready.”

This is part of the big trend that's changing with the new Tribunal when it makes its staggered-sounding return. By changing the attitude of the tribunal to one that deals out both boons and punishments, it's hoped that players acting as judges won't be so keen to dole our heavy discipline.

The other big change Lin talked about was the immediacy of feedback. Instead of it taking days or weeks for a player's case to be put through the mill, Riot wants to get that down to an hour. That way, Lin says, if players are toxic, they'll be held accountable within a time period that matters, not much later when they've forgotten what it is they did. That should also benefit judges he said, since they will be able to see their actions taking affect.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see whether Riot can come up with a system that is able to react as quickly as it wants, but the Tribunal would be certainly more effective if it can.

There's a school of thought in design that says ‘In order to go forward, you must first look back'. Probably one of the more famous examples in recent times was the re-emergence of the roadster sports car. Some of the ideas in the BMW Z4 go back half a century, but the result is pleasing to the eye. Thermaltake is today revisiting one of its most popular chassis of the past. KitGuru wonders if it is a reincarnation of a past master or wine made from grapes that have hung too long on the vine.

It's hard to see ‘Soprano'and not think back to Satriale's Pork Store and the Bada Bing. The original Soprano chassis launched in the middle of the last decade and KitGuru maestro Zardon spent many hours analysing products like the Soprano VB1000 SWS.

The New Soprano has the wonderfully complex code name VO900M1N2N, which is a pity because the chassis itself is far smoother.

It's 100% black, inside and out, with capacity for multiple full-length graphic cards.

According to CEO Kenny Lin, “We have included an invisible top-mounted HDD docking station and internal USB 3.0 ports for a refined data management along with plenty of space for up to four optic drive devices, a multi card reader, five additional drives and lots of space for an enthusiast's cooling options”.

“Our spacious ATX design can house multiple graphic cards up to 315mm long and we have also included 4 rubber grommeted cable management holes and sound-dampening foam with the side panels”, he explained.

Price and availability will determine whether or not this case is a success - on paper the spec looks good.

.

KitGuru says: We can't help but wonder why Thermaltake does not carry on with designs like the original Level 10. This new Soprano chassis looks capable, but (on looks alone) it won't be enough to stand out on a shop shelf with 30 other black chassis. We would seriously encourage Thermaltake to follow Tt eSports and come up with designs that shock and amaze, because even if they don't sell huge amounts – they will stand out in the consumer's mind – and that's important.

Back in June, we presented some of the world's first shots of the upcoming Thermaltake Jing cooler. Now, three months later, the product is about to ship in volume and we've got it in our lab early. Before we begin the torture testing, here's a quick look see.

After the Big Typhoon VX, Thermaltake hit a lull. For ages, the coolers being produced looked great, but just could not compete with the latest and greatest designs from other vendors.

On the air side, Thermalright stood strong with its Ultra 120, Coolermaster produced the Z600 and V8 while every guru's favourite Austrian sandwich went from strength to strength.

At the same time, a small armada of easy to use water cooling solutions splashed into the market. CoolIT led the way with the Domino and was quickly followed by the Corsair H50.

Against that background, it seems that Thermaltake's engineers were being driven to try harder and harder.

The last of the ‘look great, but don't deliver on the cooling' products were the V1 and the SpinQ – both of which look like mini works of art.

Then Thermaltake launched the Contac29. Simple, cheap and easy to use – it became an overnight favourite with AMD and Intel enthusiasts on a budget. It pushed straight into the Arctic Cooling Freezer space and has stayed there ever since.

But it still wasn't a world beater. Then came the Thermaltake Frio. For the first time ever, Thermaltake had a cooler that could compete with the best. It won almost universal approval among the press and overclocking community. Most people we spoke to were genuinely shocked that Thermaltake could make a cooler that good. It was, for the Thermaltake cooling team, a ‘Level 10 moment'. One where they shocked the market by producing something really desirable.

But even the Frio has its draw backs. That extreme level of air cooling needs, well, an extreme amount of air. Running passive, single fan or dual fan on slow – the product is unobtrusive. However, when you set the fans to high, you definitely know that the product is ‘on'.

Listening closely to the market, Thermaltake's CEO Kenny Lin, went back to the engineering team and told them that he could live with a slightly lower cooling ability, if only they could make a cooler that was truly harmonic. Something that balanced perfomance with striking looks and whisper-quiet performance.

Enter the Jing, Chinese for silence, and an ambitious attempt to marry extreme cooling performance with complete peace at a sensible price.

Does it work?  Zardon will fire up his mighty test rig and deliver a result shortly. For now, here are some pics to get your juices flowing.

Striking colours certainly seem to indicate cool, harmonious performance
Thermaltake Jing pushed hard on its green credentials
The fans claim they can go as low as 16dBA - but we'll be the judge of that. Note the WCG branding as well.
When you open the box, the Jing peaks out from its snow-like covering

KitGuru says: Making the perfect cooler is a thankless task. Get the cooling right and it's noisy. Make it quiet and it can't keep your CPU cool. Getting the right balance is tough. Will Jing manage? Come on Zardon – render a verdict!

