One of the key selling points of Apple’s next-generation MacBook Air laptop is expected to be very slim form-factor, fanless cooling and long battery life. However, it turns out that the new system from Apple will also sport a number of technological breakthroughs that will hit the market for the first time.

Apple’s forthcoming 12” MacBook Air (MBA) are projected to be based on Intel Corp.’s code-named “Broadwell” processor made using 14nm fabrication process. Thanks to low power consumption of such chips, the new MacBook Air is expected to feature a new clamshell structure, which is projected to make the new MBA even thinner and lighter than the current-generation models. Ultra-thin design is going to be accompanied by fanless cooling, which will make the new PCs utterly quiet.

Expreview reports that in addition to the new form-factor and the all-new microprocessors inside, the upcoming MBA laptops will feature 12” retina-class display with very high resolution and pixel density. Ultra-thin laptops will receive retina-class display for the first time with the new MBA.

According to the web-site, in order to make the laptop thinner, Apple had to get rid of multiple ports and even 3.5” audio interface. As a result, the new MacBook Air will only feature one MagSafe magnetic charging port as well as USB 3.1 port with 5Gb/s or even 10Gb/s bandwidth as well as a new type-C connector with reversible plug orientation. The new MBA will be one of the first PCs to feature USB 3.1 type-C connector. It is also logical to expect the forthcoming MacBook Air to feature a Thunderbolt port.

What remains to be seen is how much will the new MacBook Air cost. Ultra-thin PCs are hard to assemble and contract manufacturers may increase their prices to Apple. Retina-class displays are also pretty expensive.

Apple MacBook Air 12” was originally expected to hit the market in Q2 2014 or Q3 2014, but was postponed because of Intel’s inability to starts shipments of its code-named “Broadwell” processors in 2014, according to media reports.

Apple did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: While ultra-thin notebooks are nice, the lack of proper amounts of connectors clearly lowers usability of such PCs. For example, if you plug in a mouse, you will not be able to use external hard drive or even a USB stick…

Quanta Computer, a contract maker of electronics that produces certain products for Apple, has reportedly started small-volume production of Apple’s next-gen MacBook Air laptop with 12” display. The new notebooks will unlikely hit the market until 2015, but Quanta needs to learn how to produce what could be the world’s thinnest mobile PC to date.

DigiTimes reports that small volume-production of 12” MacBook Air laptops started this month and the volumes will begin to grow gradually starting next month. The initial production of 12” MacBook Air has not yet reached a satisfactory yield rate, which means that manufacturing volumes will not be increased until that happens. As a result, it is highly likely that the new notebooks will only emerge on the market in 2015.

Apple MacBook Air 12” was initially expected to hit the market in Q2 2014 or Q3 2014, but was delayed reportedly because Intel’s inability to begin shipments of its code-named “Broadwell” processors in 2014. The mobile PC is expected to feature a new clamshell structure, which is projected to make the new MacBook Air (MBA) even thinner and lighter than the current-generation models. Moreover, since Intel’s mainstream “Broadwell” chips made using 14nm process technology consume up to 15W of energy, the new MBA will be fanless.

Since the new MacBook Air 12” uses significantly different components compared to existing models, it is reported that its suppliers face challenges fulfilling Apple's orders.

Apple and Quanta did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: Since Intel will only start revenue shipments of mainstream Core i-series “Broadwell” processors in late 2014 or even early 2015, it is highly likely that by the time Apple will be able to commercially release its new MBA 12” all the technological problems associated with production will be solved.

Being a very close partner of Intel Corp., Apple naturally depends on the chipmaker’s ability to supply new central processing units on time. Apparently, the delay of Intel’s next-generation code-named “Broadwell” processor caused Apple to reconsider its own plans and now the highly-anticipated MacBook Air 12” with retina-class display is expected to be launched only in 2015.

Apple MacBook Air 12” was originally expected to be released in Q2 2014 or Q3 2014, but it could be late and only emerge in 2015, reports 9to5Mac. The device is projected to feature a new clamshell structure, which is expected to make the new MacBook Air (MBA) even thinner and lighter than the current-generation models. Moreover, since Intel’s “Broadwell” microprocessors made using 14nm process technology are supposed to consume a very limited amount of power and emit a very limited amount of heat, the all-new MacBook Air 12” is expected to be fanless.

Since the MacBook Air 12” seems to be designed from the ground-up to be powered by Intel’s “Broadwell” microprocessor, the delay of the latter naturally delays the new MBA.

It is now expected that Apple will introduce its new MacBook Air 11″ and 13″ laptops with Intel Core i-series “Haswell Refresh” chips this year. The new notebooks will hardly be too different from existing models and therefore will not catalyse currentowners to upgrade.

Keeping in mind the fact that Intel reportedly intends to release its all-new next-generation code-named “Skylake” processors in the second quarter of next year, it is possible that Apple will skip the “Broadwell” and adopt its successor instead. Still, keeping in mind that Apple may get priority shipments from Intel, it may simply get the “Broadwell” well ahead of other PC makers and there will be no reason to wait for the “Skylake” chips.

Apple and Intel did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: It was a matter of time before the first reports about product launch delays because of Intel’s issues with “Broadwell” emerge. It is logical to expect other makers of PCs, which pinned hopes on Intel’s low-power “Broadwell” chips, to also delay their innovative products.
