With the demand for faster and higher capacity memory in mobile devices such as smartphones increasing, manufacturers are racing to bring innovative new products to market which fulfil these needs.

At the company’s annual Tech Day at its Device Solutions America headquarters in San Jose, California, Samsung announced it has developed the worlds first 12 GB low-power double data rate 4X (LPDDR4X) UFS-based multichip package (uMCP) and has started mass production, ready for launch.

Samsung’s 12 GB uMCP solution is set to launch just seven months after the company unveiled its 12 GB LPDDRX package, which was based on 16 Gb DRAM. The new 12 GB uMCP LPDDR4X chips will be manufactured using the company’s 1y-nanometer process, by combining four 24 Gb LPDDR4X chips and ultra-fast eUFS 3.0 NAND storage, into a single package.

“Leveraging our leading-edge 24-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4X chips, we can offer the highest mobile DRAM capacity of 12GB not only for high-end smartphones but also for mid-range devices,” said Sewon Chun, executive vice president of Memory Marketing at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to support our smartphone-manufacturing customers with on-time development of next-generation mobile memory solutions, bringing enhanced smartphone experiences to many more users around the globe.

Since smartphone manufacturers are implementing larger and higher resolution displays into many of their products, Samsung claims users will benefit from the company’s new uMCP solution during data-intensive tasks and while multitasking.

The new technology offers 1.5X more capacity over the previous generation 8 GB package while providing a data transfer rate of 4,266 Mbps, which will support smooth 4k video encoding and AI machine learning for mid-range smartphones. Samsung plans to make the new LPDDR4X chips available quickly, to suit the rise in demand from smartphone manufacturers.

KitGuru says: Samsung's new LPDDR4X chips look set to offer an increase in performance in mid-range smartphones, which should make the experience of using them for multitasking feel closer to high-end products.