The biggest gaming competition on the planet is the World Cyber Games. Brainchild of the absolutely-gaming-bonkers South Koreans, WCG's headquarters in downtown Seoul has seen massive growth in the sport over the past 10 years. One of the areas of biggest improvement is in the human-machine interface and the gaming peripherals that allow each generation of enthusiast to push things just that little bit further.

For the 2010 finals, Thermaltake's new Tt eSports division will be providing the kit. Overall, Thermaltake has been working with WCG for 5 years, but this is the first time that the new keyboard and mouse designs will come under such intense pressure.

Thermaltake's Tt eSports products not only aim to provide pro-gamers with the best experience possible, they also match KitGuru's favourite plastic evening wear. Which was nice.

Here's a question. We've all heard of the WCG and Samsung has spent a small fortune supporting it, but how big is it ?

Over 1.6 million gamers from more than 65 countries will fight, battle, club and blast each other to get to the Grand Final. That Grand Final will see the WCG take over the LA Convention Centre from 30th September to the 3rd October. These pics show what the Convention Centre looks like when it hasn't been stormed by thousands and thousands of gamers.

LA is just going to be completely and utterly invaded at the end of September.

Each country has it's own finals and the UK‘s will be held at Multiplay's Insomnia i40 event over the August Bank Holiday. Looking at KitGuru's most recent poll, many of you will be making the annual summer pilgrimage to this event. If you do, then you'll not only get a chance to get hands on with the new Tt eSports keyboard and mouse, you will also have a chance to play with new headsets and chassis.

Craig Fletcher is one of the Multiplay directors entrusted with delivering the UK finals of the WCG tournament at i40 in Newbury this August

Mr Kim, the happy chappy that runs the WCG said, “Thermaltake and WCG have shown strong partnership through the last 4 years. I am especially happy this year, since Thermaltake launched Tt eSPORTS. Thermaltake’s product line extension will be welcomed by all players.  Players this year in the WCG 2010 Grand Final will be taken to an all new level of gaming with the help from Tt eSPORTS by Thermaltake’s products”.

The top brass at Thermaltake seemed equally pleased with themselves. Kenny Lin, Thermaltake’s CEO, said “Our Tt eSports products are ready to be used by the world’s best gamers in the finals of the world’s premier eSports event. We’re proud that the World Cyber Games has chosen to promote our products alongside its tournament. The strategy and objectives of Tt eSPORTS are in perfect unity with the World Cyber Games. A focus on success, while at the same time respecting the spirit of the competition”. Well, what would you expect him to say.

Kenny Lin and part of the Tt eSports demonstration team at Computex this year

In truth, this is a tough test. Alongside the serious players like Razer, Roccat and SteelSeries, this market is also saturated with top quality products from Microsoft, Logitech and other global brands. It will be interesting to see if Tt eSports can establish itself as the product of choice.

KitGuru says: Getting chosen gives Thermaltake a good foot in the door. However, gamers are a fickle bunch and it will be interesting to see how many of the finalists actually pick up massive cheques while using the Challenger keyboard or Black mouse.

You know the drill. Quick thoughts below and in-depth discussion over here in the KitGuru forum.

Computex has become THE event for the launch of new products. Ancient KitGurus remember the days when companies would hold onto new products and wait for the old Comdex show in Las Vegas in November. Comdex has died and CeBIT is dying – but Computex is still going strong. Thermaltake's substantial stand in the Nangang event centre had a load of new products, one of which put a smile on KitGuru's face – a brand new, top of the range PSU.

When KitGuru put the Thermaltake Toughpower 775w PSU to the test, it sailed way past the 80Plus Bronze rating and clear into Silver efficiency territory for a number of our tests. Now its engineers have turned their attention to producing a high-end PSU, capable of delivering way over 1,000 watts – complete with an 80Plus GOLD certification.

CEO and Founder, Kenny Lin, was on hand to show the new PSU off.

Absolutely stunning... and the PSU is nice too!

Apart from the raw facts and figures that come with an 80Plus certificate, KitGuru readers will like the simple styling and matt black finish.

80Plus means that a PSU will deliver more than 80% efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of the rated load. Gold rated supplies like this Thermaltake unit will be no less than 88% efficient.

KitGuru says: With modern graphics cards/CPUs, KitGurus need more and more power. As you increase wattage, a small percentage loss quickly turns into a lot of wasted energy. If you're thinking about buying a high end PSU, you need to look at the 80Plus rating. Cheap supplies could lose 25-40% of the power you put in. Losing up to 400w?  That's like going out and leaving eight 50w bulbs going at home. It's crazy. Do like Kenny and choose a golden wonder.
